One of the best things I've found in life, Alan Watts. He's like the teaching grandfather I've never had. Learnt so many things from him and other great people he knew and cited in his lectures, and for that I'm eternally grateful. My mind is pacified.

When Alan Watts was on it, he was absolutely on it! This excerpt is one such peak moment from the great teacher. Beware the person of one book, one outlook, one idea. Beware the halo polishers, virtue signallers & other manipulators of others. Let it be! Speaking words of wisdom, let it be! What is Zen is Zen, what is not Zen is also Zen. Doing non-doing, all is finished. The point is there is no point. Breathing is virtue. Seeing is virtue. Marvellous, succinct, seductively sanguine & simply sublime. Thank you Alan Watts, RIP. Namaste.

This lesson is fabulous! I can really relate to it. I meditate a lot. Sometimes people tell me that is a very egoistic thing to do because when I sit "for myself" I'm not doing anything "good" for anyone else. My answer is always: if everybody would make sure they were taking good care of themselves (and that is not more difficult than just meditating, just sitting, shikantaza, something everybody can do, even my cat does it all the time) the world would be a good place for everybody. It's not up to me to do "good" for others, because I don' t know what is good for other people and it's not up to me to decide what is good for other people. I'm trying to find out what is good for me. If that works I made the life of one person really better. That's an achievement! I'm not pretentious enough to think I can make someone else's life better. I don't want to be the monkey that kills the fish in order to save it from drowning (I love that analogy).

@@chaddybby1979 how you go about to achieve that for others is the question, everybody's situation is different, you can't force people to meditate or don't do drugs or alcohol, you can just tell them or convince them somehow, for that you have to know them better

I'm glad that I got over that falacy of doing things that are supposed to be "good" for you. Alan explained it very well and in some interview talking about it he cited C. G. Jung: "Life itself is a disease with a very bad prognostic. It lingers on for years and invariably ends with death". He was joking, but he said this because it's how most people see life. So they try constantly to get rid of this disease by doing things that are supposed to be good for the sickness, and they try to get better. Sort of like taking aspirins. The problem comes when you give aspirins to another person that does not need them and you end up causing the reverse effect.

This was such an eye-opening discussion on the complexities of 'doing good' and how it can unintentionally cause harm. I once worked with someone who was constantly trying to improve themselves but found that their well-meaning efforts were often met with frustration. Watching this video made them realize that sometimes, overthinking and forcing growth can backfire. It's a delicate balance between self-awareness and allowing things to unfold naturally. Thank you for presenting this in such a profound and engaging way!

if you know what is good for you you would already be improved is false because like a three we grow step by step every minute every day. If I want a fit body day by day I workout learn and accend. I have listen to Alan watts for a long time and now I start understand where he is wrong. because there is true wisdom in his speeches.
What is god is what to strive for because that is fun! he always talks about life being a play. So to do nothing in the way we give up is not fun because then we do nothing. what is fun however is to create a life that is filled with the type off things we like and to do that we will do what is called improve. But its not about getting the goodie like Alan says its about getting the Goodie and everything in between. Thinking about the goodie, seeing the goodie work and fight for the goodie until we have the goodie and then we can enjoy it.
So I love Alan watts because he challenge the mind to a new way of thinking but I don't agree because the fun off life is life to live and to grow in your own pace to the best you can be.

      @syedbasheeruddin6934 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

Was just passing by dear stranger ...❤🎉😊
Here are few Hadiths (Prophetic sayings) that resonate with Alan Watts' philosophical ideas:
      On the Nature of Reality
      1. "Do not be like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves." (Sahih Bukhari) - Watts often spoke about the importance of remembering one's true nature.
      2. "The world is a bridge, so cross it, but do not build your dwelling place upon it." (Sunan Ibn Majah) - Watts emphasized the impermanence of worldly things.
On the Illusion of the Ego
      1. "You are not the owner of your wealth, your family, or your life. You are only a trustee, and you will be questioned about your trust." (Sunan Abu Dawud) - Watts often spoke about the illusion of ownership and control.
      2. "The servant (of Allah) will not attain true freedom until he frees himself from his own desires." (Sunan Ibn Majah) - Watts emphasized the importance of transcending egoic desires.
      On Mindfulness and Presence
      1. "Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler." (Sahih Bukhari) - Watts often spoke about living in the present moment.
      2. "Do not grieve over what has passed, and do not be anxious about what has not yet come." (Sunan Ibn Majah) - Watts emphasized the importance of mindfulness and presence.
      On the Unity of Existence
      1. "Allah is the One Who is sufficient for all His creation, and He is the One Who is worthy of all praise." (Sahih Muslim) - Watts often spoke about the unity and interconnectedness of all existence.
      2. "The creation is like a single person, and Allah is the One Who takes care of all His creation." (Sunan Ibn Majah) - Watts emphasized the importance of recognizing the unity and oneness of all existence.
These Hadiths demonstrate the convergence of ideas between Islamic theology and Alan Watts' philosophical thoughts.
Would you like to explore more Hadiths or discuss the implications of these parallels?.....

There is some truth in this but I think it also lacks some things.
What does good mean in the context of this video? Good has not been defined so it may be heavily subjective.
You may not always know what is good for you, but if you're trying to find out and failing on your way, is it a bad thing having tried?
Is doing science and trying to find a way inherently a bad thing because you never can be sure the things you will provide good?
I can totally understand how forcing political views or democracy, or any societal virtues on other nations can do harm to those. I can also see how you can harm yourself if you think too fast and take the first solution that comes to mind without analyzing your problem.
Doing anything can cause bad, if you want it so. Every action you take, because you don't know about its consequences.
So what is the gist of this talk? Never taking any kind of action because you cannot know it does good? Or is it about (not) worrying about things you cannot control?

How can a group of people find what is good for them apart from repeatedly talk about what they think is good for them and how their current situation could be improved? Collectively looking for a solution that suits everyone while still maintaining space for every individual to find their own way.
Would total subordination to one of the group and not talking about individual needs be better?
And there is always the question left what is considered good in this context. The whole talk is about something that hasn't even been defined properly.

I think perhaps it might just not to be overly-identified with intention, even if good. But I could very well be wrong.

    • @l.h.503
      @l.h.503 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@josephpercy1558 Yeah maybe you're right, it's just about stating the fact, that good and doing good is often not easy to see and to act upon because there might either be a bigger picture or the goal even is mistakenly considered good.
I was looking for an answer on how to act good in this video, when it was only talking about the dangers of being mislead.
The thing is you end up not doing anything if you spent too much thinking about if something might be good or not. You have to deal with approximation and the nature of the world which is a complex system.

If the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, does that mean that the Stairway to Heaven is built upon by bad decisions?
Remember: Christ calls all sinners to repent, for it is not the healthy who need the physician.

Examine further the principle you propose. Heaven and Hell are concepts to grasp the polarization at their extremes. This experience is infinite, on all 3 Great Planes (physical, mental, & spiritual); inherently the principle of Correspondence. Reach further, it doesn’t stop at the rudimentary idea of orthodox Heaven and Hell.
