    The guitar is a Gibson 1960s tribute with an M&V Humbucker in the bridge and a stock Gibson p90 in neck.

    The amp is a Tyler Amps JT14, which sounds similar to a vintage Fender Princeton but with a little more low end and body!

    Another great video, Aaron! Might be because I've never been much of a Rat guy, but to my ears the Uzi is more musical.

      Appreciate that! The Uzi really delivers for the price. Although I must admit. This is my first official Proco Rat. And I was more impressed with it than I thought I’d be

    Two things that were a must in the late 70's, and every metal player I knew had these..
    A Pro Co RAT and DIMARZIO SUPER DISTORTION PICKUP.
    Never liked the Dimarzio but I still have four incarnations of Pro Co Rats including the first and second issue and a couple clones.

      Yep , I remember my super distortion pickup , it was very microphonic you could talk in to it and clearly hear your monster voice .

    Correct me if I am wrong but the Rat and it's classic "filter" was designed to be the topping on an already driven amp. Yes, you can use it as a Distortion/Drive/Fuzz on it's own, but as the "hot sauce on top of a JCM 800" is where it really shines.
    (ie...Kill Em All---Metallica)......This UZI looks interesting though.....LED lights? Now that is classy.

    Great review. Thanks for getting into it for us all. I have the ProCo Rat and a different Joyo Pedal. The Joyo Ultimate Drive. It's a fine pedal too. Amazing for the price. One thing I do want to point out is that you do get what you pay for. My band played a gig in Detroit on a very hot day. The band stand was an Aluminum stage. It had to be over 100 degree F on the stage. I had BOSS pedals and JOYO pedals that day. Due to the extreme heat the JOYO pedals did not work at all. Very disappointing. The BOSS products were flawless. There is a reason these companies price their products the way they do. Chances are you may never play a show in a really high temp environment. But if you do you'll want quality components in your pedals. JOYO might not be so reliable in extreme temperature conditions. Mine were not reliable. BOSS will work. Hey, I still use my JOYO pedals and they are great, but not in extreme heat. I never had to play them in extreme cold. So, rock on everyone. Don't be afraid to try JOYO. I love their stuff. But, beware of extreme temps regardless of the make of pedal.

      Thanks so much! Yes it’s true. The sounds you can get with budget gear is solid. But the build quality is always where they fall short. Corners are cut on enclosures.

      Guy your a complete Ding Dong and your reasoning is complete nonsensical rubbish. Played to hundreds,thousands,in all type stage conditions from pouring rain to massive heat. Joyo pedal works just fine very tweakable ultra gain and definition. Pedal shreds the shit atta many over priced boutique pedals. Your set up or stage crew most likely were the problem NOT the pedal.

      I have a joyo vintage overdrive that is nearly 10 years old. Been submerged under water for 24 hours, thrown off balconies and down stairs and left in scorching heat in the boot many times. Works every time exact same as first day I got it.

      Theres a whole world of places hotter than detroit where the joyo works just fine

    I think they’re both usable. I bought my first RAT in ‘83 and hated it but I believe that’s because I was running it into the front end of 70~71 Marshall Super Lead and running amp wide open. Just not too sure that the pedal complimented the amps natural distortion when the amp’s volume control(s) we’re setting to full tilt kill. However, I now have a ‘68 Plexi Superlead and use it with the RAT and it sounds great but I did change V1 and V2 to 12AU7’s to calm the beast (I also use the amp’s bottom inputs which drops the input signal by 6dB). The amp is basically now a vintage, clean amplifier as the 12AU7’s have perhaps 1/5th (or less) the gain of a 12AX7. Keep up the good work!

      @aaronjlivecchi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea perhaps it sounds cooler with a cleaner platform. Although I always thought people like the older Rats more. So that surprises me.
      Also thanks a bunch!

      Aaron J Livecchi Well, the older Rat does sound different than the newer models but is it better or worse? Most people know which one is which and their subjective bias tells them that the older is better because we believe in nostalgia but I’d like to see people do a blind review of the pedals based solely on the sound (So that we’re not inducing a subjective and nostalgic psychological bias) and read peoples opinions when they aren’t told and cannot see which peddle is vintage or new. Just an idea...

      If I ever get my hands on a vintage one. Maybe I will

      I got my ‘86 Ratt to run best on a ‘76 Peavy Classic tube combo running clean and not really to the point of distortion. I let the pedal push me to a high gain distortion that remained clear for the neoclassical stuff I was ripping off back then. :-)

    The uzi is more metal the rat however has a good crunch sound

  • @mattgilbert7347
    @mattgilbert7347 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Some common ground there for sure. The RAT can get into Fuzzstortion whereas the Uzi stays within the realm of Distortion per se. Uzi very tweakable, I liked it.
    Either work well in lower gain settings. For higher gain I'd take the RAT for that fuzziness I mentioned.
    Good pedals.

      Really, i agree...I didn’t think it sounded like a RAT, when I didn’t see the Filter control o knew it, that’s no longer a RAT,even if it shares some common circuitry..I don’t hear it,

    Both sounded thick and musical to my ears, slightly different. Would have been interesting to hear the Uzi mid-scooped (since it's supposedly a metal pedal), I think it has a lot of range due to the EQ. The Rat is just a thing all it's own, you either like it or you don't, personally it'll always have a place on my board.

    • @aaronjlivecchi
      @aaronjlivecchi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried to get them to sound as similar as possible. They both do their own vibe. Hopefully this could help someone see that and choose what they’re going for.

      A lot of metal isn’t scooped.

  • @familiarpurrson8744

    Part of me prefers the Uzi just because the Rat has that Fuzz quality to it, as you noted. I have a Muffuletta for that. On the other paw, the Rat does get down 'n dirty in a way the Uzi simply doesn't for that very same reason. I mean, do I really want a 'civilized' metal pedal? And yet…
    So, basically, I've been trying for a week now, ever since I got my Uzi, to decide which gets the 'Metal' spot on my board, to no avail. They each can more than do the job (my idea of 'metal', so far as playing it goes, being mostly just a tad beyond Theory of a Deadman), but in slightly different ways.

    I had an original pro co ratt and it died. Got a Ratt 2 and way later another one and neither came up to the sound of the original. Does anyone have an opinion on any pedal able to scream like the first Ratts would?

    RAT nunca me gustará. Uzi tiene algo interesante en su perilla "Bias". Mejor el Joyo.
