- This is the Joyo Uzi pedal - an extremely affordable take on the high gain Marshall-esque tones of the Friedman BE-OD pedal!

The Uzi might have been around for a while, but I had slept on it until now. Then I got the Joyo Dark Flame for a video and realized how good these budget pedals could really be! So, when I spotted the Uzi for sale near me for the super cheap price of €30, I went for it - and this is what it can do!
But for under $50 or €50 brand new, the Uzi is a bit of a steal. It’s based on - some may even say it’s a clone of - the iconic Friedman BE-OD pedal, which is based on the Friedman BE-100 amplifier, which is based on a few different high gains Marshalls like the JCM 800. And that all means we can expect the Uzi to turn our clean amps into snarling, rock and roll monsters!
The Uzi has six main controls to sculpt your tones: big Volume and Gain knobs at the top, and then four mini EQ controls - Low, Mid, High, and Bias. The Bias control is similar to the BE-OD’s Tight control, and lets you filter out unwanted low end to tighten up your signal and get more clarity in your guitar tone, especially at higher gain levels. In short, it’s almost like a Chug knob! The Uzi is housed in a solid metal chassis, with extra red mood lighting if you want it, and you power it via a standard 9 volt power supply.
But for $50, how good can it sound? That’s what we’re about to find out! In the video, I put the Uzi through its paces in as many different musical genres as I can, from pop and blues to indie, classic rock, punk, alternative rock, metal, and more.
Using my Fender Telecaster for single coil tones, and my humbucker-equipped Epiphone Les Paul, I also try the pedal into a dirty amp, and at the end I do a couple of loops to test the extremes with the settings.

My setup was as follows: I ran the Uzi straight into my Hughes & Kettner Black Spirit 200 head. That went from the amp’s Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That's it. No post-processing on the sounds was done. Oh, and I used my Boss RC-10R to play the loops.

Love that you tested it on different settings for each genre. Was torn between this and the Caline Jaguar but was sold on this the moment I heard the heavy metal riffs and leads
Happy you found the video useful! The Uzi is actually surprisingly versatile, so it works great for so many different genres. Actually I'd never heard of the Jaguar but that looks pretty cool too 😅

I have this pedal as well as a Revv G4. I use the G4 more due to the crisper tone and lower noise floor. However I love both of them, they both sound great 😃
Yep, the G4 is definitely quieter, and it's just perfect for modern genres where you need that extra clarity and punch. The Uzi is great for the old school dirty rock and roll ;) Both great though, and together you can cover any kind of gain you'll ever need!
Man that Epiphone Les Paul is beautiful. The pedal sounds pretty good too.

I've had one of these pedals for a while now, and it gives me all the gain I need. I'm playing it through a Hot Rod Deluxe with a pretty much unusable (for my needs) dirty channel. I actually really like having the bias more on the Mesa side (at around 10 oclock). From there, I boost it with the Joyo Baatsin overdrive in 808 mode (Volume at 10, drive at 0). It tightens it up really nicely, and sounds killer!!
Oh... and that blue Tele of yours is sexy as hell!

Great video on the JOYO UZI. Sounds like it will work well for Metal and heavier rock music. I have the Railhammer Anvil pickup and I am confident that the JOYO will work with that . Blessings!

Yes, I love high gain tele! The noise is just part of the charm, nothing a subtle gate can't fix.
@@alfianbanjaransari4096 Exactly, the gate's there if you really need it and all good! You can't beat the bite of a Tele bridge pickup with some high gain.

P.S. Try the Dirty Shirley pedal if you haven't already. That is an amazing pedal for me (after I learned that is has a gain trim pot inside I can turn down!). I'm also not sure anyone has paid homage to, or cloned, it for a more affordable price yet either! I also need to try the Friedman Small Box pedal...

In one of your other related pedal test videos, I've been asking, if this would be the right choice for me, or maybe JOYO Dark Flame, JOYO Lion's Roar or JOYO Old School, considering I need one decent, "overall" solution for playing '80s style glam & hard rock music?
I'm planning to use the ovedrive/distortion pedal in pair with a JOYO Aquarius delay pedal.

You are a riff machine! Your riffs and „xyz inspired“ snippets are so helpful to get a good impression of the product you are demonstrating. Thank you. I kind of wish manufactures would stay away from those martial names. I really mean it. I tend to boycott such products and, yes, quite inconsequently bought the UZI anyways. I said it before: I love all the Joyo stuff. I have absolutely no problem with buying clones because I have bought so much authentic gear in my life. Or as Coco Chanel once said: “If you want to be original, be ready to be copied”. Now, that is a statement of self-confidence and inner strength isn‘t it😊. No wasting time with lawsuits… just keep on creating. Rock solid attitude. Chapeau…

As long as I enjoy playing them there will be more videos like this :) There is an odd trend that's been going on for decades in our business with names that could be considered quite lewd... the Big Muff and almost all Friedman products spring to mind, although there's loads more. And then there's the weapon ones, and of course, brands like Thorpy FX have it in their DNA too. Perhaps these things just go well with the loud noises of rock and roll!

I have it for a long time and it's very useful. I also add a carcosa fuzz pedal behind this distortion pedal and a Queequeg Sup Octave... 🤘
Great tip! I have a Carcosa and will be testing that out today ;) And I don't have a Queeqeug, but other octave pedals that'll fill that gap for me too!
@@RichWordsMusic I have the first version of the Queequeg and it is unique. The second pedal version of the Queequeg is similar but different, it has more options for suboctave tones, but it has also a different character. These suboctave pedals are different in comparison with other octave pedals. I use my Queequeg for solo parts and I love it.
Uzi is a great metal tone distortion and sound better with down tuned or baritone guitars. though the noise is horrendous at maxed levels. A noise gate is needed. Overall, it's worth every dime.

@@RichWordsMusic it’s awesome. Its hyper tweek able with multiple eq’s the global EQ is priceless for making it your own. Im in week 3 I think and with my limited time with it so far I am very satisfied with its performance. I figured out how to WDW with it and my thunder 99 and a extra pair of cabs but im mostly running it alone or with my EHX 44 mag and another 112 cab. It’s worth well more than they charge for it. I’m kicking myself for waiting this long

For me personally, I would take the Dark Flame if you were going to play more modern metal, and the Uzi if you planned to play classic metal and hard rock.
