As an alumni, I’ll throw in a few suggestions that I think are key for anyone. Stuff I wish I paid a lot more attention to back in my earliest college days. 1. Start EVERY project immediately or as early as possible. A good rule of thumb is to get started within the first 24 hours. The easiest way is to read through the given assignment, understand the requirements, write-out your ideas for the project. Words, phrases, descriptions, whatever. Even if you don’t use all of it, you’ve at least got the ball rolling and the creative juices flowing in your head. From there, develop doodles, thumbnails, sketches, and keep building the project up bit by bit. There are several benefits to this approach. - you can go through several iterations of a piece of work, and switch gears relatively easily if you don’t like how it turns out, which brings you to… - whether you get it right the first time, or go through a few tries, you tend to produce your best quality work thus way. - you can finish a project long before it’s due, which frees up your time in a big way, for you to focus on anything else you want. - you can kill procrastination, and end the need for last minute all-nighters. Doing projects the night before it’s due will guarantee lousy artwork, and faster burn-out. - so if you like having your weekends free, and not having to think about schoolwork while you’re having fun… start your projects early. 2. Learn about money and business while you’re at SCAD or any college. Take one or more courses in; - business management / starting your own business - money management - investment basics - accounting I’d suggest taking such a course at another (state) school, or take a course online (free or paid). Better yet, if your Mom, Dad, uncle, cousin or family friend is a business professional that can teach you these essential skills, ask them to teach you. Just make sure you learn this stuff (and maybe even try it out) before you graduate. “What if I start something and fail?” What’s more valuable, starting a business in college and failing, or, not trying at all, and leaving yourself at the mercy of an erratic job-market after you graduate? There are no guarantees, but, I prefer having more options. 3. Network. Always, always network. Make friends, and engage people for the long-term. Obviously, some people will not be a good fit, but there are more than a handful of peers that can be helpful in the future. All the best.
Some other stuff as another Sophomore at SCAD, some supplies are 100% better to buy at Blick over Ex Libris, as Ex Libris sells their supplies at the retail value, Blick will offer discounts especially as a student! Secondly, classes are VERY competitive to get into, I always plan ahead for classes I am 100% sure I know I want to take as well as at least 2-4 backup classes that I need for my major. that way when you don't get into your top classes for the quarter, you have an idea of what else to look for. Don't be surprised if you don't make it into any of your major classes for the first year (or second depending on your life), not many do ^_^" Aside from that though, the classes and curriculum is pretty professional and I've had a lot of learning and would recommend it to anyone who wants to be committed to the programs
ah, crazy... I haven't been at SCAD for like 30 years almost (went 1993-1997). nice to see they still have the 2.5 hour classes and no Friday classes for general students (while I was there I think Architecture students had Friday classes). kinda want to visit (only went back once... in like 1998, to see some friends still living in town)
Thank you for these videos! As I've seen other people comment, I'll be going to SCAD in the fall for animation. Your videos have been such a tremendous help to me and helped me feel comfortable and prepared for SCAD. Thank you, I hope you're having a great day :)
i’m a junior in high school, so this is the time i have to think about colleges, and scad is one i’m interested in. one: for the variety of classes, and two: the cushion it provides for graduates. i’m still unsure with what i want as a future career but visual arts has been the ONLY thing i’m good at. i struggle a lot in a traditional class setting and i’m not a fast worker, so my grades in every class besides art are pretty bad (for now). of course college is bound to be challenging but i don’t want to get myself into something that’s out of my league. i do want a challenge but i don’t want to be pushed to the point that i no longer enjoy art, or that it becomes a burden.
Just wanna thank you for making these videos! I’m a senior in high school and SCAD is turning out to be one of my top choices for Sound Design. Your videos have been a pretty big cornerstone in my college research so thank you for doing what you do. I’ll be taking the tour this October and I’m super excited! 💛🖤
Also if you are an artist bring what you have because supplies can be very pricey (around $200 USD) for EACH studio class and you are usually taking 2 of them every 2 1/2 months. If you have paints, paint brushes, pencils, mircons, kneaded eraser, regular eraser, charcoal etc bring it unless you can afford to blow a bag. Blick art store is drastically cheaper here than SCAD's art supply store Ex Libris and most of the supplies I listed you will 1000% use every studio class and for homework especially your first and second quarter.
Thank so much for this, SCAD is my dream school especially bc its in my home state which is perfect for me bc I had to leave my home to move across the world so all of this info is so helpful
I really really wanna go to this college because I was raised in Savannah, we had to move away but I still miss Savannah, all my friends are/was there. Most of my family is still there. And I always wanted to move back to Savannah since I was a kid. When I went to the SCAD college tour, it felt like home. This place was calling my name. I... I can't explain it but I NEED to be here. I got the effort, the dedication, and the skill. At the end of the day, no matter what college we go to, no matter how hard the classes are, I really feel like SCAD is gonna provide me all the help I need, I will be using that bewell metal health center as a second home because I come from a stressful life and home and it's just non-stop stress, pain, failure and hurt. I gotta get away from my home and join this college because I truly believe they're gonna help me. Thank you so much for providing me and other inspiring people this helpful info.
I am completely in the same boat when it comes to Atlanta. I completely resonated with your comment as a kid who had to pick up and move so abruptly. My heart is still in Atlanta. Every time we go back to Atlanta, I just feel it calling my name, everything is home to me. I'm so excited about going to SCAD because it means I'll get to be home again and no matter what, I'm never giving up on Atlanta. That's my home. The Bee Well center is also gonna come in handy for me as a kid whose parents constantly tried to doubt my decision-making about any and everything I do. I feel like a shell of who I used to be and it's not fair. I need to get back in touch with film and my home. Atlanta is the one for me and I'm so grateful to SCAD. Very very grateful.
okay but also the hive cafe is mid but there are other dining halls but you will have to take the bus or drive, if you can bring your car to college BRING IT. The only people who didn't bring it is because they live too far away or don't want to pay to get the car shipped. Having a car here is such a luxury. If you are a straight female the guys here are slim pickings too but not awful but like I said it's slim pickings. Scad is also a dry campus meaning no alc allowed or nicotine within 50 feet of any scad building regardless of you're age! Scad is dope tho, those r just all the cons which aren't big in the big picture.
SCAD provides numerous opportunities and resources. However, they won't handhold you. It's entirely up to YOU to attend events, participate in workshops, and go above and beyond to better your craft.
Congrats on finishing your first year! I just graduated from SCAD as ITGM. I was a Monty kid. I pretty much dormed the entire time at Monty, apart from home for covid. Convenient because my major classes are at Monty as well. I recommend to network as much as you can while at SCAD those connections will help in the long run. Especially when it comes for starting senior capstones and even more job hunting (though I don't know if capstones are a thing outside ITGM and Animation, I'd imagine so). I always say dining halls are hit or miss. So looking out on the app for dining gives you a heads up as to what's being served that time. And the order up app is a good go to if nothing good is being served. Carnival is a must go to place. I always recommend investing in equipment for the long run. For me. I bought my own wacom pen for the Monty cintiqs and huion for my computer for late night modelling in the dorm. If you see yourself using programs that you'll use in the future buy them for yourself. I bought Zbrush. If what you use is perpetual go with that it'll end up being cheaper than doing so monthly. ITGM had our capstone games showcased at an event with SCAD called Entelechy, you have 20wks to create a game. My team made a multiplayer FFA with rubber ducks. QuackTown SmackDown. Hopefully coming to steam. But try not to get burned out that's a thing that happens at SCAD lol take some breaks, continue to do great things. Enjoy and continue to grow your next 3 years :)
Thanks for this video, I'm planning to go to SCAD for Animation starting this fall and this answered some of my questions! So each of the three classes in a given quarter are twice a week? I've heard that the workload at SCAD can be pretty intense, do you find this to be the case? Thanks!

That’s a really good question, they usually recommend a brand if they have one they really like but it’s usually not required to have a specific brand, just a recommendation.
Do you absolutely need a portfolio to be accepted? Most of my work is really sketchy and not finished pieces that could be used for a portfolio:/ I’m currently working on one but it probably won’t be finished until December/January ish but I’m worried that may be too late to apply
I would also like to add that while not required for their undergraduate programs you do need a portfolio for a graduate program which has to be specific for your major, I know you already probably already applied considering you made this comment 4 months ago, but I was just letting you know in case you were considering doing a graduate program (:
Anna Katherine can you give me an idea of the tools that we should bring with to set the beds at the proper height? Also is there a way to find out what size the windows are in Turner House and whether we need to bring a curtain rod or is there one already there? Can we even hang a curtain rod? Thanks
You can’t change the height of the beds at scad. Not sure about the window size, just standard small window I guess. And you should bring a curtain rod yes. I hope you have a nice move in!
i’m currently looking at applying to scad for photography and i was wondering if you had to do a lot of drawing classes or classes outside of your major? and if so are you expected to be great at it when it is not your major
Hi! You can look up what classes you have to take for your major by searching “scad photography curriculum”! Most people have to take drawing, color theory, design, etc. And professors know that not everyone is good at drawing so they will typically grade on how much you improve throughout the class rather than skill. It depends if what Professor you get, but most of them are very understanding.
I seen people apply with 2.5 gpa and lower artists to scad would they accept them?????? Seems really wild if they do, if they do than that’s good for artist, I know couple of my friends are amazing at drawing but they finish schoo with 2.0 and under
Yeah scad doesn’t care about gpa for admission but once you start taking classes at scad your gpa starts to matter more to get scholarships and to get into the scad pro programs
yes totally! i literally had a 2.7 gpa and i got accepted! scad understands that your grades don't define your skills or talents that you're able to showcase, and i'm walking proof lol
Thank you so much for these videos! My daughter is an incoming Freshman and will be living in Honey. I have an odd question that I reached out to housing about but they were unsure and unable to check on it. I'm hoping you can shed light on it for us. We noticed that while most rooms in the Hive buildings have a single window between the two beds, some rooms have a larger double window that goes behind one of the beds. These are the rooms on the end of the building near the stairwell. Housing said those are either the high numbers like 315-16 or low numbers like 301-302. Any clue if those double window rooms are the high or low numbers? Her room assignment is a low number and we are trying to plan for the window placement and the size of curtain.
I’m from Illinois and considering scad. Might tour during spring break. the laundry cost is crazy but like no health center????? Is that legal 😂 sounds a bit unsafe like what if I need a bandaid and I don’t have any
Hello. We are Korean. My daughter passed B.F.A. She earned her scholarship. However, she plans to take a leave of absence immediately after enrolling for financial reasons. Is this possible and how many years will it be possible? I really appreciate your video.
Hey! First off, thank you for the video :) this is super dope. Secondly, I heard that at SCAD if you have 2+ absences in a class, it’s an insta fail for that class TT would you say this is a big issue to consider or kind of a minor thing
Thanks so much for watching! It is actually your 5th absence in class that gives you the automatic fail. I think it’s a minor thing because if you miss 5 classes that’s 25% of the class so you’d be missing a lot anyway
Im starting my freshman year next month and this video was so helpful. Im going to be moving into the turner house and im kind of scared because people are saying its very small and just bad. I just wanted to know if you knew anything about it or if changing my housing would be good i just want to live comfortably and this is all making me kinda panic 😅
There’s nothing bad about turner, it’s just kind of a running joke on campus because it’s not the hive. I know lots of people who live in turner and love it!
Yes! They will teach you everything. My roommate is currently in a drawing for interior class right now, and 2 drawing foundations are required for everyone
Does doing AP courses qualify for semester credits that count towards completing the 120 credits needed for a degree? Also, what are the AP courses accepted by SCAD for semester credits?
It depends on the major, as a graphic design major I use a MacBook Pro because it handles creative cloud best but for example architecture people like to use stronger pcs for their programs
I went to SCAD in the late 80s. I had a few classes where someone in their 40s was in my class. That's been a long time ago, but I'm sure it's still relevant.
I'm a sophomore at scad this year, we had to pull out parent plus loans to cover tuition, you should always apply for scholarships! SCAD requires a portfolio and GPA, so you will get academic scholarships that help with tuition as long as you can keep up a 3.0 GPA at SCAD!
hiii seeing this now and i just got the academic scholarship which is only 5k a year IF you live on campus. which is a lot …. until u remember the yearly tuition
Hey, could you give an idea what the kit usually contains?? I’m a transfer student and I’m planning to bringing as much as I can from my home country since it’s super cheap here.. so it would be great if you could tell me what the contents generally are so i can the basic requirements at least Ps Love the vid and your other vids they are super helpful!

Yes the classes are twice a week. I think the workload isn’t awful as long as you are good at managing your time.
I have a question about tuition because it’s realllyyyy expensive, did you get any scholarships or financial aid? And if so how?

Im starting my freshman year next month and this video was so helpful. Im going to be moving into the turner house and im kind of scared because people are saying its very small and just bad. I just wanted to know if you knew anything about it or if changing my housing would be good i just want to live comfortably and this is all making me kinda panic 😅
There’s nothing bad about turner, it’s just kind of a running joke on campus because it’s not the hive. I know lots of people who live in turner and love it!
Why are the kits not included in tuition
I don’t know! Renaissance students got their supplies free so why can’t we 🤦🏻♀️
If u don’t know how to hand drawn can u still do interior design
Yes! They will teach you everything. My roommate is currently in a drawing for interior class right now, and 2 drawing foundations are required for everyone
@@AnnaKatherineYT one more thing how many years is it ?
People normally finish their degree in 4 years but if you take summer classes or have more credits done early you can graduate a few quarters early
Does doing AP courses qualify for semester credits that count towards completing the 120 credits needed for a degree? Also, what are the AP courses accepted by SCAD for semester credits?
They do! You can find the list online on the SCAD website.
heyy can I take fashion design as minor and cinematography course as my major??
Yes I think so check out scads website for the full list of majors and minors- you can pair anything together!
can any student enter the hive? or do you have to live there?
Any student can enter the hive with their id card to get to SCADfit, beefuel, and the dining hall
is there a preference for what kind of laptop students should use at scad?
It depends on the major, as a graphic design major I use a MacBook Pro because it handles creative cloud best but for example architecture people like to use stronger pcs for their programs
@@AnnaKatherineYT thank you! I’m going to be an illustration major, and was wondering if a MacBook was the way to go
hope to meet you in September!
Is it too late for me I’m 26 y/old
No way that’s young plenty of plp retired attend too! ☺️
I went to SCAD in the late 80s. I had a few classes where someone in their 40s was in my class. That's been a long time ago, but I'm sure it's still relevant.
hi! how do u manage to pay for the tuition? im interested in SCAD but the tuition is scary ;;
@@hyacinthz What did your grades look like because I saw someone else say they got 10k in academic scholarships from SCAD?
@@l00sechange 5.8 on 6.0 weighted scale 😭☝️
@@l00sechange thats not including the portfolio scholarship so maybe thats why
TY
Hey, could you give an idea what the kit usually contains?? I’m a transfer student and I’m planning to bringing as much as I can from my home country since it’s super cheap here.. so it would be great if you could tell me what the contents generally are so i can the basic requirements at least
Ps Love the vid and your other vids they are super helpful!
It depends on the class, your professor will send out the list when the syllabus comes out!
@@AnnaKatherineYT great thanks a lot! Also wanted to ask if the syllabus comes before the quarter starts? If so, how much before? Thanks a lot 😊💗
It comes out about a week before the quarter starts. Some professors even do it earlier like my graphic design one just came out.
@@AnnaKatherineYT thanks a lot!!! Love you vids btw binging them these days :)
Thank you so much for watching! I hope you have an amazing time at scad!
How is living in Savannah??
