  • The Boeing/Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche was an advanced U.S. Army military helicopter intended for the armed reconnaissance role, incorporating stealth technologies. It was also intended to designate targets for the AH-64 Apache. The RAH-66 program was canceled in 2004 before it was fielded.

      You commented it 2 year ago according to youtube (I write it 2023 so your comment is from 2021 right?)
      Well if it is, it wasn't a 11 year old design, this design existed since the 90s.
      It's first flight was in 1996.
      Not the design, the heli itself almost 27 year old. Or was 25 when you wrote this comment.
      It was canceled in 2004.

    • @FlyboyHelosim
      @FlyboyHelosim 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it was cancelled, although some of its technology went into other helicopters. There wasn't an 'attack helicopter' used in the Bin Laden raid, it was a modified Black Hawk troop transport.

  • @SphinctersForever
    @SphinctersForever 12 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Funny thing about project cancellations though: Many projects are actually part of technology development cover stories used for new ideas that are intended to be integrated into other things. It is entirely possible that Commanche was just a development platform for quiet rotor technology (which WAS used in the OBL raid, you recall) and probably other technologies. This happens all the time. They have to be able to spend the money in such a way as not to raise certain red flags.

    • @UnitSe7en
      @UnitSe7en 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, except Comanche really was canceled. This wasn't some bait-and-switch magician trick. There is no black helicopter project that nobody knows about. If a system like Comanche was used in the field, people would know about it - Just like everyone knew about Nighthawk, which, if they didn't know about it before, everyone certainly knew about after the first time it ruined Saddam's day, despite it still being classified and not confirmed.
      There are black projects, and then there are projects that have real work to perform on a battlefield. Staying black may be well and good for U-2 or SR-71 at 70,000 feet, but not down in the trees where Comanche operates. You're delusional if you think otherwise.

    The Comanche program officially ended in 2004. I think unofficially it continued under another name. Im guessing one reason is the Comanche was a prelude to a very quiet stealth helicopter. The multi-role attack fighter F-35 with VTOL mode take most of the air support away from any other jet or heli, and the reconnaissance role (the R from RAH-66) is taken by far more cheaper drones.

    • @CPD0123a
      @CPD0123a 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Here's what I believe happened with this--Army says back in the 90's, or whenever this was started, "We need a helicopter to replace the aging AH-6 and Apache fleet, and we need it to be stealthy like everything else we have now." So, they begin development. Then, parallel teams work on constantly upgrading the existing helicopters, and we see the rise of UAV's, taking the position of the stealth chopper. So, what happens? You get a helicopter that cost billions to develop, and it totally unnecessary.
      As for the small arms argument made by Sobakus, helicopters fly fast and relatively low to the ground and are actually fairly undetectable, until they're already at their target. These aren't gunship meant to deal massive firepower and stay there, they just fly around, finding enemy positions. You're most likely not going to have time to ready your weapons and fire accurately at them before they're long gone.

    • @FlyboyHelosim
      @FlyboyHelosim 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sobakus Of course it could withstand 9mm Parabellum! I saw a video somewhere saying that the Comanche was ballistically tolerant to 12.7mm, probably higher caliber in vital areas. I don't know where you're getting 200 kilograms from, but remember that composite armor is lighter and stronger than traditional metal-based armors. Anyway, the Comanche was designed for high-tech, high-intensity warfare... a scenario in which infantry with small arms would be low.

    • @Unbrutal_Rawr
      @Unbrutal_Rawr 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flyboy Well all right, I haven't thought about composite armour tbh, haven't heard of it used in aircraft so far. Still it's no more than half a ton, which is pretty shabby. Any way, Sikorsky's developing something truly amazing now that will perform superbly in real word scenarios. Stealth is no good for a helicopter since it's always in the midst of things providing direct support to ground troops, avoiding radar simply by flying low. Furthermore, the US army relies on drones for scout duties nowadays, that must be the main reason for Comanche's cancellation.

    According to Wikipedia, $7 billions were spent just before mass production in 2004, and two (2) prototypes were produced (as seen in the footage) before being placed on display after the program's cancellation. The reasons being: drones being more suited to the task, cost hikes and insurmountable design problems.

    The RAH-66 Comanche was a scout/attack helicopter, that's why you would want Hellfires. The Comanche did not have heavy machinegun pods in its inventory... just precision aimed/guided weaponry... even the bog standard Hydra were much more effective coupled with the Comanche's Integrated Flight And Fire Control System. Hell, Kiowa's are for scouting roles and that's about it... yet they still carry Hellfires.

    TikiShootah, the Commanche was designed to get behind enemy lines undetected by enemy radars from the ground or from the air. Once in position, the Commanche would relay information about enemy targets to friendlies which would actually do the attacks while under cover. Meanwhile the Commanche maybe in areas that would have left it exposed to radar hits.

    Many people make the mistake of looking at the numbers alone. You are right that without an eastern front the war would have been a much bloodier affair for America and her allies. But by the second half of the war...American factories were pumping out thousands of fighters, bombers,tanks and various naval warships. Wheras the Germans entire infrastructure, factories and population centers were very vulnerable to allied bombers. This would be true even without an eastern front.

    The RAH-66 was never intended to replace the AH-64. The RAH-66 was supposed to replace the OH-6, OH-58, UH-1 and AH-1 in scout role. Now we have obsolete crappy scouts still in need of replacement.
    RAH-66 was supposed to carry 500rds 20mm and 24 2.75in rockets which would have been more likely for scout role or 6 Hellfires internally.
    Ironically the AH-64 Block III's are supposed to cost 41 million each while the RAH-66 was cancelled for costing 40 million each.
