It's my favorite Kanye album. It was so risky. I remember at the time Kanye was getting a lot of flack for how emotional the album was and how he was rapping in melody and whatnot. Funny how you look around at hip hop today and that's literally what EVERYBODY is doing. Kanye may be an ass sometimes but when it comes to music the man knows what he's doing
BeeleeDatPleighboi 100 not sure about a 'tpain style'? I don't think using autotune means it was like T-Pain, it was a very different use. Although Kanye actually did develop his use of autotune because he had to sing T-Pain's part in ''Good Life'' on tour!
the way you closed out the video was dope, man. Drake is definitely one of the best, and sadly, one of the most hated. hopefully some day people can just come to respect the timeless music he’s given us.
All these people that think if you enjoy Drake you can't appreciate any other music. It's pathetic. Enjoy what you want to enjoy. That's what music is for.
Nicholas Lim ZJ the hate is clearly more focused on Drake than nerdwriter. Not many, if any, people are saying he shouldn't do a video on Drake. They're saying they'd rather get a video on some other rapper
creative username i don't like drake either. there are so much better rappers/lyricist that don't get the recognition that these people with GHOST WRITTERS get.
Here's the thing, for people who can't believe Nerdwriter is praising Drake: Drake is one of the best in the world at what he does. If we're looking at current commercial rap/r&b, I'll easily take Drake over the dozens of other artists who are just trying to sound like him. His talent as an individual is up for debate. But he's great at picking amazing beats with a fresh sound to them. And while he may use ghostwriters, would those ghostwriters sound as good over that great production as Drake? Would that mix of great production and songwriting be reaching mass amounts of people if it wasn't being performed by someone as marketable as Drake? No. Just like how a 50-year-old Swedish guy might be a great writer of pop songs, but doesn't have the voice, charisma and appeal of the twentysomething female singers he sells his songs to. Drake is a pop artist at the end of the day. Pop music has always appropriated and commercialized whatever genre is most "in" at the time. Right now that just happens to be hip hop. Britney Spears isn't what I think of when I think "artistic integrity." But nobody is gonna convince me that "Toxic" isn't a fucking gem of a pop song. I don't care that she didn't write it, or if the meaning isn't deep - the record exists and it's catchy as hell and it sounds great. Same goes for Drake's best songs. Criticising a pop star for not writing their songs is like criticising an actor for not writing their own dialogue.
it's just a circle jerk in these comments. i find drake annoying but can't deny that he is one of the best pop (pop in its original meaning, popular) songwriters we have. he has great musicality.
Your analogy is false ; when an actor plays a movie, we know it's fake because it is an on screen story. At the end, we have the credits with the name of almost everyone who worked on it, and when we see the actor irl, they (the actor or the actress) are dissociating from their character ; we know they technically have nothing to do with their character except for their interpretation. In the music industry, lots and lots of singers pretends IRL that they're the source of the music they produce ; they pretend to have written the song when very often those songs are written by some guy or stolen from smaller artists. That's why, as catchy as it may be, mainstream production ( and not only for pop, also for other genres) is really sad and lowkey fucked up sometimes. the actor's authenticity is in the fact that both part, the maker and the watcher know the role is never real, on the other hand the music industry can allow the artist to play a role that the public is not aware of, and bye bye authenticity
I agree with you on the Drake being a pop star thing, but one thing that you got wrong was that you said other rappers wanna sound like him, because Drake is well known for biting the style and flow of other artists and acting like he invented them.
I don't like when channels inquire other big channels. One time I found a kaptainkristian video in IGN (I think) and I never felt so betrayed. I glad youtube algorithms is smarter know so I could watch it.
UnpredictableSB why did you feel betrayed? You can still watch the video. The only reason I prefer video essayists to be solo is that I then know that they had complete control when choosing a topic and executing a video
Many many many many nights were spent listening to this song back in 2016 on the way to my ex gf's house, or waiting for her in the parking lot at her job. I felt and still feel it so deeply. This whole album brings back more memories than any other album I can remember. 2016 was the best year of my life. Does anyone else feel this way? Miss those times :/
Justanamebro I don't know... Kendrick's music is way more interesting, but you don't have to dig so deep to find its value. The analysis would be easier to make. Sometimes it is nice to look at the work of a not-so-interesting artist and find some good there...
Well if you compare artists through the eyes of the general public(which is the one that matters) then Drake is good. I personally don't listen to his music that much, but some of his songs are catchy and fun. You have to give credit where credit is due.
When a nigga gets to the top, why is it human nature to hate him. If you had the talent, skill and mind set to do the same you would. But because you cant (and/or you favorite artist) you just hate instead
nah man, plenty of people will hate anyone or anything. hate is not an exclusivity to hip-hop. and if you think that drake can only be hated because he's a nigga making it to the top in the world of hip-hop, then again, you're trying to focus the blame on skin rather than actually look at what the guy does. what i'm saying is as soon as you bring up race, then at that point, you can bring 100% of all blame on just that. no more justification for anything.
Drake is a fantastic contenporary artist. Sad to see that guys like him and Kanye get so much hate. If you don't like it its fine to go back to the music you do like. But its so frustrating to see so many people hating on pop (and especially hiphop) music these days. You don't see me or other hiphop fans rage on Madonna or Gun 'n Roses videos, get a grip of yourself. Great video once again! Keep it up man!
The fact that Majid Jordan composed Feel No Ways makes 100% sense I think it’s the best track on the album. And even more than that, top 15 in all of Drake’s discography.
For people who 'don't like rap'. Don't just assume something bass because it's on a genre. Even if u don't like drake, you could find true genius and at least something u like throughout the vast abundance of it. You have Eminem, Kanye, tribe called quest, chance the rapper, jay z, snoop, public enemy, and so many more. If you look far enough you'll find something you like and trust me: it's worth it. Two albums I'll recommend for someone trying to get into hip hop from a rock background (like I was) are Marshall Mathers LP by Eminem and my beautiful dark twisted fantasy by Kanye.
Casey Grae You all are soft af. Hip Hop is becoming the most popular genre rn. yall are old and stuck in the past. what do other genres do that are better than rap. dont u dare say Pop 😂
An ignorant comment section who can't think for themselves and flock like sheep on the 'kendrick is goat' and 'drake is fake' train. what else is new. just because an artist is played by basic people, doesn't mean they're a basic artist. there's a lot more to drake than you would assume.
Using the two sounds together in a time where it's so removed from the time in which it was popular. It's about the phenomenology. Just because it is simple that the producer used two readily available sounds doesn't make the effort less "genius" because before him, it was never used in the way that he did. If you just don't like the song, that's cool as well. Taste is never wrong.
it's true that i'm not a fan of drake or similar music, but i'm not trying to take away from him - i'm meaning that nerdwriter's reasons for saying it's great don't make sense to me
You mean in a current time derided by it's lack of originality, and over reliance on old established tropes, brand recognition and re appropriation of past artistic achievements. A time when nostalgia baiting and plundering reigns supreme and it's meticulously exploited for global mass profit. I enjoyed the historical aspects of the video, well researched and presented info.
Even in Fair Use, they ask the owner of the copyright(s) if they want to leave it up and if so do they want to monetize it. Since this video is VERY favorable to the subject matter and gets views in the six figures, it's likely not to be taken down since asking permission has been implemented. They also check the poster's channel data and here they would find "review" making it easier to leave it up citing fair use. So chances are Drake and his peeps would say leave it up and 'keep your pennies'.
Can you do a video essay on the fascination with Closer- The Chainsmokers? Lyrically it makes little sense, but why does it elicit feelings of nostalgia for past relationship or nostalgia for relationships we've never even had...
I don't think ti fair for him to do video requests as the end result won't be authentic. He wouldn't anaylse it as well as something he is genuinely attracted too.
Not necessarily. His point was actually that in joining with Drake's vocals and brand of lyricism, the beat and mix was prevented from falling into a cliche.
Why did Billy Ray Cyrus's debut album top the album charts for 17 weeks when it was released in 1991? Why is Drake so terrible? Because his voice sounds so muted. There's expressing your voice subtly, so you don't really play to a lot of emotional swell, but Drake has this way of using his voice that its like he's singing into the kind of Microphone they use on NPR where they cover it to mute out the voices. You can like that, but I for one really don't. Combined with really repetitive beats, I don't feel the emotion of his songs. It just feels like he's droning on. There isn't any swell, there isn't any build up, and you don't always need it but I feel like Drake is trying to convey strong emotions over beats and a vocal production that tries to completely eschew strong vocals.
Because you're reading music nerds who, unlike the majority of the population, are too sensitive to the things that make good music to stomach drake's trash. The majority of pop songs out there are just horrible if you actually listen to them. The fact is that people just don't care about good quality music, and the music industry really likes the money that drake makes.
At first when I saw this was another video of Nerdwriter deconstructing a song I had visions of when I think Evan overly analysed a Bon Iver tune a few months back. But this video was so brilliantly put together.. such energy in the sharp editing and visuals and a really interesting backstory to the creation of a pop song... which is not a bad tune either. THUMBS UP!!
Mario Scotto 808s brought emotiveness to the rap world, MBDTF redefined a whole decade's Pop Rap genre. Both very influencial, but 808s influence only started to blew up in very recent years with the emergence of Emo Rap
You're my new favourite channel! Started watching at the beginning of January (late to the Nerdwriter game!) but did see your Casey video maybe half a year ago. I love how you deconstruct everything from movies, themes, music, comedy, art, it goes on and on! And you speak so well: engaging and well paced, it really keeps your attention. As two people in media (photo/video background) my partner and I are thoroughly enjoying your work and look forward to your release every week! Thank you!
how can people sit through cringy Joey Graceffa and Trisha Paytas videos but sleep through these videos? this is such an underrated channel, WE NEED TO GET YOU TO A MILLION SUBS ASAP
Love that you talked about the instruments and tech behind production. I feel like a lot of fans have no clue what makes a song work beyond the "vibes" they feel or don't feel. Great references to other artists too.
@TheNerdWriter1 : Congrats on the subscriber milestone. I can't speak for everyone, but I keep coming back because, while I found you because of topic I know about and am interested in, you continue to expose me to new ideas and offer a easy way to understand these new topics. Keep up the good work.
I said at the time and still say now that even though One Dance, Controlla, & Hotline Bling were the hits from Views, Feel No Ways is the. best. track on that album! It has the most plays from me. It was the song that made me say, “who produced this??!” It’s so well done, and easily goes down as one of the best beats I’ve ever heard.
Feel no ways was the best song on the album.
jason m yup this and faithful. Dvsn made that song beautiful
U wit me and fire & desire
Weston Road Flows and Too Good are my personal faves
by farrrr
Facts
I know some of y'all don't like Drake, but what about these mad FCPX skills?? Shoutout to my editors.
I loved it. Tiny Drake dancing, the splatter effects. It was all so delightfully enjoyable.
With your enticing narrative and this mad editing it's almost on par with Vox's videos.
Nerdwriter1 Extremely well done
this is my favorite song of the year, from one of my favorite youtubers. great job, man! beautifully done.
How big is the Nerdwriter team now? Great vid.
The editing on this was noice

You're an intelligent man/woman/dog.
808's was Amazing though, how do people not like it
808s & Heartbreak is such a remarkable album.
Changed the rap game by himself, young kanye
It's my favorite Kanye album. It was so risky. I remember at the time Kanye was getting a lot of flack for how emotional the album was and how he was rapping in melody and whatnot. BeeleeDatPleighboi 100 808s is far more than auto-tune (which isn't really a T-pain thing. Remember One More Time by Daft Punk?).
Joel Monteiro that was vocoder
the way you closed out the video was dope, man. Drake is definitely one of the best, and sadly, one of the most hated. hopefully some day people can just come to respect the timeless music he’s given us.
hopelessly_g “ I don’t wanna die for them to miss me” 🎤🎤🎼
"feel no ways" was one of my favourite tracks on that album, makes for an amazing summer driving song
You know!!!!
What's up man, how's the life now?
takes me right back to summer 16!!
You're not original or musically inclined for not liking Drake.
Alan Munguia fuck off
It's true though
All these people that think if you enjoy Drake you can't appreciate any other music. It's pathetic. Enjoy what you want to enjoy. That's what music is for.
What's your point? He's good at making bangers and playing the businessman. That's all.
PC Disciple you mad?
lol Nerdwriter can do whatever the fuck he wants. Boohoo he did a video on a person I don't like!!!! Get over it. Great video.
Nicholas Lim ZJ the hate is clearly more focused on Drake than nerdwriter. Not many, if any, people are saying he shouldn't do a video on Drake. They're saying they'd rather get a video on some other rapper
Nicholas Lim ZJ You sound like a fanboy
He make a video deconstructing a song. Didn't refer to the words of the song.
I agree, I hate Drake's music but I watched this whole video and enjoyed how he presented his thought.
Feel no ways is amazing song.
I hate drake, hate modern rap in general, watched it anyway because it's nerdwriter
creative username wow bro ur taste is so superior
Homes never said it was superior simply stated what I don't like
creative username you don't have to say it for it to be apparent
creative username i don't like drake either. there are so much better rappers/lyricist that don't get the recognition that these people with GHOST WRITTERS get.
creative username noname Gypsy for example

I agree with you on the Drake being a pop star thing, but one thing that you got wrong was that you said other rappers wanna sound like him, because Drake is well known for biting the style and flow of other artists and acting like he invented them.
this is probably my favorite channel on TH-cam
This dude needs to hook up with Vox. They'd be so good together
Viwe Mbava His name is Evan Puschak 😁
Viwe Mbava I'd rather he not. I like that's he's independent, and it's not like he's lacking in production quality at all
I don't like when channels inquire other big channels.
Viwe Mbava he made his own channel for creative freedom
I'M SO GLAD PEOPLE RECOGNISE KANYE AS INFLUENTIAL
K Watch some of Vox's verious videos on rap. They almost never not mention Kanye.
jan_hein123 yeah, I've seen a few of their videos. You have a point
Vox's rap videos are really tight
K probably one of the most influential rappers. His influence can be heard everywhere
Efraín Ram I know. But people give him a bad rap because of his attitude at time. It pisses me off
I had no idea there was a link between Malcolm McLaren and Drake. The quality of the content on the nerdwriter just keeps improving.
Feel No Way is definitely the most underrated song on Views and just show how unique Drake really is. been a fan since 08 and "I'm still here dog"
Wow, Drake's ghost writer, producer and manager are truly gifted
While I see your point, someone has to pull through and perfrom
I think curators deserve respect too.
A Sloth True, I gotta admit they make good catchy music.
Please do Kendrick Lamar instead, would be way more interesting!
Justanamebro I don't know... Kendrick's music is way more interesting, but you don't have to dig so deep to find its value. The analysis would be easier to make. Sometimes it is nice to look at the work of a not-so-interesting artist and find some good there...
nah man other rappers can't even deconstruct that hot kendrick fire
A lot of people are talking about Kendrick, it's good to see other people's music decounstructed as well.
+Carbono 12 But he didn't just find some good in a not so interesting artist. He said Drake was one of the best lol.......
Well if you compare artists through the eyes of the general public(which is the one that matters) then Drake is good. I personally don't listen to his music that much, but some of his songs are catchy and fun. You have to give credit where credit is due.
Take Care was his best album IMO.
J Chuck NWTS
personally I like IYRTITL > NWTS > VIEWS > TAKE CARE > SO FAR GONE > THANK ME LATER
J Chuck If your reading this its too late is my favorite.
***** hahaha idk just didnt really dig that kinda drake and was pretty reliant on features but just my personal opinion aha
pitty the Weeknd wrote most of that
I’ve been subscribed for years and I can’t believe I’m just seeing this vid now. One of my fav artists deconstructed by one of my fav channels
just found this channel and i am hooked
When a nigga gets to the top, why is it human nature to hate him. If you had the talent, skill and mind set to do the same you would. But because you cant (and/or you favorite artist) you just hate instead
couldn't have said it better he's so high up and fan base is too good people just wanna bring him down but can't
No yeah, turn THIS into a race thing. Because that's totally what this is about.
bleuxi lmao nigga = person. Sorry for making you unconformable. But it is kinda a race thing because only in hip-hop they hate you when you make it.
nah man, plenty of people will hate anyone or anything. hate is not an exclusivity to hip-hop. and if you think that drake can only be hated because he's a nigga making it to the top in the world of hip-hop, then again, you're trying to focus the blame on skin rather than actually look at what the guy does.
what i'm saying is as soon as you bring up race, then at that point, you can bring 100% of all blame on just that. no more justification for anything.
bleuxi He didn't say 'nigga' to imply that it's a racial thing. He used it in the slang way, which just means person (as he said)
This was my favorite song on Views. Astounded by how deep this song actually is on the production level.
RIGHT!? same...
Drake is a fantastic contenporary artist. Sad to see that guys like him and Kanye get so much hate. If you don't like it its fine to go back to the music you do like. But its so frustrating to see so many people hating on pop (and especially hiphop) music these days. Its clear its not hate at all but LOVE! If they truly hated him, they won't care or have clicked the video.
Nothing but the truth was said!
Kanye has production credits on this as well, you can heavily hear his influence
The fact that Majid Jordan composed Feel No Ways makes 100% sense I think it’s the best track on the album. And even more than that, top 15 in all of Drake’s discography.
And Kanye produce it too
If I ask nerdwriter to make a Kendrick Lamar video, will I get likes
nick jacezko You will
nick jacezko say anything good about Kendrick and you'll get likes.
No fuck kendrick Lamar wack ass
Zoro 賊™ Obvious moron is obvious
he's made one on "ELEMENT."

Feels no Ways is a great song and dope beat
Drake is hands-down one of the greatest artists within the last 5 years.
10 years
ARTIST OF THE DECADE
@@richperes1291 you just agreed with him lol, his comment is 5 years old

And an individual song that can really prove rap being genuine is hey mama. Great breakout song for someone doubting the emotion in rap.
hey mama by who?
Jason John kanye west

Casey Grae You all are soft af. Hip Hop is becoming the most popular genre rn. yall are old and stuck in the past. what do other genres do that are better than rap. dont u dare say Pop 😂
An ignorant comment section who can't think for themselves and flock like sheep on the 'kendrick is goat' and 'drake is fake' train. what else is new.
just because an artist is played by basic people, doesn't mean they're a basic artist. there's a lot more to drake than you would assume.
Basic
deez Kendrick may not be the GOAT, but he’s a way better artist than Drake.
You like the drake that I like
the why is always more valuable than the what
The comment section is oozing pretentiousness
Feel No Ways and With Me were my two favorites off Views. Man, you're always killing it. Thank you for the entertainment
You're the only person who could get me to watch a video on drake
what, so he's a genius for combining two cliched sounds?
Using the two sounds together in a time where it's so removed from the time in which it was popular. It's about the phenomenology. Just because it is simple that the producer used two readily available sounds doesn't make the effort less "genius" because before him, it was never used in the way that he did. it's true that i'm not a fan of drake or similar music, but i'm not trying to take away from him - i'm meaning that nerdwriter's reasons for saying it's great don't make sense to me
I understand, I assumed he talked about that more in depth, but after scanning through again he didn't go that in depth. You're right bro.
that was an unexpectedly polite exchange!
‘Especially in those rare times the most popular artist is also one of the best’ awww 😭❤️
Great video! Hope it doesnt get taken down cause of copyrights
it won't this is fair use
+stoleNReed as if that ever stopped youtube from taking down a video

That Yamaha DX7 and 80's Pop music deserve a-whole new video for it's own
Drake is absolutely a great rapper. People who say he doesn't maybe don't understand his work.
The day the album came out, I listened to the whole thing through and this one stood out to me right away. I love it.
So in conclusion, the greatness from this song comes not from Drake, but from the guys who made the beat and mixed the audio tracks.
Not necessarily. His point was actually that in joining with Drake's vocals and brand of lyricism, the beat and mix was prevented from falling into a cliche.
This has absolutely nothing to do with plunderphonics
Feel no ways is one of the greatest driving home at night songs of all time
These video essays really shows how the quality of content on youtube is exploding upwards. Keep up the great work!
This comment section proves that Drake is a legend.. the impact he’s had on everyone this generation is impeccable.
How did TH-cam not ask for copyright claim on the songs on this video?
education purposes
Quick Question to the comments section... If Drake is so terrible, why did Views go 4x Platinum?
because of popularity
Chidubem Ezinne teenage girls are a strong market
Why did Vanilla Ice go diamond?
"Pops out of the instrumentation like...cold water" Such an awesome description of the vocals!
Man, I love your videos. Good to see your channel growing.
THUMBS UP!!
Not a fan of drake... but I like your video about drake.
Kanye explored that sound more in "MBDTF," which is, I think, more influential than 808s.
Mario Scotto I'd disagree just based on how influential 808s was on the new generation of rap like uzi
Thank you!
So Chris was really able to send it to you. It was from him that I learned about your channel. Both of you are amazing!
My favourite song on the album. Great video too, as always 👌
its been out for one minute for all we know its a terrible video
I watched it then commented? I can't time travel m8 if the video was shit I'd say so
Where do you get the animations brushes for the "ink" splotches and transitions you did in this video?
these videos are the highlight of my time on youtube
so well executed
Has it really been 5 years since Nerdwriter started?! Man, almost to 1million. Keep making great stuff and it'll come in no time at all!
Hey Chris, Congrats on the subscription count. I cant believe how much it has grown this year alone. keep up the good work.
this is thorough research keep it up
Nerdwriter1
Please do Chance the rapper!!
Or Tyler the creator's crazy sense of humor
A video about Childish Gambino and maybe his new album would be cool
The KaptinKristin video on him was really good if you haven't checked it out
The quality of your videos is absolutely amazing
Feel no ways had always reminded me of 808s and heartbreak
I scrolled the comments and some of yall lying, no way EVEEYONE hates drake when the man has the number one album of 2016...
Legendary video. Can never go wrong with Drake
@Nerdwriter1, Make a case study on EMINEM's legacy ! Have a great day everyone
Ismail Guerbab do you mean his song legacy or his actual legacy?
I mean his a study about his songs !
best editing ive ever seen on one of your videos! keep it up!
Dude, I f@cking love your videos god damn. Above all your film videos, the depth of analysis is incredible. Thanks.

One of my favorite songs ever.
This song still bumps just put it in high volume in your car otw to work and I promise it will become part of you
I always looks forward to your videos. You keep me intrigued even when I'm not familiar with the subject matter
i was waiting for a video today
Do more of these deconstruction please 🙏🏽
cold joint right there! very underrated song!
:( sad to see the coffee intro go, but i like the new one
I am surprised there was not more conversation about that.
This is more about Jordan Ullman's production than Drake
You finally do music and you do drake cmoooonnnn
the depth behind a single song and the way you've managed to convey it is actually fantastic, great
This video is insane. Very informative and well edited.
3:10 Dude, that's a block diagram, not the DX-7's parameter structure.
Why is this video so addictive
thought I was the only one who ducked with this song so much. was my summer anthem
The visual transitions on this video are so so great
i am so happy for you 900 subscribers! i hope people subscribe more now!! congratulations and as always, you have the most amazing content!
I would love to hear your impressions on Childish Gambino music/Donald's show Atlanta. Or more on Bon Iver would be amazing too.
there's no such thing as a fake artist
James Franco
there's no such thing as a fake artist
Nerthony Drantano, you seen this?
Such a refreshing optimistic video about the music industry. Thanks, Nerdwriter.
