The guys have nothing to prove. They had their time in the spotlight. Enjoy life, you deserve it. I have my memories. Such a fantastic band. Played a huge part in the soundtrack of my youth and I still crank them up!
As much as I would love to see the up to date Triumph concert... with no bells and whistles, just the real raw and rare diamonds shining as you are today... not from the past, I am happy to hear Rik saying that he is happy.. truly happy with his life and just doing the real life things like spending time with his family and grandchildren! What a blessing.. what a blessed life. Kudos Rik!!!
Rick's wisdom is spot on! He doesn't want to expend time and energy, only going half-way. If he can't go "the distance," he'll stay home with his family and do what he loves now!! SO SMART!! I'll ALWAYS LOVE "TRIUMPH!" Artists like RICK EMMETT, andd TRIUMPH are not only musicians... they're athletes as well.
Rik Emmett had so much talent in his heyday. He was always over looked. It's unfair that Triumph was continually compared to Rush. Two different bands with individual perspectives for songwriting. Definitely my favorite Canadian artists...
Dont forget every three piece band was compared to RUSH. Its just that TRIUMPH was Canadian and that made that all the more predominant for them. As TRIUMPH became a bit more complex with musical arrangments ( Sport of Kings ),they eventually added a 4th musician who was never mentioned as a member of TRIUMPH. Im a huge fan of both but RUSH was always my favourite of the two 👍
Man I love Triumph! This man is a legend! I love he’s being honest about not being able to perform as he did when young, we all get old and sometimes we just need to rest and take it easy! And if he’s happy where he’s at with his life right now! I respect him for that 🙏 this guy’s should have been inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame! I understand they’re in the Canada’s music hall of fame! Hopefully someday before us too late.🙏❤️🔥😎👍Enjoy your life with family Rik Emmett
Rick I absolutely loved your music when I was a young man. Now it is even better and you, Sir are a gem of a human and musician. Thank you for all of the time ou have invested into this business and all of the joy you have shared with us.
Growing up,I was a Grand Funk Railroad guy. Until I found Triumph And Queensryche. These are two phenominal groups and my goto anytme of the day. So relaxing to hear them over and over again. Love you,Rik!!!!
I was at the US Festival 1983 up near the stage and watched the entire Triumph set. It was a hot, crushing, living on the edge moment I will never forget.
Would love to hear more of your memories about that event. I saw them back in 1979 in Canada when I was 14. I was right up front against the barricade. It was life altering!
Wish I could have been there, I was 15 when it happened. The US Festival Triumph footage is incredibly mind blowing, it's almost obscene how really good they were!! I prefer to have good memories of Triumph as they were, it defines my teenage years.
Holy smokes this guy was loaded with talent back in the day. I was very fortunate to see Triumph twice growing up. They had a real positive influence on me for sure.
Jealous. I was too young in their heyday, and no one else I knew was into them. I had read about the size and scope of their shows in Hit Parader ("enough lights to light up Broadway", "enough pyro to start their own war", ...) and really wanted to see them firsthand.
Rick is such an outstanding person! He'll always be one of my all time guitar heroes. I hope to see more interviews and maybe some music in the future - I've purchased all of Rick's books and love his stories.
Saw Triumph in Buffalo, NY 1st time as they headlined. Then again for Just A Game. Then for Progressions Of Power. SUCH A POWERFUL BAND!!! Most respect to Rik, Gil and Mike. Rik played at my friends wedding. Great to see and hear him and about the other lads. Best wishes to them and their loved ones!
Originally from new brunswick. Thank you for having my guitar hero. I would like to meet mr. Emmett. Seen him in Fredericton many years ago and started playing guitar after that. Great interview
Wow Rick, you still look amazing and I have been a fan since 1983! Love the music and you too! God bless you and yours!! I hope your all healthy and fulfilled
Seen these guys in 86 Rosemont Horizon Junior year....most incredible musicians....they were the soundtrack of our time..still turn them to 11 even now...
It’s no different than the dreamers/fans who long for a Led Zeppelin, Styx, Yes or Genesis reunion. Of course there’s many other bands too, but these spring to mind. It’s not in the cards. Let’s just enjoy the material they recorded for posterity. There’s I’m sure tons of ways to do it as Rik states, but that’s not what suits him. We all have to respect him for his honesty and integrity. Thanks for the great interview John. You set the bar high for these interviews!
Love the transition to being a grandfather - Adds so much meaning to all the wonderful songs...long before you knew your life was going to be what it is now...such a wonderful transition.
Love the honesty of Rik. He and Triumph have blessed us amazingly. Glad they are doing what they enjoy. They have nothing to prove. They owe the fans nothing. I wouldn't want to go through the work and hassle of prepping and doing shows that don't really live up to what you want to present either.
As much as I would love the opportunity to see Triumph live, I respect his honestly. Most other musicians would dance around it. He says he can't hit the notes, it's a ton of work, and he's happy doing what he is doing now. Not a thing wrong with any of that.
For years I wished bands would reunite, but the older I get ( I am 63) I get where these guys are coming from. Rik hit the nail right smack on the head....
Classiest 40 yr old band interviews I've ever seen. More magic power to Rik and I'm assuming his band-mates for embracing the here and now and realizing that trying to recreate the Triumph that we discovered and loved in the 80's would be a desperate attempt to recreate the sound that they made in their 20's, HONESTLY, and he knows they can't, so to leave that alone and not force a reunion is a great tribute to the greatness of Triumph. Nothing against the bands that do squeeze every drop out for whatever reason, but I do find great respect for Rik and Triumph for continuing to ride gracefully into the sunset. Great work fellas!!
OMG ! I have a Framus acoustic/electric that I got as a present from my dad in the k lol ate 70’s. Now my daughter plays it. Can’t believe what it’s worth these days. Will never give it up.
Rick Emmett and Triumph were an eternal youth band for me. The exuberance of young freedom and the world that you have at your feet. The senses at their peak . The naivety and wonder and power. His voice and Triumphs wonderful backing vocals, song writing and musical ability. All first rate and extremely gifted. Seeing him here with the correct perspective on returning to that moment with Triumph decades ago. Yeah, Rick... good call. You have the world at your feet now. too. Happy for you, bro....... thanx!
Triumph was a wonderful part of my youth and I cut a lot of grass listening to them back in the day. Lol. I'm glad they made the choice to keep things in perspective and not go out just to make a quick buck.
Hey Rik, I remember seeing you in Ft Frances, Ontario, 1978 I think it was. The high school gymnasium I know for sure😁because I was there that day & will never forget. I came from International Falls, the U.S side. Oh, and was my first live concert ever too😊
Things change,,, more often things are not repeated later in life. We all know that. So,,, soak it up while you can people, and take a chance on yourself.
Love Rik and you have a good chemistry with him! I think his answer is about as honest as it gets. If he is happy with his life as it is and Gil is happy and Mike is happy. then it is not worth all the work it would take to try to produce and tour a show that would be satisfactory to them and all their fans. Unlike all the classic bands that still tour, they would be starting over since they don't have all the loyal crew and organization that bands like Iron Maiden, Kiss.Journey, Styx, REO, etc have had going for decades.
That’s too bad. Triumph was a great band. I think the fans would understand that age creates problems and to do a tour would mean utilizing different things that help bring back the band as it was, or as close as possible. Thank you for the interview, Rock History Music!
Rik one of the highlights of your kids and grandkids lives would be to see you reunite Triumph for 1 show in a large arena with great acoustics. Your millions of fans would love if you televised it.
So lucky I was able to see them live in Portland Oregon at their prime. Rik was unbelievable. The videos are out there. Hitting every vocal note, playing the double neck guitar and the 12 string parts with rhythm and lead. Just magic. However, I would take all that fluff today. I get it. Nothing like hearing the originals and Rik still plays at a high level and sings well enough. He is a class act. Sad to realize we can't bring back all those memories. Would love to see them play live again, even if it isn't at the extreme beauty it was in the day.
While a reunion show in the grand tradition is not possible I still imagine a stripped down acoustic set of these songs. Not for the bravado, but the heart and soul of the storytelling.
All things must pass… and it’s ok. Everyone get’s older.. if they’re lucky.. I’m content with my record collection and my memories.. (Just a Game is my fave from Triumph)
It was a moment in time. Getting older is an odd place to wake up in and it happens to everyone. Things that we were able to do even just a few years ago become a non-option. Accepting our current place in life and ability to do or not to do things is difficult.
Rik is right, there are some thing best left in the past. I have wonderful memories of Triumph, whether it was at the US Festival in my hometown, or when they came to San Bernardino when they didn't have to; I am grateful for the memories, but that's where they belong, in the past.
Rik sure seems like a nice guy. I saw at Day On The Green. July 30, 1983. That's probably the best show/day I've ever seen. They came on before Journey.
Rik Emmett seems like the type of guy that any guitar player , using their please and thank you's ... could talk him into adopting you ... at least for a summer!
Rik has always been a class act and is truly an underrated guitarist and vocalist. If you're lucky enough to find someone who can sing as well as him, I'll bet money they can't play the guitar like that. . .or vice versa.
Ricks great .. he tells it like it is Hey I'm personally 64 years old and I can barely get out of bed in the morning... Don't get me wrong the bands that are out there doing reunion tours I give them a lot of credit.. I really don't know how they do it but.. I understand why Rick wouldn't want to.. you want to hold up to the same old standard when you were in your twenties it's impossible..
I was looking forward to a Triumph reunion. But respect Rik and the guys for not wanting to do it. I was wondering if they ever plan on doing a box set like Toto did? Taking their first few albums and digitally remastering them
Still wish he would do a guitar project with Alex Lifeson. I know Alex was a guest before on Rik's album. But, a full project with the two of them would be cool. Both still have so much to offer I think.
Rik, what you described, is how it is, in rock and roll, for everyone. Casinos, halls, but, BUT, I contend, that if triumph, were to announce and market, a limited say, 6 city tour, and include rush, ( maybe), or journey with perry, and whoever you could get, and do a final tribute to arena rock, that you WOULD, sell out arenas, as much as these young jokes do now. And you would get good tickets prices, though not insane like these butter cups do, you guys could poll the public, get a feel. Such a tribute, from the much loved arena kings, would do awesome. Only you guys could do this.
Reunions some are just not meant to be I would not go to my school or high school reunion because looking back it was not really a happy experience. Reunited and it feels good is meant for some not all.
It's funny about these bands .Sure they move on !! Difference in the way the bands should go, I get it we're all getting older. But...we we're on that ride with you !! We're the reason your famous!!! We're getting older too!!! You gave us so much fun. Bands like you and Grand Funk RR should do some small tours. Egos aside we would appreciate it and I think you would as well . Thank you all for your music
It depends on how hard up for cash they get. Bands used to make their money on album sales and writing royalties. With sales of CDs down about 96% from what it was 20 years ago, touring is about the only way for older bands to make any money.
Sad there'll never be a reunion. I may have mentioned this before, but I've never seen triumph in concert... Although I did meet them at music store record signing back in the early 80's Always been a big fan and lover of their music...I know they get compared to Rush a lot, but to me they're just a bit more pop rock ..still can ROCK, don't get me wrong, just not as progressive as Rush...if that makes sense. Looking forward to the rest of it.
I saw them every tin be the came to Kansas city and let me tell you they sounded amazing and had the best light show of any band touring back in the day
Finally a singer saying I can't hit those high notes anymore. So honest.
Bon Jovi anyone ? LoL. Rik is a legend.
100% agreed
@@jameslasts Smh. You have to wonder does the band or people close to him say ‘dude..its painful to say but you don’t have it anymore’??
He still sounds pretty good.
Most all of the notes he sang were High …😋

Gotta love artists that don’t compromise their integrity and the music for the money. Not many out there.
Just curious, are you suggesting that Triumph was one of those bands?

They had their day and knew when to call it a day. Admirable. Too many old rockers performing to 50% of their capacity and charging $200 a ticket
I appreciate his point, very much respect towards the integrity of music.
Rik is one of the nicest guys in music. Always impressed by his demeanor and class.

@@davemehelas5053 Yes!! Big hair and spandex, super hot. Grunge hit and they became frumpy emo weirdos that looked like homeless guys. Not good.

Rik is the MOST underrated player in music!!!!!!! The whole FN BAND 4 that matter!!!!!!

By far one of the best live shows that I ever saw and it was supporting the first album. Incredible!
Rick is such an outstanding person! He'll always be one of my all time guitar heroes. I hope to see more interviews and maybe some music in the future - I've purchased all of Rick's books and love his stories.
