- Rik Emmett reminisces on his experience with Triumph at the iconic US Festival in 1983, where they performed alongside rock luminaries like Van Halen, Motley Crue, and Judas Priest. He reflects on feeling like an outlier but proving Triumph's prowess as a band with a stellar performance. Emmett also recounts witnessing a legendary show in England which led to him saying it was one of the best rock bands he had ever seen!

I was standing at the back at the US Festival, soaking it all in, when a guy strolled up next to me. He was wearing sun glasses with long hair tucked into his baseball cap and doing the same. I looked at him, he looked at me. I knew this man. I said "You're Rik Emmett, aren't you?". He said "Yeah". I said "Don't worry, I won't say anything". An hour later he was on stage with his band and they stole the show! Thank you sir for providing the soundtrack to the 80's for me.
Yes sir, Van Halen, Ozzy and Triumph are the best three bands on that poster, all other bands come in 2nd or 3rd.
@@guitarplayer4429 when Judas Priest showed up they were totally professional. those MFs just waltzed onto the stage and totally owned that stage. scorpions? pshaw! Van Halen? pshaw!
mother fucking Judas Priest totally owned that entire day. and probably it was just a day in the park for those rock veterans.
what
I was standing about 15 people back from the stage, getting drenched by the water cannons. It was awesome. Just turned 17 the week before was partying like crazy. Triumph was definitely the best band that day. That was a day I’ll never forget. I was one of 350,000+ enjoy the hell out of that day.
So?
@@jamesha175 please mr headbanger, this conversation is mostly about talent, and Judas Priest has none, I grew up in the 70’s and can only name one Priest song, no talent more like a one hit wonder with an Amatuer guitar player to boot, anybody can sing and play J. Priest, not the same can’t be said about Triumphs vocals, and Eddie’s guitar playing, we’re not talking favoritism we’re talking talent, you remind me of when I was twelve, Ace Frehley was the best guitar player on the planet,
LOL, I’ll take the comment below yours for his word because I already know.
I have a 1999 Ford truck with a cassette deck that still works. Triumph is loaded in it as we speak. Triumph still rules!
A leaguers
I'm a diehard Metal Head and I love Triumph. They definitely deserved to be on that bill
Triumph was a hard as van halen, Scorpions
Triumph had done softer melodic stuff, but they definitely had the heavy metal goods as well. They kicked ass at the US Festival, probably the highlight of the show.
They held thier own, and proved that day. That they did belong...Rock On Boys!
Rik is a fantastic guitarist / singer / songwriter. Whole package
and a nice guy too it appears
triple threat
I’ll tell ya something else - for years back in the ‘80s he authored a column in Guitar Player magazine that was aimed at newbie rock guitarists. It was informative, easy to understand and fun to read. I wish more big-name players made half the effort he did to reach novice pickers.
Yes and he knows a great guitarist when he sees one, love both Rik and Randy!!
Love Truimph! Ric Is Like A.Paul Rodgers! Freedy Mercury! R.I.P. Play Mutiple Instruments! And All Great Vocalists!
Rik, thanks for the Randy comment. You are total class!

Rik Emmett is, was, and will always be an excellent human being.
I love the hell out of him.
I’m sure the rhoads family would deeply appreciate that comment from the great ric emmet ! 👍
@ronnieparker4311, Randy Rhoads was long dead when the US Festival in 1983 happened. Rik Emmett did not see the Ozzy Band with Rhoads in it, it was Jake E Lee. not Rhoads.
Ric is talking about heavy metal holocaust in 1981 where ozzy with randy, Rudy , tommy was on the same bill as triumph! So yeah he did see him!
Great? Nah. Good. Mediocre. Okay. These better describe his playing ability
@@jimfromMaine Ok really awesome 🤘
@jimfromMaine in you very humble opinion of course. I agree with Ronnie, Rik is an awesome guitar player, can play many styles flawlessly and what a voice!
Very few musicians singers can even touch this guy. Truly an amazing talent.
there are a handful of guys in rock who could sing and play lead like him...
Meniketti...Kotzen...
@@Dave_Wight_The_Rock_Oracle Awesome musicians. I saw Kotzen live, and the guy is a better vocalist compared to some well-known singers.
Agreed, Emmett is incredibly talented. He even had a column in _Guitar Player_ magazine in which he covered music theory. And then I heard his live vocals, mindblowing!

i was there US Festival and Triumph was a freakin breath of fresh air amidst all of the heaviness of that day
Triumph is just as hard as those other bands except PRiest, who was the only actual metal band on the bill. Van Halen is hard rock, Quiet Riot..

So great to hear Rik discuss Randy, and delighted to see he and Triumph getting the kudos for being a great band
@eoinjames4018, Randy Rhoads was not performing at the US Festival in 1983 where Rik is talking about because Rhoads was already long dead. it was Ozzy with Jake E Lee not Rhoads. don't know if Rik is forgetting or....

And I also saw Ozzy and Randy, Rudy and Tommy back then. And they were great too!
But I'll never forget when I saw you in Triumph. And I waved to you, and you waved back!

I was at the US fest. And I went over the front barricade during Triumph's set. They kicked ass just as much as everyone else.
Rik is not just a great musician, he is an unsung hero of humanity !
Great to see Rik looking and sounding so well! Great memories of Triumph, a band that deserved to be remembered better!
I didn’t see the US Festival but was fortunate to have seen Triumph at the LA Forum in the 80’s. Hands down one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and I’ve been to a LOT of concerts.
they put a lot into their shows, Gil Moore had a big hand in designing the shows with lasers it was awesome
I saw triumph live three times, they were awesome all three times, I had all their albums. I love you Rik!

Triumph were amazing that day - really won the crowd over. Rik is being very modest here!
Triumph! I love them!!! 5 album run that rivals Any rock act! Thanks for the great music and interview
I think you're probably talking Just a Game through Thunder 7, and you're 100% right. (and no less so if you happen to like another 5 better)
Emmitt is right at the top of guitar players from the past till today. Incredible player. Never gets a mention but some of those players that always get in the top 20 couldn't tune this cats guitar. Legend, thanks Rik for all the music. Peace 😎 ✌️ from Canada, eh. Never surrender!
Still listen to Triumph, Great band.
Rik is on a whole other level when it comes to playing guitar and "Actually" singing. ☝
As a young teenager, I actually saw Ozzy the following night when they flew back to the states and played at the New Haven Colosseum in CT. and they did NOT have a good night. Def Leppard were on their A game on doing their High n Dry album and still to this day the best live rock performance I have seen. Blew Ozzy off the stage that night.
The great Randy Rhoads did shine on the 3 new DOM songs they performed. Flying High Again, Over the Mountain and Believer were the best of their night's show.
very few guys can sing and play lead like him, handful of guys. Of course he split the vocals with Gil, Triumph a very unique band.
August 2 , 1981 no chance Def Leppard blew Blizzard of Ozz off the stage unless you are referring to actual blow jobs. Blizzard of ozz with Randy a better band everyday even at their worst. Joe elliott has talked about this said they learned a lot just watching that band play. Def Leppard were not the musicians Blizzard of ozz were. I have seen many more people attest to the fact Def Leppard got crushed.
Just Rik Emmett being humbled as ever. He is by far one of my favorite artists. I was a huge Triumph fan and also a fan of Rick's solo material. If you have a chance to see him as a solo artist to highly recommend it.
I was one of the Lucky ones. I caught Randy with Ozzy in Detroit 1982 on the Diary Tour. That line up with Randy was the Complete and Total package of the 300 plus concerts I have attended. Randy was so Electric in his showmanship and playing that Everyone in attendance was hypnotized. The live solo spots of Randys on the Diary tour were a bit different than on the Official Tribute album. Longer and crescendo with full band instrumental finish. once in a Lifetime experience for sure. After seeing Triumph a few times as well I know for sure Rik was Impressed with Ozzy and that line up. Randy much like Rik was High Virtuoso and seamless melded styles, speed and tones like a Instrumental Wizard.
the Kalamazoo shot in February 1982, glad there is audio of that show and an alleged video.
Most people who saw Randy and that band play say it is without a doubt one of the best they have ever witnessed.
The Tribute album in retrospect blows, listening to the original show from Cleveland they did a disservice to Randy by editing his playing and the spotlight solo, the original is so much better and longer.
They added the band jam to the Diary tour. rik was not impressed with Ozzy...he loved the band. I think randy was a nod above Rik, he was more diverse and learned. Rik would even admit that. In the Sabbath Bloody sabbath book Randy is referred to as the reluctant Wizard
Man that is high praise!
Randy would've loved hearing that coming from such a legend!
no doubt, what an honor, especially from a guy who played on bills with AC/DC, van Halen, Scorpions, Gary Moore...Judas priest.
Rik also did a tribute to Randy after he passed away.
It 's funny seeing and hearing these great guitar players from hard rock bands, who are not really fans of metal, but they all laud Randy.
Triumph had the best mix of the day. Their sound was great at the Us Fest
even Carlos Cavazo said they were the best band of the day
I was there. An awesome day
It was brutal if you were not well prepared with fluid entertainment. My buddy and 3 chicks... It took a day to get in the venue for us.. stuck in traffic. then when I looked for parking - high centered my chevy luv 4x4.. the stream of people heading in swarmed my truck and pushed me off the cluster of bushes. Then once inside, we were so far back from the stage.. armageddon like for me... it's a blur it was hot and we stood there until after dark. no bueno ...
He's underestimating Triumph's popularity
I was lucky enough to see Triumph in 86 at the Richfield Coliseum near Cleveland Ohio, and what a show, one of the best I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot of the cool bands🤘🏻🤘🏻
Triumph was a big influence on my guitar learning. I can survive. Follow your heart. Never say never.
Triumph is such a great band. They are in my list of top ten favorite bands!
Some of Triumph's songs really meant a lot to me as a teenager - they were inspiring and hopeful. Rik Emmett seems like a truly wonderful man and you can see and feel that spirit of decency shining through all these years later. Thanks, Rik! You made a difference for a lot of us with your music.
Ozzy's 81 lineup was amazing. Underrated for some reason.
Because the lineup that they replaced was by far the best one Ozzy ever had. They recorded the first two amazing Ozzy solo albums (and wrote most of it as well). Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake were better musicians imo. BUT unfortunately Sharon wanted her buddy Tommy Aldridge in the band.
Well because everyone wishes the band who wrote and recorded the albums got to play live and continue but Sharon screwed that, but the next iteration was amazing too
@@gl3605 correct the band that wrote and recorded the albums is second to none.... Not ozzy solo albums, we call them Blizzard of Ozz albums to align with reality.
No, Tommy was Don Arden's choice...and Tommy had the integrity to refuse to re-record the drums on Diary of a Madman.
@@Dave_Wight_The_Rock_Oracle it's the thing that if you were there you can't really explain it to the un-initiated...

Triumph...my first concert in my life. I was 17 years old in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the Riverside Theatre. It changed me forever. 3 guys...what you can do together. I learned to play guitar and especially the melody within playing guitar.

Thunder seven I feel is somewhere on the top 100 greatest albums of all time!!!
It has a chance...not much filler.
Diary of a Madman is one of the top 1 greatest albums of all time
Rick, you SHREDDED at the U.S. Festival! I know, I was there UP FRONT for your set. And 40 years later, I actually saw footage of your set where I could see myself in the crowd! Thunder 7!!!
they were better than van Halen based on the footage.
@@Dave_Wight_The_Rock_Oracle Agreed. I saw the whole thing. David Lee Roth came out between sets with a half empty Half Gallon of J.D. Hammered! In the VH set, Dave F'd up _multiple times_ saying, "I forgot the damn words, man! Hahaha!" Eddie laughed - on stage... Rest in power, Randy - you made a Canadian say a sort-of cuss word.
Exactly what I thought too 😂
I enjoyed that Rik said he could take or leave OZzy......I think a lot of people feel that way, the band was amazing though
I have always enjoyed Rick's musicianship, teaching, and positive attitude. Such a gentleman, and a credit to Canada. Thanks Rik!
Great to give Randy some credit. He's getting some unfavorable comments anymore cause it's been so long. People don't realize just how incredible he was and writing abilities. He never got to peak and do what he wanted to do. He was fitting into Ozzy and played what he wanted him to play.
Whenever people ask me what the greatest concert I've ever attended, I always say "Metal Day" at the '83 US Festival. But I also mention that Triumph totally held their own that day. I was already a fan, but I think Triumph left San Bernardino with a lot more new fans that day too. Mad respect to Rik and the boys for stepping up on that historic day and daring to be different. And then knocking it out of the park!
I was there with 4 other friends , but shortly before Triumph went in stage , me and one friend managed to squeeze our way center , front stage to for Triumph because it was the only band at the US Festival that I'd hadn't seen live. It was a packed crowd , but worth it. I still freeze frame footage to find myself in the mess of fans, to no avail.
Triumph was such an under-rated band, they had so much talent and not very many people got into that band. Was a shame.
Loved Triumph. Still do. Rick is a stellar guitarist. They were so accessible in TO in the 70s.
I loved Triumph for what they are…every song was identically written about pulling yourself up by the bootstraps.
a very positive band the magic power of the music
Cool what a great video. Absolutely kicked ass. Rick took words right. out of my mouth.

Wow! I’ve loved Triumph since I was a kid and saw them with Ozzy in Kalamazoo at the American Rock Festival. Amazing!! I wish Randy played that show…
unfortunately that show had Jake E lee, who was a great guitarist in his own right, but we are talking about Randy Rhoads now.
Thanks Rik. Randy inspired me to pick up guitar. I think you are an amazing talent as well. Glad to hear a compliment like this since it sort of tells me that you "get it" when it comes to Randy. I even wrote an instrumental about the plane crash. Thank you for coming to San Antonio in 2007 after we had won the NBA Finals. I tried to take your photo from the first row with a disposable camera when you played at Retama Park as a solo act. You looked at me like "Don't you dare." The photos came out all blurry since anything over 5 feet away just gets too far away for that type of camera. Nowadays it's no big deal. I hope you and Triumph put together something like a farewell album even if you don't tour it. Your music inspires and believe it or not there are way too many bands that project a negative theme nowadays.
you and millions of others I do not think people truly understand Randy's influence 4 decades later people still coming around to his genius as they realize how he recorded and wrote stuff. George Lynch giving a nod to those first two albums as stuff you can take a deep dive into and learn a lot.
Gotta say, Rik is a lifer; guitar nerd to the core. And he’s a super open, transparent and honest musician. Fierce? Yes. Diplomatic. Indeed.
Take off,eh?🇨🇦

Rik is a very humble man & a very good guitarist. Yes Triumph was stylistically different than a lot of the hair metal bands on that bill that day. Talent wise they totally belonged. I seen his band live in the 80’s & they totally delivered.
Well heck, since somebody likes my comment, allow me to elaborate. It was in Syracuse while I was attending Oswego State University & the venue was the old War Memorial. Then again later either at the Nassau Coliseum or MSG and Yngwie Malmsteen warmed up for Triumph. I remember enjoying Yngwie for a while then I realized while he was a gifted player didn’t have the songs & played at too high a level constantly without giving the audience a chance to come down to appreciate his artistry. He didn’t have the songs under his belt, didn’t pace himself &/or the audience’s exhilaration. You have to know how long you can & exactly when to unleash the fury. The audience can only take so much. It is great being a virtuoso but you need songs to showcase it. Also when & try not over do it. Like Kirk Hammett once said, always have your audience craving for more!
Was lucky enough to see Randy Rhodes play with Ozzy and he was stunning.
i grew up with these guys i new mike lavigne rick and a solo album with a friend of mine sil samone theses guys were awesome and very under rated
I was at the US festival for the first two days, Saturday and Sunday. Crazy hot that weekend. Incredible memories. Ticket cost was 20 bucks for each day. I still have the ticket stub pinned to a corkboard in my kitchen.
Way before the internet I heard an anecdote about the first time Rik Emmett went to check out Bruce Cockburn live to see first hand what Cockburn did with an acoustic guitar or what if anything he had on stage to create his sound. I think it was even Rik himself telling the story because it was self deprecating and a testament to Cockburn's talent. The person he invited to go with him may have been Kim Mitchell. It was another Canadian rock guitarist he is friends with, I remember that. I would love to find a recounting of that.
rik is the music man. best guitarist of all time and in top five singers
I witnessed them progress from a high school act to small arena to big concert act from 75-79 when the polish was evident and were in high demand internationally by 84 when they were regarded in England as a top 5 world band.

He was good live but not the best I've seen especially live.
I saw Triumph at the Circle Theater Indianapolis back in the 80s. 5.00 got you a ticket. Very short list of people with his talent. The whole band was great.

Very entertaining video; all the best to Rik and VRP Rocks.
Lay It On the Line was played on every radio station in NY back in the day. Triumph was definitely not over looked.
A league band wish they did a proper farewell tour
This is an underappreciated festival. That lineup across all three days was really solid. Seems like the logistical planning and execution was quite good as well...Sound is pretty good on these old clips, which I think this is video, not film, and if it sounds that good here it must have sounded pretty good live...
Timber Ridge Festival near Kalamazoo was great. Ratt, Accept, Night Ranger, Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Ozzy and Triumph back in '84. I-94 traffic was bumper to bumper for many hours. The place was packed.

everybody that saw the Rhoads/Sarzo/Aldridge line up were just blown away with how great they were "LIVE". Don Airey, no rookie player, when he came to the US to join the Diary Tour in Dec 1981, said he was actually "afraid" when he heard them rehearsing for the first time. Fast Eddie Clark, guitarist for Motorhead on the Blizzard tour, would finish with their set, then hed come and sit backstage and watch Randy and Ozzy..he said hed just shake his head and say "fukin eh" about Randy.
