Triumph...my first concert in my life. I was 17 years old in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the Riverside Theatre. It changed me forever. 3 guys...what you can do together. I learned to play guitar and especially the melody within playing guitar.
Because the lineup that they replaced was by far the best one Ozzy ever had. They recorded the first two amazing Ozzy solo albums (and wrote most of it as well). Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake were better musicians imo. BUT unfortunately Sharon wanted her buddy Tommy Aldridge in the band.

I completely agree. I’ve posted on other videos that the greatest concert I ever saw live was Def Leppard opening for Ozzie with that lineup in Fort Lauderdale Florida at the sunrise music theater 9/11/81.. That was Def Leppard, high and dry tour and they kicked ass. I remember after they played saying to my buddies, and my girlfriend, Ozzie’s in trouble! This band, who we didn’t even know who they were absolutely crushed it. We went to the bar and we were hyped up from Def Leppard had a couple cocktails went back in, and it was no contest. As good as Def Leppard were, and they were raw Ozzy .. Slade the night. I think Randy had like a 18 minute solo which was the sickest thing I’ve ever seen at that time. It’s nice to be validated by somebody as talented as Rik because I’ve been preaching how awesome that concert was. Appreciate the video dude keep up the good work .. Cheers 🍻
Late seventies and the eighties were my main concert years. Triumph has always been at the top of favorite bands to see live. At 65, Triumph is still my favorite.
❤ Triumph ,Rush,Max Webster, ruled the gta for years loved them. Triumph was the only band my sister let me get my nephews to listen to during her born again days.❤
Rik , thanks for all the memories from the late 70's and early 80's . When i saw your band , I thought , well this is not Rush , but they sure are damn good .
ABSOLUTELY Love Rock Emmett ! Should be in rock hall of fame . He's one of the best ,Un recognized Guitarist . Got some respected credit in the 80's . But he offered the rock world ,some the best playing and song's ever. I ❤Love Triumph.
I was there with 4 other friends , but shortly before Triumph went in stage , me and one friend managed to squeeze our way center , front stage to for Triumph because it was the only band at the US Festival that I'd hadn't seen live. It was a packed crowd , but worth it. I still freeze frame footage to find myself in the mess of fans, to no avail.
Thanks Rik. Randy inspired me to pick up guitar. I think you are an amazing talent as well. Glad to hear a compliment like this since it sort of tells me that you "get it" when it comes to Randy. I even wrote an instrumental about the plane crash. Thank you for coming to San Antonio in 2007 after we had won the NBA Finals. I tried to take your photo from the first row with a disposable camera when you played at Retama Park as a solo act. You looked at me like "Don't you dare." The photos came out all blurry since anything over 5 feet away just gets too far away for that type of camera. Nowadays it's no big deal. I hope you and Triumph put together something like a farewell album even if you don't tour it. Your music inspires and believe it or not there are way too many bands that project a negative theme nowadays.
you and millions of others I do not think people truly understand Randy's influence 4 decades later people still coming around to his genius as they realize how he recorded and wrote stuff. George Lynch giving a nod to those first two albums as stuff you can take a deep dive into and learn a lot.
Gotta say, Rik is a lifer; guitar nerd to the core. And he’s a super open, transparent and honest musician. Fierce? Yes. Diplomatic. Indeed. Take off,eh?🇨🇦
I was at the US festival for the first two days, Saturday and Sunday. Crazy hot that weekend. Incredible memories. Ticket cost was 20 bucks for each day. I still have the ticket stub pinned to a corkboard in my kitchen.
Man, those were good times back in the 80's. Its so nice to think back and get very vivid images of memories from back then. If you had told me we would be dealing with the nonsense that society has turned in to...I wouldve said you were crazy
Whenever people ask me what the greatest concert I've ever attended, I always say "Metal Day" at the '83 US Festival. But I also mention that Triumph totally held their own that day. I was already a fan, but I think Triumph left San Bernardino with a lot more new fans that day too. Mad respect to Rik and the boys for stepping up on that historic day and daring to be different. And then knocking it out of the park!
I was at the Heavy Metal Holocaust gig in Stoke on Trent and Rick is right, Randy was absolutely amazing. Better than any guitarist, Live, I've ever seen 🤘
there is limited footage of that show but there is Randy playing the solo in I Don't Know...seemed he saved his best for the biggest stages like Day on the Green and a couple of other festivals. A lot of people who have seen Randy live say he is the best they have ever seen, listening ot those bootlegs.....you can tell why they say that
Way before the internet I heard an anecdote about the first time Rik Emmett went to check out Bruce Cockburn live to see first hand what Cockburn did with an acoustic guitar or what if anything he had on stage to create his sound. I think it was even Rik himself telling the story because it was self deprecating and a testament to Cockburn's talent. The person he invited to go with him may have been Kim Mitchell. It was another Canadian rock guitarist he is friends with, I remember that. I would love to find a recounting of that.
I love how at 3:19 he’s about to say Ozzy’s band kicked butt, and then decided to go all-in and says “ass” instead. Rest in power, Randy - you made a Canadian say a sort-of cuss word.
Rudy Sarzo earned that recognition. I don't know why he doesn't get mentioned more often. Oh yeah, I was at the concert when Yingwie opened for you. Good show. Always been a fan of Fight the Good Fight.
he will tell you he got a lot better playing with Randy who also played bass and could show him things. Tommy Aldridge said Randy would sing drum riffs to him on suggestions
Timber Ridge Festival near Kalamazoo was great. Ratt, Accept, Night Ranger, Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Ozzy and Triumph back in '84. I-94 traffic was bumper to bumper for many hours. The place was packed.
I witnessed them progress from a high school act to small arena to big concert act from 75-79 when the polish was evident and were in high demand internationally by 84 when they were regarded in England as a top 5 world band.
I saw Triumph at the Circle Theater Indianapolis back in the 80s. 5.00 got you a ticket. Very short list of people with his talent. The whole band was great.
I saw Triumph in 1982 at Miami’s Gusman Hall and again in 1983 at the US Festival. They were a very solid band. Very few people can sing OR play like Rik Emmett. He does BOTH!
Triumph rocked back in the day. I had the blessing of seeing them live one for the books and also seeing Ozzy with that same line up he is right Randy , Rudy and Tommy rocked the house even Ozxy was on that night. def Leppard opened for Ozzy that night what a Show Randy was amazing he blew my mind. your legacy lives on RIP ! 🙏
This is an underappreciated festival. That lineup across all three days was really solid. Seems like the logistical planning and execution was quite good as well...Sound is pretty good on these old clips, which I think this is video, not film, and if it sounds that good here it must have sounded pretty good live...
There was so much synergy in that iteration of Blizzard of Ozz with Randy and Rudy having played together for years and Tommy just being a monster on the kit. Rik makes a great point here that they were an amazing band, regardless of the Ozz Factor.
that band was so good, Ozzy's off key vocals did not matter, the band sounded that good, listen to the live bootleg of the tribute album, the unedited version is so much better, Randy was incredible that day as was the band. Ozzy making mistakes whcih the band turned into gold moments
Rik is a very humble man & a very good guitarist. Yes Triumph was stylistically different than a lot of the hair metal bands on that bill that day. Talent wise they totally belonged. I seen his band live in the 80’s & they totally delivered.
Well heck, since somebody likes my comment, allow me to elaborate. It was in Syracuse while I was attending Oswego State University & the venue was the old War Memorial. Then again later either at the Nassau Coliseum or MSG and Yngwie Malmsteen warmed up for Triumph. I remember enjoying Yngwie for a while then I realized while he was a gifted player didn’t have the songs & played at too high a level constantly without giving the audience a chance to come down to appreciate his artistry. He didn’t have the songs under his belt, didn’t pace himself &/or the audience’s exhilaration. You have to know how long you can & exactly when to unleash the fury. The audience can only take so much. It is great being a virtuoso but you need songs to showcase it. Also when & try not over do it. Like Kirk Hammett once said, always have your audience craving for more!
I'm a diehard Metal Head and I love Triumph. They definitely deserved to be on that bill

Joe elliott has talked about this said they learned a lot just watching that band play. Def Leppard were not the musicians Blizzard of ozz were. I have seen many more people attest to the fact Def Leppard got crushed.
Triumph is such a great band. They are in my list of top ten favorite bands!
It’s truly great to hear some of these comments after all of these years enjoying rock. Thanks Rick
Triumph was one of my favorites back in the 80’s. I always enjoyed their music.
A leaguers
Triumph...my first concert in my life. I was 17 years old in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the Riverside Theatre. It changed me forever. 3 guys...what you can do together. I learned to play guitar and especially the melody within playing guitar.
I've watched the video over and over and Triumph was amazing. ❤
Triumph are A leaguers. love his call of Blizzard of ozz
Triumph had the best mix of the day. Their sound was great at the Us Fest
even Carlos Cavazo said they were the best band of the day
Triumph was a big influence on my guitar learning. I can survive. Follow your heart. Never say never.
That was cool thanks for sharing
Rick is one of the greatest, humble, nice and talented.
Ozzy's 81 lineup was amazing. Underrated for some reason.
Well because everyone wishes the band who wrote and recorded the albums got to play live and continue but Sharon screwed that, but the next iteration was amazing too
@@gl3605 correct the band that wrote and recorded the albums is second to none.... Not ozzy solo albums, we call them Blizzard of Ozz albums to align with reality.
No, Tommy was Don Arden's choice...and Tommy had the integrity to refuse to re-record the drums on Diary of a Madman.
@@Dave_Wight_The_Rock_Oracle it's the thing that if you were there you can't really explain it to the un-initiated...
@@gl3605Tommy Aldridge was better than kerslake anyday.
Rick, you SHREDDED at the U.S. Festival! I know, I was there UP FRONT for your set. And 40 years later, I actually saw footage of your set where I could see myself in the crowd! Thunder 7!!!
they were better than van Halen based on the footage.
@@Dave_Wight_The_Rock_Oracle Agreed. I saw the whole thing. David Lee Roth came out between sets with a half empty Half Gallon of J.D. Hammered! In the VH set, Dave F'd up _multiple times_ saying, "I forgot the damn words, man! Hahaha!" Eddie laughed - on stage... When their set was over, backstage, Eddie was PISSED at Dave for "ruining" their biggest gig ever to that point - over 300K ppl. Multiple interviews later confirm the backstage story. 👍✌️
@@mrinnopadnah8316 it is amusing the brothers confronted Roth...now, they were not exactly sober but not fall down drunk like Roth.. unprofessional
@@Dave_Wight_The_Rock_Oracle Agree totally. A ton of ppl were there, wonder if an amount of it was "liquid courage?" Either way, unprofessional 👍
@@mrinnopadnah8316 if i am paying to see a show, I do not want to be cheated because the band could not control themselves with excess, I do not how "rock star" that might be. Did Triumph ever cheat an audience., or RUSH....or Randy Rhoads....
Rik Emmet has an AMAZING voice and he's often (unfairly) overlooked when talking about the singing greats. DAMN, Rik could belt out those high notes!
Cheers 🍻
Everyone was flown by helicopter! Rick is a legend (in his own mind)!
I have always enjoyed Rick's musicianship, teaching, and positive attitude. Such a gentleman, and a credit to Canada. Thanks Rik!
Saw them in Johnson City Freedom Hall March 79. Dammmm good
Late seventies and the eighties were my main concert years. Triumph has always been at the top of favorite bands to see live. At 65, Triumph is still my favorite.
❤ Triumph ,Rush,Max Webster, ruled the gta for years loved them. Triumph was the only band my sister let me get my nephews to listen to during her born again days.❤
I alway thought Boston and Triumph were similar. I saw Triumph live. They filmed a live video at the show I was at. So amazing
The band that absolutely kicked butt in the 80s when I saw them (eventually three times) was Triumph and I saw a lot of rock bands.
Man I can't say enough good things about Triumph you were always in my cassette player 😂
A leaguers
Rik Emmett you’re a Legend!🙏❤️ I love Triumph! I still have a few of his albums! In “cassette”
I have all the Triumph albums but never had a chance to see them live.Huge fan!
Thunder seven I feel is somewhere on the top 100 greatest albums of all time!!!
It has a chance...not much filler.
Diary of a Madman is one of the top 1 greatest albums of all time
I was there with 4 other friends , but shortly before Triumph went in stage , me and one friend managed to squeeze our way center , front stage to for Triumph because it was the only band at the US Festival that I'd hadn't seen live. It was a packed crowd , but worth it. I still freeze frame footage to find myself in the mess of fans, to no avail.
Cool what a great video. Absolutely kicked ass. Rick took words right. out of my mouth.
Was lucky enough to see Randy Rhodes play with Ozzy and he was stunning.
Still one of my favorite bands! Rik Emmett had a huge influence on my playing...💚🎸
Awesome!
Wow! I’ve loved Triumph since I was a kid and saw them with Ozzy in Kalamazoo at the American Rock Festival. Amazing!! I wish Randy played that show…
unfortunately that show had Jake E lee, who was a great guitarist in his own right, but we are talking about Randy Rhoads now.
Gotta say, Rik is a lifer; guitar nerd to the core. And he’s a super open, transparent and honest musician. Fierce? Yes. Diplomatic. Indeed.
Take off,eh?🇨🇦
Im Canadian and was at US83, you guys were great, Scorpions also, and I'm a VAN HALEN fan so all good.
Rik Emmett is a once in a generation talent.
I was at the US festival for the first two days, Saturday and Sunday. Crazy hot that weekend. Incredible memories. Ticket cost was 20 bucks for each day. I still have the ticket stub pinned to a corkboard in my kitchen.
Very entertaining video; all the best to Rik and VRP Rocks.
I love how Rik is so clean he checks himself before saying, "ass." Fantastic songwriter and lyricist.
Man, those were good times back in the 80's. Its so nice to think back and get very vivid images of memories from back then. If you had told me we would be dealing with the nonsense that society has turned in to...I wouldve said you were crazy
Rics, great. Triumph was clearly an incredible group of guys - lots if talent.
I loved Triumph for what they are…every song was identically written about pulling yourself up by the bootstraps.
a very positive band the magic power of the music
I'm 60 now and if I could re live any day in my life it would be the day of the US festival what a line up
Whenever people ask me what the greatest concert I've ever attended, I always say "Metal Day" at the '83 US Festival.
A lot of people who have seen Randy live say he is the best they have ever seen, listening ot those bootlegs.....you can tell why they say that
He was good live but not the best I've seen especially live.
i grew up with these guys i new mike lavigne rick and a solo album with a friend of mine sil samone theses guys were awesome and very under rated
Loved Triumph. Still do. Rick is a stellar guitarist. They were so accessible in TO in the 70s.
Great band!
Always there, rocking to the top!
I grew up in the hood where Rik lived and used to watch him play squash..helluva nice guy!!!
I love how at 3:19 he’s about to say Ozzy’s band kicked butt, and then decided to go all-in and says “ass” instead.
Rest in power, Randy - you made a Canadian say a sort-of cuss word.
Exactly what I thought too 😂
I enjoyed that Rik said he could take or leave OZzy......I think a lot of people feel that way, the band was amazing though
The guitar solo Rick did at US was pretty awesome.
a lot of people think Triumph won the day
I witnessed them progress from a high school act to small arena to big concert act from 75-79 when the polish was evident and were in high demand internationally by 84 when they were regarded in England as a top 5 world band.
I saw Triumph at the Circle Theater Indianapolis back in the 80s. 5.00 got you a ticket. Very short list of people with his talent. The whole band was great.
Agreed Triumph was fantastic at the US Festival. Judas Priest were also great.
I love how Rik said Randy Rhoads and Rudy Sarzo kicked ass !! I agree 💯
anyone who has seen that band would agree, I never got to see them but I listen to those bootlegs....and they are incredible
Randy Rhoads is my favorite guitarist. I love Triumph, saw them in 83 and they kicked absolute ass.
he is an all time A leaguer, as we get closer to Tuesday
@@Dave_Wight_The_Rock_Oraclei remember the day. I was 15 and i was devestated
@@mikebarker7626 I cannot imagine knowing of him at the time of his death, I was not into the music yet.
rik is the music man. best guitarist of all time and in top five singers
I saw Triumph in 1982 at Miami’s Gusman Hall and again in 1983 at the US Festival. They were a very solid band. Very few people can sing OR play like Rik Emmett. He does BOTH!
there are handful of lead players who can sing and Rik is one of them
Unbelieveably talented!
Triumph was such an under-rated band, they had so much talent and not very many people got into that band. Was a shame.
I just heard the earlier album that the drummer sang. Wow!
Ozzy making mistakes whcih the band turned into gold moments
best music person of all time.... just the best
Rik is SOOOOOO talented!!!!!!
