  • On this retro showcase Dan takes a closer look at the rare double telescoping lightsaber Luke Skywalker from 1977s vintage Star Wars line.
    While not as rare as a double telescoping lightsaber Darth Vader or a rocket firing Boba Fett, this Luke Skywalker is still rare and a pretty cool piece of history.

      The problem isn't with repros / reissues in of themselves. It's the fact that knock offs are being passed off as the real thing (i.e. fake labels that say 1978, etc). If they'd have honest labeling on the figure (i.e. 2018 Hasbro or ToyHobby 2005) then you'd now which is the real thing. Hasbro does reissues of their classic Transformers to this day (complete with retro packaging), but both the box and figure clearly indicate that they're modern reissues.

    After I saw Star Wars in 1977, I was asked to participate in a survey about how a felt about potential Star Wars toys. The prototypes were Darth Vader, R2-D2 and this version of Luke Skywalker. My 9 year old mine was blown. These were amazing. On top of that, they gave me a “whooping “ $5 for my time. Maybe the best day of my life.

    Saying no to repos is only maintaining the value of rare complete expensive collections. Some people want to finish off their collection without paying £10,000 for a vinyl cape. There is a place for limiting repos like guitars and watches where it genuinely infringes on a trademark but not a plastic minature toy gun with an intrinsic value of 0.0001p. A lot of my collection is original but it's too late to stop the rush of fake stormtrooper blasters.

      How about repros that have blue sabers instead of yellow? Get it cheaper, make it better, get it faster, make it stronger, all is solved, it's a homer, debate's done, it's f***ing over.

    • @kamthenerd3696
      @kamthenerd3696 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I say yes to repros also, because I don't understand why you need to pay way more than you should have over a toy. Some people want to play with repro toys without messing up the old ones. Some kids actually want to live those moments that their parents had.

    As far as the Death Star goes, the plan was to look like an ordinary old stormtrooper, lay low while Ben deactivated the tractor beam, and then boogie out of there. When they went out to rescue Leia, it was already bad enough that Luke was a little short for a stormtrooper -- he didn't need a lightsaber dangling from his belt to call more attention to himself. And there really wasn't anywhere else he could put it that would allow for easy access.

    I would remove Luke's saber and use the hilt as a blaster. Even had the barrel of an old GI Joe (12") rifle I cut off to insert in the hole. Worked great even without that. Definitely intended for play scenarios beyond the movie. Now why it was yellow is a whole other ball of wax... Err.. Plastic. No. Wax.

      ..I guess they just wanted to differentiate it from Obi-Wan's blue lightsaber. (They weren't too worried about movie accuracy back them.) I used to put an extra blue one in there when I was a kid. Also, after the Empire figures came out, I discovered that the Bespin Luke lightsaber (which was a full, seperate saber) would fit perfectly in that hole of the original Luke. So I painted one of those blue. When I was older, Toy originality was more important, and I just put the yellow sliding one back in.

    • @jumpinjimflash
      @jumpinjimflash 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So Luke's Bespin Lightsaber being yellow was just continuity for Kenner? I gotta get to the bottom of this...

    • @SecretGalaxyTV
      @SecretGalaxyTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Hjälte Björkdahl I do own it, yes. I did not catch the toy hunter auction on FB. I liked his show well enough for the toy pr0n. Didn't think HE was particularly charismatic. Some of the "finds" were very clearly planted, but I knew I was watching a tv show when I tuned in.

    •  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Toy Galaxy Sums up the show well enough I think.
      Yeah, he auctioned off three Lukes around $1200 each, after buying them on the show for $150-£$200 each. Once the mob asked why he was selling them, he announced all had been sold, mentioned his show with a (now broken) link and deleted his post. I might find some blog post about it if I Google around but it was well weird.

    • @SecretGalaxyTV
      @SecretGalaxyTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Hjälte Björkdahl I won't fault the guy for running a successful business built on toys. I know the community tends to frown on that type of stuff, but at the same time, every single one of them would trade places with him in a second. His on-camera persona just wasn't particularly engaging for me.

    •  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Toy Galaxy I hear ya, but that particular auction was so weird, right?
      If you look up his website, the pricing isn't all that bad, there are even some cheap stuff on there. Especially if you live in the US.
      EU scum like me get hit with extra shipping costs (as is the name of the game) but if I make a trip over the pond, I'll make sure to buy some stuff and ship it to some friend over there in advance. :D

    Those original lightsabres were rubbish. I removed them as soon as I opened the figures - it looked like a coloured car aerial, rather than a lethal weapon. I replaced them with sections of fluorescent plastic fishing floats, which could be sanded down to a rounded point, and fitted perfectly in the arm slots of the three figures. And the colours were correct. Luke and Ben, blue, Vader red, and what's more, they shone brightly under blacklight.

    "Just say Nos to Repros".

    • @RansomeStoddard
      @RansomeStoddard 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have mixed feeling on repros. On the one hand, i like them. As a collector, I have over 4,000 loose figures and providing them all with vintage weapons would lead to my divorce. Also, repros give the buying public a cheaper alternative to original weapons, so it helps keep the price of real weapons from going even more crazy than it already has (check the price of a black Endor Blaster). So as a collector, I like that. But on the down side, they are now making repros that float and look almost identical to the real thing. This allows for sellers to "accidentally" pass off fakes as real and the buyer can get screwed. So I guess my real problem isn't with the repros, but with fraud and uneducated sellers. But since I can't eliminate those from the market place, I have to hate repros in general. Uggg.

      I got a bag of repro weapons for my Star wars figures and I compared them to the original weapons and they are like night and day. First off they feel cheap and fragile compared to the originals. You would have to be blind as a bat to not notice the difference.
