Sailing to South Africa | NO EASY WAY OUT Ep.120

  • Notoriously difficult for OFFSHORE SAILING, the Mozambique channel presents a challenge. When Strong winds blow against strong currents the sea state can become dangerous. We have to pick our weather window very carefully and if we get it wrong there are very few options to bail out. We are sailing between the closed borders of Madagascar and the potentially hostile borders of Mozambique with ISIS insurgency in the north and corrupt officials further south. We need to get this right.
We have been sailing around the world for over 5 years after setting off from England in 2016 on board our 37ft sail boat Florence. Join us as we share the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, Sailing offshore across the Oceans and exploring remote locations with our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean and off the grid.

I love the fact that you are a sailing channel spiced with a bit of local color, instead of being a travel log about local color with a bit of sailing as an afterthought. Well done Matt and Amy!!

Same, I'm here for the sailing and boat life. Sir David Attenborough has shown me the landscape. It never fails to amaze me when Florence is at sea, that wee boat in the biggest oceans in the world, she's a beauty all right, no doubt.

New subscriber. I was waiting and seeing, but now I'm loving the longer scenes that allow the eyes and the mind to take in the beauty. We can't all be out there, and part of the joy of watching sailing videos is experiencing long views to the horizon or longer moments of the rail in the water... whatever! Please don't ever think your viewers need chopped up videos of gorgeous scenes coming at them like a strobe light. You don't experience the ocean that way, and neither do we want to.

    • @dancarter482

You are by far the best technically balanced sailing and cruising channel. You explain the decisions that lie ahead and the reasons for your eventual choices, big and small. The footage is of excellent quality too. You are the "real cruisers". Power to you guys.

Your new camera gear is certainly paying off, the quality and colours seem far more vivid and a joy to watch. This is the 3rd time I have sat and taken in all the experience and instruction on sailing provided by you both taking turns as presenters. I really like how the whole presentation is taken on by both with equal skill and quality and zest for your lifestyle.

Thank you Matt and Amy for another superb episode - about sailing. I'm getting so excited about the journey to my country, South Africa and to see the footage. Such a complex beautiful place. I remember once travelling the far back roads of Mozambique in 2007. Pitched my tent on top of a sand dune overlooking the bluest Indian ocean. A yacht ghosted by from north to south, a white triangle against the blue. It could have been you fifteen years later. That night, as I sat around my little fire, the skies were ablaze with stars. Despite its troubles, Mozambique is a magical place. You guys are awesome too.

I found out about you guys after I read a book called 'An Island to Oneself' written by a chap called Tom Neale. Of course, you will probably know that this is a man who lived for many years by himself on an island called Suwarrow in the South Pacific. I was so captivated by his story I went to TH-cam and searched "Suwarrow Island". Your video was the first that came up. I was then so captivated by your story that lead me here! You guys are incredible at what you do. You have so much resilience, you must be so homesick at times yet you don't fly home, you keep going and delivering these amazing videos. Please don't return to 'normal life' when you get home! Keep going if you can!

You are my favorite sailing channel. The TH-cam algorithm usually points me to channels that deal more with fixing boats or other dramas. My fantasy was to sail around the world also. But sold my Boat. You tell the story of actually sailing. I love all your discussion on sail trim and sail selection and weather strategy. You really deserve 1,000,000 subscribers.

You probably hear this a lot, but the clarity and resolution of the improved cameras, and your photography and video skills are really impressive. Having watched your videos from nearly the beginning, the difference is amazing. I like to think I don't *need* polished, artistic video to enjoy a story, it really does make it enjoyable. I so often think, over and over, ah, there's a beautiful shot. One other thing too -- the camera shots over-the-side really show Florence's beautiful lines. That's a well-designed boat.

Really Florence is a beauty; not too long, not too broad. It fits for two sailors: Matt and Amy.
Some shots of moon at night are fantastic; then magnificient sunrises and sunsets. Your limproved camera is worth its price.
Thank you for making me to open maps to study were you are. Geography is my hobby. Certainly, the best way to study it is to accompany you during your journey around the world.
My feelings are that you were fighting with making this video. Final result is really good. Two more weeks to wait and watch a new video. It hurts, but believe me I respect you decision about frequency of realising a new video.
    Safe journey, Matt and Amy!

Awesome videos... Awesome experience...!!! We have a Fogo Island in Newfoundland. I didn't expect a Fogo Island in Mozambique...

I'm always impressed with how you always wear your life vests or tie off when your under sail. I watch so many sailing channals that the people refuse to wear thier life vests or won't tie off ,and it's so dangerous to have this additude that I can't enjoy watching them moving around the boat knowing what will happen if they slip or get hit with a wave that knocks them into the water. Have you ever thought about dragging a safety line behind you that you could get a hold of if you ever ended up in the water.

Towing a line behind would be a lot of drag and slow us down. Better to concentrate on not falling off the boat in the first place.
