I believe the thumbs was her communicating with her grandma (who was filming) to get feedback. Her grandma has been very important for her both on a personal and professional level. BTW, Angelina was scrolling and reading lyrics from her phone while singing. At the end she said "Det var kjempebra!" which means "That was very good!".
I loved your introduction. Many reactors know nothing of the songs she covers and I appreciate those who take the time.
The first single of her new album will be released later this month and the whole album in early autumn. Then she starts touring in the USA and Europe etc. She finishes her high school this summer and Republic Records will start to promote her with their full capacity globally 😁 The whole world will know her soon ❤!!!

Not yet teenager, but 11 years old. The joy in her thumbs up moments is a celebration with her mentor and closest friend, grandma Mery Zamani, who filmed the video.

I see everyone says that her grandmother is filming, but she is not behind the camera when she applaud the performance. I guess it is her mother.
I would guess that Mery handed the phone off to Mom so she could film her “approbation” to Angelina. That thumbs up gesture shows up on many of her early videos… those with Grandma behind the lens. I am of the opinion that many of these thumbs up moments are in response to her Grandma giving Angelina encouragement with a similar gesture. Angelina has said of her Grandma (who, incidentally introduced Angelina to jazz at around the age of 2 or 3)… she is very “inspiring”, she’s my “best friend”, my “everything.”
Angelina’s mom says that Angelina gets her creativity and talent from her Grandma. Mery no doubt, helped Angelina with her wreath upon her head. I’m pretty sure it was created as you said, for her practice sessions, both here in the studio, and for her practice with the entire orchestra. 💚🎶👣

Great reaction she is 11yrs here Billie was Angelina's favourite artist and she said there would be no Angelina without Billie. There is a version on her album Magic released when she was 12yrs. This performance by Angelina is my 2nd favourite vocal by anyone ever the 1st being ' My funny valentine' by Angelina at 16yrs and will only be better when she sings them again. Now of course her voice is even more unique, soulful, rich ,husky, raspy, jazzy, bluesy, breathy, smooth, velvet, powerful , subtle , delicate ,intricate and pretty much anything she want's it to do, for me there has never been another like her so natural, real and honest , so calm and poised even since she was tiny and the joy and love that pours out of this magical , sweet, humble, caring young lady is a beautiful and wonderful thing to experience. She is much loved because she is love.
I'm not certain, but I have the It's Magic album and I believe this is from the session that produced that album. Each of her performances are unique and this version sounds extremely close to that on the album. At the end of the video, you will also note that she is in studio with a full orchestra as she would have been for the album session.
@@michaelsoper3610 About half of the take we are watching her record here was indeed used "as-is" on the album (by which I mean that very little post-processing was done to her vocal, and what was used wasn't chopped up into little bits, as is often done with multiple studio takes, but instead was used in only two unedited segments: one relatively short and one much longer). You can verify this if you can sync up the two recordings sufficiently well (and balance their vastly different volumes). I did that once so _perfectly_ from the beginning of the song that when the two audios suddently snapped into sync I thought that maybe the cell phone video had stopped playing.😁 (It hadn't.)

You mentioned one take, Angelina is known for doing most of her songs in just one take.
It is this performance that you can hear on the Magic album. The difference is that on the album there are a professional sound track and not the cellphone, and at the video with the professional sound track, at 3:44 in this video, they took out the little miss and overlaid the video with a commercial for the Magic album.
@@olekristiandahlen603 To be more precise, only about half of this take was used on the album (It's Magic). The first half, before the flubbed line, was not used, nor were two lines in the second half. But the rest of the second half was used as-is on the album. Also, since this isn't really obvious from the video, I'll point out that the band is actually playing "live" in the adjacent room(s). Some of the musicians can be seen when the camera pans around.

With all the gimmicks that are used in what is known as music today it is so refreshing to come across a being that does not need auto tune, lightshows, dancers, outrageous costumes, bands, or orchestras to cover their weaknesses because she has none. AJ can perform a Capella, or with one or two instruments to follow her lead and give you chills with each performance. I have always enjoyed all genres of music, and being 75, I have experienced the best the industry has to offer, from the early 50s, to 2023, but I have never been moved emotionally in the past anywhere close to what Angelina Jordan does from 7 to 17. When I heard Celine Dion perform in a tint in Québec when she was a child, I predicted she would be the next world superstar, and the rest is history. Celine did not sign a record contract until she was in her early 20s. David Foster, who made Celine a star flew to Norway after Angelina wone NGT and tried to sign her, but her family wanted to stay in control of her future. Angelina, at 13, appeared on AGT and getting worldwide recognition signed with the largest record company in the world at age 14, Republic Records. The story is that Monty Lipman, the CEO, and known as the Star Maker, personally signed her even without meeting AJ, he was shown a video of her performance. Angelina Jordan will be the next Super Nova very soon. As for being her biggest fan, e pluribus u-num.

How is this possible? Channeling in and out of childhood. Everyday, I listen to Angelina everyday to sooth my soul.
I feel that the thumbs up she gave a number of times was to get her grandmother's approval, like, "Hey grandma, this sound good?" Of course, grandma Mery gave her back a thumbs up! She's very close to her grandma it's such a beautiful relationship. The flower crown is something that is based in Norwegian tradition to celebrate Midsummer. Midsummer, an observation of the longest day of the year, is celebrated in each of the Scandinavian countries. Originally a pagan holiday, Midsummer is celebrated on the day of John the Baptist and is now held on the weekend closest to the summer solstice. Midsummer celebrations feature traditions that anyone can incorporate. One of the most popular is creating a flower crown to wear! These wreaths represent rebirth and fertility and are worn by everyone, regardless of age or gender identity. They are traditionally made using whichever plants and branches you can find - but the options are endless. Because of the crowns and the iconic maypole, Swedish Midsommar has become one of the most well known solstice traditions around the world.

Just FYI, you can’t always go by the date of a video to determine Angelina’s age. The dates are just posting dates. Angelina was actually only 11 in this video which would make the recording year 2017.

I think the hair piece is a tribute to Billy Holiday. Billy wore similar style hair pieces quite often.

Actually, this is not teenage Angelina. She's 11 I think, or just turned 12. In the studio she is well known for performing her songs in one take. One of the Republic Records producers compared her to Sam Smith and Beyonce', both who are known for delivering a finished product in one take. I think this translates well to Angelina's remarkable live performances. She is just pure Perfection. Seeing the silly fun loving side of her is also refreshing. This is one of my favourite Angelina videos, it is so beautiful and truly shows her immense class. I loved the film " Lady Sings the Blues " with Diana Ross playing Billie Holiday, and she is definitely in the same league vocally as the two singers mentioned above !!! Love reaction as well.
She is more than a musical or skilled technical singer. The moment she starts to use her vocal cords to sing a line from a song the switch to the adequate emotion turns on. She can't help it! It's her nature. Simply beautiful! I love her melancholic performances the best (as with Billie Holiday), but she can do it all!
The finalised version appeared on her debut album 'It's Magic', which she recorded in 2017 (when she was 11) and released in 2018. Somebody has dubbed the album version onto the rehearsal video you just watched, which would have been cool for you to experience second time around if only you had known, but this is the one I personally like for its rawness.

I LOVE your Angelina reactions...and the fact you did a bit of "homework" listening to the original by "Lady Day" (one of the many catch titles she's earned). You comments were truly educated, you had a point of reference when you listened.. this rendition, I think, impacted you a tad more than her take of "I Have Nothing" (which STILL makes me smile HUGE!). Yes, Angelina recorded this in 2017 for the album "It's Magic" with the Military band of Norway "Forsvarets Stabsmusikkorps". It is available for purchase and yes it is extraordinary!
Angelina has said in an interview, that if not for the unconditional love she experienced when listening to Billie Holiday when she first got interested in music, that there would be no Angelina Jordan today. She also said that music found her, not the other way around, which is very interesting.
Angelina and Mery listened to all versions of a song before they decided how Angelina would do her version. That is how she has become such a great historian of music and learned so much so quick.
Well, you hit my special word for the day: "channeling." And, you got there straight away. If you had to reduce all your comments to a single word, channeling would be it. You also avoided a common vocal coach trap of picking apart the anatomy of the singer's vocal track. Sound production matters, of course. But, it has its place. Technically, Billie Holiday was, pretty much, untrained. Yet, she was still beloved. Her lack of technical training led to damage of her instrument. She adapted and continued to performed and was still loved, maybe even more. Between her and Ella, you have the very definition of jazz singer. The emphasis that you put on styling, interpretation, and musicality is very well placed. Technique expands ones tool set, no doubt, and is important for vocal health. In the final analysis it is still all about moving the listener emotionally. You always seem to get Angelina in a way that emphasizes what this girl delivers every time she steps up to a microphone. Well done.

Angelina I think said: 'there would be no Angelina without Billie Holiday'. Like Mozart, Angelina only needs to listen to a melody once to repeat it or even improve it according to her tastes. But let's talk about geniuses that are born once in a lifetime.
Angelina said that if it wasn’t for her love of listening to Billie Holiday there would be no Angelina Jordan. It was Angelina’s grandma, Mery’s love of listening to the jazz classics and artists that, from birth, Angelina heard the classics and thus developed a deep love and passion for jazz.
Great analysis. That Angelina can even come close to capturing Billie Holiday's vocal style let alone nailing it is remarkable. Being able to perform this song in Holiday's style is like defending your PhD. for a scientist. If you can pass that test there isn't much you can't do. And Billie Holiday had a lifetime of heartbreak behind her voice. It's amazing.
She was 11 years old here. The normal flower crown in Scandinavia is to honor Summer and eternal love, here Angelina wore the autumn equivalent, I suspect her grandma made her do it. Grandma Mery is a famous painter and poetess from Iran.

and this is a perfect illustration of that. when it comes to Angelina singing
heartfelt ballads, the 'breathy', 'whisper-like' inflections she brings forth are
all pure Billie Holiday, for no one until Angelina has eve been able to capture
the true essence of Billie. In this rendition she is more than mesmerizing,
as she just transport the listener to somewhere only Billie used to take us to.
AJ was, I believe, 11 here, a mere(?) preteen. This song appears on her album, It's Magic, available on Amazon and elsewhere. There is also a version of this studio video on TH-cam with the final mix dubbed on top, like the difference between a rough and cut diamond, both priceless but one is shiny.
My take on the thumbs up is AJ saying "nailed that" ... you will see Mery give a thumbs up at the end so it is the two interacting during the recording.

The hair thing is part of the Norwegian May festival..an old tradition. She was interlacing her song by making gestures to her grandmother who she has often said is her inspiration....her grandmother is an internationally recognized artist...and i believe her grandmother introduced her to jazz and those early classics..... incredible talent, so authentic....the real deal...thank you for this wonderful presentation and reaction.

I’ve seen Celine live in Las Vegas. The lady can sing! To compare “singers” of today with their computer generated perfection and internet availability to those of the past is criminal. Angelina isn't even a teenager here, since the album, "It's Magic" was recorded on Nov 2017 when she was 11 yo. It was released 7 months later when she was 12. The album is available on all streaming services. Her multi-Grammy winning producers, Stargate Productions, have worked with about 30 of some of the biggest names in the business. They said they only know of 3 singers that can walk into a studio, sing a song top to bottom, all the way through in 1 take & be done. They are Beyoncé, Sam Smith & Angelina Jordan. You would be amazed at some of the artists they've worked with that didn't make that short list. As far a news goes, she is releasing a new single at the end of this month (April 2023) from her upcoming album scheduled to be released this fall. She said it has a 60's feel to it. I can't wait!!!

It looks as though she just has the lyrics on her phone. I don't see sheet music. Her understanding of the music is mind boggling. She knows the spirit and emotion of the song. I like to praise her musical intellect, her knowledge and the reverence she has for the music.
She takes off her shoes when performing or recording, so I guess that's sort of the switch for her. While she often has flowers in her hair, she doesn't have that in all of her performances.

This song is on her album magic, that you can listen to on spotify, she said in a interview that if there was no Billie Holiday there would be no Angelina, so yes there is a big connection. Angelina works with the LA-based Norwegian company Stargate Productions. There is a video of the CEO commenting he has three 'one take' artists in his "stable", Beyonce, Sam Smith and Angelina Jordan.
In her youth AJ kept herself busy between studio takes by weaving flowers or leaves into her hair. Producers kept a collection of small weave-able items near the mixing board.

No one has described, the Barefoot Angel, Angelina's jazz genre singing style better than her most favorite musical idol Billie Holiday, as BH described her own style of music documented in the book “Lady Sings the Blues”:
“Ralph [Cooper] convinced [Frank] Schiffman to come and catch me.

That isn't true. Occasionally wearing a flower circlet around the head isn't all that uncommon for small girls during summer, but the extravagant flower decorations Angelina sometimes use is very uncommon. Sweden has more tradition for using flowers for Midsummer Eve including a flower pole (old phallus symbol) and flower circlets, and Angelina's father is from Sweden, so maybe that's where she has got it from. Here in Norway we are more about burning witches (or just big bonfire nowadays of course) for Midsummer Eve.

Angelina is a force (in the good way, that is). What a voice. You asked if there is a live version Angelina has done. Well I found two and it is impressive to hear the development in Angelina's voice between the two: first: she did this song in the second round of Norway Got Talent 2014. Angelina had just turned 8 years of age and she had to do it á capella. I have understand this was an extra round in NGT to eliminate a few extra candidates, because there were too many left for the semi finals. Indeed. Someone synced the studio version with this video perfectly, and it's unreal. Not sure how much post production is in it, but certainly the microphone would be a massive difference alone on top of that, compared to a cell phone video. It's remarkably moving and just better. Hearing the music better, hearing what the mic hears, unreal. But what's real awesome is seeing both of them. 😊
