Brings back memories this pub when I first started drinking in Nottingham in the mid seventies when pubs was pubs without the extortion price of food these days in most pubs
Hello Lee, it's simple, if it has a crust it is a pie. Homemade meat and potato pie in Manchester just has a crust. We had it most weeks, mum even made a smaller one in a galvanised bowl for my dad to heat up at work. Red cabbage, a must on the side.
Yes it has to be enveloped in crust top + sides + bottom otherwise it's only a casserole if the crust only covers the top the brown gravy looks awesome
Hi Lee, a couple of years ago we had a meal at the Trent navigation inn in Nottingham, the steak pie was properly old school! As in it was cooked in one of the big rectangle trays and cut into squares when served. Worth a try!
Pieminister Nottingham is now called Long Row Social, still owned by Pieminister just a new concept cafe/bar/restaurant. I believe the pies with just a lid are called Pot Pies in the USA.
I remember mum taking us kids to see the christmas pantomime at the Theatre Royal, I was always bored to tears by it but we did get tub of ice cream out of it so it was'nt all bad!! Don't know when you worked at the Evening Post but I remember going in the doors to the long counter where you could dictate classified adverts to be placed in the paper, must have been the late seventies early eighties, long before the internet and email. If there was a big production on at the Theatre Royal you would regularly see famous faces in Langtry's. And all long before the Royal Concert Hall was built. I grew up in Nottingham and used to know it like the back of my hand but since moving away, and with all the re-development it's become a strange city to me now. I still have family in Nottingham so still visit but its different every time these days.
Langtrees has changed a bit. I used to frequent that on the occasional Friday, back in the day, possible around the same era as yourself. Normally it would have been the Fellows after work. I left Nottm, well South Notts (Rushcliffe) actually quite a few years ago, My wife and I go back every 2/3 years for a stay. I do miss it quite a bit.
My mum used to make what she called canteen pastry, ie a round or square pastry on a baking sheet then cut it up and place on top of a portion of stewed meat or fruit.
Pieminister are generally classed as a pretty decent maker of Pies... Not top tier home made Pies... But usually pretty good Pies overall... They're typically priced at roughly £3.50 to £4.00 in-store from a supermarket... The Creamy Buttery Mash & Mushy Peas looked pretty decent too... But that Gravy looked absolutely divine mate... Rich & thick with a really dark Beefy looking colour to it... I would give this a great score of... 9.5/10... Many thanks for the video Lee... All the best... Cheers mate. 🍺
One of my local pubs in Swindon was one of the first to introduce Pieminister pies when they first started. They started in Bristol but originally they were from Nottingham but moved to Bristol to start making pies and opened their first pie shop. I really like their pies. Buy them now and again. I buy the chicken & mushroom for £4 from the deli. For me they are a 10 as I have eaten them.
Cheers for doing this video on my recommendation. The next time I'm down in Nottingham from Scotland, its the first place I'm going to to get another one of these. Totally blew me away! I agree with some other comments, doesn't look the best, but my word, it's a tasty pie. Of course, I would mark it a 10 all day long.
Hiding the mash, what there was, under the onions. But beef gravy on a chicken pie. As Father Dougal from Father Ted would say, "I thought you were havin a laugh" 🤣
There used to be cafe near us called the pike house inside it was like the one from last of the sumer win. The old lady who ran it made all the pies and cakes herself the steak pie was to die for .the place is saddly missed.
Looks lovely that I know it’s very far from you but if you are ever in Wales, the Highwaymann in Rhoose the pie there has won awards absolutely incredible
Hi Lee. For today's pie, ...... it looked a bit messy for me . However it tasted good. As long as you enjoyed it 👍. If Ever your in Port Talbot , try the local Pies from Ron Evans Co. Been going for years & years.. When ever local boy Sir Anthony Hopkins is in town ...... Apparently that's his first port of call. Great Vid . 👍
Mister Macmaster what a delicious looking pie 🥧 😋 certainly looks the business..good to hear The Blonde angel 😇 will be back on the vlogs, again soon 😊😊
Looks a wee bit strange never seen a pie with all the toppings, pie itself looks delicious and the filling looks great they certainly haven’t skimped on the filling. I with you Lee nice thick gravy especially on a delicious pie with mash and peas I’d give it 9.5.👍🏴
Yes, it to has have top, bottom, and sides to qualify as a pie. If you went into a shop and asked for a pork pie, you would not expect it to be served up in a bowl with a pastry lid, "Daft I call it" 😜
Looks like a Free Ranger my favourite after a Saturday afternoon drinking in the pubs at Canning Circus in Nottingham and walking down to the microbars towards maid Marion way
I dont mind if the pie is in an oval dish with a pie lid on top but not if its just a pool of gravy and meat on a plate with a pie lid sitting on it, ideally though should have sides and a bottom though!
😊😊😊WOW looks very nice on looks maybe a 9/10.😊😊😊😊 Yes I also put gravy on everything growing up in New England we eat a lot of Sunday Suppers and gravy is very important.😊😊😊😊😊
I just ordered, from an Irish pub, for my dinner in New Jersey, French onion soup, shepherd's pie, and a salad. No shepherds were harmed in the placing of this order or of this TH-cam comment.
Not been to Nottingham since before the pandemic! Must put that right soon! And that Nottingham City Transport Leyland Atlantean in the photo of your old workplace!.....sorry, bus enthusiast coming out, there!
I saw that video where you ate the Desparate Dan's PIE. Some of your viewers are crazy. Of course that was a pie. The waitresses referred to it as a pie. They didn't seem to have problem with it. That pie looked great and it looked as though you were having a great time with it. So when all is said and done I guess we'll have to give it a 9.6.
You say you were eating mud in the old days.our dear mum would go to the butcher's and ask for some free pork bones for the dog..that ended up our our plate with a onion runny gravy.see we lived posh too😂😂 the bones not the dog on the plate😂😂
I went up Nottingham City Centre some weeks ago, not been for years...Its a dump now Im afraid. Barber shops and Cafes, Nail Bars...A mere shadow of its former self in the 70s...Decades of Labour Councillors have ruined Nottingham ..Pie looked okay to me. The business rate is why its so expensive Im guessing....🤔😳🙄🇬🇧
Brings back memories this pub when I first started drinking in Nottingham in the mid seventies when pubs was pubs without the extortion price of food these days in most pubs
I agree a pie is not a pie unless it is totally encased in pastry. Love pies, my favourite meal😊
Very nice looking pie, that ! What I wouldn’t give for a good old scallop pie from home, too.

I worked at Langtrys years ago . loved it there.
We mainly did baked potatoes with great fillings in those days .
I am happy to see you are back to normal mate after your recent heart scare. Keep up the great work. Love it all.
Yes it has to be enveloped in crust top + sides + bottom otherwise it's only a casserole if the crust only covers the top the brown gravy looks awesome
That's the best looking gravy I've seen for years.
Looks like a good solid meal 😊

We called them pot pies in County Durham when I was growing up in the 50s and 60s too.

When they ask you if you want one of these, do you respond "Yes, Pie Minister"?

Gravy, it's like opal fruits "made to make your mouth water". Great vlog ❤
Thanks for the upload, really enjoyed it😊 I guessed you were going to say 9.2 before you scored it 😂

That looks absolutely beautiful 👌🏻
Lee I give it a big Fat 9… Looked amazing… and I love pie n mash swimming in Lovely 👍👍
Did you bring your own table and knackercracker ! 😊
Definitely needs sides and a base to be a real pie in my opinion. That pie looks fab, wish I lived nearer.
Hiding the mash, what there was, under the onions. But beef gravy on a chicken pie. As Father Dougal from Father Ted would say, "I thought you were havin a laugh" 🤣
I think Fungi Chicken is a play on Funky Chicken. Surprised you missed that given your love of nostalgia, Lee! 😂
The goodies…a goody goody yum yum!!😅
I've been to the branch of PieMinister in Manchester in Northern Quarter - always decent and staff are great !
Looks great Lee. Just for your info, Pieminister still have a restaurant in Nottingham, it's on Long Row opposite Nando's.
That looks delicious❤i think ill travel up there just to try it👌👍
A good looking plate for a well dressed pie! ..cos'Eyes also eat"👌
Looks so tasty.😋😛
Some supermarkets sell Pieminister. Their 'Heidi, goats' cheese, sweet potato & spinach pie.' is delicious 10/10 and I'm not veggie.❤️
When I make my pie which is meat and potato I do not put sides on it I do it like my mum did it .😊that pie you just had I would give it a 10.xx
The pastry looked a bit undercooked, Was it doughy to eat, or was the pastry crispy.
Iam from the North east England, a pie with no bottom or sides is called a pie crust ,
There used to be cafe near us called the pike house inside it was like the one from last of the sumer win.
The old lady who ran it made all the pies and cakes herself the steak pie was to die for .the place is saddly missed.
Looked great Lee and i love thick gravy and that looked brilliant loved the pouring top man my score is a good 9
Pie minister has a production factory on Bristol and has pie shop restaurant in Stokes Croft Bristol.Good reviews.

It all looks lush , beautiful combo 😋
I miss living in Nottingham and I remember having venison pie during Christmas time!
Try the pies in the old trip to Jerusalem under the nottingham castle .
Looks lovely that I know it’s very far from you but if you are ever in Wales, the Highwaymann in Rhoose the pie there has won awards absolutely incredible

The MotherShip pie picture was perfection. 👏🏻👏🏻
Mister Macmaster what a delicious looking pie 🥧 😋 certainly looks the business..good to hear The Blonde angel 😇 will be back on the vlogs, again soon 😊😊
Wow Lee, that pie looks devine, it definitely deserves to take a closer look at it.
Pieminister pies are now sold in Tesco and Sainsbury’s, sell at £4-70, no idea if they are the same as sold in pubs.
Looks a wee bit strange never seen a pie with all the toppings, pie itself looks delicious and the filling looks great they certainly haven’t skimped on the filling. I with you Lee nice thick gravy especially on a delicious pie with mash and peas I’d give it 9.5.👍🏴

Sitting at that table in the street, I thought I was watching Rate my Takeaway! 😂
That would be called a Tiger pie in Sydney. Yum yum.
I dont mind if the pie is in an oval dish with a pie lid on top but not if its just a pool of gravy and meat on a plate with a pie lid sitting on it, ideally though should have sides and a bottom though!
That look really nice, you can never have enough gravy in my opinion, so I always like the extra gravy jug to have the option as you are going along 😋
To me a pie is a filling encased in pastery. It was first thought of way back as a way to perserve the meat.
It looked good plenty of chicken gravy looked thick well presented bit pricey but suppose ok for a treat
Lovely pie that mate. Bit expensive but good quality. 9/10 for me👌👌
The bike trip video was amazing and I enjoyed every part. Never mind the cost it's all about the memories.
😊😊😊WOW looks very nice on looks maybe a 9/10.😊😊😊😊 Yes I also put gravy on everything growing up in New England we eat a lot of Sunday Suppers and gravy is very important.😊😊😊😊😊
Yes, a proper pie. That hits the spot.
Is that a tin plate it's served on. Ifit
That looks well cushty, I don’t like Stilton either, bit too strong for me, but in a pie/pasty it has a different taste altogether.
Suggestion, maybe have a rating 1-10 on food, and then have another rating on price. That way price want effect the rating on food.
looks very nice great review 👍
Looked tasty... yea, 9.2 is good. And yes, it had a base and was a pie not a topper :) I would enjoy iy for sure.
Love your videos Lee keep up the good work
8.7 looked really good 👍
Moo & Blue or Free Ranger for me please and thank you! Looks amazing.
You can take the pie Lee, I ll take the lass out for dinner 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅

Good video lee stay safe mate 👍
i love pieministers gravy ,i buy it in the cartons use it alot ,
In Scotland the butcher's would make steak pies for new year and most only have a top not all around
That looks pie-tastic salivating watching this.
They,re right a proper pie has got to have a base and sides, otherwise it is just a crusted casserole.
You could have laid bricks with that gravy. 😊

Looked great but the price is outrageous. Pubs need to stop ripping people off or they just wont have customers
nice selection of pies some supermarkets sell them
It's what I would call a dressed pie, looks very tasty enjoy
Presentation no it looked a bit messy but the inside looked nice 8.
