How To Get More Peppers, Pepper Experiment | PNW Zone 8b

  • When I plant peppers, I can’t help thinking about summer salsas. My favorite pepper is the Serrano though I love ever pepper and they all have different uses. In the PNW, it is tricky to have a great pepper harvest.
    This video has been a year in the making when I thought my peppers last year were dying so I planted them closer together. Then I heard from another farmer that she intentionally transplants two pepper plants right next to each other where I would normally plant one- all other spacing staying the same. So, this year I am going all in to try it for myself in the greenhouse. I love the idea of multi sowing and growing double the pepper plants in the same garden space- which is always a premium. I will make follow up videos to show how it worked out.
    Thank you for watching and happy pepper transplanting. Happy gardening!!

    The way I had it explained to me was that pepper plants want to ‘hold hands’. Lol, I’ve never forgotten it.

      Ah, that is an excellent way to remember that and now I won’t forget it either. Thank you and thank you for watching.

    I'm southwest of Portland and I have not had much luck with Peppers either. I planted mine pretty close together this year because they never seem to get very big, but this gives me hope! Thanks for sharing!

      Yay for bigger pepper plants. It sounds so counterintuitive because most plants need to be spaced and now I am learning of more and more gardeners who have had luck with closer plantings of peppers.

    Im in The very SW corner of Arkansas. I usually plant my peppers 2ft apart in a single row and they never do well. This year i planted 2 rows with the rows 1 ft apart and the pepper plants also one foot apart and offset from the other row so if you stand and look at the row from front i can see all the plants if that make sense. So far its just May 21st and i have more peppers on the plants than i have ever had, and i harvested a big basket this morning. Its amazing. (Zone 7B/8A)

      Yay for more peppers. It is interesting because you would think that closer spacing would be detrimental but I guess pepper plants are clingy. 😂

    This is my first year gardening. Your videos have been so helpful!! How did this experiment work out for you? Are you planning to double plant your peppers again this year?

    • @littlerootsranch
      @littlerootsranch  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had my best peppers last year with that experiment and I plan to do it again. I found it easier to weed, less of a need for trellis and I had a ton of peppers. I didn’t notice any negatives. Two thumbs up.

    Which pepper species grow better in zone 8b?

    • @littlerootsranch
      @littlerootsranch  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I find shishitos grow well or anything that says early or smaller peppers. If you are looking for a bell pepper (harder to grow to size) look for a longer thinner 3 lobed sweet pepper. I recommend growing them in a greenhouse or under cover to keep them warmer for best results.

    Gary Pilarchik plants like that and says they like it also I did an experiment last year pinched some didn't with others I really didn't see much difference in production but the pinched ones were shorter more stocky and stable and produced later I prefer my bell peppers to turn red orange or yellow instead of green with a shorter growing season like we will probably have this year I won't be pinching this year same with Jalapenos

      Ah, thanks for sharing about your experience last year. Peppers seem to always be a struggle up here. I will see pepper plants from other areas and they are like a tree.

      @@littlerootsranch yeah I know that kind of makes me jealous I wish we could do that here there are advantages here though we can grow our heirloom indeterminate tomatoes in the late September sometimes October if it's dry enough and we don't get blight
