Tenko's family members died the way they treated him all this time. His loyal dog gave him comfort. His sister Hana tried to be supportive unless things tensed up resulting in her turning her back on him. His mother Nao was always there when her son needed him. His father Kotaro abused him. And his grandparents just stood by as passive observers.
I think what makes this more tragic is if his quirk would’ve activated at least five minutes later then he would’ve heard his entire family apologize and try to do better.
It's heartbreaking to see his mom still reach out to save him even as she's dying and Shigaraki looking back and trying to rationalize these memories and believing that he may have wanted to hurt his whole family like he did.
The part that hurts most for me is Tenko's mom still reaching out to hug him even as Tenko is completely destroying everything around him. Shigaraki's backstory is one of the most tragic one's I've ever seen, just goes to show you how quickly things can fall apart sometimes (quite literally in this case).

one thing i wanna say, his quirk making something a bloody mess actually isnt new, his quirk just makes stuff fall apart, not turn them into dust. the whole dust thing is actually censorship from the anime. if you read the manga its MUCH more brutal

In almost every anime, we constantly see the heroes leveling up and their power growing; we see the whole class improve all the time, so why not the villains too? Having them train and develop their powers more is fantastic because if they didn't power up, there's no way they'd stand a chance. But its so rare for shows to include a villain powering up arc, its almost always "the villain was hiding more power the entire time and chooses to power up mid fight just because"
Horikoshi has said that he's always wanted to go darker with MHA, even as far back as the training camp arc. And this episode/arc is basically the culmination of that desire. The anime typically does a form of censorship with Shigaraki's quirk. Back in S1, we saw that he decayed Aizawa's elbow until he reached muscle. But every instance after, it was less of a breakdown and more of turning to stone and crumbling. This episode still had a bit of the stone aspect but it also captured the horror of the manga by still showing the chunks. I think it's really tragic how things turned out. Nana knew that AFO was likely going to take her out. So she hid her son away in an attempt to keep her family safe. But because she vanished without a trace and very little explanation, Kotaro didn't understand. Not to mention, he was a child. So he grew up with that regret and sadness until it eventually became hate. But instead of dealing with his emotions, he bottled it up and took it out on his children. In the manga, we actually see him hit Tenko so hard that he physically falls over. And then he hits him again. So, bit of anime Censorship. Tenko wanted to be a hero. But his dad rejected him, and his family didn't exactly help. They just told him not to cry. And when they finally did step up, it was too late. The house was destroyed, family and all. He says the itch went away. We see Tenko itch after this incident however. So I wonder if the itch is his quirk quite literally begging him to destroy something he doesn't like. Or if it's more of an anxiety thing. Where he starts itching whenever he's uncomfortable. Either way, Nana's attempt to protect her family from AFO actually ended up pushing them right into his hands. The act of good ended up creating the successor to the Ultimate Evil.
I’m pretty sure the reason he started itching again is because he forgot the whole incident so the itching acted as a reminder to destroy something but he wasn’t sure what it was so it reached a point were he just wanted to destroy everything. Cause to a child their world is practically just their family their home and maybe a couple of teachers and friends, so when he destroyed that it was as if he destroyed the world. But as an adult your world view is much larger that’s why Shigaraki now wants to destroy everything (that’s my perspective of it at least)

The only person who’s quirk evolved was Toga’s. She can now use the quirk of the person she loves, if she drinks their blood. Twice and Shigaraki’s full power was just suppressed. But over the years and fighting Gigantomachia, has increased their out put and stamina. Now with out those mental blocks they can both unleash incredible power. I will say Shigaraki not needing 5 fingers might be an evolution. As a kid he used his whole hand and his decay spread. But now against the MLA we see him use at most 2 fingers and his feet. And he has some control over where it spreads, notice his shoe didn’t complete decay at first.
No wonder Shigaraki is the way he is. The amount of abuse he went through even before *that* day would be enough to scar him for the rest of his life, but him accidentally killing his whole family in that way is probably the most horrifying thing that could possibly happen to a child. This isn't just brutal, this is so dark that I'm surprised most of this was even allowed to air, even with the censoring, considering MHA is still PG-13.

I always feel sad about the Shimura family cause they were finally gonna stand up for Tenko (and Hana was apologizing for framing him) but no one will ever know and he won't know either.
The villains are "levelling up" because they've spent about a month battling Gigantomachia almost non-stop, especially Shigaraki. That's _a lot_ of training, even if (except for Shigaraki) they were taking turns. Also, as Redestro said, stress also seems to be a factor, and Shigaraki, Toga, and Twice have been under a lot of stress this last month, the later two especially this last day.
Slight correction to Discussion Break 4/4, Kenny said Shimura said she had a grandchild, and to not interact with them, but it was just her child. Her young son, Kotaro, was adopted away to keep him safe from All For One. But All For One found Kotaro's son, Tenko Shimura, later renamed Tomura Shigaraki.
they explained that quirk awakenings aren't common but they happen as an emergency adaptation to life threatening events. There were two awakenings in this arc, toga when she was going to die against curious and shigaraki had been on the verge of death for like a month and re-destro pushed him beyond a limit.
Well this had no other choice. The memories getting recovered had to be separated from the rest of the episode for its own merits. Shigaraki has talked about how his feelings about the memories he recovers for quite some time. And EVERYTIME the feelings don’t match what we’re shown. Well…at the very least they do IMPLY the root of it. Each memory is literally COVERING the cause. The earlier scene of Hana shows us Hana sweetly picking up her brother Tenko to go play…but he’s literally been stuffed in a corner and gotten in trouble “again.” And showing us the grandparents being sweet and caring…but their lines are literally them trying to cover or gloss over a tremendous amount of sorrow. Eat food! It will make you no longer sad! Don’t cry! It’ll make me cry too! There IS something here and Shigaraki is prying back the memories until he gets to the root of it all. Removed manga panel is a well dressed man leaving this house as he puts on a hat, and Shigaraki who I will refer as Tenko in this section, is next to his mom who is promising to give him a talking to. But whatever the reason it leads to the punishment system of this family. Tenko played hero, bothered this man, and is now getting dragged outside by his father for bothering the man and playing hero with the mother screaming to not be so rough. The father literally forces him outside where he has bad allergies and closing the curtains where he can’t even be looked at or checked on. It’s not about bothering the man that bothers the father, it’s the PLAYING HERO. Tenko is at this point quirkless and presumed to stay this way. And his father decides yeah let’s crush these dreams NOW. The family doesn’t appear to feel like they are in any position to stop him as he is the one with the power in their lives as the breadwinner. They might have faces of disagreement, but they give the father a pass as he does this sort of thing. And even try to justify his thinking to Tenko. He wants to be a hero but they agree to try and talk him out of it even if he’s playing nice with the kids that no one else will play with. (My, My, he kept that to today it seems to play with shut ins like Spinner and every other kind of rejected person in the league. He instinctively relates to rejection.) And that gives new life to the lines we saw BEFORE the major flashback. He needed them to support him. And they prioritized themselves. Got stuffed in a corner again for wanting to be a hero? Eh. Who cares let’s play. Crying for getting your dream rejected? Don’t think about it, eat food instead. Or don’t cry, I’ll cry too! It’s…getting worse as we start to circle this drain into the abyss. Well surely the sister Hana can help out with her support of him to be a hero. She finds a secret picture hidden in the study. One of none other than Nana Shimura and her son Kotaro. Their father and grandmother. And this makes Tenko feel THRILLED. But it rises questions. Why are the rules of heroes in this house so strict? Well. Right on cue. Playing fetch with their dog Mon, he must be internally questioning it as he awakens decay at the same time of thinking he CAN reach his dream if someone in his family did. But….Kotaro has found out and goes to confront his son. Hana appears to be very good at telling people what they WANT to hear without meaning it. And needlessly tattles on Tenko and twisting the story to her advantage. (DEFINITELY not the 1st time this has happened. I know siblings like that when they were young) And Kotaro just takes things to a whole other level. It gets physical. He’s been taking his trauma of Nana leaving him out on the family, and ESPECIALLY Tenko who wants to follow her footsteps. And it just KEEPS GOING. The family looks like they are TRYING to stop him but they don’t act. They let it happen. And Tenko is left with his allergies locked outside for literal HOURS as they discuss how to confront Kotaro. Not knowing how to confront is fine but NOT DOING IT when your kid needs more defense than EVER…it’s a complete failure. They come to the right conclusions WAY TOO LATE. They ALL failed him. Kotaro has nothing to stand on because he is literally recalling nothing BUT good memories of his mother. And she left him so AFO wouldn’t target him. And her husband had ALREADY been made a target AND was killed already. And her inevitable clash with the man himself was on the horizon. And it’s not at all impossible for her to have been taking care of and training All-Might already. But Kotaro couldn’t have even KNOWN that because she kept her family and hero life far apart. And he KNOWS she loved him as any mother should. He’s just ACTIVELY lashing out on how he feels even if it doesn’t match his circumstances which he’s KNOWN. He held a grudge and swore to never let anyone pursue the same path in life near him. In the WORST WAY. And of course…it leads to the nightmare core of ALL OF IT. Tenko hates how no one stood up for him. Hates he’s being punished for dreaming. Hates this whole situation was COMPLETELY AVOIDABLE as Hana just blew the lid for no reason. Hates…everyone. And everything LITERALLY falls apart. You are WHOLLY justified for throwing up watching this. The Medusa effect is there, but they DON’T spare you the aftermath. It’s HORRIFYING. Mon was just hugging Tenko, and just as suddenly, he’s gone. Tenko literally thinks a VILLAIN did it. That the house was under attack. Hana comes out to “apologize” (I’ll again state a sibling like that NO WAY was that the 1st time she threw him under the bus) but is met with the pile next to Tenko. She runs away without taking Tenko’s hand, and by reflex he tries anyways. Just like her attempts to support him. She was going to, and turned her back last second. And when he gets HER….his hair is getting shocked and losing its color. Not enough? Here comes the waves of decay. His mom goes to defend him but in like every sitatution falls apart in the attempt. The grandparents are completely ineffective and are consumed just the same. It leaves Kotaro to come down to the discovery of what has happened. There’s nothing left. Tenko is all he has now and JUST like he assumes Nana MEANT to do, goes to specifically abandon his restraint. As she “abandoned” him. And that mistake costs him. Tenko makes it personal. He WANTED this. His hatred was too much and every last bit of resentment boiled over until he brought the whole house down while making his father endure sheer agony. And just like that…it’s over. And he feels relief from the itch. THIS FMA STYLED NIGHTMARE RIVALS NINA. It is PAIN to watch and just a never ending pile of HORROR. And next time, the only thing that needs answers is what happened next. It’s all coming to a close. (And there’s still character profiles to make)

Ok. EASILY the most horrifying episode in all of MHA. It’s NOT close. And they took a NUMBER of the guard rails to get you where it hurts. They SAVED that liberty for this and MAN was it a good choice. And you WILL leave horrified. (I’ll as usual cover skipped manga scenes and make character profiles separate and today is a 2 parter as well so I can focus on the recovered memories on their own merit with their importance. So it’ll just be up til the Redestro fight part finishes for this analysis section) We start off with Twice moving to get Toga a blood transfusion by copying her. And he mentions how her measurements are very different from when they worked for Overhaul as “temps.” I actually just caught this little detail but he may have tried to copy Toga at the tower when he made Shigaraki, Dabi, and Compress. He may have attempted to make Toga next and failed. One of the copies is on lookout and recommends they talk to Dabi about plastic surgery. (Why? XD Guy is literally patchwork) And there’s a removed scene of Skeptic DESPERATELY running to where Twice is and he's making puppets on the way out of motorcycles and other objects screaming he didn’t fail over and over as he wants to capture Twice in person. Spinner decides to confront the Politician against a MASSIVE bulk of MLA members. He doesn’t know who Curious is but knows she must’ve been a high value executive based on how these people act about their leaders. (Both the announcement of her passing AND Spinner’s assumption are not in anime) But Spinner DOES know that this guy being on the frontlines where he can be reached by either him or Twice is a pretty bad strategic move. And now that we know his MLA Codename, Trumpet just views himself as untouchable, above consequences, and riles up his followers against Spinner using a Detnerat support mask. Spinner tries his hardest to get to Trumpet as he fights a glass barrier, a Star Wars alien, a snake maker if not an ACTUAL snake man, a number of Gargoyles form the 90’s cartoon, a NUMBER of people wearing matching ghost and monster masks, a cat man, a guy deciding to jump from 4 stories with no wings to fall on Spinner as a literal explosive, a ballerina that makes holes in walls, a man with protruding spikes all over him…and poor Spinner has been Yamcha’d. (Seriously. He landed in the iconic Yamcha pose. He didn’t deserve that but MAN is it funny) But Spinner takes it like a champ and gets right back up and even calls his methods of following others isn’t at all different from their cult. They follow their dear leader’s bandwagon. And he shouts his own devotion to Shigaraki even with Stain’s influence being all but gone. He doesn’t have other’s motivations or love like Toga. But these people are literally throwing their lives away for their leaders just the same. And Trumpet is ALSO apart of that. But you see, Trumpet has STATUS so therefore your good point is invalid. (Don’t we love seeing people like this? They’re so great at introspection.) Another removed scene is Slide N Go acting as a perimeter keeping people out of the city wide fight as the next fight goes underway. And all you hear in the background are gigantic footsteps approaching that perimeter. Like a Godzilla reference. (Except if you watched the original Godzilla, no a person won’t sit there for 5 footsteps wondering if it’s the wind.) Because now we got Shigaraki vs Redestro. The whole history lesson and other factors has to be done over from Redestro’s side. And Shigaraki successfully warned Twice to save Giran from his ever upgrading decay as things get more and more primal. Giran and Twice get the heck out of dodge with Giran noticing the decay getting stronger. Seriously this decay is getting crazy. It’s starting to come from his feet, his decay is pretty much projectile WAVES now, and Redestro goes full hulk to get going. (And let me tell you an equivalent hulk form in a business suit is nothing short of hysterical to look at. You could’ve easily called this guy Lord Business. But the LEGO movie came 1st) And literally starts tearing his fingers off to prevent him from being able to decay as he talks about not judging people by quirks like not judging books by covers, and he says it’s slightly flawed with personality connections LITERALLY being there for quirks. (It was censored so if you didn’t know, it’s also completely fair to assume they fell off from whatever process the Doctor is putting him through. Nothing vital.) And the question comes back. What world would be made in place if you DO destroy the status quo? Do you even have a plan? Shigaraki is NOT thinking about that. He’s thinking about his family again. He’s fighting a stress hulk, and is failing to get the ground he needs and his plan for Machia isn’t working out as well as he hoped. He’s disappointed, angry, and let down. And this feeling is growing…but the memories he’s recalling simply do NOT match the emotions that come from these memories. And he knows something is VERY wrong with his recollections. And he upgrades AGAIN. 5 fingers are no longer necessary. Shigaraki is getting less and less focused on the fight as the ONLY focus he can provide is simple. Destroy. His eyes are unfocused and he’s barely taking anything in, but his speed and physical traits have evolved so thoroughly from his training with Machia, and Redestro recognizes that he’s awakening his quirk. (Love the contrast of crisis between Geten getting an upgrade from Redestro burning his hand and Geten PANICKING, and Shigaraki awakening his buried family past. Guess this is why you can’t compare trauma. Trauma is relative to the person who endures it) Redestro has no choice but to end things before anything gets worse with Decay awakening. And literally HAKAI’S Shigaraki. But it’s simply not enough. (Also spare a thought for Redestro having enough bodily control when he’s 20 feet tall to answer a phone with 2 fingers. XD that is a HYSTERICAL image) Machia is FINALLY arriving in the city, so here’s suspect number two for destroying Deika, like anyone needs to ask why HE’S a suspect. And Skeptic is simply at a complete loss at what to do when he sees Machia. NO ONE has an answer for that. People are getting thrown every which way, and everyone knows IMMEDIATELY ohhhhh our numbers and skill don’t even MATTER to this beast. And Redestro…isn’t even focused on THAT or the people dealing with Machia. It’s all falling to his sheer focus on dealing with Shigaraki. He’s just thinking how Shigaraki survived his hakai and putting it together as Shigaraki forgoes survival instincts to destroy. (Hakai is a dragon ball move. A purple black hole essentially designed for ERASING everything in its path as a projectile. It’s IDENTICAL to his burden but it’s MHA collateral not Dragon ball.) And Shigaraki answers his question at long last. What happens if he destroys the status quo? No he has no plan to replace it with something new. Why would he care. He JUST wants to destroy. Funny thing is neither see it as creation, but in a way it is. We call that system Anarchy. I’m splitting up the main event of this episode in a separate comment. It’s gotta be done. This episode section got me to laugh pretty hard. It DEFINITELY WON'T going forward
Nah ya both wrong, shigaraki is doing the same thing as twice. When he killed his grandparents and mom he didn’t even touch them, just the floor. Which he never did since. He is basically removing restrictions on himself cause by his trauma.

idk if this is hot take but compared to enji , kotaro has a much more understandable reason for how he is still not justified, but in comparison, much more understandable
tbf, that comes from the fact that we actually know what led Kotaro to think like this. Endeavor is intentionally never given a backstory so we don’t know if there’s any sort of logical through line that led to him becoming the person we know today. Endeavor COULD have an understandable reason for why he became the monster we knew him as, but unlike Kotaro the point isn’t to understand why he did wrong, but to see his journey to evolve away from that.
Thing about this is we do know endeavors backstory and not justifying either of them but it’s a pretty sympathetic one that you could see why endeavor did what he did and turned out that way
Shuichi Iguchi Villain Name: Spinner Quirk: Gecko Grade: F Class: ? I find it VERY difficult to classify him as a villain. He doesn’t dedicate himself to anything actively evil and hangs with the wrong crowd. I’ve always said he’s most easily described as a lost soul. He was bullied and ostracized a lot and found a group that didn’t as terrible of people as they are. They don’t judge him for a quirk that has next to no function, and they often listen to his opinions quite seriously. He doesn’t often try to hurt people unless they try to hurt him. He JUST sticks to walls. You could easily just say he’s quirkless and is just a tough guy who prefers swords as a weapon of choice. That he wraps up with belts. So my answer for making him get stronger? Make him more buff. Be a gym bro. Get HUGE. He can have more equipment, he can just explore himself. And honestly, it’s what he needs to do anyway. Koku Hanabata MLA Codename: Trumpet Quirk: Incite Grade: D Class: Exploitation Alright a politician with the power to incite people into higher physical and mental feats to serve his gain like a cult, has no shame or introspection while vowing to be above anything that someone who is less fortunate than him purely for factors out of his control and rubs it in his face…and has a very special choice of Codename. When did MVA come out in manga? 3-4 years ago? Hoo boy. Let’s leave THAT alone. Based on sound vibrations, the more he creates vibrations in the air, the more of an effect he increases for others. Hence the mask that boosts SO much more because there’s several speakers in there and he just tries to make a stronger point by shouting it. He’s sheer support and buffs other people’s attributes. I have next to exploration in mind for him, he has INCREDIBLE balance as his campaign vehicle jerks around. He does need some armor and I’d like to see him with like marching band people formations to best suit his agendas. Also people need to believe in him so…you know. He’s good at getting people to drink Koolaid. It’s funny just how much he leans into exploitation to the point of being unable to do any of the other classes. He draws so much attention with next to no ability to fight on his own it’s next to impossible to miss him trying to do espionage, stealth, or combat. I don’t really have much space for him in all this so here’s Atsuhiro Sako Villain Name: Mr Compress Quirk: Compress Grade: C Class: Stealth/Espionage/Exploitation Ok now he doesn’t really get much purpose in this arc sadly. But he DOES have a truly versatile quirk. He is a showman first and foremost and unlike the other villains he’s both pretty harmless personality wise but also knows EXACTLY what he’s doing and doesn’t seem lost at all in this crowd. Theres no denial, excuses, or even unawareness to reality. He’s JUST a jerk that wants attention and sought out both of those to great effect. He gets a LOT of leeway with projectiles with his marbles containing who knows what, completely displacing matter and shaking structures by doing so, and it just works on EVERYTHING with no real counters. He’s incredibly mobile, he’s pretty solid at support, and little can keep him down. I don’t know his surface area limits, and I don’t think there’s a quantity limit either so he can do some REAL damage. Guy could set up a landmine field by packing giant boulders in marbles and snapping them out whenever anyone is near as a surprise. Not to mention I’ve never seen these marbles break so I think he can straight up make people invulnerable if he uses it at the right timing from big falls, impacts, or what have you. He’s an AMAZING support but he is a pretty genuine threat offensively too. He picks his own role whenever he wants. He just doesn’t seem to thrive in combat even though he COULD be. He COULD be a symbol class. I won’t cover Geten, Dabi, Redestro, OR Shigaraki til next time as there’s still more to come. And while a good spot to talk about Machia, I won’t until his quirks become relevant.
I feel like heteromorphs like spinner always have a natural stat boost in them. He didn't train as far as i know, he was a shut in, but he's strong enough to wield a sword of swords (given to him by giran) which is estimated to be 1000 lbs, and naturally athletic and agile. His quirk has the least utility but i can see him using it to enhance his grip. For people like spinner, he needs a dedicated fighting style with his innate physical ability. He is possibly the least experienced out of the group yet is able to keep up with them. There is also the route of taking small doses of trigger. There is a version of it that doesn't have the negative side effects of turning people out of control. And trigger can be found in supplements (although not fda approved, not technically illegal) it will give a slight boost to the users quirk. A quirk similar to Gecko called Lizard exists in Vigilantes. With trigger, the user ended up growing pterodactyl like wings, so for spinner it could just give him more abilities of a gecko (or iguana based on his name). I doubt it's hard to find once they get Giran back.
For Trumpet, a good upgrade could be debuffing enemies instead. It is possible since when he buffs allies, their bodies still take a toll so doing the opposite and demoralizing enemies to be weaker would make him the best support
Toga is the only one who leveled up. Both Shigiraki and Twice's quirks haven't changes at all. They've returned to form. Both their perceived improvements were simply getting over some of their issues. Giving them full access to what they've had all along. And that's not to say that they're "over" these issues. But they both had breakthroughs.
Honestly the letter just makes it worse from his point of view. His mother loved him but still abandoned him and he went into foster care. That's going to mess up any kid's ability to form healthy relationships.
How do you deal with a kid like Shigaraki? A quirk that destroys anything he touches, and an insatiable desire to destroy, along with the irresistible itching when he isn't destroying things. How do you raise a kid like that to not destroy things? He has a near constant, visceral, somatic push to destroy. Would there honestly be any way to raise a kid like that to become anything other than what Shigaraki has become?
Yes, like with Toga too, if they had been supported from then moment they got their quirks then maybe they could've been able to learn how to live with others, in the next episode, younsee Shigaraki hugging AFO and not devaying him, mwaning if he were to be shown compasion and care, he wouldn't have been decaying stuff or people since he wouldn't want to, but instead they were abandoned, suppressed to be normal, maybe Shigaraki would have never awakened to that mutated quirk if his life would've been different
Shigaraki doesn't have any inherent urge to destroy though, this is clearly explained in the next episode (no spoilers) and evidenced furthermore by how sick and nauseous killing people make him, like when he vomited after decaying a whole crowd of Re-Destro's soldiers.

17:46 I've actually developed IST (basically tachycardia with no apparent reason) because of stress and anxiety. Last year in October I was out with my friends at a cafe, and I felt dizzy, weak, and restless, I felt out of sorts, and short of breath, my watch, which can take my bpms and my stress level, was out of battery so I didn't know what was going at the time, I didn't feel my heart beating particulary fast tbh. My friends acompanied me to the ER, and my friend said "hey, give me your wrist I'll put my apple watch on", his bpms were like 75 as we were sitting down, as soon as he put his watch on me, they jumped to 157. When they called me for triage, and I told them my symptoms and the machine started beeping bcs of my bpms, they put a yellow wrist band on me, got me on a wheelchair and sent me straight for the trauma-shock unit. They thought I was having a heart attack lol. they couldn't determine what was going on, so they just managed my symptoms. 2 days later i was back with my heart at 244 bpms while resting. I went through multiple tests and they determined it was IST probs bcs of stress lol. I still have it and I have to take medications now. EDIT: my watch just vibrated, indicating my bpms are at 156 right now LOL 28:48 I disagree deeply. It basically invalidates those of us who went through childhood trauma and didn't become monstrous or abusers. I won't go into my own trauma, but my revenge was to never be abusive, and sadly most of my friends have their own share of trauma (I guess birds of a feather...) and none of them have ever been abusive, they always try to be kinder than those who didn't show them any. There's a reason why I have Endeavor tattooed, and why I will get Hawks eventually too, why those two are my favorite characters. There's also a reason why, while I might sympathize with the LoV, I will never like any of them.
After what was seen of Tenko Shimura's life fully, I really do not think he had a chance. You even acknowledge that some become bitter and vindictive where they'll get revenge no matter what.

But I disagree with the no choice premise, that makes us nothing more than pawns of fate. You make the choice to hurt others, you might hurt someone as a mistake once, maybe even twice, but when it becomes a pattern it's a matter of choice. As kids I believe the LoVs were set up for failure and had not a choice at the time. I've been taught that once you're an adult you are fully responsible for your actions and it's your job to heal what is broken, no one owes you anything, and if you don't heal what hurts, no one else will. This is why I have no love for any of the LoV characters, I do not like them, and I will never side with any of them.
@@jimjimcherie Adults may have choices, but it's naive to think everyone is capable of overcoming trauma. Some simply can't do it alone and some just never can. After all, how does Tomura Shigaraki overcome what All For One did? He was set up from the start and just couldn't even if he became evil in the end. Regardless of how responsible he is for his actions, it was way too late for Shigaraki.

It was about saying he had no hope of overcoming his trauma as he was not going to be able to do it alone just like the others would. Even with choices, some are that lost and consumed. It's like with Azula and fictional or not, some people in real life are like the League. They're wrong for what they did but this idea that anyone can always take full control of their life is naive.
really, it feels like it was ONLY Toga who got a new ability. Shigaraki has spreading decay as a kid after all of the trauma. it was almost like his quirk got nerfed as his memories were repressed. So he wasn't so much gaining a new ability here, just getting full access to his previous power.
This episode and the next might be my favorites. The evolution of Shigaraki's character is cooler than his quirk's evolution. He really goes from a loser who can't achieve much of anything to a proper force to be reckoned with. Really earns his spot as leader.
Kotaro didn't invite his parents to live with them cause his dad/Nana's husband was killed (Gran Torini says in season 3), which is why he left him in an orphanage to go after AFO, and then AFO killed her (he says he did to All Might when they fight also in S3), thought i dont think Kotaro ever found out she died

This is the episode I’ve been SO EXCITED to see her suffer through 😊 So glad she instantly got that Shigaraki’s “allergies” were/are trauma based the instant he said it’s worse when he’s at home I’ve watched a lot of dark stuff in anime and live action shows alike, but Shigaraki’s backstory remains the single most disturbing, heart wrenching, and emotionally devastating backstories I’ve ever seen. Not only is it horrifying by itself, but the highly artistic and cinematic way it’s presented really adds to the suspense and horror, and it’s “beautifully” narrated by Shigaraki. Not to mention knowing what follows, knowing how AFO catches and grooms him afterwards… god it’s awful. Also as many others have pointed out, young Tenko makes it a point to hang out with and include the outcasts in his school, and now he’s the leader of a group of outcasts from hero society
Have you noticed that both the protagonist and antagonist had to overcome someone who had a similar quirk to their counterpart? Deku had to battle Overhaul, who has a touch based quirk like Shigaraki. Shigaraki has to battle Re Destro, who has a strength type quirk that can be valued by percentages, like Deku.
5:45 so something they omitted from the story in this part of the anime (though they will very and I mean very briefly comeback to much later), in the manga just before the League take on Gigantomachia they are without money and try to rob a house. In the house they find and we are introduced to the Creature Rejection Clan, a group who hate people with quirks that make them look non human aka different from everyone else (not unlike some let’s say bed sheet wearing idiotic groups in the real world). It’s at this point you start to learn that there is a very dark and sadly very reflective of real world discrimination that exists in the world of MHA. This is what is alluded to here when Trumpet calls Spinner a shut in as due to his quirk he was harassed and victimised becoming socially isolated which resulted in his villainous views on the world and when I read this I realised every time I saw (and you guys while watching) and laughed at how someone in this series looked within the story there were people who would actively try to hurt and kill those people just for looking weird.
is shigarki's improvement an awakening (at this point) because even at 5 years old he was decaying things without touching them and here he's doing the same thing
I never thought Shigaraki was evolving here. When his quirk first manifested at 5, he already had the power to kill 3 people at once accidentally just by touching the ground. Shigaraki suppressed those memories, and that mental block suppressed his quirk as well. I always understood this as him unleashing his full power (that he already had within him). Someone correct me if that’s wrong.
The dad is also full trauma thanks his mother who abandoned him and left him a note. Having her final words being replayed over as everything is being destroyed is so messed up.
You know what I've always wondered? If quirks are passed down from family and new ones can mutate and manifest into something new based on their families quirks, like with the todoroki, then what kind of quirks did his parents have that lead to the creation of decay? And why didn't his older sister get hers first? Could it have been that he dealt with more stress and trauma that sped up his to come earlier?
Mutation quirks aren't usually based on what the parents or anyone in the family has. Like with Eri. Sometimes a child is just born with a completely different quirk
All For One actually explains this earlier in a previous episode, he says that Decay is a variant Quirk completely unlike any his family manifested previously. That’s why his family wasn’t able to predict the potential danger or know how to deal with it nothing like Decay had ever emerged
All For One tells Shigaraki in one of the episodes prior that Shigaraki’s is a mutation just like Eri was. In both cases the quirk came from absolutely no one else in the family so it was impossible to prepare for or predict.
Interesting how we’ve seen Deku fight someone who has a similar quirk to Shigaraki and now vice versa with the “super strength” part. It’s cool seeing each other’s growth.
so now you know why shigaraki is the way he is his entire family save his sister are the cause his father for abusing him and his mother and grandparents for only ever standing by and watching not lifting a finger to stop it only ever placating him at most and the reason why his sister has no blame of it (despite throwing him under the bus) is simply because she is a kid
The manga had it slightly gorier, in the anime they don't turn to blood and chunks until after they've fully disintegrated, but in the manga they immediately turn into bloody goop with no stone-like decay effect. It's still not shown directly on panel but the imagery is definitely much more violent.
In the manga, ReDestro actually blew off half of Shigaraki's hand, before he grabbed it to finish the job; which is why he was so surprised that Shigaraki could still use his quirk with that hand. Also, the scene were Shigaraki accidentally killed his family with his quirk was even bloodier in the manga.
This episode in particular is one of the ones I most anticipated Montana's reaction towards (and quite a few other reactions). This is straight up horror territory. And as a manga reader, there is so much more I want to say about this particular event. But I won't.
Yooooooo Montana has gotten better at the gory parts!! OK ok idk I'm so excited it's like seeing your friends watch your favorite anime. I kind want to see them react to Tokyo Ghoul! I know the anime messed it up but when they get to the 12 episode!! That's going to be CRAZY!!!
So, another couple things to keep in mind with the evolutions/upgrades. The students/good guys have all pretty much been upgrading/evolving their quirks. Kirishima’s Unbreakable, Ida’s Recipro, Ochako’s increase in limits, etc. And that is leaving off Midoriya with OFA growing. It was shown in more episodes, but the heroes are the main perspective of the show, so they get more screen time. As far as the Villains happening all at once (aside from Dabi), my thoughts onn it are they all started at relatively the same power level relative to their quirk and then have had almost identical experiences, stress, etc since then, so their growth would be very similar, with differences shown strictly in the power of their quirks.
if you pay attention youll see at least his moms hands rumble when he kills her and based on how his powers have worked so far it kinda tells me that the hands that all for one gave him werent actually his family's which kinda makes them that much worse imo
This is it! We are here. Prepare for pain!!! It was amazing when Giantomacia ran through the city destroying everything. Not so funny the second time he does that. Little Tenko was so cute and reminds like of little Izuku. Tenko was five and still had no quirk which was weird because kids develop a quirk by the age of four. Decay unlocked for him at five; he accidentally declared Mon(dog), Hana(sister), his mom and grandparents. He intentionally killed his dad with the intent to kill after he hit him with sheers. So Montana you have no idea the "opportunity" AFO took with Tenko. When you two find out what that monster did, it'll only make Tenko/Tomura more tragic. I like the graphic the manga is to depict how traumatizing their stories were.
2 things to note: shigarakis fingers were ripped off in the manga, making the reveal of being able to decay with less than 5 fingers make better sense and also this is where shigaraki got his lip scar.
Hmm, might not mean much, and possibly tbe artist style, but in that moment his sister said she would cheer him on as a hero, made me think of deku being excited about heros at that age, even the way their faces looked were super similar, almost like at a point they seemed almost the same in what lit up their eyes, kindred spirits if i pushed it, but certain things stick with you as a child, especially if they change your whole view of life, midoriya had a big one, and tenko had many small things that made the big one happen,

I think what makes this more tragic is if his quirk would’ve activated at least five minutes later then he would’ve heard his entire family apologize and try to do better.
It's heartbreaking to see his mom still reach out to save him even as she's dying and Shigaraki looking back and trying to rationalize these memories and believing that he may have wanted to hurt his whole family like he did.

The part that hurts most for me is Tenko's mom still reaching out to hug him even as Tenko is completely destroying everything around him. Shigaraki's backstory is one of the most tragic one's I've ever seen, just goes to show you how quickly things can fall apart sometimes (quite literally in this case).

This show might have more of an abundance of characters with "daddy issues" than any other show that K&M have reacted to.

33:30 That's one thing I really appreciate about My Hero. In almost every anime, we constantly see the heroes leveling up and their power growing; we see the whole class improve all the time, so why not the villains too? Having them train and develop their powers more is fantastic because if they didn't power up, there's no way they'd stand a chance. But its so rare for shows to include a villain powering up arc, its almost always "the villain was hiding more power the entire time and chooses to power up mid fight just because"
Horikoshi has said that he's always wanted to go darker with MHA, even as far back as the training camp arc. And this episode/arc is basically the culmination of that desire. The anime typically does a form of censorship with Shigaraki's quirk. Back in S1, we saw that he decayed Aizawa's elbow until he reached muscle. But every instance after, it was less of a breakdown and more of turning to stone and crumbling. This episode still had a bit of the stone aspect but it also captured the horror of the manga by still showing the chunks.
I think it's really tragic how things turned out. Nana knew that AFO was likely going to take her out. So she hid her son away in an attempt to keep her family safe. But because she vanished without a trace and very little explanation, Kotaro didn't understand. Not to mention, he was a child. So he grew up with that regret and sadness until it eventually became hate. But instead of dealing with his emotions, he bottled it up and took it out on his children. In the manga, we actually see him hit Tenko so hard that he physically falls over. And then he hits him again. So, bit of anime Censorship.
Tenko wanted to be a hero. But his dad rejected him, and his family didn't exactly help. They just told him not to cry. And when they finally did step up, it was too late. The house was destroyed, family and all. He says the itch went away. We see Tenko itch after this incident however. So I wonder if the itch is his quirk quite literally begging him to destroy something he doesn't like. Or if it's more of an anxiety thing. Where he starts itching whenever he's uncomfortable.
Either way, Nana's attempt to protect her family from AFO actually ended up pushing them right into his hands. The act of good ended up creating the successor to the Ultimate Evil.
I’m pretty sure the reason he started itching again is because he forgot the whole incident so the itching acted as a reminder to destroy something but he wasn’t sure what it was so it reached a point were he just wanted to destroy everything. Cause to a child their world is practically just their family their home and maybe a couple of teachers and friends, so when he destroyed that it was as if he destroyed the world. But as an adult your world view is much larger that’s why Shigaraki now wants to destroy everything (that’s my perspective of it at least)

The only person who’s quirk evolved was Toga’s. She can now use the quirk of the person she loves, if she drinks their blood.
Twice and Shigaraki’s full power was just suppressed. But over the years and fighting Gigantomachia, has increased their out put and stamina. Now with out those mental blocks they can both unleash incredible power.
I will say Shigaraki not needing 5 fingers might be an evolution. As a kid he used his whole hand and his decay spread. But now against the MLA we see him use at most 2 fingers and his feet. And he has some control over where it spreads, notice his shoe didn’t complete decay at first.
No wonder Shigaraki is the way he is. The amount of abuse he went through even before *that* day would be enough to scar him for the rest of his life, but him accidentally killing his whole family in that way is probably the most horrifying thing that could possibly happen to a child. This isn't just brutal, this is so dark that I'm surprised most of this was even allowed to air, even with the censoring, considering MHA is still PG-13.

The villains are "levelling up" because they've spent about a month battling Gigantomachia almost non-stop, especially Shigaraki. That's _a lot_ of training, even if (except for Shigaraki) they were taking turns.
Also, as Redestro said, stress also seems to be a factor, and Shigaraki, Toga, and Twice have been under a lot of stress this last month, the later two especially this last day.

Slight correction to Discussion Break 4/4, Kenny said Shimura said she had a grandchild, and to not interact with them, but it was just her child. Her young son, Kotaro, was adopted away to keep him safe from All For One. But All For One found Kotaro's son, Tenko Shimura, later renamed Tomura Shigaraki.
The inner dialogues kill me every time😂
they explained that quirk awakenings aren't common but they happen as an emergency adaptation to life threatening events. There were two awakenings in this arc, toga when she was going to die against curious and shigaraki had been on the verge of death for like a month and re-destro pushed him beyond a limit.
Well this had no other choice. The memories getting recovered had to be separated from the rest of the episode for its own merits. Shigaraki has talked about how his feelings about the memories he recovers for quite some time. And EVERYTIME the feelings don’t match what we’re shown. Well…at the very least they do IMPLY the root of it. Each memory is literally COVERING the cause.
The earlier scene of Hana shows us Hana sweetly picking up her brother Tenko to go play…but he’s literally been stuffed in a corner and gotten in trouble “again.” And showing us the grandparents being sweet and caring…but their lines are literally them trying to cover or gloss over a tremendous amount of sorrow. Eat food! It will make you no longer sad! Don’t cry! It’ll make me cry too! There IS something here and Shigaraki is prying back the memories until he gets to the root of it all.
Removed manga panel is a well dressed man leaving this house as he puts on a hat, and Shigaraki who I will refer as Tenko in this section, is next to his mom who is promising to give him a talking to. But whatever the reason it leads to the punishment system of this family. Tenko played hero, bothered this man, and is now getting dragged outside by his father for bothering the man and playing hero with the mother screaming to not be so rough. The father literally forces him outside where he has bad allergies and closing the curtains where he can’t even be looked at or checked on. It’s not about bothering the man that bothers the father, it’s the PLAYING HERO. Tenko is at this point quirkless and presumed to stay this way. And his father decides yeah let’s crush these dreams NOW.
The family doesn’t appear to feel like they are in any position to stop him as he is the one with the power in their lives as the breadwinner. They might have faces of disagreement, but they give the father a pass as he does this sort of thing. And even try to justify his thinking to Tenko. He wants to be a hero but they agree to try and talk him out of it even if he’s playing nice with the kids that no one else will play with. (My, My, he kept that to today it seems to play with shut ins like Spinner and every other kind of rejected person in the league. He instinctively relates to rejection.) And that gives new life to the lines we saw BEFORE the major flashback. He needed them to support him. And they prioritized themselves. Got stuffed in a corner again for wanting to be a hero? Eh. Who cares let’s play. Crying for getting your dream rejected? Don’t think about it, eat food instead. Or don’t cry, I’ll cry too! It’s…getting worse as we start to circle this drain into the abyss.
Well surely the sister Hana can help out with her support of him to be a hero. She finds a secret picture hidden in the study. One of none other than Nana Shimura and her son Kotaro. Their father and grandmother. And this makes Tenko feel THRILLED. But it rises questions. Why are the rules of heroes in this house so strict? Well. Right on cue. Playing fetch with their dog Mon, he must be internally questioning it as he awakens decay at the same time of thinking he CAN reach his dream if someone in his family did. But….Kotaro has found out and goes to confront his son. Hana appears to be very good at telling people what they WANT to hear without meaning it. And needlessly tattles on Tenko and twisting the story to her advantage. (DEFINITELY not the 1st time this has happened. I know siblings like that when they were young) And Kotaro just takes things to a whole other level.
It gets physical. He’s been taking his trauma of Nana leaving him out on the family, and ESPECIALLY Tenko who wants to follow her footsteps. And it just KEEPS GOING. The family looks like they are TRYING to stop him but they don’t act. They let it happen. And Tenko is left with his allergies locked outside for literal HOURS as they discuss how to confront Kotaro. Not knowing how to confront is fine but NOT DOING IT when your kid needs more defense than EVER…it’s a complete failure. They come to the right conclusions WAY TOO LATE. They ALL failed him.
Kotaro has nothing to stand on because he is literally recalling nothing BUT good memories of his mother. And she left him so AFO wouldn’t target him. And her husband had ALREADY been made a target AND was killed already. And her inevitable clash with the man himself was on the horizon. And it’s not at all impossible for her to have been taking care of and training All-Might already. But Kotaro couldn’t have even KNOWN that because she kept her family and hero life far apart. And he KNOWS she loved him as any mother should. He’s just ACTIVELY lashing out on how he feels even if it doesn’t match his circumstances which he’s KNOWN. He held a grudge and swore to never let anyone pursue the same path in life near him. In the WORST WAY.
And of course…it leads to the nightmare core of ALL OF IT. Tenko hates how no one stood up for him. Hates he’s being punished for dreaming. Hates this whole situation was COMPLETELY AVOIDABLE as Hana just blew the lid for no reason. Hates…everyone. And everything LITERALLY falls apart. You are WHOLLY justified for throwing up watching this. The Medusa effect is there, but they DON’T spare you the aftermath. It’s HORRIFYING. Mon was just hugging Tenko, and just as suddenly, he’s gone. Tenko literally thinks a VILLAIN did it. That the house was under attack. Hana comes out to “apologize” (I’ll again state a sibling like that NO WAY was that the 1st time she threw him under the bus) but is met with the pile next to Tenko. She runs away without taking Tenko’s hand, and by reflex he tries anyways. Just like her attempts to support him. She was going to, and turned her back last second. And when he gets HER….his hair is getting shocked and losing its color. Not enough? Here comes the waves of decay. His mom goes to defend him but in like every sitatution falls apart in the attempt. The grandparents are completely ineffective and are consumed just the same.
It leaves Kotaro to come down to the discovery of what has happened. There’s nothing left. Tenko is all he has now and JUST like he assumes Nana MEANT to do, goes to specifically abandon his restraint. As she “abandoned” him. And that mistake costs him. Tenko makes it personal. He WANTED this. His hatred was too much and every last bit of resentment boiled over until he brought the whole house down while making his father endure sheer agony. And just like that…it’s over. And he feels relief from the itch.

Ok. EASILY the most horrifying episode in all of MHA. It’s NOT close. And they took a NUMBER of the guard rails to get you where it hurts. They SAVED that liberty for this and MAN was it a good choice. And you WILL leave horrified. (I’ll as usual cover skipped manga scenes and make character profiles separate and today is a 2 parter as well so I can focus on the recovered memories on their own merit with their importance. So it’ll just be up til the Redestro fight part finishes for this analysis section)
We start off with Twice moving to get Toga a blood transfusion by copying her. And he mentions how her measurements are very different from when they worked for Overhaul as “temps.” I actually just caught this little detail but he may have tried to copy Toga at the tower when he made Shigaraki, Dabi, and Compress. He may have attempted to make Toga next and failed. One of the copies is on lookout and recommends they talk to Dabi about plastic surgery. (Why? XD Guy is literally patchwork) And there’s a removed scene of Skeptic DESPERATELY running to where Twice is and he's making puppets on the way out of motorcycles and other objects screaming he didn’t fail over and over as he wants to capture Twice in person.
Spinner decides to confront the Politician against a MASSIVE bulk of MLA members. He doesn’t know who Curious is but knows she must’ve been a high value executive based on how these people act about their leaders. (Both the announcement of her passing AND Spinner’s assumption are not in anime) But Spinner DOES know that this guy being on the frontlines where he can be reached by either him or Twice is a pretty bad strategic move. And now that we know his MLA Codename, Trumpet just views himself as untouchable, above consequences, and riles up his followers against Spinner using a Detnerat support mask.
Spinner tries his hardest to get to Trumpet as he fights a glass barrier, a Star Wars alien, a snake maker if not an ACTUAL snake man, a number of Gargoyles form the 90’s cartoon, a NUMBER of people wearing matching ghost and monster masks, a cat man, a guy deciding to jump from 4 stories with no wings to fall on Spinner as a literal explosive, a ballerina that makes holes in walls, a man with protruding spikes all over him…and poor Spinner has been Yamcha’d. (Seriously. He landed in the iconic Yamcha pose. He didn’t deserve that but MAN is it funny) But Spinner takes it like a champ and gets right back up and even calls his methods of following others isn’t at all different from their cult. They follow their dear leader’s bandwagon. And he shouts his own devotion to Shigaraki even with Stain’s influence being all but gone. He doesn’t have other’s motivations or love like Toga. But these people are literally throwing their lives away for their leaders just the same. And Trumpet is ALSO apart of that. But you see, Trumpet has STATUS so therefore your good point is invalid. (Don’t we love seeing people like this? They’re so great at introspection.)
Another removed scene is Slide N Go acting as a perimeter keeping people out of the city wide fight as the next fight goes underway. And all you hear in the background are gigantic footsteps approaching that perimeter. Like a Godzilla reference. (Except if you watched the original Godzilla, no a person won’t sit there for 5 footsteps wondering if it’s the wind.)
Because now we got Shigaraki vs Redestro. The whole history lesson and other factors has to be done over from Redestro’s side. And Shigaraki successfully warned Twice to save Giran from his ever upgrading decay as things get more and more primal. Giran and Twice get the heck out of dodge with Giran noticing the decay getting stronger.
Seriously this decay is getting crazy. It’s starting to come from his feet, his decay is pretty much projectile WAVES now, and Redestro goes full hulk to get going. (And let me tell you an equivalent hulk form in a business suit is nothing short of hysterical to look at. You could’ve easily called this guy Lord Business. But the LEGO movie came 1st) And literally starts tearing his fingers off to prevent him from being able to decay as he talks about not judging people by quirks like not judging books by covers, and he says it’s slightly flawed with personality connections LITERALLY being there for quirks. (It was censored so if you didn’t know, it’s also completely fair to assume they fell off from whatever process the Doctor is putting him through. Nothing vital.) And the question comes back. What world would be made in place if you DO destroy the status quo? Do you even have a plan?
Shigaraki is NOT thinking about that. He’s thinking about his family again. He’s fighting a stress hulk, and is failing to get the ground he needs and his plan for Machia isn’t working out as well as he hoped. He’s disappointed, angry, and let down. And this feeling is growing…but the memories he’s recalling simply do NOT match the emotions that come from these memories. And he knows something is VERY wrong with his recollections. And he upgrades AGAIN. 5 fingers are no longer necessary.
Shigaraki is getting less and less focused on the fight as the ONLY focus he can provide is simple. Destroy. His eyes are unfocused and he’s barely taking anything in, but his speed and physical traits have evolved so thoroughly from his training with Machia, and Redestro recognizes that he’s awakening his quirk. (Love the contrast of crisis between Geten getting an upgrade from Redestro burning his hand and Geten PANICKING, and Shigaraki awakening his buried family past. Guess this is why you can’t compare trauma. Trauma is relative to the person who endures it) Redestro has no choice but to end things before anything gets worse with Decay awakening. And literally HAKAI’S Shigaraki. But it’s simply not enough. (Also spare a thought for Redestro having enough bodily control when he’s 20 feet tall to answer a phone with 2 fingers. XD that is a HYSTERICAL image)
Machia is FINALLY arriving in the city, so here’s suspect number two for destroying Deika, like anyone needs to ask why HE’S a suspect. And Skeptic is simply at a complete loss at what to do when he sees Machia. NO ONE has an answer for that. People are getting thrown every which way, and everyone knows IMMEDIATELY ohhhhh our numbers and skill don’t even MATTER to this beast. And Redestro…isn’t even focused on THAT or the people dealing with Machia. It’s all falling to his sheer focus on dealing with Shigaraki. He’s just thinking how Shigaraki survived his hakai and putting it together as Shigaraki forgoes survival instincts to destroy. (Hakai is a dragon ball move. A purple black hole essentially designed for ERASING everything in its path as a projectile. It’s IDENTICAL to his burden but it’s MHA collateral not Dragon ball.) And Shigaraki answers his question at long last. What happens if he destroys the status quo? No he has no plan to replace it with something new. Why would he care. He JUST wants to destroy. Funny thing is neither see it as creation, but in a way it is. We call that system Anarchy.

tbf, that comes from the fact that we actually know what led Kotaro to think like this. Endeavor is intentionally never given a backstory so we don’t know if there’s any sort of logical through line that led to him becoming the person we know today.
Endeavor COULD have an understandable reason for why he became the monster we knew him as, but unlike Kotaro the point isn’t to understand why he did wrong, but to see his journey to evolve away from that.
Thing about this is we do know endeavors backstory and not justifying either of them but it’s a pretty sympathetic one that you could see why endeavor did what he did and turned out that way

I find it VERY difficult to classify him as a villain. He doesn’t dedicate himself to anything actively evil and hangs with the wrong crowd. I’ve always said he’s most easily described as a lost soul. He was bullied and ostracized a lot and found a group that didn’t as terrible of people as they are. They don’t judge him for a quirk that has next to no function, and they often listen to his opinions quite seriously. He doesn’t often try to hurt people unless they try to hurt him. He JUST sticks to walls. You could easily just say he’s quirkless and is just a tough guy who prefers swords as a weapon of choice. That he wraps up with belts. So my answer for making him get stronger? Make him more buff. Be a gym bro. Get HUGE. He can have more equipment, he can just explore himself. And honestly, it’s what he needs to do anyway.

Alright a politician with the power to incite people into higher physical and mental feats to serve his gain like a cult, has no shame or introspection while vowing to be above anything that someone who is less fortunate than him purely for factors out of his control and rubs it in his face…and has a very special choice of Codename. When did MVA come out in manga? 3-4 years ago? Hoo boy. Let’s leave THAT alone. Based on sound vibrations, the more he creates vibrations in the air, the more of an effect he increases for others. Hence the mask that boosts SO much more because there’s several speakers in there and he just tries to make a stronger point by shouting it. He’s sheer support and buffs other people’s attributes. I have next to exploration in mind for him, he has INCREDIBLE balance as his campaign vehicle jerks around. He does need some armor and I’d like to see him with like marching band people formations to best suit his agendas. Also people need to believe in him so…you know. He’s good at getting people to drink Koolaid. It’s funny just how much he leans into exploitation to the point of being unable to do any of the other classes. He draws so much attention with next to no ability to fight on his own it’s next to impossible to miss him trying to do espionage, stealth, or combat.

Villain Name: Mr Compress
Quirk: Compress
Grade: C
Class: Stealth/Espionage/Exploitation
Ok now he doesn’t really get much purpose in this arc sadly. But he DOES have a truly versatile quirk. He is a showman first and foremost and unlike the other villains he’s both pretty harmless personality wise but also knows EXACTLY what he’s doing and doesn’t seem lost at all in this crowd. Theres no denial, excuses, or even unawareness to reality. He’s JUST a jerk that wants attention and sought out both of those to great effect. He gets a LOT of leeway with projectiles with his marbles containing who knows what, completely displacing matter and shaking structures by doing so, and it just works on EVERYTHING with no real counters. He’s incredibly mobile, he’s pretty solid at support, and little can keep him down. I don’t know his surface area limits, and I don’t think there’s a quantity limit either so he can do some REAL damage. Guy could set up a landmine field by packing giant boulders in marbles and snapping them out whenever anyone is near as a surprise. Not to mention I’ve never seen these marbles break so I think he can straight up make people invulnerable if he uses it at the right timing from big falls, impacts, or what have you. He’s an AMAZING support but he is a pretty genuine threat offensively too. He picks his own role whenever he wants. He just doesn’t seem to thrive in combat even though he COULD be. He COULD be a symbol class.
I won’t cover Geten, Dabi, Redestro, OR Shigaraki til next time as there’s still more to come. And while a good spot to talk about Machia, I won’t until his quirks become relevant.
I feel like heteromorphs like spinner always have a natural stat boost in them. He didn't train as far as i know, he was a shut in, but he's strong enough to wield a sword of swords (given to him by giran) which is estimated to be 1000 lbs, and naturally athletic and agile. His quirk has the least utility but i can see him using it to enhance his grip. For people like spinner, he needs a dedicated fighting style with his innate physical ability. He is possibly the least experienced out of the group yet is able to keep up with them. There is also the route of taking small doses of trigger. There is a version of it that doesn't have the negative side effects of turning people out of control. And trigger can be found in supplements (although not fda approved, not technically illegal) it will give a slight boost to the users quirk. A quirk similar to Gecko called Lizard exists in Vigilantes. With trigger, the user ended up growing pterodactyl like wings, so for spinner it could just give him more abilities of a gecko (or iguana based on his name). I doubt it's hard to find once they get Giran back.
For Trumpet, a good upgrade could be debuffing enemies instead. It is possible since when he buffs allies, their bodies still take a toll so doing the opposite and demoralizing enemies to be weaker would make him the best support

Toga is the only one who leveled up. Both Shigiraki and Twice's quirks haven't changes at all. They've returned to form. Both their perceived improvements were simply getting over some of their issues. Giving them full access to what they've had all along. And that's not to say that they're "over" these issues. But they both had breakthroughs.

Honestly the letter just makes it worse from his point of view. His mother loved him but still abandoned him and he went into foster care. That's going to mess up any kid's ability to form healthy relationships.
How do you deal with a kid like Shigaraki? A quirk that destroys anything he touches, and an insatiable desire to destroy, along with the irresistible itching when he isn't destroying things. How do you raise a kid like that to not destroy things? He has a near constant, visceral, somatic push to destroy. Would there honestly be any way to raise a kid like that to become anything other than what Shigaraki has become?
Yes, like with Toga too, if they had been supported from then moment they got their quirks then maybe they could've been able to learn how to live with others, in the next episode, younsee Shigaraki hugging AFO and not devaying him, mwaning if he were to be shown compasion and care, he wouldn't have been decaying stuff or people since he wouldn't want to, but instead they were abandoned, suppressed to be normal, maybe Shigaraki would have never awakened to that mutated quirk if his life would've been different

Shigaraki doesn't have any inherent urge to destroy though, this is clearly explained in the next episode (no spoilers) and evidenced furthermore by how sick and nauseous killing people make him, like when he vomited after decaying a whole crowd of Re-Destro's soldiers.

17:46 I've actually developed IST (basically tachycardia with no apparent reason) because of stress and anxiety. Last year in October I was out with my friends at a cafe, and I felt dizzy, weak, and restless, I felt out of sorts, and short of breath, my watch, which can take my bpms and my stress level, was out of battery so I didn't know what was going at the time, I didn't feel my heart beating particulary fast tbh. My friends acompanied me to the ER, and my friend said "hey, give me your wrist I'll put my apple watch on", his bpms were like 75 as we were sitting down, as soon as he put his watch on me, they jumped to 157. When they called me for triage, and I told them my symptoms and the machine started beeping bcs of my bpms, they put a yellow wrist band on me, got me on a wheelchair and sent me straight for the trauma-shock unit.
They thought I was having a heart attack lol. they couldn't determine what was going on, so they just managed my symptoms. 2 days later i was back with my heart at 244 bpms while resting. I went through multiple tests and they determined it was IST probs bcs of stress lol. I still have it and I have to take medications now.
EDIT: my watch just vibrated, indicating my bpms are at 156 right now LOL
28:48 I disagree deeply. It basically invalidates those of us who went through childhood trauma and didn't become monstrous or abusers. I won't go into my own trauma, but my revenge was to never be abusive, and sadly most of my friends have their own share of trauma (I guess birds of a feather...) and none of them have ever been abusive, they always try to be kinder than those who didn't show them any. There's a reason why I have Endeavor tattooed, and why I will get Hawks eventually too, why those two are my favorite characters. There's also a reason why, while I might sympathize with the LoV, I will never like any of them.
After what was seen of Tenko Shimura's life fully, I really do not think he had a chance. You even acknowledge that some become bitter and vindictive where they'll get revenge no matter what.

But I disagree with the no choice premise, that makes us nothing more than pawns of fate. You make the choice to hurt others, you might hurt someone as a mistake once, maybe even twice, but when it becomes a pattern it's a matter of choice.
As kids I believe the LoVs were set up for failure and had not a choice at the time. I've been taught that once you're an adult you are fully responsible for your actions and it's your job to heal what is broken, no one owes you anything, and if you don't heal what hurts, no one else will.
This is why I have no love for any of the LoV characters, I do not like them, and I will never side with any of them.

After all, how does Tomura Shigaraki overcome what All For One did? He was set up from the start and just couldn't even if he became evil in the end. It was about saying he had no hope of overcoming his trauma as he was not going to be able to do it alone just like the others would. Even with choices, some are that lost and consumed. It's like with Azula and fictional or not, some people in real life are like the League. They're wrong for what they did but this idea that anyone can always take full control of their life is naive.
I think it's funny that every episode of MHA, the thumbnail is just Kenny smirking into the camera Office-Style.

really, it feels like it was ONLY Toga who got a new ability. Shigaraki has spreading decay as a kid after all of the trauma. it was almost like his quirk got nerfed as his memories were repressed. So he wasn't so much gaining a new ability here, just getting full access to his previous power.
This episode and the next might be my favorites. The evolution of Shigaraki's character is cooler than his quirk's evolution. He really goes from a loser who can't achieve much of anything to a proper force to be reckoned with. Really earns his spot as leader.

Kotaro didn't invite his parents to live with them cause his dad/Nana's husband was killed (Gran Torini says in season 3), which is why he left him in an orphanage to go after AFO, and then AFO killed her (he says he did to All Might when they fight also in S3), thought i dont think Kotaro ever found out she died

I’ve watched a lot of dark stuff in anime and live action shows alike, but Shigaraki’s backstory remains the single most disturbing, heart wrenching, and emotionally devastating backstories I’ve ever seen. Not only is it horrifying by itself, but the highly artistic and cinematic way it’s presented really adds to the suspense and horror, and it’s “beautifully” narrated by Shigaraki. Not to mention knowing what follows, knowing how AFO catches and grooms him afterwards… god it’s awful.
Also as many others have pointed out, young Tenko makes it a point to hang out with and include the outcasts in his school, and now he’s the leader of a group of outcasts from hero society
Have you noticed that both the protagonist and antagonist had to overcome someone who had a similar quirk to their counterpart? Deku had to battle Overhaul, who has a touch based quirk like Shigaraki. Shigaraki has to battle Re Destro, who has a strength type quirk that can be valued by percentages, like Deku.

5:45 so something they omitted from the story in this part of the anime (though they will very and I mean very briefly comeback to much later), in the manga just before the League take on Gigantomachia they are without money and try to rob a house. In the house they find and we are introduced to the Creature Rejection Clan, a group who hate people with quirks that make them look non human aka different from everyone else (not unlike some let’s say bed sheet wearing idiotic groups in the real world). It’s at this point you start to learn that there is a very dark and sadly very reflective of real world discrimination that exists in the world of MHA. This is what is alluded to here when Trumpet calls Spinner a shut in as due to his quirk he was harassed and victimised becoming socially isolated which resulted in his villainous views on the world and when I read this I realised every time I saw (and you guys while watching) and laughed at how someone in this series looked within the story there were people who would actively try to hurt and kill those people just for looking weird.

I never thought Shigaraki was evolving here. When his quirk first manifested at 5, he already had the power to kill 3 people at once accidentally just by touching the ground. Shigaraki suppressed those memories, and that mental block suppressed his quirk as well. I always understood this as him unleashing his full power (that he already had within him). Someone correct me if that’s wrong.
The dad is also full trauma thanks his mother who abandoned him and left him a note. Having her final words being replayed over as everything is being destroyed is so messed up.
Season 6 will be the most important
You know what I've always wondered? If quirks are passed down from family and new ones can mutate and manifest into something new based on their families quirks, like with the todoroki, then what kind of quirks did his parents have that lead to the creation of decay? And why didn't his older sister get hers first? Could it have been that he dealt with more stress and trauma that sped up his to come earlier?
Mutation quirks aren't usually based on what the parents or anyone in the family has. Like with Eri. Sometimes a child is just born with a completely different quirk

All For One actually explains this earlier in a previous episode, he says that Decay is a variant Quirk completely unlike any his family manifested previously.
That’s why his family wasn’t able to predict the potential danger or know how to deal with it nothing like Decay had ever emerged
All For One tells Shigaraki in one of the episodes prior that Shigaraki’s is a mutation just like Eri was. In both cases the quirk came from absolutely no one else in the family so it was impossible to prepare for or predict.
Afo stole his original quirk factor and gave him the modified copy of the overhaul quirk removing it's recreation aspect.
This episode reminded me that the dust part was just to make the process look less graphic when animated

Interesting how we’ve seen Deku fight someone who has a similar quirk to Shigaraki and now vice versa with the “super strength” part. It’s cool seeing each other’s growth.

Goated episode
The manga had it slightly gorier, in the anime they don't turn to blood and chunks until after they've fully disintegrated, but in the manga they immediately turn into bloody goop with no stone-like decay effect. I commented early on but holy crap I watched this episode a long time ago and now I realize how close it hits to home 😭
In the manga, ReDestro actually blew off half of Shigaraki's hand, before he grabbed it to finish the job; which is why he was so surprised that Shigaraki could still use his quirk with that hand. Also, the scene were Shigaraki accidentally killed his family with his quirk was even bloodier in the manga.
This episode in particular is one of the ones I most anticipated Montana's reaction towards (and quite a few other reactions). This is straight up horror territory.
And as a manga reader, there is so much more I want to say about this particular event. But I won't.
Yooooooo Montana has gotten better at the gory parts!! OK ok idk I'm so excited it's like seeing your friends watch your favorite anime. I kind want to see them react to Tokyo Ghoul! I know the anime messed it up but when they get to the 12 episode!! That's going to be CRAZY!!!
Shigaraki could have helped with global warning by decaying all garbage generated by humans and in demolition of buildings
Only ones I felt bad for were Shigaraki's Mom, Sister, and Dog.
The rest deserved it.
So, another couple things to keep in mind with the evolutions/upgrades.
The students/good guys have all pretty much been upgrading/evolving their quirks. Kirishima’s Unbreakable, Ida’s Recipro, Ochako’s increase in limits, etc. And that is leaving off Midoriya with OFA growing. It was shown in more episodes, but the heroes are the main perspective of the show, so they get more screen time.
As far as the Villains happening all at once (aside from Dabi), my thoughts onn it are they all started at relatively the same power level relative to their quirk and then have had almost identical experiences, stress, etc since then, so their growth would be very similar, with differences shown strictly in the power of their quirks.
if you pay attention youll see at least his moms hands rumble when he kills her and based on how his powers have worked so far it kinda tells me that the hands that all for one gave him werent actually his family's which kinda makes them that much worse imo

It was amazing when Giantomacia ran through the city destroying everything. Not so funny the second time he does that.
Little Tenko was so cute and reminds like of little Izuku. Tenko was five and still had no quirk which was weird because kids develop a quirk by the age of four. Decay unlocked for him at five; he accidentally declared Mon(dog), Hana(sister), his mom and grandparents. He intentionally killed his dad with the intent to kill after he hit him with sheers. So Montana you have no idea the "opportunity" AFO took with Tenko. When you two find out what that monster did, it'll only make Tenko/Tomura more tragic. I like the graphic the manga is to depict how traumatizing their stories were.
2 things to note: shigarakis fingers were ripped off in the manga, making the reveal of being able to decay with less than 5 fingers make better sense and also this is where shigaraki got his lip scar.
Hmm, might not mean much, and possibly tbe artist style, but in that moment his sister said she would cheer him on as a hero, made me think of deku being excited about heros at that age, even the way their faces looked were super similar, almost like at a point they seemed almost the same in what lit up their eyes, kindred spirits if i pushed it, but certain things stick with you as a child, especially if they change your whole view of life, midoriya had a big one, and tenko had many small things that made the big one happen,
you know how bad the mva adoption is overall when it's this is the best one of the arc and STILL doesn't even hold a candle to how good the manga was
