    Kazumi Totaka’s music for the Wii & Wii Sports itself added so much to the experience. He played to the strengths & calm atmosphere of generic weather / sports programming & the Ui designers perfectly complimented that. The art direction is intentionally sterile in a way that ironically feels so comforting, I also love the simple depth of field effects. I’m all for orchestral soundtracks but I do really feel like the general abandonment of midi has taken a bit of personality out of their games. This is really just an excuse for me to praise Totaka again lol, great video.

    great video as always John! 3 little things: in regards to the concern about the online portion pairing you with AI it only seems happen on your first try of each game, in order to act as an invisible easing in for how actual matches play (edit: i think i was wrong here, you might still end up facing AI in unranked matches). you can move your character using the analogue stick in Volleyball too, where it’s necessary in order to position yourself for blocking spikes and being in the right place to receive. and i think the Bowling definitely flips between 30 and 60fps when it goes from the flyovers of the all the lanes with the other players to the gameplay section. an odd choice that can be quite distracting at times, but at least all the time you’re actually controlling your character is 60! (edit: seems that 3/4 player local multiplayer drops the framerate to 30 too when it moves into splitscreen)

That there’s not more sports/more to them after all this time is weird, but *deeply* confusing that the new Miis have so few options. I’ll still probably pick it up, and be very interested to see how it develops over the next year

    I have a question: can the game be played left-handed (i.e. using the left joy-con in games that use just one joy-con)? I ask because both joy-cons each have a gyro and an accelerometer, yet every motion control game on the Switch that I've played has solely mapped the motion controls to the right joy-con: Mario Galaxy (via 3D All-Stars) and Skyward Sword HD being two such examples.

    Unlike most people, in my family the disc we always had on the wii is the wii sports resort. That game, even tho it had some forgettable mini games, like bike bike racing and such, it still had A LOT of great games. And much better than the originals.
    All the basket variants were fun. My family loved triples.
    My favorite was frisbee golf, wich i hope comes out again
    Table tennis, archery and 100 bowling were also pretty great.
    (Focusing here on the ones we don’t have yet).
    I think they need to bring these back. For me frisbee golf was much more enjoyable than golf always

    • @Joe_334
      @Joe_334 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! Frisbee Golf was one of my favorites too, besides Wakeboarding. My father likes to repair wiis. I just love how my mii can stay saved on a wii mote, and they can be used either on the emulator(dumped from an actual wii console), to another one of the wii he repaired. It's like streetpass before the 3ds ever came out.
      In Switch Sports, if you want to play someone with your character, it isn't possible. Joycons don't hold mii characters, haha.

    This video is a great reminder Michael Pachter was right; we should have gotten a Wii HD in 2010. HD visuals, full uprez/backwards compatibility and forwards compatibility so Wii owners aren’t left in the dust, and with a plain pro controller and motion plus controller in the box, no tablet. Release the Switch a year or two earlier with paired back portable specs and a gpu in the dock and we would have a Switch 2 this year.

      @@livinlikeeli6785 And 16 years old isn't retro. I didn't think the NES was retro when the SNES came out. In fact, people were still buying them up to the N64-era.
      In no way are the 360, PS3, and Wii retro. They're very much part of _this_ generation. It's weird to say that because the Wii U is just a better Wii for the most part and that system was stopped not even 5 years ago.
      I think we have to have an era-shift for me to consider something 16 years old as retro. That's like saying a teenager is retro. He or she's not even a fully-grown adult yet. Wait a few years before calling something retro. 16 years isn't enough.

    • @livinlikeeli6785
      @livinlikeeli6785 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Saturn2888 Well yeah, the NES to SNES was only a 7 year difference. NES to N64 was a 13 year difference. So what's your point? Those are both under 16 years. But 16 years ago, in 2006, PS3 consoles were $600 and still considered one of the cheapest ways to get a blu ray player, the iPhone wasn't invented yet, TH-cam was in its infancy, MySpace was still peaking, Arnold Schwarzenegger was still governor of California, four different presidents between 2006 and now, Call of Duty 4 wasn't out, nor was the first Assassin's Creed. Well now Blu-Ray is dirt cheap, we're on the iPhone 13, there are like mainline 19 Call of Duty games, 12 main series Assassin Creed games with 17 spin-offs. It's a new time, face it!

    • @Saturn2888
      @Saturn2888 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@livinlikeeli6785 I'm talking about an era shift in gaming.
      Would you consider CDs retro? I kinda do, but because they still work, and you can still buy them today, that's a hard sell.
      Land line phones weren't considered retro till long after they became niche. Even though they were popular for 70 years, we didn't call land-line phones retro in the 90s.
      I also asked multiple folks, no one thinks of the Wii as retro. It's not 16 years old; that's when it first launched. It's 4 years old considering the Wii U, and the Switch has enough similar tech that the original Wii is still somewhat relevant.
      We have to first define our terms. This means I need to know what you're classifying as retro and what time lines you propose.
      Are you considering the PS4 retro because consumer ray tracing didn't exist in 2013?
      Is the Xbox One Kinect retro because it's dead tech?
      Is Windows 10 retro because it's based on Windows 95's GUI?

    • @livinlikeeli6785
      @livinlikeeli6785 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Saturn2888 The Wii U to a Wii is like an Xbox One to an Xbox 360, it's simply delusional to call the Wii U just a Wii. It keeps the Wii name alive like the iPhone13 keeps the iPhone brand alive. But the iPhone13 is leaps different from an original iPhone as was a Wii U to a Wii. And yeah the Wii U played Wii games, and the Xbox One played Xbox 360 games, these consoles still defined a newer generation. Or the Ford is still relevant, but a 1908 Ford Model T is still retro. Things use the same name but they also evolve. Using the same name doesn't mean that the entirety of the product's existence is not considered old or retro. The Wii U doesn't suddenly make the Wii newer for it, it keeps the name alive but the console itself wasn't getting any younger. And frankly we've reached a point now. And the PS4 is certainly not retro, it's last gen. PS5 is current gen, PS4 is last gen. So then what's the PS3? Last last gen? No, it's retro now! We're two whole console generations ahead now.

    Wii Bowling was by far my favorite game on the Wii - the fact it sounds like the screwed it up here is a hugely disappointing. But what do you expect, Nintendo has been dumbing down everything they do for a long, long time. BTW, bowling on the XBOX One in Kinect Sports Rivals is really really good, if you happen to have the equipment needed for it. If you got a long living room like I do, with a wood floor, you can basically take a few steps into it and it tracks you nearly perfectly, even catching subtle twists of your wrist. You can be a boring slob and just stand there and swing your arms like an idiot, but if you actually act like it's really bowling, its very fun.
