  • How to specify field of view and wavelengths in a Zemax optical system.
Homework is identical to tutorial 1 and 2 but add a field of view. Can be found at:

after 8 years, still the most helpful zemax video in youtube :) thanks a lot

@ggeeny If you are looking to make a mirror in sequential mode, then put "mirror" in as the glass type. The column on the far right (you have to scroll a long ways), you can input the coefficient of thermal expansion (TCE), to model thermal effects.

@ggeeny If you are looking to model lens / housing interactions for tolerances, this is done through the tolerance editor... a topic for another video I hope to get to in the next year or ten :) For opto mechanical Zemax is not similar to mechanical engineering package like solidworks.

I messed up the standard format sizes for the microscope homework. Really it does not matter for trying to learn how to model a lens in Zemax. (at about 13:33 in the video)
A 1/2" CCD format has an 8.0 mm diagonal. NOT a 9.0 mm diagonal! Thanks to Zhengyu for keeping me honest!!!! This may not sound like much, but when you are designing an F/1, 60 degree FFOV system, a 1 mm image height is a big deal!

@ggeeny Setting material properties for a housing structure is an advance topic... much beyond what I am trying to teach here. This becomes pertinent when you are doing stray light. Unfortunately, I use other software packages for this and I am a novice to such topics in Zemax. But perhaps I misunderstand your question.

Hey, thanks very much for ur tutorials: I'm an Italian PhD and I'm using Zemax to simulate the light over solid objects. I've got a question I hope u can answer to me: how and where can I set the materials of the solids or surfaces such as metals, plastic and whatever is not glass?? Is it possible? Thank you very much.
