- I found my VHS tape of Nathan’s first competition. He competed in Snow Plow Sam! He is just 4 years old in the video. He started in Learn to Skate at age 3 1/2!! Never underestimate where Learn to Skate may lead you.
I am so happy for him and proud of his great success. He is an extraordinary human being on and off the ice. I am truly grateful or the time I spent with Nathan when was was young. Creating a solid and joyful foundation for children in sport is critical to future success. Aside from this my other 2 favorite programs I choreographed for him were Kung Fu Panda. Novice Men and Wall-E Junior Men. Nathan is obviously very very special in terms of talent and perseverance (and probably lots more). But a more general statement is “never underestimate what a kid can do”. Many children are held back because of the limit of the expectations their parents (and others) have for them ‘it’s good enough / he _ she won’t be able to do this’. Not specifically in skating but in many aspects of learning and life. Eliud Kipchoge said: ‘No human is limited’.
Of course they won’t all be Olympic Champions, but a lot of talent is wasted.

Persistant indeed, and lots of determination. What most impressed me was that he was able to rise above his disaster at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games and not allow his failure then to overcome him. For someone who was only 18 then, the public 'shaming' of someone who was touted to be the next superstar on the ice but failed would have been too overwhelming and difficult to bear, and consequently cause one to lose confidence and quit.
So true! Raw talent must be properly nurtured. How lucky we all are that his was.
