very interesting. i wish you would go through the process of setting up the ortur laser and setting up the lightburn software and which lightburn to buy, the dsp license or the gcode one. it looks like a card that goes in the computer? and how to set up the gimp plugin. and.. are there any alternative free softwares that can do the same thing?? i find this fascinating and i am eager to get started.
Sorry if you've found this out already but I'll share just in case someone else has the same questions. The version of Lightburn you need depends on the type of laser you have, more specifically the controller. I'm pretty sure most if not all diode based laser machines use a GCode based controller. Many newer CO2 based lasers use a DSP based controller, some chinese K40 models and most of the 50W "China Blue" and up models. Check the machine specs to be sure though, if it has a Ruida controller you'll need a DSP license. Also there is no specific hardware needed for Lightburn, just a usb cable. The pictures in their shop are examples of the controllers I believe. You can connect a USB camera up to monitor jobs and help with aligning the work piece. They sell a few models on their site but you can use one off of Amazon as well. If you're thinking of getting into lasers or haven't tried/heard of Lightburn yet I highly recommend it. They add new features pretty regularly and the price is really cheap for the ease of use and features you get in my opinion. You can download a fully functional 30 day trial to test it out with your machine as well. Sorry for the long winded reply but hope it helps someone, all the best.

Update, cancelled my order. Looking for a better place to order. Praying to get my money back. After some frustration with GearBest I did some research. They don’t seem to be a very good company. Yes Garret please show us how to burn into the tile itself. First saw you on The Edge of Tech and ended up ordering a Ortur Laser Master 2 15w. Can't wait to get it and try a few tiles. Thanks!
Dude. We've been doing the tiles with color for a while. Most tiles I have seen before you have been black and white. Where did you think to layer the paint. Give credit where it due..
Great question! I would not sell these personally because of copyright issues. You could, however, use photographs from individuals (special event, pets, family photos) and turn them into something cool. There are also quite a few non-licensed photos you could also use. The tiles I used in this video are for my personal use and are not for sale.
Yes, the assholes who "own" the copyrights to these things (govt granted Monopoly) will undoubtedly come after him. What's troubling is the number of people who never think copyright law through. Forget for a moment that these assholes, like Disney, used their muscle to extend copyrights, in essence, indefinitely. Copyrights are limits on what YOU can do with your ACTUAL property in favor of another party. Perhaps a lot of morons have no idea that copyright laws were never originally intended to last virtually forever. It used to be for a LIMITED time. It was that way because our founders understood that by making it last forever it would hurt progress. Forget for a moment that ACTUAL property rights only exist because of scarcity. If there was no scarcity, property rights would be meaningless. That being the case, there is no scarcity when it comes to intellectual property. If this gentleman creates a coaster with hulk's face on it, he has not deprived the copyright owner of any property. Indeed has had increased supply. The argument that somehow he is stealing money from Disney is as stupid an argument as the argument that automobile manufacturers were stealing money from the horse and buggy makers. It is not the govts job to protect your source of income. Don't just bend over. Question this horseshit. Your quick to condemn this guy, you should be condemning your shit government.
@@3DPrintFarm By the way, personal use is STILL a violation of copyright law. Yeah, it is. It really is frightening; people's ignorance of this idiotic law.
Nothing like showing people how to make money on copyright infringement. Should have done an image of someone’s dog or anything else that isn’t copyrighted. Might want to watch selling things that you make with copyrights, trademarks, etc. There’s a very low chance of having any issues, but if you’re actually going to do it for a business, you might want to avoid intellectual property lawsuits.

Came across your video looking for engraving ideas. Must say, your energy and enthusiasm shown in the video has got me wanting to give it a go. I have a 20w Neje, and i will let you know how it turned out. And yep, need to see the laser tile. Once again, a big thanks.
Excellent video & a great money making idea. Another great product idea to add to my Etsy Craft Shop. Would also like to see how you burn the images directly onto the tile, so they are indelible / permanent. Keep up the good work.
Can you remove the tile coating then apply the paints and then clear coat the tile? It would seem to me the paint would adhere better if the tiles own clear coat was removed first by sanding the tile to dull it. Excellent video.
Video is great... Thanks for sharing this. And please share some more information about the machine like, the life of tool, which types of materials can be engraved and how to increase the engraving area by doing some modifications if it's possible.

Hi great video. Do you have a video on how to add your laser to Lightburn? I’ve just bought a Neje Master 2 and can’t get the laser to fire when I press start. Many thanks 😊
Just stumbled onto your channel because I just purchased a Lulz it Mini 2. But OMG! I had never heard of the desktop Laser! Was only familiar with glowforge and similar devices. Yes! I want to know how you etched The Rock on that tile! BTW, you just got another sub!
Thanks loads, i had not long ago got a cheep 80mmx80mm 3000m carver from bang goods, though i would have an upgrade from the other one i had, i love this idea, plenty of older people round my way that would love to have family photos etched in a tile, being a wood worker i could make a small wood frame that lifts this up and sits the tile in nice.
If you make multiple color layers in spray paint, can you set different burn percentages for different colors? And with that thought, can you use primary colors to mix into any color you want with dithering?
Interesting idea. Have you tried using more than two colors and then varying the intensity of the beam to burn through one layer of paint in some areas and burn through 2 or more layers to add multicolor to the tile? Also can probably make larger pictures by using more than 1 tile to create a type of mosiac.
Thank you for this video. I just bought a laser engraving machine and I asked the company I bought it from asking what do I software do I need to use their machine. They told me I don’t need anything. I was like oh their machine runs on Jedi mind tricks? Interesting that is. Lol. Glad I have an IDEA of what to do since I am new to this type of thing. AIR ASSIST.. will reduce “Blacks” (but on some Co2 Lasers you will need air assist to keep lens clean)
For Co2...starting point 30-50mm/sec @ 20-50% power
Do a test tile of 30 x 30 mm scans
Some CO2 ,s need air to keep lens clean
DO NOT USE GREYSCALE
1...Prepare Photo with a photo Editor....(LightBurn now has photo prep under shape properties)
2....set size of photo to size you will laser on tile
3....set DPI to around 318 (this really depends on the size of your Laser Beam)
4....clean white tile with Lacquer thinner
5....paint tile / Glass Flat White..allow to dry (one light coating should do)
6....fine focus Laser beam
7....pick Image Mode to use ( I prefer Jarvis Dither and have had some success with Stucki Dither.....Available with LightBurn software....this preference takes some trial runs and documentation ....if preDithered use LightBurn “Passthrough”
8...for my 2.5 watt diode..speed 1200 mm/min...power 85% (my S-value in LightBurn =255) Line Interval = 0.085
9 takes approximately 50-70 minutes to complete
10....clean off all paint with Lacquer Thinner...
11...place felt pads on bottom to prevent scratching

How to Focus Diode
Prepping Photos to Laser
Basic Steps
Dithering is done when converting to 1-bit black and white from either greyscale (8 bit black and white) or color. Dithering is one of the last steps. Here's a typical flow
1) usually resize for your DPI and finished engraving dimensions. DPI is based on your beam size and burn radius (upgraded optics usually as small as 0.08mm, stock optics more like 0.10mm) anything more you will be overlapping lines and quality will actually get worse
2) convert from color to greyscale
3) Unsharp mask (to give it pop)
4) Adjust tonal curve (because mid-tones do not process well in engravings
5) Brightness/Contrast
6) Convert to 1 bit (dither)
7) Process in Lightburn as passthrough
These are the basic steps, and each photo is different, you need to develop the laser "eye" and know what looks good when finished. It takes time and practice. Some photos just won't engrave well, due to limited quality.
I didnt think this would be suitable to laser onto as I didnt think shiny objects were suitable and would damage the laser?
Very cool Hulk

Man, that was great!! Just go for got my FIRST laser printer and my Tech Support guy said I should watch your video. I really owe him one for this. Please do the part 2 showing how to engrave on to the tile surface. This is a no-brainer instant subscribe to channel moment.
Please show us more. This was awesome!!
Im super excited to get my laser. Doing as much research as possible to make and sell stuff like these
Looks really interesting, please show more. Cheers, Joe
Thank You very much for the video. We are looking to invest in a lazer soon. I would love to see a video on how to engrave into a tile. Or, any other ideas... Thank You
I love this concept . Where can I get the printer and how can one do multi colored prints on tiles, wood or metal using this laser printer
This is awesome. Have you ever tried a sepia/tan paint as the background color? I wonder if it would make black and white images look vintage.
Part 2 please , looks great!!!!
He will put you thru!! He's a wonderful person I'm making $700 every week!!
All thanks to zeelient on Instagram
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing and keep up your great work!
I'm sold, first video I come across looking into desktop lasers nice.
Loved the first video of the Hulk.....yes, please do another of burning directly onto the tile. Thank you much!!
Interested in the burned-in image on tile (no paint). Can you do that video? Thanks
Garrett, What a inspiration video, great idea! Yes, I want to see a follow up to that video and any video with new idea in the future. I love your work. I post your videos on the Photon to new people starting in the hobby on some of my facebook group like Titan Forge Miniature. Thx again for the great work and Congrat for reaching more then 10 000 member.

I started doing this a while back when I got my Glowforge. Your tiles look great!
@Bobby K What speed and power are you using on your GF?
@@Bigsease30 Using the Silver MacBook Pro setting works well with white tiles.
Hi great video. Do you have a video on how to add your laser to Lightburn? I’ve just bought a Neje Master 2 and can’t get the laser to fire when I press start. Many thanks 😊
Subscribed & following. Would love to see more, maybe a little tutorial on lightburn.
Just stumbled onto your channel because I just purchased a Lulz it Mini 2. But OMG! I had never heard of the desktop Laser! Was only familiar with glowforge and similar devices. Yes! I want to know how you etched The Rock on that tile! BTW, you just got another sub!
Hi great video I have a quick question can I use the desktop laser indoor??? I don't have much space at home, Thanks !!
WOW that is impressive im planning to begin laser engraving need help to start thanks
Yes that burning on tile is great
Thanks loads, i had not long ago got a cheep 80mmx80mm 3000m carver from bang goods, though i would have an upgrade from the other one i had, i love this idea, plenty of older people round my way that would love to have family photos etched in a tile, being a wood worker i could make a small wood frame that lifts this up and sits the tile in nice.
Ok!! You definitely have to do a vid on the tile burn!! Awesome!!
Great Information. Is there a rotary option for these desktop lasers?
If you make multiple color layers in spray paint, can you set different burn percentages for different colors?
And with that thought, can you use primary colors to mix into any color you want with dithering?
Tnks to zeelient on Instagram! I'm making up to $700 a week
yep I like this. How much was the printer and programs to run it.
Cool video. Thinking about using one for my sheaths.
I can’t wait to get some products made for gifts.
Super cool ! Would love to see more things with the laser
Great video demo. Love the details you provide for the inexperienced person like me.
