- EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #69: WITHERNSEA
Withernsea is a seaside resort town on the Holderness Coast of the East Riding of Yorkshire, and forms the focal point for a wider community of small villages, some we’ve already seen
It’s a typical seaside town with some nice beaches and plenty of amusement arcades. It’s even got the traditional flock of seagulls waiting to nick your fish and chips on the seafront
It’s most famous landmark is its lighthouse which is no longer active but now houses a museum to 1950s actress Kay Kendall. Aside from her, Withernsea has had a few other notable residents
It’s the birthplace of Jazz musician Kenny Baker, and footballer Stuart Gray. Dick Davis, the English-American poet, teacher, and award-winning translator of Persian poetry, grew up in Withernsea during the 1950s.
In more recent times, The Ruby Red Performers, a group of dancers who appeared on the 9th series of Britain's Got Talent in 2015, are from Withernsea
Withernsea sits close to the line of the Prime Meridian which crosses the coast to the north-west of the town. As such, there are a few references to it here including the Meridian Centre
Once upon a time, you could catch a train to Withernsea from Hull. In Victorian times, Withernsea provided a cheap and convenient holiday for thousands of workers in Hull.
The railway line has now gone, but Withernsea is still thriving, and in the summer months, it still welcomes lots of tourists. Let’s go check it out!

Withernsea is the best
I like your efforts. You show my hometown in a good light it deserves. Thank you. P.S. The Blue Plaque that belongs to Corporal Ken Banks is my Uncle Ken's. He used to live @ that house before he died fighting at the 2nd Battle of El Alemein in North Africa, 1942. R.I.P. Uncle Ken.
i showed this to all my friends!!
The road from Hull to With' was my late husbands favourite biking road. Sweeping bends, clear sight lines, hardly any street furniture. If you do slide off you mostly just get muddy and wet in the ditches . But shhh. Don't tell anybody. Carry on to Hornsea and Brid for a lovely tootle round back to Hull via Driffield and Beverley.
Never been, but if Hornsea is anything like this, I'm sure we will love it :)
@@TheVillageIdiot don't miss the Mr Moos icecream ,on sale at all high class confectioners and cafes . Lol. Gorgeous.
Amazing content
amazing video
love the video
I love your video
Really enjoyed watching this Andy. Withernsea is our happy place and we have a caravan here on Withernsea Sands and come most weekends. We live in Stocksbridge, Sheffield where you have already visited as I noticed the video a long time back.
Thanks for what you do, really like to watch all videos you upload.
Stocksbridge...that was a while ago haha. Not as many hills in Withernsea, can see why you like it :D
Cheers Andy for the review pal. I’m off to Roos just inland of withernsea for my wife’s 60th. We’re spending five days there. Sure we will get over for fish n chips. 👍🏼
At brownies in Withernsea they had girls from Roos there!
I used to live in queen street many years ago when Tesco was an old folks home!
I remember when the Meridian centre was the withernsea superstore many years ago!
I used to go to the brownies and guides in the church hall near the st nicholas church many years ago!
Where my mum and dad was born. Still have a lot of family there. Had a holiday every year there upto about 18. Omg. 11:10 your outside my nans bungalow before she passed away.valley Gardens used to be a crazy golf course.
Yes it did many years ago!
I never realised Withernsea was so popular as a resort, can see it's pretty well kept and lots of amusements /pubs and parks. Had a friend in London who was from here, only photo I saw was of a very stormy sky looking out to sea! He came back to live here, seeing the house prices I'm not surprised! Wouldn't get a 1-bed flat for £140,000 nowadays in London! Lots of space and fresh air too. Another friend from Hornsea, a few from Hull. Most came to London for work.
We've grown to love it now, after going a few times. Seriously underrated
Another excellent video Andy we were in Withernsea last month lovely place.
It really is! It's starting to become a favourite little go to place on the coast for us. We've been twice now
Its strange not seeing the Humberside signs in the town!
Congratulations on an informative, well edited & produced video. I appreciate the work & research that you put into each of your videos. Bravo 👏
Yes I saw me house
In 1970 I lived in a very dilapidated old - and small - forge in a little hamlet a few miles from Withernsea: rented for £4 a week. Withernsea was the closest place to buy groceries and I recall a run down little town with no large shops and entertainments; a tiny cinema which appeared to be converted from two terraced houses, and the best shop in town ( for me) was the second hand goods and junk shop right opposite the beach in the centre. It has certainly changed greatly since that time. Hornsea was much more up market in housing and shops. Golden Sands has increased in size ( greatly! ) and, according to "Yorkshire Rose", is now housing immigrants.
Some excellent memories for people in Withernsea it seems
That used to be nice did the golden sands chalet park many years ago!
I remember when Withernsea had Dees and Jacksons in Queen Street!
Brilliantly put andy (that segment at the end) ,enjoyed this episode as its my home town. Keep up the great work 👍
Thanks 👍
Great job 👍 loving this ghost town 😊
Thank you 😁
If you know where to look, there is a section of the railway platform still extant at the edge of a carport. Contractors working on redevelopments kindly repaired and rehabilitated this section from left over spoil.
I first stood on that platform nearly 70 years ago in the age of steam...
I see Holderness hardware is still there!
You'll see more of those plaques especially coming back towards Hull, the narration is top notch as usual
Cheers Graham!
@Yorkshire wanderer4695
What's the furthest you've seen Reckits chimney from outside of Hull ?
King street is king
I remember the off licence at the corner of King Street many years ago!
No one told me they had pulled down what was the old infant school!
Great episode Andy. It was a real nostalgia trip for me as I spent my 6 High School years travelling on the bus to Withernsea school. Great fun being a 6th former and being able to sneak off down the seafront for chips and wasting your pocket money in amusement arcades. We'd also spend our pennies in the long gone Woolworths record department or my favourite sweet shop (not sure if still there) was Rock Bobs and you could buy big gobstoppers shaped like sea pebbles amongst the jars and jars of sweeties. The newsagents next to the lighthouse was also pretty good for sweets. Glad you had a fun time there :)
Seems a much more popular place than I initially gave it credit for. Mind you, having walked around it all, I can see why. Who needs abroad holidays? :D
@@TheVillageIdiot It's good that you say it's not as faded as I thought it had become when I went back about 7 years ago :)
I remember the Brown's shop in Hull Road!
It's bliss, I'm so glad that I live here
Its a minor injuries place in withernsea thats open Monday 9/5 isnt it?
Thank you I enjoyed that
Very welcome
He has one of those voices that is easy to listen to...
Me you mean? Thanks! :D
@@TheVillageIdiot I dunno, it's just a crisp clean sounding tone you have. Agreeable to listen to. Some commentators, even famous ones, do less well. I'm sure your recording gear is decent, which helps of course. Can't place your accent though. Not Hull....
Lincoln
@@TheVillageIdiot That explains it. I knew you didn't have my coarse Hull accent. I've lived in Australia for 50 years and still have it. I'm a Yorkshireman, we don't part with bugger all....
Aldi is more suited to withernsea than proudfoots was!
loved the video!
Thank you!!
@@TheVillageIdiot Your welcome
