- In this video I will take you through what I think is the Top 30 Australian Songs of All Time. I am fully expecting disagreements here so please feel free to share. There are a list of honourable mentions near the end, so have a look there if your favourite song doesn't show up.
Here is a spotify playlist of all the songs (honourable mentions included)
open.spotify.c...
"The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" is SUCH a famous song, covered by nearly everyone, regarded widely as one of the greatest songs about wartime ... veterans all over the world hold it in their hearts ...
No Little River Band in the Top 30 is criminal
I thought they were shyte, pure US radio fodder. But "Help Is On Its Way" ROCKED. Fantastic tune.
The compiler is a "Lonesome Loser" (Just Kidding!)
My main criticism would be the lack of so many acts from the 60s and 70s. Surely the Seekers would have to be on this list, international trailblazers for Aussie music, just so iconic. Then the Bee Gees, Olivia Newton-John, Helen Reddy, Air Supply, the Little River Band, Russel Morris, the Mixtures, New World and Kevin Johnson. Maybe even Frank Ifield needs a mention. Great to see the Easybeats here, that song still sounds great today! Thanks for the chart, a lot of fun. PS Of course number 1 should be Daddy Cool's Eagle Rock such a phenomenon at the time.
You forgot spectrum, Billy Thorpe, the la de das, Merv Benton, Clapton ,there are so many.
Evie? Anyone???…🤦♂️ ohhhhh evie… 😢
evie is in the honorable mentions section@@ccronk
I suspect that our moderator here is quite young and hasn't discovered vinyl!!!
Eagle rock - still played at weddings today, even if it is with all the guys dropping their daks!
I enjoyed this list, another honourable mention could have been I still call Australia home, it always tugs at my heart strings.
I loved this list. I actually did not know most of the bands were from Australia.
Educational for me. since I'm not an Aussie. SO thank you. I live and learn. But as a foreigner, I have to stick with I'ts because I love you and ... The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, the greatest anti-war song ever written.
As a Brazilian growing up in the 80's your list didn't ringed a bell so much. Specially on the top 10. I touch my self and the Australian crawl one were bigger here then any top 10 except for the men at work
No Johnny O’Keefe? Seriously, any list of best Australian popular music that doesn’t include the wild one has no credibility.
No Bee Gees? No Olivia? Regardless of what you think of the music (and I rate them both in their genres), they were both global giants. Same for Helen Reddy. I am Woman was a monster.
You can argue that Master’s Apprentices should be there in place of Vance Joy etc, but the omission of the above four is unforgivable.
In my humble Scottish opinion: It's Because I Love You and The band Played Waltzing Matilda. World class songs.
"The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" is SUCH a famous song, covered by nearly everyone, regarded widely as one of the greatest songs about wartime ... veterans all over the world hold it in their hearts ...
Oh wow, I would probably change the order a little bit, and maybe change the songs of one or two artists, but basically, this list is the soundtrack of my life!
thank you...after 34 years visiting Australia remember great times
As a fellow Australian music lover, I do agree with the choices you've chosen being classic hits when looking at music channels on Foxtel like Channel V and Max which will be missed
I agree
Good list. As a child of the 80s we get caught up in the nostalgia of it all, after all was a great time for Oz Rock. But we are a little blind to recognise some more contemporary stuff that is superb. I’d argue that many of the songs are not the best from the respective bands but thats kind of immaterial. Would love to see Eagle Rock and Because I Love You in there, as well as Alone with You Tonight from The Sunnyboys and my guilty pleasure the Bad Moon Rising cover from The Reels!
The entirety of Since I left you should be on here
Top 30 Australian songs of all time....depends of your criteria? Sales, chart position, lyrics, politics.
For example.
A song like Great Southern Land by Flowers ( Icehouse ) sounds very Aussie, while Can't get you out my head by Kylie doesnt. Though I like both!
Personally I would have had Sherbet rather than just Daryl, maybe Howzat🤷♂️
Other bands I would have liked to see are...
The Reels, Quasimodos Dream
The Sunnyboys, Alone with You
Skyhooks, Living in the 70s
Hoodoo Gurus, My Girl...
Or maybe something newer by
You Am I, Birds of Tokyo, Savage Garden, Sia.....soooo many to choose!
As you pointed out at the end, there were lots you missed out! 🤷♂️🙏
Love the list, I thought eagle rock would make it for sure! I do think it will be super interesting to see in 30 years if artists like Flume, Tame Impala, Rufus Du Sol, Gang of Youths, Sia, etc etc will be held in the same light as these songs are today. Maybe they will never get the esteem of the previous generations but I think its just something that takes time and nostaliga to really kick in.
Eagle Rock was literally my last cut song on the list. Its on the honourable mention list of course though.
Time will tell on the newer Australian artists. That is why the songs at the top of the list are older songs. Those that have stood the test of time hold more prestige in my opinion. I still wanted to represent some newer aus songs in this video though and I picked the ones that I think will/have aged well so far. If I had a bone to pick with Eagle Rock, it would be that over time the song has not taken too seriously, which i guess is why it just missed out.
I agree Eagle rock should have made the list for sure
@@solitudeausmusic It time does tell over the years such compilations should not be termed as "Greatest of all time" While I recall many songs from the 60's and onwards I would often forget ones like "Road to Gundagai" which is literally an anthem of this nation.
Nothing by TISM!? Not even in the honourable mentions...
WHATAREYA???
Who are TISM?
@@JonnyDredd Just a bunch of wankers... or are they yobs? I'm not sure...
@@JonnyDredd a band
um a kiwi never heard of this band though but hey great learn something new off youtube every day
@JonnyDredd Sorry I wasn't sure if you were joking haha. They're a fun band, brilliant, but not to be taken seriously.
Thanks for taking the time to make this. Commenting purely to boost the algorithm.
Thanks :)
Great southern lands is number 1 in my opinion
True Blue to me is my all-time fav Australian song but I would also add I Am Australian by The Seekers, though I fully understand that this is not all about just Australian culture in music still I feel a lot is in there and it's also cool to see them in the honorable mentions.
Sport, The Seekers pushed The Beatles off number 1 at the height of their powers, had worldwide number1 and hits. They were more successful than any band on this list except Acca Dacca!
Pretty good list! Thanks.
Hello 👋 how are you doing?
Number 15 “am I ever gonna see the biff again” -reg reagan 2004
Missing: Georgie Girl (The Seekers - head & shoulders above many of these), Turn Up Your Radio (Masters Apprentices), Ever Loving Man (The Loved Ones). But mostly I love your choices.
No Little River Band songs! Have you heard about the "Lonesome loser?" or Reminiscing?
Not even an honurable mention. If you haven't heard of the LRB, listen to the songs I listed above.
Hang On Help is on Its Way
Those aren't bad, but not quite Top 30 material. I always felt "Cool Change" had a depth to it that many of their other hits were lacking.
Thank you for the effort you've put into this great video! Along with some other commenters, I can think of some artists and songs that might have deserved a place on your list. Among them would be: "Stranded" by The Saints, "The Real Thing" by Russell Morris, any of the Seekers' massively influential songs, "Massachusetts" or "To Love Somebody" and anything from the movie Saturday Night Fever by the Bee Gees, and something by Kylie Minogue (the highest-selling female Australian artist of all time).
I was with you until you mentioned the singing budgie.
GOD - My Pal
The Saints - I’m Stranded
Blueline Medic - Making the Nouveau Riche
Radio Birdman - Aloha Steve & Dano
The Living End - Pictures in the Mirror
The Easybeats - She’s So Fine
King Cannons - Take the Rock
The Rumjacks - Light In My Shadow
The Currency - 888
AC/DC - Highway to Hell
Rose Tattoo - We Can’t Be Beaten
Mach Pelican - Dance in Chicago
It's perfectly clear what James Reyne is saying in Reckless. I'd easily replace long way to the top with thunderstruck- but nearer no.1.
Where are you getting your top Australian hits info from?!.
Having only 1 song per artists instantly turns your list in to your top 30 Australian artists not just songs.... at which you lost me when you had Living End at 29
Great list. Proud to be Aussie.
Always 🇦🇺
Great list, very subjective of course. Difficult task to narrow down to just 30!
I would have had Paul Kelly much higher, but it's your video and your opinion and you've done an excellent job.
No Olivia Newton-John on this list? Physical deserves a spot, or is she not enough Austrailan in your mind?
This has to be among the quirkiest top 30 ever!
Not even an honourable mention for Olivia Newton John?
Great southern Land best song ever
Any top Aussie songs list without I'll Be Gone and Gypsy Queen is a list I'm never going to agree with.
The real Top 30 in no particular order, Eagle Rock, Khe Sahn, Most People I know, Because I love You, Long way to The top, World Of Our Own, Georgie Girl, Never Find Another You, Carnival is Over, Living in the 70's, Lygon St, You're The Voice, Help Is on the way, Highway to Hell, Real Thing, Golden Miles, The Horses, Shout, What About Me, Friday On My Mind, Sorry, Women, Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face, Flame Trees, Shine, Reminiscing, Sounds Of Then, Boys in Town, Throw your Arms, What About Me
No Dragon, No Bee Gees, No Olivia, Helen. Not even The Saints I'm Stranded. That's easy top 20
While I know what you’re saying about who are not on there Dragon, is not an Australian band
Dragon are Kiwis.
@catto66 Marc Hunter and the band moved to Sydney and now they're based here. They've basically been adopted as Aussies like Crowded House. They fit on both the NZ and Aussie Lists imho
acdc - long way to the shop for a sausage roll
I agree with a lot of these but I’m miffed there weren’t more women on the list! Not even one in the honorable mentions! ONJ, Tina Arena, Renee Geyer, Delta. Also where are the BeeGees, Seekers? Agree with other’s suggestions too!
Forgive me, but Tina Arena, Renee Geyer, Delta ... ? Seriously? Is just being female enough?
Helen Reddy I could support (greatest SONG, remember).
I completely agreed with the list as presented. Until I read the comments and of course, the Seekers, Russell Morris, Billy Thorpe etc. but they are all brilliant pieces of music.
I totally agree with most of your picks, but would have had them in a different order. I cannot believe you left out the number 1 Australian anthem by the Seekers - I am Australian, and Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs - Poison Ivy, Mental as Anything - Live It Up, Masters Apprentices - Its because I Love You
Masters Apprentices "Living In A Child's Dream"
Torn - Natalie Imbruglia
Working Class Man was a cover of an American song, and Australians never fought at Khe Sanh.
Australian bombers supported the Americans throughout the entire seige flying close air support missions. So we did participate in the battle, but we had no ground infantry in the battle.
The song is also not meant to be about the battle, it's written by a veteran of the war and his experiences after returning home.
Also, Working Class Man isn't a cover. The guy who wrote it, Johnathan Cain, never played it. Jimmy Barnes played it first.
Though, I couldn't find any info saying it was written years before Jimmy met Johnathan either, it appears it was written for Jimmy Barnes to sing.
You can't put Evie in the top 30? Completely devalues the list.
it was on the honourable mentions if that is any consolation
Some good songs, but a lot of boring stuff and missing some very famous groups. Not my cup of tea but how could you ignore the seekers, Olivia newton john, bee gees, Helen reddy, the saints, the go betweens (they even have a major bridge in Brisbane named after them!), Tim Minchin and the XL Capris !
The list is rubbish. So many great Australian songs. Mate, just call it your favourite Australian songs.
I guess this is a reflection of your age rather than a look into the top of Australian music.
Yes, I am younger than 30, but I definitely tried to put my age bias aside. Only 5 of the included songs were released after the year 2000 and the entire top 10 are songs that have stood the test time. I deliberately put emphasis on these types of songs higher in the list, because in my opinion the longer a song stands a test of time the greater it becomes. So therefore the newer songs were lower in the list and the older songs were higher in the list. By your comment I'm assuming one of two things. You only watched the first 5 songs, or you just don't think anything that has come out post 2000 is worth your time. Fair enough if that is your opinion, but its not one that I agree with.
@@solitudeausmusic Thank you for your timely response. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.
You are correct to say we do not agree and that is ok. Music often creates differing opinions. A differing opinion just comes down to personal choice and/or personal taste.
Thank you for confirming the correctness of my original comment. Age inevitably plays a part on us all when it comes to musical tastes. That's just the way it is, sorry if you felt any negativity in that regard.
Also, both of your assumptions were incorrect.
1/ I did watch and listen to the full video
2/ I did not mention 'post 2000' or any other date.
Perhaps I had also made an incorrect assumption when I read the video's tittle. I assumed the top 30 Aussie songs of all time was going to be an historical view of Australia's music progression rather than a personal viewpoint. Either way, no harm done.
Thanks for the original upload. Cheers.
@@graeme02 fair enough, good thoughts :)
I'm guessing that your age is maybe 25 to 30! The Real Thing, Most People I Know, Eagle Rock and Home on a Monday should have been near the top. Anyone that suggests that the top songs might change in the future is surely forgetting that these songs don't just disappear as they'll still be around and still be up there.
I am Australian- The seekers
All the Aussies
👇👇
Music is always subjective, but maybe it should be the top corporate approved commercial music.
Amazing, I'm Australian
Hello Michelle 👋 how are you doing
Yes
"Crowded House is an Aussie Band"... It's like saying Queen is an American Band.
Two of the three were Aussie. Formed in Melbourne.
"the Drovers Boy" " Better" "I Was Only 19" I think a many of your picks were on a far lower level than those three.
Granted, I'm American.
A few reasonable songs. Nowhere near approaching The Beatles, The Stones, Pink Floyd, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Clash, The Cure, Genesis, Roxy Music... the list goes on. Putting Australian music beside British music, is a bit like putting a very good amateur English cricket team beside the Australian national cricket team. ;-)
My thoughts too, Aus music falls in the back to what European or American music brought us all. Seems like your village musicians.
I keep thinking about this stupid comment. There is only one country that could possibly "compete" with British music, and Australia wasn't it - big deal. Get over it. We can't beat you at soccer, either.
I spend a lot of thought and effort defending and championing Brit music when the RRHOF nominations are made each year, and I think my taste in Brit music is fairly extensive, but I just hate this BS.
You missed a very great song that many will say should become our new National Anthem.
The Seekers, I Am Australian
Not including Live It Up by Mental As Anything? Just wow.
midnight oil wedding cake island song
Beds are Burning was total rubbish song, actually everything they did after Wedding Cake Island was rubbish...
No Skyhooks?
Riptide is my favourite
Should be renamed "my personal top 30 Australian songs of the last 30 years". Definitely NOT Top 30 Aussie songs of all time.
it's a long way to the shop if you want a sausage roll.
Well done for putting out your list, it certainly has created discussion.
If every Aussie put out their Top 30 , no list would be the same
As l say, Opinions are like arseholes....everyone has one.
I'm American. All of our music is better, even though half of it is from the UK., and you guys.
Australian music you described here is still so minor and even amateuristic to what the whole world brought in music. To me some good songs but the country needs to level up for sure to make an impact.
Nick caves top song, would have been, with Kylie Minogue "The rise song"..don't get me wrong,I ❤️Nick Cave😊
Yea, there were some good songs on the list, but, for me, the two biggest omissions were "Song for Darwin" by Ayres Rock and "Black 'n' Blue" by Chain.
Air Supply, Savage Gardens, Natalie Imbruglia, Icehouce etc..
My list would be very different.
Down under in Australia 🇦🇺 g’day mate do you come down in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
Sorry my fav remains Most people I know think that I’m Craaaaaaaazy
Nice list but just goes to show how music is a very personal thing.
Playing Jimmy and Cold Chisel is cheating :(
You’re voice sounds like daily dose of internet
Overall pretty damn good list. I might disagree with some of the relative rankings and some of the artists/songs, but I think if you surveyed the entire Australian population, the end result wouldn't be much different to this. I particularly liked and agreed with your song choices for multiple hit artists like These Days vs My Happiness, I Touch Myself vs Pleasure and Pain, To Her Door vs 12 other Paul Kelly songs etc. 👍👍
Edit: have to also submit my formal disapproval for not having Eagle Rock in the final list 😉
2nd edit: I reckon Live it Up by Mental as Anything deserved at least a shortlist - still holds up with my 20 something mates through to my parents. Again, great list though 👍
Thanks for the feedback. Yes, Eagle Rock was difficult to leave out. Another commenter mentioned that song too and as i responded to him, it was probably 31 on the list. Live it up is another great song i hadnt mentioned in this list and i like the suggestion.
@@solitudeausmusichow did you come to the choices you made? You’ve clearly missed so many better songs in this list… Evie by Stevie Wright was the biggest export yet didn’t make your top 30? Triple J and Triple M have it inside their top 20 countdowns of Aussie greats religiously 🤷♂️
No Painters & Dockers?
Great work.
just dusted off the cricket bat… favourite or best ?
*Rose
sia - chandelier
lol
U know Aurora are going to have 4 concerts in Australia in March. Im going to see Aurora in Oslo 17.11😊
What about Waltzing Matilda? I would have thought that would be a top 3.
only counting contemporary music, as stated at the beginning of the vid :)
@@solitudeausmusic my bad
Only one Chisel, is not enough. Although you did choose the right one.
Only one acca-dakka is not enough. Long way is a classic, so is Thunderstruck, and several others.
Only one Midnight Oil. Beds are burning. US Forces. Short Memory. Come on!
Eagle Rock, good. Solid Rock. Good.
What about The Seekers? Maybe it doesn't work on modern equipment, but back in the '60s, on the equipment then, Judith Durham's voice would grab you by the ears and hold you. Early Robert Plant / Led Zep ~ had a similar electric quality. Something about that voice just touched your soul, grabbed your attention. Same with Jimmi Barnes.
You'd think there'd be one Skyhooks song. Not sure which one, but ~ Horror movie?
I wasn't a wild fan of the Gibb brothers, but they did sell a hell of a lot of records. Same with Dr Hook.
What about INXS? You're going to mention Kyle, you better mention Mr Hutchence.
How about the very first Australian rock star? How about the son of the Mayor of Bondi Beach? How about Johnny O'Keefe?
"You make me want to SHOUT!" That bloke could pump out some serious energy, let me tell you! The song, the musical style, was so different to anything else going on at that time, at least in Australia. I think it was inspired by Chuck Berry and Johnnie be good.
He did say only 1 song per artist
You can't fkn leave Jessie's Girl and Dance Monkey out of an all time Aussie top 10 and expect cnt's to take you seriously. Now apologise. Love to share thanks.
Jimmy Barnes bee gees
Hard choices picking the best 30. Im for modern and classic but how does eagle rock not make the list? All the boys in town was the Divinyls song to choose.
No Baby Animals or Little River Band?
So many better songs left out. I'd have had You're the Voice at number 1.
Jacko - I'm An Individual (1985)
You can always try out the top 20 Aussie country music
great southern land should be lower imo, but otherwise an alright list
also khe sanh is defo up there
Stupid List. The Seekers: I am Australian !!!
Crowded House is a Kiwi band, not Aussie
How about the Air Supply?
who?
@@georgebarnes8163Air Supply. Very big late 70s early 80s.
Australian songs...surely that should mean songs only "written" by Australian's right? Working Class Man, You're the Voice and Horses all written by non Australians.
20. silverchair what a song and memory!
Goanna?
Where is "Golden Miles" by Healing Force, certainly in my mind the no. 1 Aussie song of all time but must certainly be in anyones top 10.
I feel like maybe it's not as well known now as it was years ago... maybe it's all depending on environment but I think I only heard about the song through a forum
