Willie Stargell had a tremendous arm while playing left field for the Pirates. He had a quick, powerful, and accurate overhand release. His arm was comparable to Clemente's. I was fortunate to see both of them play at Forbes Field.
Great collection over his career. I was behind the Phillies dug out when he hit a homer over dead center fence for a grand slam. Clutch. Definitely the leader on the 79 team and series MVP.
Pops was: 'The Black Babe Ruth'. You could almost hear the baseball screaming after it left the pitcher's hand and saw Willie getting ready to swing! LOL!! A great man, and a real gentle giant. God Bless you Willie, and thank you for the memories. May you RIP.

I saw Willie hit the deepest home run ever at Montreal’s Olympic stadium one Saturday afternoon. He absolutely dominated the expos for what looked like a decade ! I am convinced that the expos would have won a few pennants if it wasn’t for Willie . And those expos teams were stacked with talent!
...especially that 1979 team that lost the NL East by 2 games against the eventual WS champs the Bucs... Interestingly, the next two seasons, the Expos also lost out to the eventual WS winner (by 1 game against the Phillies in 1980, and the NLCS in that split-season, strike-shortened 1981 on the Rick Monday HR that propelled the Dodgers to their WS win)
You seen dat one, it was measured at 535 ft. Strawberry 525 isn't a record, at first they measured the ball over 600ft, change it to 525. In my eyes I seen Strawberry hit several longer in shea. Longest as yankee was Tampa Bay which they had great video unlike Montreal homerun it dented the steal poll in right center. Joe Torre called it longest ball he ever seen hit. The ball was traveling like 100 mph in such high distance.

I didnt get it and so asked my dad "where'd it go?" "ITS OVER THE ROOF!" . BTW.. Somebody named Babe hit his 714th HR, playing for the NL Boston Braves, over the same Forbes Field RF roof.

In the early 70’s, 73-74 or so, I was in the Club section of Atl-Fulton County Stadium. This was the very middle of the ring’d stadium. Our Norcross Pop Warner baseball team had won a very big game and the coach bought all the players a ticket to the Braves/Pirates game. I had just bought a huge Dr. Pepper and a bag of pistachios when Willie came to the plate. He whistled a ball straight down the 1st base line foul but I quickly determined it was coming towards my seat. I stood, dropped my drink and pistachios, and held up my hands to nab this baseball. The ball scorched through my hands, bounced off the plexiglass windows behind me and fell down to the field level seats where it landed in the lap of a man who had a raincoat folded on his lap. My hands were numb the rest of the day and I was thirsty. Heckuva drive to hit that ball so far just missing the upper deck. I’ll never forget it.

Stargell hit what might have been the longest HR in Vet history to that spot, and whenever I think of how high up that was, I can't imagine anyone hitting a ball that far.

Yeah the pre-bat swings were terrific...
