    4th orders and 6th orders don’t have more output than ported boxes , they just provide that output in a different bandwidth. In my opinion 6th orders have the best bandwidth but it’s not worth the size unless you run small subs, the rear chamber couples with the front chamber and extends tuning on rear and front so that’s why they play a lot lower and “windier”. I’ve found some good results from building a regular low tuned ported box and adding a small front chamber in front of it , usually boosts output up high and helps it load a little better but again just makes the box bigger

    • @justinatmidi
      @justinatmidi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They do have more output tho if you compare 2 12s in a ported box and the same in a 4th order, they will get louder because the box is bigger which increases the efficiency

    • @modernbassheads5051
      @modernbassheads5051 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@justinatmidi not always, remember you’re eliminating the back wave with a 4th order so you’re cutting the output almost in half, and saving some of it with the big front chamber. Ive seen people lose a few decibels with a 4th order direct swap from a ported, but they definetly gained sound quality and bandwidth

    • @justinatmidi
      @justinatmidi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@modernbassheads5051 it's probably not correctly designed, or maybe a 1:1 ratio which is less efficient than the 3:1.....there's a reason most spl builds are either 4th or 6th order, they want the loudest possible setup

  • @PBasschannel
    @PBasschannel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Yeah...great explanation...also I like that you call box types as "laymen" ("4th order" and "ported"), because they can understand things more easily what you're talking about...I just want to make clean few things for those who dont know about this: "4th order" is an enclosure which have 4 acoustic orders - as the name says, but there are more types of 4th order enclosures, because given number of an acoustic order is not limited to a single loading arrangement - especially when the number is 4 or more. So, actually the box you called "4th order" it is a 4th order "bandpass" box, and the "ported" or "vented" box is a 4th order enclosure too: 4th order "bassreflex". How to count orders in this case: start with a sealed (closed) box - which is a 2nd order box, then add an another chamber to it - +1 order, then add a port to this added chamber - another +1 order = 4th order bandpass. For ported: add to 2nd order sealed box a port - +1 order, but now, the driver's cone is outside the box, so the sound what makes the driver's cone interacts with the sound what makes the port, which is an another +1 order = 4th order bassreflex. And yeah, because of different types of loading arrangements they are working as you explained them in the vid. Also Hexibase have a vid how to count acoustic orders, it is on Audio Dynamics yt channel, and he shows several variations of loading arrangements too, which are basically the most known subwoofer boxes that even all laymen should know about.

    The 4th order also protects the sub. The sealed portion helps the cone from moving too much if you will….. so you can abuse the subs with little effect.

    Would give these boxes the title "special use case". Argument could be made for use in an application where minimal power draw is a necessary component of the system; the efficiency of a 4th order nets a ~3 dB gain when properly tuned. This efficiency compensates for lack of power (watts RMS). The downside of all this is the stringent requirement for proper tuning - with the listener understanding this type of enclosure may be built to suit musical preferences in some cases; and it takes considerable extra work to construct a box that looks like a blank slate, in addition to all of the properties listed in the video (larger size, long port). Also, if amplifier gain is improperly adjusted this box has a propensity to cook woofers; these boxes have a tendency to mask signs of driver damage - as once learned by a young man and a track called "woofer wrecker". Very good content, thanks!

Can't get better range and like you preach it's allllll about the enclosure. I have 2 parallel 6th single sub 12's 1 in a GMC Envoy and it not only utterly pounds it has massive range for a huge array of music which is totally me.

    So after watching your videos and countless others, about speaker design. I have to say I am probably wrong, but it seems that the best enclosure to get loud, deep, and accurate bass. Would be a horn loaded isobaric, or a 4th or 6th order isobaric. The isobaric configuration to keep the size within reason, for car audio. Plus the enclosure design which offers the output over a certain bandwidth. I don't know but I've watched many videos on TH-cam. Which has me wondering "is this a question within reason?"

    It's fun but overwhelming learning about car audio. I just wanted some bass and now I'm doing physics and fancy math. Now I'm determined to make my one JL audio 12 sound good. My first box was a fail. I try to sealed enclosure but it was about a half a cubic foot too small and I got to get more wood to try again but I think I need a bigger box for my trunk so I'm thinking about a fourth order or something that has the bandpass mode engaged 🤔. I'm just curious to how all of the different enclosures actually sound but I'm also on a budget and probably need to get a better head unit first

  • @Maples01

    I have 2 HE2 12's in a ported box in the rear of my van, facing the back doors, under the bed, the bed is 6" away from the doors, giving space for the bass to come up, so this is like a 4th order if I understand you, since that gap is operating as the port. I used to have my speakers facing forward until I found the bass increased when I turned them to bounce off the rear doors, the van is huge, its a 15 passenger extended Ford.
    My other van has a Skar 10" in one of their ported boxes, I had it facing the rear, but seemed to have muffled it, its under the bed, the mattress is against the rear doors, so the space under the bed seems to be too much, there is a lot of stuff stored under there, so air can't pass through very well, I had to move it, its facing forward, I think it could use a better designed box. I try not to compare both vans as its not fair due to the sub volume.

    I'm confused. So the reason it would not work is because the armrest hole wouldn't be big enough for the application?
    Are you familiar with the Deathbox designed by Steve Deckert?
    It bangs, I just have no idea how or why
    It's a strange box for several reason but I haven't heard any negative feedback from folks using it.
    Its apparently a one-size-fits-all enclosure that doubles power handling and generally solves all the problems associated with bandpass enclosures and uses a duct instead of a port.
    The only driver I have used with it is a Helix Blue10 rated for 200 RMS and had no problem pushing 350W.
    I am a beginner and I know that all sounds ridiculous but I'd be glad send you one if you could make a video commenting on it.

    I always knew that there were subs who didn’t have a good application for a bandpass because of the size of the port. Looking at a 4th order it seems un fathomable it's loud, just looking it would say na just sound muddy n quiet...well my first experience almost 20 years ago gave me that opinion, from cheap small bandpass loaded enclosures a 10" visonik band pass many .5cf per chamber. Sounded like mud and no thump. It was just a cheap combo that was flashy and had cool window but was just junk, I didn't know better it was in late 90s?, but it gave me such a bad opinion of bandpass for years until TH-cam enlightened me. I've never built one but a proper built common configuration 6th order seems like it would be ideal, no sealed section and 2 tuning frequency's how can you go wrong other than botching the box...?

    I thought people use 4th order boxes to reduced rattling and other things in that nature for cars with trunks. i see alot of the ppl out here in the east coast using these type of boxes...
