Bro..from me..a survival guy view point....you made a right and smart decision not to go up especially all your cloth is wet, your body temperature will go down very quickly..is very dangerous, is really cold up there during wet and rain season, sometimes you even can see ice on the rock up there, it"s ok..you already make it to the hostel..do it next time 😁

I thought Canadians are tough! Never fails to amaze me Canadians.
Reminds me of the time I drove my Canadian cousin from Kuching to KK in 2 days ( no Pan Borneo Highway) and was late to Timpohon Gate and he was adamant to climb it still so the guides relent on the condition that he can climb it in 2 hours to Laban Rata. Literally ran up! Brett Logan you legend! The Guide too!
Wet conditions are tough, so much harder to climb Kinabalu. You'll come back and finish it off next year! We'll crowdfund your climb up!

  • @mangosteenmalaysia

Sorry that you guys were unlucky with the weather. You also really need a fully waterproof jacket and hiking boots for this mountain (which I'm sure you're aware of now!) but it sounds like you wouldn't have had a great view from the top anyway. What I also found interesting on this hike was the changes in flora as the altitude levels changed. Anyway, I guess it's something to come back to Sabah for another time and conquer it then!! :)

The porters are really impressive. They go up to the rest house 2 or 3 times a day... and sometimes they carry construction stuff (cement bags or big steel girders.) It's really humbling to be struggling on your way up with a small backpack, and have a porter pass you with a big smile on his face. They're really impressive

As a Sabahan I went up there 3 times at around your age, twice succeeded and one failed. Weather is a huge factor to accomplish the climb. Not everyone conquers the peak in the morning can reach to the peak, hardest route is in the morning with freezing cold and low oxygen level. Garbage bag is a good disposable rain or cold protector, light & easily disposed of when dry or hot. The winds can be strong, enough for any climbing to be stopped for safety - wind chill factor and stability. Same for rain - if too wet, maybe dangerous to summit. Last went up 18 yrs ago at 45 and unfit - took an hour for each rest area before arriving at the Rest House. Nearly didn't summit because the wind was near danger level. The heated Rest House enables you to warm up. A 21 yr old German PE student had altitude sickness at the rest house and had to leave the mt. The room looks the same - 2 wooden double bunks. The catering has since improved. Everything has to be portered up the mt. even the 30Kg gas tanks for cooking. Altitude can affect the taste buds. A black plastic bag can substitute for a jacket. Though your clothing were wet/damp, your body heat could dry it. It is not fog but clouds. It could be clear above. The path to the summit is very different because after 30 mns after the rest house , all vegetation disappears - only moss and ferns can survive the cold and the winds. If you push yourselves you could be warm enough. The descent is a knee killer. Looks like a day later, the weather was good.

Shout out to Ivanna, i remembered a couple of years ago where she said hiking is not her thing (you guys were hiking/trekking one of the islands i think), reaching Laban Rata at that weather is a feat of itself! My first hike up there was in similar weather (plus we were hiking from mesilau gate which added 2 km).. i was soaking wet with bad cramp. my boots and jackets are soaking as well, and sure enough at 2 am i was like f it.. im going to continue sleeping in this freezing bed lol. Out of 12 in our team, 2 never reached labanrata, 3 didnt attempt the climb at 2am and only 3 reached the peak, with the 4 never reached sayat2 (last checkpoint).
I reached the peak on my second attempt though on different year... it was amazing
So, dont feel bad at all, you guys did an awesome job

And you can do the Via Ferrata trail to the peak.....makes it more exciting.

Owww that was too bad guys. But still kudos to both of you, you still managed to reach around that 2.5km level after a somewhat gruelling 3km or more of climbing in adverse weather, with limited visibility, slippery ground, the rain pounding against you, and wet (hence heavier too!) clothes on your backs in a bone-chilling 8°c temperature! That wasn't easy but you both succeeded to reach laban rata, congrats! 👏
And I believe it was a wise decision too, to back off from proceeding further up with the disadvantages you two had, shouldn't push your luck too much 👍

    So much memories!
Please don't feel bad Ivana and Steve.
I too didn't manage to go to the peak despite it was "diamond weather" (super clear sky) but my knee was swelling when I reached Laban Rata and I ended up being left behind because it was too dangerous for me to go up with swollen knee.
(There were 3 Japanese who didn't make it too due to vertigo with the altitude so I didn't feel like a total loser)
However, when I was there it was only 3 deg C at the time and for every Malaysian it would be as bad as what you both are feeling on a rainy Mount KK day.
And yes, Laban Rata always have electricity problem and no hot water at the showers.
(however after almost 6 hours hiking and photo taking, my body is like a well heated engine where I couldn't even feel the cold water anymore, and wore shorts to sleep too - however I cannot say on rainy days....)
I think you went up with the Timpohon trail; which is the "shorter" (supposedly faster) but the hike is all the way up. I went up with Mesilau trail and came down using Timpohon trail so I saw both views. Mesilau trail has more in between flatter trail but it takes longer to arrive there.
I am happy at least you both get to see the beauty of Mount KK trails on the way down. Good trekking tips! I hope you both got the black and white certificate! It is supposed to show that you have reached the Laban Rata (1st camp). Summit's cert is colourful.

Do not feel bad Steve and Ivana, as you said weather is unpredictable, if it was me, I wouldn't continue the hike also. Next time, keep checking up when is the drought season(musim kemarau)/best time to climb Mount Kinabalu or at least not during the peak monsoon season(musim tengkujuh). I personally wish that both of you will plan another trip to climb the Mount Kinabalu, i want to see both of you successfully climb the Mount Kinabalu!! Good job guys. Not easy to climb in the rain and windy conditions. Get a waterproof windbreaker and pack your clothes and socks in plastic bags would help to protect them from rain. Try again next time. Cheers 🥂
