I really needed this. I was going down a spiral of never feeling like I can catch up to the big guns in the hobby. There is so many cards that I need to collect that I’ve stopped eating properly and spent less time with loved ones. You are right. It went from a fun hobby to an addiction. Thank you
It's really refreshing seeing someone on TH-cam being transparent. You can really tell that you care about your fan base and followers.Thank you for your kindness and wisdom.
One thing I learned is if you like the design of the card and want to pay that $300 $400 price tag and NOT primarily invest, just get the korean or Japanese version probably third of the price and the same card with textures
Self control is huge in this hobby. The majority of my collection is just sealed cases and I submit some stuff for grading and keep the 10s... I don't chase much anymore but I did in the beginning.
One of the realist videos I’ve seen in the hobby in a while. Super important to remind ourselves as collectors to step outside of our bubbles to see the bigger picture. Your content offers great value and insight, keep it up Phil!
Just found the channel, and I love it! Thank you for being so down to earth and actually talking about life and not just about chase cards and so on. You got yourself a lifetime subscriber!
I’m at a place where I am satisfied and happy with my collection , but I do remember a point where I recognized I had an issue . It’s a never ending hobby and there’s a good chance you will never have all the cards you desire and that’s ok
I really need this type of video and I love you talking about this. I’m in the same (bad) boat of “going down the spiral of never feeling it’s enough”. You deserve subscribers!
Great advice!! This is why I love watching this channel, it teaches you how to invest responsibility, and not just to follow any trend and throw your money away blindly.
This video hit home for me. So many times in life I have little victories but I didn’t achieve the goal I initially set out for. Or maybe I achieved this goal but it wasn’t until I started aiming for something better/higher. People need to understand you need to celebrate the little wins, and be grateful for what you have and who you have. If you are always chasing, you don’t appreciate the here and now. This lesson pertains to life and collecting. Great video.
great message! as a new to the hobby collector in midlife with a son who is really into it i can appreciate what your saying about having realistic and appropriate goals. the problem occurs when passion is involved and many collecting hobbies revolve around semi-obsession….. you almost need an addiction reality check!
As someone who is new in the hobby I luckily never had the experience of feeling burned out but your advices are perfect for real life. I'm never really happy but I always forget what I achieved so far, should remind myself more often about my achievements, thank you man 💪
That was an amazing video, well done. So many content creators are just ripping stacks on stacks of packs and I think for a lot of people it has a negative impact on how they view their collection and spend their money. I know personally it usually makes me crave more and I have to remind myself that that’s them and I don’t have it like that. 😂
My new fav pokemon channel because the advice relates to me more than others. My chase has always been the team skull pikachu and I can't get the funds to afford it, my mentality is that I can make investments and eventually fund it and I am worried that I will run out of time before it increases in prices again. It has become overwhelming for me and I have bought more necessary. I could probably slowly save up to buy the card straight up and be happy, but then I ask myself if I will be happy after that. You are right that I should be content with what I already have.
Hey, I have just discovered your channel, and I gotta to say, the way you explain things is incredibly easy to understand and so much wisdom in it. In addition, you've saved me a lot of money :D- I was about to buy a ton of Pokémon cards / boosters / ETB`s but your advice really helped me make a more informed decision. Thanks a lot!
You said it so well, so important, thank you very much. I only recently started collecting and I quickly felt pressured. especially through this comparison, and all the videos of people telling you that now is your last chance. I quickly got blinders on and didn't even notice that some of the fun in this great hobby had been lost. You helped me a lot with this video, thank you.
My problem is I got back into the hobby a few years ago and I'm always coming across cards I didn't know existed. After I bought some singles from temporal forces and decided to take a break. I'm satisfied with my collection for now and hit many goals. Gonna skip twilight masquerade and possibly the following set. I needed to hear every bit of this!
I randomly watch your videos now for a month, I'd say, and now I look forward to them because of your clean collecting mentality. Also, kudos to loosing weight. 👏
Hi Phillip, I’ve recently discovered your channel and really enjoy your content. I have recently gotten into pokemon cards and my intentions were to have fun and collect and find cards that I find quirky and enjoyable, without concerning about future value or investment value. However, definitely over time I feel swayed or tempted to become more of an investor and chase speculative cards or fall for FOMO. Seeing your videos have really helped me to refocus and find that balance between collecting and investing. Would be great if you could create a video on the differences between collecting and investing, and how you found was the best way in scoring that balance, especially for those that are new to this ‘hobby’. Thanks!
Thank you for the reality check. We say comparison is the thief of joy, yet when you told the stories of the millionaires it’s easy to see them wrapped up in it, too! So many takeaways here. Great video, well organized and well presented. To your continued success!
I feel this. I started collecting Pokemon less then a year ago and went through most of all the phases and now i can’t wait to achieve my goal, mastering Paldea evolved and POGO, and “quit” collecting.
Great video crazy you make this video because I’m literally at that point in my collecting where I’m like “hey I need to stop for a bit, other things are important at this point but I’m still gonna keep an eye out for sets with art work I really like”!
You earned yourself a new sub, started collecting during Obsidian Flames as a master set collector and it’s been overwhelming because I’m a new father also. Great video on reassurance since now looking at my collection in a new light, I have a ton of great cards I should be proud of.
I really resonate with what you're saying in this vid. I personally spend a lot of time thinking about the cards that I'm chasing and not enough time thinking about the cards that I have pulled. Alt arts are great but some of the basic rare cards that I've pulled have some really nice art that some could argue is underrated.
Man your channel and content is so refreshing. I love the takes and knowledge you are applying to the hobby, its a great watch! Keep it up, cant wait to see more!
I recently got back into pokemon cards and spent a lot of money chasing cards i finally hit the main one i wanted but realized i could’ve just bought it for cheaper this video was really helpful and i think i will start slowing down
Great video! I for myself tend to look at new IRs and SIRs and think 'omg I really need those, they're fantastic!' all the time, then take a deep breath and realize I have to wait 1-3 months until market calms down... boy, it's tough. But it's the right thing to do. 😊
As others have said, any investing is speculative, and with something like Pokémon that also has a lot of nostalgia or passion involved, my best advice is play your own game - figure out what you want to collect rather than always chasing the rarest cards.
Speaking deep truths brother! I got the alt art Latios & Latias but I didn’t feel any happier when I got it, I realize it was just a temporary height of happiness. Thanks for the content!

ive been collecting pokemon cards for 2 years now and have a collection im proud of phil, but these are the general rules i follow for collecting pokemon.
You almost made me feel guilty. I’m 35 cards from finishing all the Sword shield master sets, but it’s only because my kids and I had a blast doing it. We didn’t do it all by packs though. We set a budget and had fun opening cards and finding reverse holos lol If you do this hobby for investment purposes, Bless your path. But it seems to be a far more frustrating path than having fun collecting Also, just got to the end of your video, really appreciate your focus on the love of collecting and not wanting to perpetuate addictive behavior or financially irresponsible collecting. Kudos to you for having a grounded focus on the hobby.
I just into the hobby about a month ago and have been always finding more product to buy or cards to chase, it’s like there’s an endless amount of stuff you can acquire. I wanted to just collect the 151 pokemon in the 151 set now I’m buying other sets like Silver Tempest and Brilliant Stars, worried if I don’t buy now I’ll miss these sets that are going out of print. I wanted to open evolving skies products but it’s too late for those for me. Thanks for the video! I appreciate the cards I have collected and need to chill 😅
Sometimes you just need to take a step back and take a bird's-eye view on what you're built/gained/collected. In this hobby it can feel like you're constantly one-upping yourself with new chases whether it be singles or sealed products. Most of the time, for me at least, it's the thrill of the chase rather than actually getting the end goal. Great insight and an important message a lot of people needed to hear.
Haha I know the feeling. I only can talk about this because I’ve spent dollars I can’t get back! Also you play VGC? Might need to give you a round sometime!
Thank you! I just started collecting Pokemon again about a month ago and ive been buying so much etbs... I do need to calm down.. FOMO hits really hard.. i really need this vid
Great point, comparing anything with another person makes you miserable in my opinion, focus on your goal instead of others. amazing nobody talks about this and I be talking to my wife about this all the time. That’s how I’ve noticed all my goals been archived successfully. This is something that should be used in a daily basis in life not only with Pokemon.
I work to buy expensive alt arts from SWSH only because I think SWSH is special to me. I had vintage but I didn't even sell it I gave it away because the art was so plain but very popular. But something about SWSH art feels like a physical copy of an NFT or something because its art and it has "value" but I do it for the Art and It motivates me to work more to get more slabs. My investments are Schwab, TSP, and sealed products of pokemon. My portfolio is 30% each and I put in 20k in to pokemon so far. Probably my next move is to have a portfolio of vaulted PSA cards.
Human nature is to want what you can't or don't have, always thinking its greener on the other side or if you get something you'll be satisfied but you can never have everything. Tangible objects will never bring true happiness/fulfillment.
Investing adds a layer of fun to pokemon, you buy cards now for cheap and in 3 years or whatever its worth more, if u dont like the card anymore u can sell it for a profit for whatever the new thing is. I think investing is great. Also buying booster boxes to keep sealed, its never going to be worth LESS then what you paid for it (if u buy it new at retail or below retail price)
Let me tell you that the quality of your content is worth of 100k subscribers. I completed all the WOTC and S&M sets during the pandemic. However, I had to stop collecting after 1 year of medical school because it was financially irresponsible and I felt like it was an escape from anxiety. I'm a bit disappointed that I missed on alt art but I also realize that my collection is just sleeping in a cupboard.
I am in this boat right now, i have cards I am going to send off to get graded but after that, need at least a 3 month break from collecting. I have some goals I want to achieve but need to put them on pause for a bit. I really after finishing my goals want to stay more narrow focused on my collection and just have 1 or 2 niches to collect.
When it comes to investing or collecting, 99% will eventually become not as valuable. A long term collector needs to stay focused on the 1% best and most iconic items related to that hobby . The problem with Pokémon for your pocket is it combines investing with collecting and opening. Some times these play against each other so you can not do one in the correct manner. The best investors should never open any product, but then that would be boring. A successful person needs to plan and have discipline based on what they can afford.
I really needed this. I was going down a spiral of never feeling like I can catch up to the big guns in the hobby. There is so many cards that I need to collect that I’ve stopped eating properly and spent less time with loved ones. You are right. It went from a fun hobby to an addiction. Thank you
How tf does collecting take you away from your eating habits and family
It can stockpile. Hope you take the break you need!

The one thing no one tells you is “Don’t invest”. Buy for fun and for the love of it, but don’t invest, it’s too expensive.

Buying these cards is a hobby. Maybe a speculative play. It’s not investing.

You are my favourite TH-camrs
That's very kind of you. Thank you!
Correct!
Appreciate that Simon. I try put the effort in to ensure the quality is there.
Great perspective! Thank you for the insight.
I started going down this spiral that you speak of.
Time to take step back. T
100% appreciate you tuning in.
there is never enough pokemon cards, just like money so true so true...
Always the next chase
I am in this boat right now, i have cards I am going to send off to get graded but after that, need at least a 3 month break from collecting. I have some goals I want to achieve but need to put them on pause for a bit. I really after finishing my goals want to stay more narrow focused on my collection and just have 1 or 2 niches to collect.
Best of luck!
Great vid! You won a new sub!
Awesome, thank you! Welcome to the channel!
Real talk! Fully agreed 👏
Appreciate that! Thanks for watching
Wow... "no your collection is great as it is." Ty Phillip!
