I’m just getting back into the hobby after 20 years and I’ve only been focusing on buying packs of two sets that I like. I’m opening some with my wife and holding some with the hope that they grow in price, but with the mindset that if in 5-10 years they don’t grow as much as I’d like in value, well then I have packs of sets I like that will then be rare to find and can crack them open for the same original MSRP as opposed to the inflated price down the line.
My wife asked me what happens if boxes I invest in don't go up in value. My answer was then I would have a blast opening a bunch of older pokemon packs!
At the end of the day, collecting Pokemon cards is a privilege and we should all remind ourselves of this when contemplating the investment aspects of the hobby. Don't ruin a good thing by chasing the dollar, sometimes things are meant to be enjoyed and appreciated simply for what they are and if you're not able to do that then maybe stepping away is the most healthy option. Awesome video as per usual mate!!
The biggest thing I've learned is that you can't let FOMO control your spending. I will never own all the hit cards or all my favorite cards from all the sets, and that is 100% okay!
You've been consistently posting some of the best Pokemon content on TH-cam. This video was no exception! Instant watch anytime to release anything. Keep it up!!!
I've really enjoyed exploring your videos. The variability is great. Collecting, investing, history, psychology, and exploring/opening sets. I love the dee dives into the many sides of our hobby. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to future videos and binging on old ones
After collecting graded cards and vintage raw for my personal collection, I have been entertaining the prospect of buying and holding sealed as well. I have been watching quite a few of your videos, and I thank you very much for your in-depth and realistic expectations and achievements. Currently considering going into 151 sealed collecting
Damn Phil, every one of your videos hits me really hard. I love pokemon videos, but I think I've figured out why I like your content so much, and it's because of the life advice you give. You give advice that is so relatable. I dont mean to come off like a fanboy, but I genuinely appreciate your content.
Some great points here bud. Most investment type videos are just awful to watch on here….. yours give some really good incite and points for those of us who are collectors, but also like to make smart choices with our money.
Yo Phillip - I love your channel a lot and always appreciate the content and perspective you bring. Speaking just for myself, I prefer your older videos where you were just talking to the camera, rather than your more recent heavily-edited videos. I understand that it might lead to higher retention and your skills are noteworthy, but it felt important enough for me to drop this comment. Just talking to the camera seemed more genuine. Maybe there are certain types of videos that align with the edited style and others that are more direct to camera...my 2c. Cheers.
My man really appreciate this feedback! I totally understand your point of view. I am currently reviewing different styles of editing and seeing how they perform and will make some future decisions based on this. Production value is important in this space as its a highly competitive market within TH-cam, so I have been focusing on adding more of a high quality viewing experience. Though I have taken on this feedback and will use this to make the channel better, we can only get better! Appreciate it.
Dude, your videos are really good. Honestly, commenting just to give you some positive vibes, Your hobbies mirror mine. Keep up for the great work. Can't wait until to you hit 100k subs!
Think imma have to start taking notes lol. Appreciate the vid. Personally i budget ro buy my items and try to habe reasonable goals for both collecting and investing. Like i bought the metagross recently cauze i like it. Id like to buy some more for investing cause its a sick card imo but imma wait cause that hurts my budgeting. Id rather buy some singles i like and add to my personal collection while also buying some sealed and other singles to then sell down the road to make some profit. Its important to have real expectations when buying these things and grow your collection slowly overtime. Also its a hobby so enjoy it!
@@phillips.collectibles thank you so much for replying, love the content and pomodoro has always been something I’ve wanted to implement in anything I do.
I like the art collection comparison. The alt arts, illustration rares and special illustration rares are the main reason I started collecting. Investing is really not the primary reason, I just think the new artworks are genuinely neat and I just want to have it in my own personal collection. I didn't really get art collectors before, "Why would someone spend so much on a piece of art that they can look at a version of on the internet for free?" But now I really get the perspective of owning a piece of beautiful art. The great part of collecting these nice cards is storage as well. I imagine art collectors need a ton of hanging wall space. But with pokemon cards, you need a box or a binder to store what you like, and a display to show off a ton of prized works takes comparatively less space. There's gotta be a TCG museum of some sort in the world to look at other really cool cards.
Incredible story! You’re a survivor bro. As a filmmaker myself, I’ve also been wondering how the hell you provide so much production value your videos. It all makes sense now! Inspiring to say the least, as I will soon be entering fatherhood and hope carry and share my passion of collecting with my children one day as well. 👊🏽
You've got this my bro! Yeah the passion for filmmaking is still there but it became too money-oreintated as I had to focus on an income. That's what ruins the love!
Great video and very informative. I agree that Pokémon collecting/investing needs to have balance. My personal strategy is to buy a couple booster boxes of a new set to rip and have fun. Then after that I usually wait a month or two for my favorite singles to hit their low on TCG (which is usually the long term low) and purchases them (assuming I haven’t pulled them already). It works for me and lets me have fun ripping packs while still building up a nice collection that is continuously gaining value over time.
Great Advice, I am pretty new to collecting (again)/ content creation and I have just been collecting to collect right now bc I enjoy pokemon as a whole. However, I can already see how buying just to buy rather than invest in what you love can take its toll and ruin something you love. Keep up the good content!
I bought 4 or 5 battle styles elite training boxes because I got them for a low and I just opened one just to see and because I love opening. I actually love the set and I completely understand why people don't appreciate it because they have a somewhat different take on battling and what not. Overall I can completely enjoy the set and think that it is one of the most slept on sets. I feel like the cards have deep and a different type of texturing that is almost unmatched. Anyways thank you so much for your videos!
I agree with your approach mostly, but I will give one big con for investing into what you like that i experience every day and it is really a huge issue with this concept imho. If I invest in card or set I like meaning it is an emotional decision not based only on cold heart logic. I tend to have issue with exiting the investment at the right time, cause it is a posession that I like and it is hard for me to part with it (thoughts like, i could never get this again for this price, i would miss it etc.) which suddenly makes the ivestment into a hypotetical investment cause i never cash out, so the profit is actually not real as it is never taken. It is much easier to part with products that i didn't like at all once they raise enough.
Very informative. It's good to have a genuine interest in what you're investing. The genuine interest will lead to the want to have more knowledge of the card, or whatever else it is you're collecting, which could open the door to something new or simply being happy with what you've learned.
Hey Phillip, I really enjoy your content and I've had a very similar experience, pokemon some what saved my life, I hit rock bottom and this was my escape, I really enjoy this hobby and love for pokemon, I have a collection of pokemon and other tcg such as dragon ball and once piece, I have around 100k worth of value in my collection but thinking about wanting to turn this into my new business somehow, I'm your opinion, I would I do so? Or how could I do so?
Thanks for another great video Philip. The advice to only collect what you like is great advice. I was told this a few years back and for me it saved me alot of money, and made me some money as well. I loved the eeveelutions and well that worked out for me :)
I think you are always going to make mistakes in this hobby and market, I have made a few but you learn and then wins have covered over the fails of the first 2 months. I’m actually thankful for channels like this my boss at work sells collectable toys on eBay as his side hustle and has taught me a lot.
Also avoid buying random stuff from ebay auction because its only 80-90% of market price! Especially when you have less than 5 minutes to decide, oh man. You need to think more than that time

This is the perfect mindset.
That the correct mindset. I started with Evolving skies and been buying ever since. Its a great way to grow wealth steadily
Def focus on crown zenith! When its no longer in production i think itll be a harder set to get a hold of considering pull rates
My wife asked me what happens if boxes I invest in don't go up in value. My answer was then I would have a blast opening a bunch of older pokemon packs!
This is the way…. Also why buying sets you actually like is helpful
I’m sure she loved that answer😂😂😂😂😂

i havent ever concentrated more on a video before, the thing is this video is about pokemon, but helps with every other area of life

I appreciate that!

Low key miss the innocence of collecting cards for the love of it. Now everyone’s obsessed with profit.

Solid video bro. I’ve started just buying the singles or graded slabs which is just so much simpler to get the cards you really want.
i love how you tease the next Video, brilliant!

What do you use for a pomodoro timer? I would like to use this technique

I can’t afford the whole booster box right now but if I segment and pay for it over time it’s much more affordable. 😂
Just a great video with nice etiquette
Great channel with great excellent content. Definitely one of the best pokemon channels in youtube. Keep it up, this channel is on its way to the top.
Wow, thanks! Appreciate that amazing feedback!
Great energy. I'm going to your vintage video now 😅
