When first watching this, I thought it was a weird way to visually represent the meaning behind void, rebirth by escaping depression and anxiety and an old version of yourself, but when you rewatch it you notice all the little hidden details and symbolism that Melanie uses to express herself. In the first scene, Crybaby, or Melanie, pushes herself out of a heart, and becomes a new creature, both showing the rebirth of Crybaby as a new creature, and how Melanie is letting go of an old version of herself. She then enters a door while looking behind her, making sure she's not being followed, and runs into the Void where she is chased by herself, or at least creatures that look similar to her. She then goes into another room where I can only assume she's watching herself incubate, and appears to be judging herself before she's even a new person. The creatures then hatch and just menacingly watch as she crawls away and falls into a new room full of bugs. In the room there is what looks like a window where you can see a bright star, and because we know Melanie likes to put tarot card references in her music videos, when you look up what the star means it says that upright it can mean faith and hope, but reversed can mean insecurity, discouragement, and faithlessness. The bugs in the room represent her insecurities and she takes a sword to one of the bugs and it flowers grow out of the bugs wound, which could represent the card being turned upright by letting go of insecurities and discouragement, and having faith and hope for a new beginning. She then falls through a tunnel, and somehow has a g-n, a sh00t5 herself and moths come out of her, and moths can represent change, transformation, endings, and death. She then falls out of a tower and the video end, but the tower is symbolic as well, the Tower Tarot Card upright represents disruption, change of life, and awakening, showing that she has completely left her old self behind, and is ready for a new life. That's just what I could interpret from the music video, but art is for the viewers to interpret however they'd like to, so I'd like to hear what other people think!
i love how in this video, she portrayed the feeling of anxiety. especially the parts when there was a giant eye behind her, it showed the feeling of being judged and watched in my opinion. also, the part where there are many of herself or at least creatures that look like her chasing her. For me, it kind of shows the feeling of being scared of embarrassment, or being judged and being paranoid that people are judging you. i can definitely sometimes relate to this song and the video how i saw it. thank you melanie for being such an inspiration and idol to me

Honestly this song came at a perfect time for me, and it's just a coincidence that it's the one Melanie wrote all by herself. I am at a point in my life where im trying to make changes for the better. I started therapy not too long ago and was diagnosed with ADHD and generalized anxiety. I showed this song (and eventually the whole album) to my therapist to help explain to her how I feel. She loved it btw lol

Yes! I love the visual expression at the part where she’s falling and she has the gun to her head, she doesn’t shoot but butterflies come out the back of her head, I read a thing saying butterflies represent anxiety and thoughts of death and then after all the butterflies escape she starts drowning in them which represents drowning in your bad thoughts, after she’s escaped the butterflies she can finally escape the void. ❤
A small detail I noticed is that when the Creature is being chased by the big eye, the pupil of it keeps getting big then small over and over again. As I grew up listening to her, with everyone song that came out she has been able to completely captivate my life. From the crybaby era to k-12 to void etc. every song including this one helps me go through my struggles because I so closely relate to this. I love the void era because it’s the same body type as me. And I struggle with a lot of insecurities. Seeing my favorite person who I think it so beautiful struggle with her own insecurities really helps me so much. I know it’s probably wrong to say but I love Melanie with weight on her because it’s hard to find body types like mine. And then seeing her, I try and be nicer to myself knowing Melanie is beautiful. I might not look as pretty as her but it reminds me that I’m a human and my body is beautiful. My one thing I want to do in life is to meet her

I am grateful for this new album, not only do we get to see such an amazing artist grow...But we grow with her. Some of us have been with her since crybaby, and a lot of us stayed the same since k-12 but with portals...We all have been growing. Going through each and every Melanie Martinez song is such a emotional roller coaster. One that I think all of us can enjoy. I remember listening to my first melanie martinez song in 2nd grade. I am now in highschool. Melanie Martinez had been my coping mechanism in a dysfunctional family. My family had often fed into my insecurities, so in order to mute them out I would listen to Melanie. To me, the Void hits all of those wounds in such a beautiful way. I have listened to every song out in this album...And it is truly amazing. Thank you Melanie Martinez for raising me when nobody else did... For me...K-12 made me realize how bad my eating disorder was, with the song known as "Orange Juice" when I listened to that song I remember breaking down sobbing...Not only did it help me through my eating disorder but it also helped me through my insecurities when I was beginning my teenage years. Dollhouse was the first ever song I listened to from Melanie, and it is the most heart wrenching one for me to look back on. Since it reminds me of what I came from. To most people these are all just songs, but to me this is something deeper, because in all honesty...I would not be here if I hadn't stumbled upon "Dollhouse" that day. Melanie truly deserves #5 music trending...In fact I think it should be higher.

it's genuinely amazing to me how the same artist that expressed my darkest shadows in crybaby with 3ating disorders and relationships issues when i was in middle school is the same one who put out portals. i feel like i grew with crybaby slowly, the transition from crybaby to k-12 and then this is perfect and the timing is sooooo right. it's like there's no song i never "related" to at one point. I had my dark night of the soul and then started to heal and practice spirituality and then for you to put out such a beautiful album talking about the same thing feels so surreal. i love you and what you’ve done for all of us!! you’re an incredible artists and you align with my life path so so so divinely

It came to me at a time when I needed the most help and was so deeply hurt inside and struggling so much (yes I got help) but it just really feels so relatable and magical at the same time. I have been guilty of judging myself more harshly than others, always afraid what others think of me or fear of failure keeping me from expressing myself and my gifts. When first watching this, I thought it was a weird way to visually represent the meaning behind void, rebirth by escaping depression and anxiety and an old version of yourself, but when you rewatch it you notice all the little hidden details and symbolism that Melanie uses to express herself.
In the first scene, Crybaby, or Melanie, pushes herself out of a heart, and becomes a new creature, both showing the rebirth of Crybaby as a new creature, and how Melanie is letting go of an old version of herself. She then enters a door while looking behind her, making sure she's not being followed, and runs into the Void where she is chased by herself, or at least creatures that look similar to her. She then goes into another room where I can only assume she's watching herself incubate, and appears to be judging herself before she's even a new person. The creatures then hatch and just menacingly watch as she crawls away and falls into a new room full of bugs. In the room there is what looks like a window where you can see a bright star, and because we know Melanie likes to put tarot card references in her music videos, when you look up what the star means it says that upright it can mean faith and hope, but reversed can mean insecurity, discouragement, and faithlessness. The bugs in the room represent her insecurities and she takes a sword to one of the bugs and it flowers grow out of the bugs wound, which could represent the card being turned upright by letting go of insecurities and discouragement, and having faith and hope for a new beginning. She then falls through a tunnel, and somehow has a g-n, a sh00t5 herself and moths come out of her, and moths can represent change, transformation, endings, and death. She then falls out of a tower and the video end, but the tower is symbolic as well, the Tower Tarot Card upright represents disruption, change of life, and awakening, showing that she has completely left her old self behind, and is ready for a new life.
That's just what I could interpret from the music video, but art is for the viewers to interpret however they'd like to, so I'd like to hear what other people think!

Honestly this song came at a perfect time for me, and it's just a coincidence that it's the one Melanie wrote all by herself. I am at a point in my life where im trying to make changes for the better. I started therapy not too long ago and was diagnosed with ADHD and generalized anxiety. I showed this song (and eventually the whole album) to my therapist to help explain to her how I feel. She loved it btw lol

I love the visual expression at the part where she’s falling and she has the gun to her head, she doesn’t shoot but butterflies come out the back of her head, I read a thing saying butterflies represent anxiety and thoughts of death and then after all the butterflies escape she starts drowning in them which represents drowning in your bad thoughts, after she’s escaped the butterflies she can finally escape the void. ❤

As I grew up listening to her, with everyone song that came out she has been able to completely captivate my life. From the crybaby era to k-12 to void etc. every song including this one helps me go through my struggles because I so closely relate to this. I love the void era because it’s the same body type as me. And I struggle with a lot of insecurities. Seeing my favorite person who I think it so beautiful struggle with her own insecurities really helps me so much. I know it’s probably wrong to say but I love Melanie with weight on her because it’s hard to find body types like mine. And then seeing her, I try and be nicer to myself knowing Melanie is beautiful. I might not look as pretty as her but it reminds me that I’m a human and my body is beautiful. My one thing I want to do in life is to meet her

I am grateful for this new album, not only do we get to see such an amazing artist grow...But we grow with her. Some of us have been with her since crybaby, and a lot of us stayed the same since k-12 but with portals...We all have been growing. Going through each and every Melanie Martinez song is such a emotional roller coaster. One that I think all of us can enjoy. I remember listening to my first melanie martinez song in 2nd grade. I am now in highschool. Melanie Martinez had been my coping mechanism in a dysfunctional family. My family had often fed into my insecurities, so in order to mute them out I would listen to Melanie. To me, the Void hits all of those wounds in such a beautiful way. I have listened to every song out in this album...And it is truly amazing. Thank you Melanie Martinez for raising me when nobody else did...
For me...K-12 made me realize how bad my eating disorder was, with the song known as "Orange Juice" when I listened to that song I remember breaking down sobbing...Not only did it help me through my eating disorder but it also helped me through my insecurities when I was beginning my teenage years. Dollhouse was the first ever song I listened to from Melanie, and it is the most heart wrenching one for me to look back on. Since it reminds me of what I came from. To most people these are all just songs, but to me this is something deeper, because in all honesty...I would not be here if I hadn't stumbled upon "Dollhouse" that day.

it's genuinely amazing to me how the same artist that expressed my darkest shadows in crybaby with 3ating disorders and relationships issues when i was in middle school is the same one who put out portals. i feel like i grew with crybaby slowly, the transition from crybaby to k-12 and then this is perfect and the timing is sooooo right. it's like there's no song i never

I had my dark night of the soul and then started to heal and practice spirituality and then for you to put out such a beautiful album talking about the same thing feels so surreal. i love you and what you’ve done for all of us!! you’re an incredible artists and you align with my life path so so so divinely
This album really means a lot to me. It came to me at a time when I needed the most help and was so deeply hurt inside and struggling so much (yes I got help) but it just really feels so relatable and magical at the same time. It’s helped me with my mental health in ways I could never imagine and this album has been such a good escape as it’s so visual and the storytelling is so beautiful the songs are so powerful and meaningful. I’m just obsessed with it so much
