Persian rulers Darius 1 ( 550 -586 BCE ) has used the term Hindu in his inscription , but it was for the geographical area of INDUS RIVER. because Persian's & greek's were not able to pronounce "SA" so they use "HIND" & " IND " respectively.
Heun Twang ( 7th century AD ) had used term HINDU in his travelogue in religion sense ( For non Buddhist religion ).
In modern India it was used for the first time by RAJA RAM MOHAN ROY in 1816-17.
Before this People of Ancient india were not categorized based on any religions , instead they were categorized themselves based on their varna , caste , language , occupation , sect , region etc.

It would have been better had he read " Satyarth Prakash" written by Swami Dayanand, the founder of Aryasamaj before explaining the genesis and growth of Vedas .

What is vedic religion or sanathana religion or hindu relligion ?
As per you earlier Vedic religion later sanatana religion & now hindu religion. As per history & scientific facts earlier ancient regional customs ( tribal religion ) followed by first Indians ( present andamanese or sentinelese ) who 65,000 years ago migrated to indian sub continent.
9,000 years ago western Iran farmers migrated or invaded merged with north west first Indians and formed Indus valley civilization ( IVC ) who were following Dravidian coustom religion & spoke & used languages near similar to Dravidian languages ( but language is not yet deciphered but sure not Sanskrit or indo European language )
4,000 year ago Aryan or steppes migrated or invaded from present Ukraine, Russia & Kazakhstan the region was call as Eurasia and merged with few IVC people ( mixture of western Iranian farmers & first Indians ) and formed ancient north indian race (ANI) that period of time is called as vedic period . vedic religion or vedic coustoms & European languages came to indian sub continent . they started to speak mixture of indian & European language that is Sanskrit ( indo European language because you can find more similarities between Sanskrit language & European languages ). The then vedic religion had deadliest cruel practice rituals because they use to sacrifice cow, ox, sheep , goat & even humans , same practices you can see in Eurasia region before Jewish , Christianity & islam came to that region. Here in india people started to move away from vedic religion because of its cruel sacrifice practice & started to embrace other sect like Jainism , ajivikka & buddism .... which all was more peaceful religion than cruel Vedic religion .
Remaining IVC people migrated or invaded toward southern part of india which was already occupied by first indian's and merged with them and formed ancient south indian race ( ASI ) & started to speak Dravidian languages.
Later during mauryan dynasty Chandra Gupta maurya was following Jainism and most of the people followed Jainism, his son bindusara was ajivikka follower , his grandson Ashoka followed buddism , his great grandson & great granddaughter mahindra & sangamithra preached & followed buddism, later buddism was major religion of indian subcontinent.
After fall of mauryan dynasty roughly from 200 BC to 300 AD , in this period we can see that Vedic religion started to reviv itself by introducing UPANISHAD ( Critics of vedas ) making it cruel free religion to compete with other sect of peaceful religions.
pushpamitra sunga who was Vedic follower in the year 188 BCE he ended mauryan empire and established sunga dynasty later he started to carry out cruel sacrifices as mentioned in Vedic religion with the help of official persist was obviously " pathanjalli ".

Similarities between Sanskrit language & European languages.
      1) For the word "Mother" is used in English, "माता or matha " is used in Sanskrit language , "MUTTER " is used in German language.
      2) For the word " Tree " is used in English , "त्रायस or trayas " is used in Sanskrit language , "tres" is used in Latin language and " treis " is used in Greek language.
We can find many more similarities between Sanskrit language & European languages, from this we clearly come to know that Sanskrit language is nothing but Indo- European language.
