- Virtue of Strength has a pretty massive deckbuilding requirement - playing all basic lands - but the reward is also high - tripling your mana! This makes it the perfect way to recreate the infamous Channel + Fireball combo from 1993 in 2023 Standard!
Today's video is brought to you by Card Kingdom. You can pick up some MTG cards (and help support the show) at www.cardkingdo...

Much respect to the Grabby Giant player, they’re so all in on their boi and it’s beautiful to see!
I was definitely rooting for them. Live the dream, Grabby Giant player!
I went to the prerelease, and Grabby Giant is a bit strong in Limited
Something something Grabby Giant
That was the best game!
34:21 opponent can't ultimate nissa because fight rigging is a beginning of combat trigger, so you are already in combat when nissa is cast
The grabby giant game was hilarious
The amount of people not playing basics and just getting strip mined was hilarious.
Standard players so greedy.
@MTGGoldfish It was probably because you don't have to worry about wildcards during early access, but yeah, the greed was real there lol
40:44 Jesus christ, wow, Devilish Valet really can go pretty nuts in Rakdos right now. Rat song also probably makes it a monster as well and it plays well with Celebration too. I want to see this combo explored now.
Actually the spiciest thing in the video😆
I really want to know what, if anything, that Grabby Giant deck was supposed to do
I too would love to know that!
It was supposed to play grabby giant.
Probably Beluna Grandsquall giant adventure tribal, but it sure seemed like Grabby Giant was the all-star.
The safe play in game 1 would be to play the forest, tap 7 for virtue, and tap a remaining mountain for 3 mana to play a 2/2 Shivan Devastator on defense
Definitely building this. Super fun video! Thanks again, Seth!
Glad you liked it!
I think the way you're supposed to make Hylda work is in a sort of azorius tempo shell. Playing control and putting a lonely creature on the board, expecting it to not get blown up, is asking way too much. Also, tap effects are much more powerful if you're on the offensive.
In Modern there's:
Glare of Subdual
2GW
Enchantment
Tap an untapped creature you control: Tap target artifact or creature.
I imagine playing that enchantment, then Hylda and tapping her to tap an opponents' creature, make an elemental, and using that elemental to tap even more opponents' creatures and make even more elementals. The enchantment doesn't care about summoning sickness.
@@funkydiscogod I mean sure, but what if the opponent isn't playing creatures?
@@MetalHev Then you sideboard out the creature removal in games 2 and 3.
The strip mine mode on Field of Ruin is so strong in early access!
I highly suggest anyone playing this adds Bramble Familiar//Fetch Quest, as it's either great ramp or 4 more copies of Virtue (or both!)
Don't underestimate Grabby Tribal.
In response to the tap spell at 19:19, you could have tapped the awakened skyclave to its mana ability to prevent the Hylda trigger.
a little surprised to not see brotherhood's end in the list.
Saffron: If I cast my topiary stomper I can ramp into virtue of strength allowing me obliterate my opponent with one powerful spell.
His opponent: hell yeah, Grabby giant.
Very fun deck, reminds me of BFZ standard, where I played monogreen ramp into Gaea's Revenge, Ulamog and Great Aurora. That deck won me the store championship 😌
Just pointing out that the OG fetches didn’t cost life, they came into play tapped. Most people ditched those after the new fetches came out and now you only see them occasionally in commander precons.
I still think WotC should reprint them in every Commander precon because they're too slow to be actually played but still very useful for precon power level
Honestly I think they should get reprinted into a base set
@@bobzourThe problem is that unless you put typed dual lands in the precons, they're basically just Evolving Wilds and they already put that in the precons.
Big fan of this nostalgic kind of fire ball deck reminds me of the 90s, thanks for cool content Seth
Grabby Giant player is my new favorite player. True dedication is rare.
the world isn't ready for grabby giant nonbo
The way I made my Hylda deck work is with Elvish Mariner. Turning scry into tap is more effective than finding things that tap on their own, AND you can chain Hylda's Scry2DrawACard mode into more taps for more trigger.. You still need to untap if you curve Mariner into Hylda turns 3 and 4, but the pay off is much much more consistent and easier to get started.
It has just now occurred to me after several years of playing Magic: the Gathering that Channel Fireball is a combination of the cards Channel and Fireball, and not just a catchy name for a website.
Used to play something similar back in day with Nyxbloom Ancient (which is better than Virtue in most regards, *except* that it was a creature which is more of a drawback than not), Sublime Epiphany (often copying the Nyxbloom for MTGA-breaking huge mana shenanigans) and Shipwreck Dowser (as a bit of a lock with Sublime Epiphanies that only take 2 lands to play).
I'd be curious if I could get a Virtue model to work in historic/explorer with the same concept (and Virtue being a little harder to remove), but the issue with those wider formats would be hard ramping and surviving long enough for the payoff.
nyx ancient had the great hedge AND a stout af nissa backing it for MUCH crazier and more versatile ramp.... that era gave standard mono Green stompy a whole new level of giggles.... I'm toying around with that get X forest dryads card from a set or two ago card and that combo to see if i can't make a "ramp/ball" hybrid work out but so far it's been nigh ineffective thanks to my friends having an obsession with ley-line of singularity and making sure I don't have any sort of token deck fun
i love grabby giant guy
Great deck Seth, absolute banger.
GRABBY GIANT AGAINST THE ODDS WHEN
It's funny to see people mocking the Grabby Giant. I think Grabby Giant is literally one of the best adventures and it's easily modern playable. But mostly because of how cascade works + it ramps and makes material. It enables new combos and buffs old ones. In standard, people can use it to ramp into turn 4 Invasion of Alara (and then cascade into another Grabby Giant 🤣 So OP!).
Louder for the people in the back: PLAY! BASIC! LANDS!
I demand a grabby giant against the odds deck
I could listen to Seth talk about what happening between him and a Grabby Giant deck for hours.
15:15 you actually have lethal here: -2 chandra for two damage to face, play second chandra, +2 for mana, flashback light up the night x=7 doubled is 14 more damage for 16 total
I fully support Bonecrusher's little brother, Grabby!
Surprised not to see any Dire-Strain Rampage in the deck. You can use it to ramp early and you can use it as a Stone Rain/Naturalize with Flashback if the opponent doesn't have basics.
Shoutout to grabby giant, the real mvp
You should add some city of fire or fiery emancipation since that essentially does the same thing (but you can do it a turn earlier)
Seth, I played this and its certainly missing some lifegain other than the fetchlands....I put in a splash of black for 4x march of sorrows and 3 swamps, cause before i could pull a wincon off i died like 99% of the time but with the march even if u gotta kill your own creature the life will save you a ton !
The Chandra, Hope's Beacon uptick + static ability + Light Up the Night can do a 14 damage back up blast.
Tomer would love this deck.
OK now I need to know what was in the Grabby Giant deck. My best deck is it was like Beluna adventures but Grabby Giant?
Apparently Seth was playing so many basics in his deck that there weren't any left for anyone else.
I wish I had thought of that joke for the video ;)
this deck is hilarious
It actually sort of worked!
Wow, I entirely missed the part, where Tangled Colony was that based. I know the Devilish Valet was the showstopper there, but I can see some meme-potential in having Tangled Colony explode into 20 rats off of Star of Extinction or something.
The Grabby Giant player was living his best life
game against Lemon you had lethal one turn sooner. FOR plus the 18 you had from basics was the 19 you needed
Also a budget deck at $77
Looks like a fun deck before I see any gameplay
Yeah, it's not super cheap on Arena, but in paper it's very budget friendly.
I need more off meta decks :D this is so fun :D
Is Irencrag actually better than Bramble Familiar in this deck? The things you want to play on 3 are 3 mana anyway, so I think the upside of being able to dig for your Virtue when you get to 7 mana might be better upside compared to being less likely to die to removal early.
I think this deck is also supposed to run Brotherhood's End, so it makes sense to play ramp that doesn't die to your own sweepers
Couldn't Seth have won at 28:18 by just casting the Light Up the Night in his hand with his twenty mana? Or did I miss something?
In Historic you could do virtue of strength with banefire could be cool as long as they don't gain more than 20.
This is actually a pretty fun budget deck lol
“Opponent, do you have the green fatal push?”😂😂😂
I'm curious if you could adapt this into Pioneer somehow...
I haven't listened to Bright Eyes in so long
the grabby giant match was so close tho
I'd like to call this deck "Virtue Fire Signalling". Fight me.
The rat valet deck was sick
Seth losing to the panharmonicon deck, I just don't even know what to say, lol. Also, yep, there's something so pure about casting an X damage spell for X=20.
Love it
Early access? I thought it is released.
Yeah, it's out, this was just recorded during early access.
@MTGGoldfish ahhhh. Duh. Need time for editing. 🤦♀️
There's some cool cards I'm seeing playing in Historic decks. Hopefully you play some historic as well with the new cards. 👍
this might be the most painfully unlucky deck I've yet crafted. definetly part me as the pilot, the rest is the magic gods like "no. you shall not"
This seems more like heartbeat of spring 2023 edition than channel/fireball.
Against the Odds: Legacy Hilda Opposition time.
Edit : Also you have to do a Grabby Giant deck now.
rad!
i like this! will this deck do any good in modern?
No-one has basics because you used them all, Seth! I'll admit that I'm kinda sad that you didn't rub that lesson in by looping your virtual Strip Mines with Garenbrig Growth.
...
I honestly feel like Virtue of Strength is one of the strongest Virtues from a Standard perspective - the decks that would theoretically want the White, Black, and Red ones are unlikely to cast the enchantment half unless something went very wrong (and I don't see very many decks wanting the Red one's adventure half either...), there's already a decent basic-land-based ramp plan in Standard, and the best cards to cheat out the Virtues in Standard are all Green.
I find it really ironic that Seth comments on the lack of basics in opponents' decks when he doesn't play any commander XD
Commander and standard have vastly different manabases, but it was funny lol
Ha, i do play some, usually just a handful though. I don't think I've ever played literally zero lands.
Actual footage of Seth beating Gabriel Nassif with jank
Fastest ramp in standard is:
Stalwart on 1
Briefcase on 2 (another stalwart if you got it)
Zendikar on 3
8 mana WUBRG on 4 (9 maybe)
Requires untapped land drop each turn
Is there 1 mana fog in standard?
Do a deck about roles preferably wicked roles
You're in luck! Check one of the previous early access videos he uploaded.
I feel like this deck would be better if Red was a splash. Like you could run a single mountain and still be able to cast 4x light 4x devastator, but then you get to use Nissa and Awaken the Woods as an alternate finish
Also the Song of Hasty Rats is probably better than Shivan Devastator.
they need to reprint early harvest for this one to go off
No man reminds me of The Bear in the Big Blue House more
If you want her to work you need to use the new eldraine tap creatures.
I was thinking Shacklegeist: "Tap two untapped Spirits you control: Tap target creature you don't control."
And spirit tokens. That way, you can tap down their team, and Hylda pumps yours.
I feel like beseech the mirror is busted. tutoring for a 4 cmc card for 4 to the battlefield is just too good.
Yeah, that card is wild.
Just did some quick math with Virtue:
If you have 11 or more basics in play, you can cast Virtue for 7 and then tap the remaining 4+ for triple mana which would pull you ahead - which means at worst Virtue is a Desparate Ritual at 11 (+1 mana) and pulls ahead after that.
Also, is it crazy to run Conduit of Worlds and/or Perennial Behemoth in the 75 somewhere and a couple more Gield of Guin so you can Strip Mine your opponent to oblivion?
It's almost like content creators have been making fun of basics for so long people forget they're important.
grabby giant player... my friend. you bow to no one.
Sonic Says:
Getting strip-mined always feels bogus. If you don't make sure there's a basic land in your deck, that's no good!
Lol. Instead of Seth playing Panharmonicon and durdle-ing we got his opponent playing momharmonican and turtle-ing...
Song of Totentanz would also be a good "fireball" card
I like Virtue of Strength it got me some wins in draft. Had it together with the green Leyline and could activate the Leyline 3 times a turn
He was given a choice between using his wildcards and using Grabby Giant.
.
.
.
He chose Grabby Giant
I'm just waiting the video where Seth plays against CGB 😍
We're still on the VIP games? It's a bummer seeing interesting deck ideas only being playtested against uncompetitive pre-release brews
Against the grabby boi, I would have waited to kill them. I have no clue what shenanigans they were trying to do and I want to know so bad
This video shows us that standard needs Blood Moon. Someone's gotta teach the greedy players about basic lands.
I'd be okay with Blood Moon in Standard ;)
Saffron....Olive
The strip mines were hilarious but in all fairness, you probably are more likely to lose due to drawing a basic and getting color screwed than you are to someone playing field of ruin in 2023. I can probably count the number of times I've been forced to search for a basic land over the last 100 hours of playing magic on one hand.
Difficult to win games. 1/10 in silver ranked. Had to add brother's end for a sweeper on aggro decks. Never did the channel fireball but did cast some hefty dragons but they got targeted removal or blocked and then removed before doing any damage.
Should have called this deck "Virtue signaling"
I hate that green once again got the worst of the cycle. Not only is it 7 mana (which will never see play in any format) but it has such a strict limitation
But Fireball!
@@MTGGoldfish Fair! And I love that you make content even on the subpar cards :D
Wouldn't Solphim, Mayhem Dominus be worth it in this deck. With Chandra out, it's actually better than virtue because it's 4x damage. Also, since this build is all in on the combo, it might need City on fire for more copies of the combo.
Suprised you didn't name it "basicly just fireball"
[Me, after watching Game 2]: ....does anyone else miss *Test of Talents* in Standard?
Please no.
@@MTGGoldfish Aww....okay...
Wow. I played modern back during the golden era. I have way too much respect for Path To Exile and Ghost Quarter to play ZERO basics like the standard players these days.
dude sounds like he is on the verge of sneezing with every word
Seth in commander 'i don't play basic lands at all! they are so bad!' seth in every other format 'omg why are these players so greedy!? play some basics!'
Really
