I LOVE these slightly-less-relevant videos that do a bunch of synthesis between different stories to highlight a specific culture or event as a whole. Keep up the good work!
I think it’d be cool to canonize the Ysalamiri! What if instead of being void of the force they could just absorb the force? That way it fits into Lucas’s idea of “the force flows through all living things”, while keeping the idea of what the Ysalamiri do the same as in legends. And there’s canon examples of someone absorbing the force, like when Yoda absorbs Dooku’s force lightening.
That's better, but it still doesn't explain how they could be powerful enough to continuously use the ability for their entire lives, nor how they could withstand continually absorbing the Force around them. There could be a perpetual generating mechanic involved where the power it absorbs is partially used to continue the activation of the ability itself, but even that would have its limits. Maybe if it's something that could be turned on for a limited time when they feel threatened or are trained by sentient species to do so, then it could work.
The third type reminds me of the Anti-Prior Device from the last season or so of Stargate SG-1. To combat powerful psychics known as Priors, Stargate Command created a device that uses randomized but unnoticeable ultrasonic waves to irritate the Prior's brain into being unable to concentrate on their abilities, thus neutralizing them. Given that Priors tended to be as arrogant as they were powerful, it was VERY satisfying the first time it was used.
1:20 This could also include the Kaber Saber from Freemaker Adventures. Rather than being used as a lightsaber, it was used to amplify and direct force energy. But it was deemed too dangerous by its creator, and was shattered, its pieces hidden. (It seems to mostly appeal to power-hungry sith types, naturally. Palpatine was very intent on claiming it for himself.) (I know they've said the kyber saber isn't canon, but it still seems to fit that description nicely.)
I never took the Ysalamiri as being disconnected from the force. I always figured they were naturally using the force to create a bubble to hide from predators. If they were disconnected then that would mean if you killed them the bubble would still be around because it's not something they generate.
That still doesn't make sense. In such a bubble, they wouldn't be able to keep using the Force to continually maintain that bubble. That's even before getting into how it should be impossible for an individual creature to naturally have the kind of power needed to continually manipulate the Force for its entire life (at least with a lifespan longer than a mayfly). I agree that it was implied to be a specific generating ability rather than them being disconnected, but it's an ability not related to using the Force. However, Lucas is right that any living creature should still probably not be able to have such an ability.
@@Compucles In this case I have to disagree with George. It's not impossible to use the force permanently because every self aware being that we've seen use the force has treated it more like a physical ability instead of a mental skill so they've been subconsciously putting limits on themselves. With a animal that limitation wouldn't exist. It really doesn't matter how the ability specifically works because there are a lot of abilities that don't make sense when you actually think about it.
The Ysalamir ability to repel the Force could be retconned into being a Force ability. The predators were so skilled in the Force that they became even more skilled in the Force to survive.
Using the Force to create a zone unaffected by Force manipulation doesn't make sense. If the Force can't be used in the surrounding area, then it can't be used to maintain the negative zone. At best, such an ability could only be used to create a momentary disruptive pulse, like some kind of Force EMP that only has short-term effects. Although, that would pretty interesting in itself.
In the Clone Wars young adult novels from Legends, Count Dooku and the Separatists tried to revive a Sith Superweapon called the Dark Reaper, which drained the living force from anyone around it, essentially turning the Jedi's own powers against them through the Dark Side through turning that force energy into weaponry. It also appeared in the 2003 Clone Wars video game. The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be...unnatural.
Ysalamiri did not actually negate the Force; since all existence was infused with Force energy, this would not be possible. Rather, they projected a bubble inside which users were unable to exert any influence over the Force. From Wookieepedia
True, but a living creature bound to the Force being able to restrict the Force in such a way is still somewhat contradictory and very controversial at best.
@@Compucles But the creature doesn't restrict the Force, only Force users. However i know that is a concept that many don't like; but i like how Timothy Zahn sees the Force, with Chiss Sky-Walkers, Ysalamiri ecc...his books are more science-fiction than fantasy.
Q&A: If you can't have Force sensitive droids an Anakin Skywalker became more machine as Vader how much of him would have be machine before he would lose the force? Also if he was like turned into a cyborg like Grievous would have kept or lost the force?
Great video guys, as per usual. Would the "first kind" which possess the spirit of a Force user also include Kylo Ren's understanding of Anakin's Vader helmet? I say it that way because we later find out that Palpatine was "every voice [Kylo] ever heard" so it doesn't actually contain the essence of Anakin or Vader ever. This was actually one of my problems with The Force Awakens, if Kylo Ren thinks that he is completing the work of his grandfather, why doesn't Anakin, whom we know has materialized in the force just show up and correct him. I know it takes a great deal of effort and they can't just do it at will but really? During his whole misguided period from fighting Luke to burning down the Jedi Temple, to becoming a willing apprentice to, and pawn of, Snoke (and by proxy Palpatine himself) to assisting with the destruction of several Repulic planets in the Hasnian system including Starkiller base itself? Anakin couldn't materialize during that whole time and set him straight? Not plausible. In any event, thanks for the content and keep up the great work.
Why it may still be revealed in future material if at some point in time Anakin did reach out to Kylo, I don't think it would have done anything significant. Kylo Ren idolized Darth Vader, not Anakin Skywalker. He never cared about the person he was before and after his turn to the dark. So Anakin's words would likely have less effect on him than Han's.
We know that the Universe bis all about balance. The Force is no different. Life makes the Force grow/get stronger. So it is likely that their are things that limit/suppress the growth/connection to the Force. Everything has its opposite: light and dark, positive and negative, yin and yang.
Yeah, I can understand why George Lucas doesn't like the ysalamiri. Although it's not exactly the same thing, and there were some extenuating circumstances, does Lucas also dislike the Yuuzhan Vong for a similar reason?
I wonder what the leveler/nameless would do to a sith lord since they are more accustomed to fear. The absence of the dark side is my only real complaint for the high republic. I just started phase 2 n cant wait for phase 3
i think this is the only sw channel that actually talks about the high republic so kudos
Star Wars on High is a good one.
Bc it doesnt deserve more than explanation

Thank you for doing this. When they mentioned a Sith Artifact in Into the Dark I assumed they meant Momin’s Mask but I wasn’t sure.
yes
from a legends fan, it feels so good hearing you talk about Exar Kun and Freedon Nadd
