      Hi,
      I use both terrafiber mats and soil.
      The terrafiber mats are great because you can harvest right down to the mat without getting soil in your microgreens ( great for selling withouthavingto worry about soil getting mixed in.. They do grow well.
      Soil, on the other hand, is readily available and also works well. I use soil now that I'm not selling my product.

    • @Growwiththelaplantes
      @Growwiththelaplantes  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spring Hill Farms Do you place pieces of insulation over the seeds with adequate weight on top (about 15lb-20lb). Sunflower is my most difficult crop, of the common microgreens. I have a lot of problems, but actual germination isn’t one of them. Problems with a lot of mold

    • @Growwiththelaplantes
      @Growwiththelaplantes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We don't insulate (maybe I'll try that as well) we do 15 lb weight, and never have mold but I'm wondering if maybe my seed isnt good and that's why they aren't germinating. I'm going to try again.

    • @matthewdavis6741
      @matthewdavis6741 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spring Hill Farms Yes, I’ve had bad seed too. I saw a study that said anywhere from 5-20% of sunflower seeds won’t germinate. Could have just had a bad dice roll on the odds with your seed. I’d definitely recommend making a new order, either from a different supplier, or contacting the same supplier and getting it from a different batch. As for the insulation Brent has good videos on how to use them. I don’t want to steal his thunder.

    There are several not so good reviews on the terrafiber product on Amazon, so I didn't purchase the roll. One says that it's not thick enough and is either too dry or wet. And the one that changed my mind says, "no noticeable activity on the mat. Product seems highly ineffective, also gives off a strong odor when wet that smells to me like urine". He did a trial for 6 days. I'll continue to use polyester fiber batting for growing microgreens. It's clean, doesn't fall apart, and no organic material to turn bad from decaying and/or contaminated material. Polyester batting is used to put in between material in clothing and quilt bedspreads for insulation and can be bought in low medium and high loft. Medium is just right at about 1/4in thickness.

    Have you grown other microgreens besides peas in the mesh bottom trays? Just curious if that tray increases their yields too.
    Is there any noticeable difference in taste or texture keeping the peas in the dark for so long? I see that makes them grow taller. Maybe they would prefer less hours of direct lighting when uncovered?

    I have a question because I have my grow room also set up in my house. How do you deal with the sort of funky smell that the greens produce? Yes I do grow in organic soil. Do you think that’s the source of the odor? I wasn’t sure if certain greens that are close to or right at their maturity days start to put off a funny smell. Other people might not notice it but to me I don’t like it

    One more comment, as I got deeper into the video. I would use taller domes (buy actual clear mini greenhouse domes about 8-10 inches tall and spray paint them). I’ve reached 14-16 inch pea shoots. Brent actually commented that he had never seen a pea shoot so big. Increased yields per tray. Customers loved them. A few of them used them as noodles because they were so long.

    • @Growwiththelaplantes
      @Growwiththelaplantes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, we are going to be purchasing some clear domes to spray black.we just haven't got around to it yet. Our customers tend to like the shorter peas as apposed to the tall.

    • @lavendergal2508
      @lavendergal2508 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure spray painting them fits into the organic model? Are there any toxins from the spray? Everything else has to be food grade I would think that the spray meeting spray paint must be as well which I don’t think there such a thing

      Spring Hill Farms are you trying on terra fiber? I’ve found them to really only like soil. I grow everything hydroponically with mesh trays and biostrate. So what I’ve done that works amazing for me is I place a layer or two of burlap down then a skim coat...maybe 1/4” of soil on top of the burlap then the seeds. Then place it inside the solid tray for bottom watering. It works great for me every time. The burlap is to keep the soil out of the water below and the soil is to trick the sunflowers giving them what they want.

      No, we dont use nutrients while misting. Just straight water. Nutrients are added once out of blackout in bottom watering.

      @@Growwiththelaplantes Hi, thanks again for this awesome video! From start to finish (10 days), nutrients are added just only one time like you showed in the video? I am completely new to this. Thanks! :)

    Do you reuse the mats? Thanks for the videos!! I always enjoy.

      Good morning! I don't reuse the mats, but others have said they do after cleaning and sanitizing. I suppose if we didn't grow as much as we do, I would have the time to spend on cleaning them. Thanks so much for watching!

    Are these mat reusable . They are expensive and if you need to keep buying them,nutrients and seeds I don't know if there is much money made at it.

    • @Growwiththelaplantes
      @Growwiththelaplantes  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some have reused them, but I have not. My mat cost me $2.10, seed cost pennies per tray, and nutrients, next to nothing. If I'm making an additional $12.00 per tray (total $25.00 per tray) it's all good in my world!

    Soil is way less expensive though. I see only 10 mats on Amazon for $30, wow.

      I am sure you can reuse these terra fibre mats again and again after thoroughly washing them.
