    So I want to clear up a few things.
    Flatpak and rhino-pkg currently have issues with rpk not being able to find Flatpak packages.
    Snaps and flatpaks are not preinstalled however in the setup wizard (which wasn’t shown in the video. If it did not work for you please let us know) you get the option to enable them graphically.
    Pacstall currently had a breaking change and while most packages migrated smoothly, some such as blender-bin did not unfortunately, but this should be solved now.
    RPK does invoke Pacstall as well, and so you do not need to run “Pacstall -I” and rather can run “rhino-pkg install” for pacscripts.
    PS: you can use “rpk” instead of typing “rhino-pkg” :)
    Great video!

    Hello, Pacstall dev here. The issue you faced with "blender-bin" happened due to an edge case we didn't account for during a recent migration.
    It has now been fixed, along with 8 more packages that had the same issue.
    Also, just a minor correction of what you said on 8:54, "-bin" packages use the pre-built binaries provided by the original devs (same with "-deb" and "-app"), while "-git" packages build the binaries from the latest source.

      How is this unique and not "rethemed" other than it's stripped down ubuntu with an XFCE skin on top and Pacstall on it. The "easier" thing is their own pkgmng/universal helper (since it's looks more like a YAY rather than its own package manager with their own specific packages) that pulls matches from all those listed sources when you try to get a package, which is pretty cool and comfortable it seems. If there's an issue how that plays out, idk.
      But couldn't they have just made the project open on github for Debian/Ubuntu/Ubuntu based users and call it a day? Why spin up yet another distro?

      @@rhinolinuxHello! May I provide you with feedback regarding the project?
      The Unicorn desktop is pretty nice in terms of creating a cohesive vision for the OS, but I miss the Arch-like “building from square one” approach present in Rolling Rhino Remix’s ISO, deciding to use KDE or a tiling window manager instead of your Unicorn desktop, skinning, ricing them to my liking and choosing what programs I’d like to use for my own use cases.
      I hope you listen to my feedback and make a Clean/Tinkerer Edition ISO of the distro available to use for those who like building up a rolling release Ubuntu system from a slim, minimal base.
      Thank you!

    • @rhinolinux
      @rhinolinux ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@commentarysheep So a version of Rhino Linux like this already exists, it's only available for the Raspberry Pi at the moment, though.
      We do have plans in our roadmap to include a "server" version of Rhino Linux for mainstream x86_64 and ARM64 devices, however this is a bit of the ways off.

    A great distro, I believe it will grow even more with the evolution of UI to something more homogeneous, as it happens in VanillaOS, Elementary, Pop!OS, etc. and moving away from the complexity of distros like Manjaro or even interfaces that refer to the style widespread with windows xp, vista and 7, like all the "old school" ones (xfce, mate, etc.) or... Plasma 😷

    @LisandroCarmona ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I used Rhino in the past, and it can't be compared with Arch as apt is a nightmare on dependencies management compared to pacman. In a rolling release, sooner or later you regret having apt as the package manager.

    Unless they're pulling packages from a testing branch of Ubuntu and making them stable and/or creating their own packages, which both of those tasks are immense work, this is yet another distro that just calls itself one under the guise of convenience and "friendliness".
    But I could be mistaken, in which case I'd suggest to the creator to spend 1 or 2 weeks more with the distros, go deeper and see how they actually differ and what you can do from other distros, especially in this case ubuntu based since there are so many, and Ubuntu itself.

    There are a few things that make it look like Xfce - the wonky sized icons in the tray for one. Although, I have to say they did a pretty good job. Plank is used for the dock on the side. It's weird though seeing the Rhino icons along side regular icons.

      Funny, I was just trying xfce on another distro, and I found icon sizes on the panel really frustrating--some changed size when you resized the panel, some didn't, you could reconfigure them to change size but then some got cartoonishly big, etc. It was enough to convince me to go back to Cinnamon.

    A few mistakes you made in tje video:
    1.) Pacstall is a different project, not affiliated with the Rhino Linux team
    2.) Pacstall is the package manager for the AUR-like community repository made for Ubuntu
    3.) Nala IS the front-end they used in the updater prompt and is one of the two APT front-end options available in Rhino Linux alongside rhino-pkg.
    Other than that, nice video!
    Although I’ve already moved on to Arch Linux, I appreciate the effort these guys are putting into their craft, trying to make a rolling release Ubuntu for those who like both the convenience of Ubuntu and its graphical utilities and the bleeding-edge packages and community repos of Arch Linux.
    Although I miss the customisibility aspect from this distro; maybe they could make an ISO like what they offered in Rolling Rhino Remix; a clean CLI install with you deciding what to install and use as your GUI and toolchain.

    • @rhinolinux
      @rhinolinux ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So Pacstall is not directly related to the Rhino Linux project, however Elsie, the founder & lead dev, is a member of the Rhino Linux development team. Along with that, another member of the Pacstall team, Wizard28, is also on our team officially.
      We do plan to ship a server ISO for x86 and ARM, which will provide a disk image with no desktop environment, however we will continue to only officially support Unicorn as our desktop environment for a handful of reasons such as:
      1. We have a specific vision for the desktop we want to push, and chose a base with the most foundations to provide a non-breaking experience on the devel branch.
      2.Bug fixing every issue that occurs on every DE is way too much for our small dev team.
      3.Packaging GNOME, KDE, etc to be compatible with our current customizations and core packaging, or creating alternative packaging for it, would be a pain.
      If you wish to install Rhino Linux and then install your own desktop environment ontop of that, you can run "pacstall -PI rhino-server-core" to remove Unicorn and then build from there. One of our developers actually daily drives RhiGNOME :)
