  • Complete mechanical restoration on this ‘93 Specialized Stumpjumper FS. Theo was originally intended to be a display build for a client, but they changed direction, and it’s now a rideable bike with period-correct modifications.
So, we built it as a typical trail bike circa 1996. Updates include a later M737 cassette set up as 7-speed to match the original LX shifters, titanium Action Tec triple chain rings on a slightly newer XT crank and UN-72 BB, titanium Ringle skewers and seat post q/r. As well as a titanium rail Flite saddle, Control Tech seat post and Control Stix bar ends. We also added 1996-ish Litespeed titanium bars. New Shimano cables, housings, brake pads, and chain. Reissued Panaracer Smoke and Dart tires. Bottle cage is period correct. Bottle boss bolts are modern purple anodized pieces. Purple anodized Cable Cherries are from Forager Cycles.
The Manitou 2 fork has been rebuilt by us with our own replacement USA- made elastomers and fork seals.
We believe that this, and the M2 (alloy frame) Stumpjumper FS were the top hardtail mountain bikes in Specialized’s 1993 lineup. If you wanted steel, this was it. These came with a primarily LX gruppo. The exception being an XT rear derailleur.
The idea was to restore and build a bike that would have pretty typical higher end mods that a serious trail rider would’ve made back in the day.

I bought the same bike brand new in July of 1993! I still own it. I went with red accents for mine, matched the outline of the lettering and I still love the look.

I bet this thing rides extremely nicely. Nicely restored - and yes - this is exactly how they would have looked/ been spec'd on the cross-country track back in the day.

Absolutely love it. I'm currently in the middle of a 93 Giant Cadex also with Manitou 2s, which need a rebuild. It was definitely my favorite era for mountain bikes.

I had this bike back in 93. I specked it with purple ano parts, full LX components, Rock Shock etc.. Made it as light as possible at 21lbs. Only have 1 picture of it. Event photo that was taken while I was racing in a NORBA XC event in while stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Raced multiple XC events until it was stolen in 95. Replaced with a GT RTS 2, converted to DH and never looked back at XC.

That’s awesome! I really love hearing BITD stories like this. Thanks so much for sharing! Must’ve been incredible racing in Hawaii in the NORBA days. The RTS was a serious piece of equipment too. Take care!

Maybe you can help me. I also owned I believe year 96-97 Specialized Limited Edition Stumpjumper M2 Comp that had chameleon paint. (Flopped from metallic dark green to metallic burgundy). Red Rock shock, not the silver or common gold color. Tried finding a brochure that showed the bike but can't seem to find it. Bought in Hawaii. Sold to a friend in WA state where it was stolen the same week he bought it.

I will fully admit that my Specialized knowledge is pretty weak. Schwinn and Cannondale are in my wheelhouse. I‘be only had experience with one M2 and it was black. Im afraid I’m no help, but I will stay on the lookout for one with the flip flop colorway for you.

Why the hell are people taking away gears? Can you say cross Channing?

Definitely gotta keep an eye out for gear stealers. I wouldn’t want to cross Channing either! Thanks for checking out the video!
