A very good Tip for those of you still getting the Crucible kills: you can use your sword WITHOUT ANY AMMO! It just takes 2 hits to kill but it counts towards your quest

4:30 there are three major hive enemies accessible like this: from spawn, look to the left, toward a patrol beacon. The beacon is next to a storage crate (or a truck, I forget which). Head toward the building next to the beacon. Inside this small metal roof, there are stairs. If you follow the stairs you should find a Hallowed Knight and two Hallowed Alcolytes - these are all majors.
Dark Drinker makes you go full Kratos, I fucking love it. I didn't realise what my Bolt Caster was doing until I accidentally killed a Vandala across the map.
Few things to note that weren't mentioned: • When choosing a sword, keep in mind what class you are using. Because when the step that requires 500 ability kills comes up. You might not want to be stuck with a bad match (ex: Void kills as a Titan requires using Defender Bubble, yeah, not fun) • Also when farming kills for the 500 don't do 'The Dark Beyond' like in the video (That's so 2014), do 'Seige of the Warmind' (1000 times better) • And finally for farming planetary materials. Find one near a transition zone, and collect it, then transition to new area, then return to previous zone to find the material respawned. It's the quickest way to farm them
+dukezap1 I ran around skywatch for my 10 material and got it in three hours so it might be ineffective for spinmetal farming but others i believe its easier to hunt around for them.
When choosing a sword element, keep in mind your class and what subclass goes withthe sword's element to make it the easiest possible. For example: If you're a hunter, you're gonna want to choose arc edge cause blink strike does arc damage and can recharge super fast. I made the mistake of choosing sol edge, and throwing knives don't do solar damage unless the enemy is killed with the DOT effect given by incendiary blade. You're gonna need to get 3-5 kills per 1%, so 300 ability kills at the least. Not fun when all you have is a grenade and 3-4 golden gun shots. Also, the tripmine doesn't do solar damage either, and I recommend having the armor-piercing perk thing on golden gun, and lining up your shots so it goes through multiple enemies at once. I think the best swords for each class are Hunter-Arc, Titan-Solar, and Warlock-Void.
It's cool how bungle deslgned the swords to match the new subclasses. Void exotic edge: nightstalker, the spin would be really useful when there are a bunch of teatherd enemies grouped up. Solar exotic edge: sunbreaker. The heavy strike combined with melting point would be devestating to pretty much any boss. Arc exotic edge: stormcaller. I don't personally use the warlock, but I know it has a long range melee, so I guess since the frisbee is long range it fits with it ( someone comment down below if you can think of anything matching the warlock with the arc sword). FYI Tip... you can do this in the starting room of the Dreadnaught, there are 3 rooms that spawn chests, just rotate through them, and it will be done. First is right underneath the spawn, A Hive spawn room in the middle, and the Spawn room with the special chest along the wall.
With the crucible kills part I just did control (using the control as a distraction), locate and wait for Heavy Ammo (time- 7:00), grab it as soon as I can, and then use it until I die. After I lose the ammo I just go back to orbit and then go back into a new game. This takes 30 or so min if you get 2-3 kills per game.
Some things to clarify here: It is possible to avoid doing the crucible/major/knight portion three times. Acquire all three swords by unlocking them, one on each character. Transfer all swords to one character (I recommend warlock or hunter for grenade on respawn armor exotics) and then level them all up to 280 on that one character before speaking with Shaxx. Once all swords at or above 280, accept the quest from Shaxx. He will give you one quest for the crucible kills and following that one quest to kill the knight. Once completed, he will then give you three quests, one for each of the gathering materials section. Complete them all and turn them in before the next armsday. On armsday you'll get three new quests to kill the darkblade and one of his knights. If you kill the darkblade and all three of his knights in 30 second time span to do it in one strike you can redeem all three quests, or you can repeat the strike as needed killing one or two knights and then the darkblade at a time. This is a nice way to avoid having to do crucible kills 25 for each sword and killing the knight more than once. When infusing your sword to 280, you only need one weapon above 280 to get the quest. If you stagger and buff the infusions with lower light level blues first, you can go from 273ish to 280 with a single 280. Most people who've infused items probably already realize this. During the crucible section, you can go into rumble with up to two people in your fireteam and use the sword with no energy to get kills. Just take turns whacking each other with the hilt. It is a two hit melee kill and counts towards the bounty. I did this in two games with a buddy. During the fight with the darkblade, you need to kill the darkblade within 30 seconds of killing your respective knight. You don't have to kill both within 30 seconds of dropping down.
in the crucible part, you dont NEED heavy ammo. You can kill people with the hilt of the sword and it still counts. Granted it takes two hits and it's basically a melee attack with slightly less range, it still works and can shorten the time it takes to complete that part of the step.
Well, here's two little tips if someone around here doesn't know already; 1. when getting the 25 guardian kills in the crucible you don't need heavy ammo for your kill to count. You can smash the guardian's face in with the hilt of your sword but be warned it takes two hits and the reset time between hits is large. 2. When farming for the rare materials, if you have a ghost with the appropriate node detection you can zoom in with a sniper and see all markers for all nodes in your current area. Happy Farming!
So yeah, the Bolt caster is the Moonlight Greatsword from the Souls' games. Love the nod to it. Anyone play the souls games also see the Ornstein and Smough reference in the Shield Brothers strike? Very similar encounter.
FYI: Don't need to wait for Heavy on Sword. You can Arm the Sword with no Ammo and punch people with it. It's stronger than your normal melee [weaker than your ability melee though] and has a huge wind up, but has a range, tracks people and stops 'em flat when they're moving. Kills with the sword but no ammo DO count.
FYI... you do NOT need heavy ammo to use your sword. You can melee with just the hilt for enough damage to kill an unshielded Guardian. Soften with your primary, finish with a hilt-smack. Makes the Crucible portion go so much faster. I also found objective game modes to be better for this, since you can predict enemy player movement a lot better.
The fastest way to farm the rare materials is to use the Treasure Key method where you pick up the material, leave the area and come back to the same spot and the material will be collectible again
I wonder how Bolt Caster will play out in Crucible. The other two swords you have to get close to use their special abilities, but Bolt Caster is ranged. Assuming the special ability only takes one energy from the sword, and assuming the arc shuriken is a one hit kill in Crucible, this could potentially be the best heavy weapon.
just so you know Ecthar can be damaged by anything, its just his shield that can only be damaged by the sword, once his shields are down you can use your guns, grenades, supers, etc.
That major night Ecthar is the knight from one of the first cutscenes that says, "Their leaders belong to you...the rest await extermanation." Or so I think I might be wrong.
Raze-lighter definitely is the best boss or major killer, the weapon just melts enemies, Dark-Drinker is amazing at add clearing man my friend just cleans away anything that spawns in, haven't found the super use for bolt-caster the range disc seems great to deal with enemies afar that you can't get too, but it seems more niche. All three tho are amazing. :)
Few things about the steps to these quests; 1: your sword has to have 280 attack AND be fully upgraded in order for you to receive the exotic quest 2: the sword of oryx can take damage from any weapons; however, his shield must be destroyed by swords. Not super important stuff, but may clear up some confusion somewhere along the line if anyone sees this comment.
Tip for farming: use the nighstalker subclass and equipt the perk that gives you increased radar, you can now see planetary materials on your radar, it can cut farming time in half and you can always move the materials around your characters
QUESTION WITH THE QUEST (LAST STEP) My question is the last step. You need to do the darkblade strike, but the difficulty 300 light level. If I am correct, with DarkBlade, 3 knights with swords will spawn. Depending on your elemntal sword, you kill either the Solar, Arc or Void one, but once you kill one, DarkBlade and the remaining 2 MUST die in 30 secodns or it will fail. Here is my question First, do these Knights die ONLY by the sword? or can they die by anything? And my second one, what if in my team I have one person with the ARC SWORD, but the remaining 2 (me and my friend) have the VOID SWORD? If I kill the void Knight, will my friend also get it, or do we have to repeat but he kills it? Because if my assumptiosna re wrong, then I am -blam!-ed because I have a void sword as my friend. I do not want to repeat, and if the solar knight can ONLY die by the solar sword, we have tog et someone else -__-
does anyone know if the exotic swords have that same move that the legendaries have where you press R2 in the air to do a horizontal-like swing that uses up 2 energy or is completely replaced with that unique move?
Since a lot of people are recommending to use the sword in PvP without energy, here's a tip that goes along with that. Jump before you swing it the first time and you can swing it the 2nd time much faster. (jump and then while in the air swing and you won't have to wait for the recovery animation to end to swing again)
Just a note for everybody in the crucible, since you can still use your sword and you kill someone with your sword even without heavy ammo it will count towards your crucible kills progress :3.
The sunless cell strategy I find best is take out the knight or knights that doesnt have the element of your sword first. If you and the 2 other people all have different swords then all knights must remain alive but if 2 people have ark and one has solar then take out the void (or if all have solar then arc knight as well) when he appears. Also the arc knight comes out first and is a sword knight, the void knight comes out second and is a boomer, the solar knight comes out last and is a taken.
Does this work only with the sword you choosed in the beginning of the questline.. because i dismanteld mine (arc) and later i bought an solar one, upgraded it to 280 but nothing happened.. sry for bad english :D
for those interested... Hunter - Arc Sword - Arc Bolt kills low tier enemies quickly, blink strike now has arc damage and with fast twitch it recharges quickly, blade dancing is an obvious Titan - Solar Sword - Hammers of Doom, Firey Punches, strong Fire grenades Warlock - Void - the second grenade (can't remember the name) in tight corridors are deadly, Surge helps recharge grenades, and Voidbomb + Bad Juju + Obsidian Mind if you have those is just stupid fun and easy. hope that helps anyone
I'm confused. how do you upgrade your weapons instantly with motes? I haven't seen anything that let's me do it but people seem to be saying you can upgrade weapons instantly with motes
Yes. You CAN get the rare materials from chests. I've done it. I've only gotten one from those on Mars but I've done it. And it took 250 material pick ups to get me my 10
Pro tip, don't get the void sword as a titan. Also Echtar can be killed with any weapon/ability, it's his shield that has to be taken down with a sword.
so lets say i have the void sword , if my team kills the other two (solar and arc) first ,will the timer start or will it only start once i kill the void shield knight?
Sublime engrams are the Playstation exclusive armour sets. Do not get rid of them as they drop very rarely. I'm just missing the last piece for my Hunter, but missing all of them for my Titan and Warlock :-(
So if you are looking to farm hadium flakes or planetary materials also note that if you bring up your ghost, the pulse that shows you invisible bridges will also highlight chests and materials on your map.

There is a slightly better method for the Majors. The very first mission of the story, the level 2 mission with the Archon. The Archon counts as 5 Majors, and it also requires you to kill every enemy for the checkpoint to break. This means you go in, shoot him to around 10~20% with an Auto Rifle so you can inch his HP easily, then hit him once or twice with the blade. Orbit, repeat. I think this better than the Hive Majors simply because it provides enough fodder to give ammo, whilst assuring a spawn each time. It's 1 point less than 2 rounds of Hive but it has consistency and ammo to keep you going infinitely. I didn't time it however, so it may~ be slower. Still, it was my preferred method. :x Other than that, you can use your hilt to kill things in Crucible, which as a Hunter/Bladedancer is easy due to invis. Also, the Knight's Shields can't be hurt by anything but your sword, his HP can, though bullets won't prevent his shield regen. So you can shoot, but only for like 5 seconds at a time, a clip or so is about all ya get.
I was really hoping you'd mention this cause most people aren't getting it: WHEN YOU INFUSE YOUR LEGENDARY TO 280, A NEW UPGRADE APPEARS. YOU HAVE TO GET THAT UPGRADE TO START THE EXOTIC QUEST.
And word to people who are struggling and want all the exotic swords. Do it ONLY on one character. Yes one character. After completing pretty much all the steps of one sword, if you put the other 2 swords on that character and then level then up to over 280 light, you will not have to do the crucible kills over again, but you will only have to obtain the materials and super kills and then will be able to turn it in to the crucible master and then will only have to wait until arms day, then you can continue after that to finish by doing the killing on the darkblade quest.
For the ability kills, I would recommend the first section of Siege of the Warmind over The Dark Beyond. As a Nightstalker hunter I was able to get roughly 3-6% of my ability kills per run there, vs 1-2% on Dark Beyond. There is also a death pit you can jump into and it is harder to accidentally kill the knight that triggers the checkpoint.
Pro tip: If you find a chest in the entryway towards "the Faunts", you can enter the Faunts area, come back into the Mausoleum, and collect the chest again. While this is a glitch (and will most likely be patched), if you're looking to simply get this done right away, take advantage of it.

For the crucible part. You can get kills with just the handle. It's a two hit kill, but still not that hard. Finished it in two games
Another thing to be aware of: Ecthar only has to have his shields dropped by a sword. Once his shield is down, you can damage him as normal.

That won't work as efficiently because you don't get the speed or range that'll save your ass more than thrice per match.

So yeah, the Bolt caster is the Moonlight Greatsword from the Souls' games. Love the nod to it. Anyone play the souls games also see the Ornstein and Smough reference in the Shield Brothers strike? Very similar encounter.

FYI: Don't need to wait for Heavy on Sword. You can Arm the Sword with no Ammo and punch people with it. It's stronger than your normal melee [weaker than your ability melee though] and has a huge wind up, but has a range, tracks people and stops 'em flat when they're moving. Kills with the sword but no ammo DO count.
FYI... you do NOT need heavy ammo to use your sword. You can melee with just the hilt for enough damage to kill an unshielded Guardian. Soften with your primary, finish with a hilt-smack. Makes the Crucible portion go so much faster. I also found objective game modes to be better for this, since you can predict enemy player movement a lot better.

The fastest way to farm the rare materials is to use the Treasure Key method where you pick up the material, leave the area and come back to the same spot and the material will be collectible again
I wonder how Bolt Caster will play out in Crucible. The other two swords you have to get close to use their special abilities, but Bolt Caster is ranged. Assuming the special ability only takes one energy from the sword, and assuming the arc shuriken is a one hit kill in Crucible, this could potentially be the best heavy weapon.

just so you know Ecthar can be damaged by anything, its just his shield that can only be damaged by the sword, once his shields are down you can use your guns, grenades, supers, etc.

Raze-lighter definitely is the best boss or major killer, the weapon just melts enemies, Dark-Drinker is amazing at add clearing man my friend just cleans away anything that spawns in, haven't found the super use for bolt-caster the range disc seems great to deal with enemies afar that you can't get too, but it seems more niche. All three tho are amazing. :)
Few things about the steps to these quests;
1: your sword has to have 280 attack AND be fully upgraded in order for you to receive the exotic quest
2: the sword of oryx can take damage from any weapons; however, his shield must be destroyed by swords.
Not super important stuff, but may clear up some confusion somewhere along the line if anyone sees this comment.
its worth mentioning that being a nightstalker with keen scout does help as well for all you hunters out there
Tip for farming: use the nighstalker subclass and equipt the perk that gives you increased radar, you can now see planetary materials on your radar, it can cut farming time in half and you can always move the materials around your characters
QUESTION WITH THE QUEST (LAST STEP)
My question is the last step. You need to do the darkblade strike, but the difficulty 300 light level.
If I am correct, with DarkBlade, 3 knights with swords will spawn. Depending on your elemntal sword, you kill either the Solar, Arc or Void one, but once you kill one, DarkBlade and the remaining 2 MUST die in 30 secodns or it will fail.
Here is my question
First, do these Knights die ONLY by the sword? or can they die by anything?
And my second one, what if in my team I have one person with the ARC SWORD, but the remaining 2 (me and my friend) have the VOID SWORD? If I kill the void Knight, will my friend also get it, or do we have to repeat but he kills it?
Because if my assumptiosna re wrong, then I am -blam!-ed because I have a void sword as my friend. I do not want to repeat, and if the solar knight can ONLY die by the solar sword, we have tog et someone else -__-

does anyone know if the exotic swords have that same move that the legendaries have where you press R2 in the air to do a horizontal-like swing that uses up 2 energy or is completely replaced with that unique move?
IMO Raze-Lighter has the least powerful R2 attack among the 3 exotic swords. All are really fun to use though.
Since a lot of people are recommending to use the sword in PvP without energy, here's a tip that goes along with that.
Jump before you swing it the first time and you can swing it the 2nd time much faster. (jump and then while in the air swing and you won't have to wait for the recovery animation to end to swing again)
Just a note for everybody in the crucible, since you can still use your sword and you kill someone with your sword even without heavy ammo it will count towards your crucible kills progress :3.
So glad I took the Arc Edge. That special attack looks awesome.
The sunless cell strategy I find best is take out the knight or knights that doesnt have the element of your sword first. If you and the 2 other people all have different swords then all knights must remain alive but if 2 people have ark and one has solar then take out the void (or if all have solar then arc knight as well) when he appears. Also the arc knight comes out first and is a sword knight, the void knight comes out second and is a boomer, the solar knight comes out last and is a taken.

The Bolt Caster is too good !! Especially during the Black Spindle Quest.
Does this work only with the sword you choosed in the beginning of the questline.. because i dismanteld mine (arc) and later i bought an solar one, upgraded it to 280 but nothing happened..

Hereafter is a godsend for the resource step - basically amplifies your Ghost to an insane degree when you scope in.
You can also get crucible kills with the sword when it's empty. It'll still count.
You can use the sword with Or without the heavy
for those interested...
Hunter - Arc Sword - Arc Bolt kills low tier enemies quickly, blink strike now has arc damage and with fast twitch it recharges quickly, blade dancing is an obvious
Titan - Solar Sword - Hammers of Doom, Firey Punches, strong Fire grenades
Warlock - Void - the second grenade (can't remember the name) in tight corridors are deadly, Surge helps recharge grenades, and Voidbomb + Bad Juju + Obsidian Mind if you have those is just stupid fun and easy.

Yes. You CAN get the rare materials from chests. I've done it. I've only gotten one from those on Mars but I've done it. And it took 250 material pick ups to get me my 10

Pro tip, don't get the void sword as a titan.
Also Echtar can be killed with any weapon/ability, it's his shield that has to be taken down with a sword.
so lets say i have the void sword , if my team kills the other two (solar and arc) first ,will the timer start or will it only start once i kill the void shield knight?
rather important note. if your a hunter, pull out your nightstalker for advanced radar. makes material hunting a breeze.
so the uses are:
solar: heavy damage

Sublime engrams are the Playstation exclusive armour sets. Do not get rid of them as they drop very rarely. I'm just missing the last piece for my Hunter, but missing all of them for my Titan and Warlock :-(

There is a slightly better method for the Majors. The very first mission of the story, the level 2 mission with the Archon. The Archon counts as 5 Majors, and it also requires you to kill every enemy for the checkpoint to break. This means you go in, shoot him to around 10~20% with an Auto Rifle so you can inch his HP easily, then hit him once or twice with the blade. Orbit, repeat.
I think this better than the Hive Majors simply because it provides enough fodder to give ammo, whilst assuring a spawn each time. It's 1 point less than 2 rounds of Hive but it has consistency and ammo to keep you going infinitely. I didn't time it however, so it may~ be slower. Still, it was my preferred method. :x
Other than that, you can use your hilt to kill things in Crucible, which as a Hunter/Bladedancer is easy due to invis. Also, the Knight's Shields can't be hurt by anything but your sword, his HP can, though bullets won't prevent his shield regen. So you can shoot, but only for like 5 seconds at a time, a clip or so is about all ya get.

I was really hoping you'd mention this cause most people aren't getting it: WHEN YOU INFUSE YOUR LEGENDARY TO 280, A NEW UPGRADE APPEARS. YOU HAVE TO GET THAT UPGRADE TO START THE EXOTIC QUEST.
And word to people who are struggling and want all the exotic swords. Do it ONLY on one character. Yes one character. After completing pretty much all the steps of one sword, if you put the other 2 swords on that character and then level then up to over 280 light, you will not have to do the crucible kills over again, but you will only have to obtain the materials and super kills and then will be able to turn it in to the crucible master and then will only have to wait until arms day, then you can continue after that to finish by doing the killing on the darkblade quest.
I'm not getting the quest, I have no other shaxx quests and a 292 fully upgraded void edge. anything wrong?
Do you need to kill all three knights together? I tried this with my friends but it didn't work.
For the ability kills, I would recommend the first section of Siege of the Warmind over The Dark Beyond. As a Nightstalker hunter I was able to get roughly 3-6% of my ability kills per run there, vs 1-2% on Dark Beyond. There is also a death pit you can jump into and it is harder to accidentally kill the knight that triggers the checkpoint.
+Colin Garttmeier I do the Awoken the hive quest on hard, and just kill the thralls when from 50% to 100% in 40 to a hour.
Awoken the Hive quest = The Dark Beyond.
I'm not saying this is better for everyone, but I found more success on Siege of the Warmind.
If you have 3 people in your fireteam with the quest, can only one person kill alak-Hul to finish the quest at a time or does it count for everyone?
Pro tip:
If you find a chest in the entryway towards "the Faunts", you can enter the Faunts area, come back into the Mausoleum, and collect the chest again.
While this is a glitch (and will most likely be patched), if you're looking to simply get this done right away, take advantage of it.
