Aluminum nose piece seems to be a problem for people. I had my husband make the aluminum nose strips. He made a TINY fold on the ends first. He did a beautiful job of making nice flat tight strips. I then unfolded one of the two sides, stitched through the remaining two thicknesses, folded the side back into place. That way, my machine had no problem stitching. Also, when I first stitched the outer fabric, I only went part way down so it is easier to get the aluminum piece into place. I've made 51 to date and still going. Love this mask!!

For the nose piece, fold the ends in first, then the long sides. It is so much faster, less sharp ends, and achieves the same purpose. And actually, I ended up using 4 1/2" piece of floral wire, curling the ends under. After sewing the top seam, I used the seam allowance for a casing and zigzag sewed the wire between the seam allowance and the back side of the mask.

For those worrying about the center seam: I've made a few of these now. They have two layers of interfacing inside. If you fold the seam one way on the main fabric, and the other way on the lining fabric (as she shows in the video), then there is a lot of interfacing going different directions...so a needle hole in one layer is protected by interfacing on another layer. That's harder to describe than I thought, but the layers seem to work to protect pretty well.

Thanks for this clarification, now I can skip fusing a strip of interfacing over the seam which would have been a fiddle. You're a sanity saver.

I'm not sure if anyone suggested this, but in olden days to get a very dense cotton that won't shrink it was boiled for maybe 10 minutes. During that time the fabric shrinks about as much as it can. Than you have a denser non shrink fabric.

Agree. I am using cotton material I have had for years and years and washed it in hot water (50 degrees) twice to shrink. I cant see the difference but it can't hurt. One of those quilt cover projects for the boys at age of 6 years and now in there 40's. Great quality.

I heard the same, it is because sometimes the nurses take them off and later on the same day they put it back on so that way it's more secure so they dont get into their faces the outer side. If we dont have extra cloth to do a diff. side we can put a very small button for the inner side so you can know which side is which.

Jennifer Upton I understand what you are saying about the autoclave, but there is a need to wash the cotton fabric before cutting out the pattern as cotton shrinks and then the finished mask may be too small to fit over N95 masks. For those making them for home use pre - washing is important so they don’t shrink after they are made and it tightens up the weave through washing shrinkage before the fabric is cut out using the pattern. It also removes the sizing film that manufactures use to make the fabric look crisp which people should not be breathing through. Blessings to you and yours to stay healthy.

When I made mine, the sides kind of gapped around my cheeks so I put a small please in each side to make it fit better. You could also create a small dart in each side. I also found that I needed 5-1/2 inches of elastic rather than 5 inches. The mask is comfortable and is easy to wear plus provides good protection. Thank you for the video; visuals are so much easier for me to follow than written instructions.

I used 1-inch fold-over elastic on these masks. 9 inches across the top. 9 inches across the bottom. 9 inches on each end will give you a good fit and go around your ears. Join the end elastic before attaching to end of mask. Put the join off the fabric in case you need to make it shorter. Fits your face a lot better. I wear glasses and no fogging.

Used small pliers to fold edges. Instead of stitching through it, I top-stitched around it after marking with chalk. That was after I broke a needle.

I got my daughter, because she saved sll the shorts and skorts snd dresses jammies, going through her storage in the attic and taking the elastic out and bleaching it. I have also found that my thicker elastic can be split. AND, if you xan get to walmart, there is a strectchy rubber cord that has not been bought out. Its in the beading supplies. I have used decorative elastic and whatever i can get my hands on. Who cares if its hot pink? Bless you for your thoughtfulness and community spirit.

Bleaching it may compromise the elastic. It will break down easily, especially if it’s not new. Regular detergent and hot water would be just fine. When you donate to a hospital, they sanitize them before they use them anyway.

You've provided a ton of useful information here! I especially appreciate that you show the dos AND don'ts. Thank you! I know everyone doesn't have this available, but I've been cutting up leftover sheets of aluminum step flashing for 1/4" x 3.5" nose clips. The sheets come in convenient 5" x 7" sheets, 10 for under $3 from Home Depot. It's a roofing product. However, you need tin snips to cut the metal and a way to file or grind the sharp corners and edges. I use a grinding stone on a Dremel tool. I know it's more time consuming, but it's thicker than aluminum pan material, more durable and won't rust. It I play with the strip, bending it repeatedly (14X) in one place, it will eventually heat up, fatigue and break. However, I find that once I conform my nose clip into my favorite position, I don't need to make any more bends, and I never make sharp bends repeatedly anyway. I handwash the mask in hot soapy water, steam for 5 minutes in the veggie steamer, hang to dry and it's good to go again.

  • @davidobrien9772
    @davidobrien9772 4 ปีที่แล้ว +36

In my testing, the aluminum in the nose piece will break after bending it a couple times. I can see the aluminum breaking just after a couple cycles through the laundry. You can do your own testing to see.
Also in your video, you put pins through your filtering material. To keep the integrity of the filter material, clips are advisable.
You also sewed holes through your filter materials putting on the nose piece. There is a second layer behind it but the front filter material is compromised using this method. I ended up sewing both layers of filter material on the inside layer.
Other than that I was able to follow along and make my own mask!

Another option is using craft pipe cleaners or sometimes called chenille stems, fuzzy sticks. Depending on how long they are they can be folded in half and then in half again. I have found they are not only more comfortable but tend to last fairly well. Also, if just folded in half they will stretch across the bridge of the nose and cheeks. A simple zig-zag stitch over the top secures it to the inside of the outer layer.

I’m not trying to be negative I just want to offer you my experience I have been a surgical nurse for 40 years and that your favorite mask while it fits nicely around the nose it does not cover the cheeks and under the chin. A surgical mask is supposed to protect you from the patient and the patient from you. Your mask has too big of a gap at the cheeks and not enough coverage under the chin. I hope you take my suggestion in the spirit that it’s given. The problem is that with the N95 after about 3hrs you have to take them off because it gets saturated. The ties are better than the elastic but anything will help. I thank everyone here on this forum. God Bless stay safe stay home,

I know that some of you nurses said this is not a life saving mask, but I think it is better than nothing for us out in public that have to pick up meds at pharmacy or go to grocery store. I'm sure you are using this over your N95 mask as a medical provider. I just think if we can make our own and also for medical providers we should wear them. As another lady said, people just sneeze and cough right out in the open!!!! I'm not sick and dont want to infect my parents! They are older andni do errands for them. So I have to protect myself for them. I wear gloves and a mask when I go out to get meds and food for my parents. Other than that I stay home completely! God be with all of you! Such a wonderful sight seeing and hearing us all come together and help where help is needed. Thank you for sharing these patterns! Thank you ladies and gentlemen for coming together in the time of need! Prayers for you all🙏

I have designed masks using non woven interfacing as well.I made the pleated masked but sewed in a piece of floral wire into the seam. Then your machine doesn’t have to sew over wire. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and the link to print the mask. Hooray for printable freezer paper. I have enough stash fabric to last well beyond my demise and plenty of non-woven interfacing as well. I'm hesitant to leave home to go and buy an aluminum disposable pan for the form-fitting nose piece. I have been sewing and quilting for decades, so I intend to make a tiny buttonhole type opening where I can insert 2 or 3 twist-ties for fitting to nose. Those things might rust if washed, so I'd want to have the option to remove before washing. If you have a husband who saves them (from bread bags), you'll have a great supply. Our junk drawer is full of them. A better option would be to use multiple layers of aluminum foil. That would work and be stitch-able. This is a desperate situation and we can 'make-do' with things we have at home. As you pointed out, this is FAR BETTER than NOTHING! RN, OCN retired (and therefore elderly) These masks will certainly provide at least SOME protection from fluid droplet exchange between patient and medical staff. I even have the ear loops in the wise corded elasicand the thinner round onesl

I also would want to be able to remove the wire for washing.
I think any tiny narrow "wire pocket" could work fine just being open at one end. Bc I think the bend over the nose would prevent the wire (or folded tin foil, or whatever) from falling out accidentally. Planning on testing this!

PLEASE READ! "Breathable/waterproof fabric" DOES NOT mean all people can breathe through it! ie my 78-year-old mom making these for herself. IMO... The demo of the breathable/waterproof fabric shows there's a risk of decreased oxygen intake. The person wearing it would feel like they are breathing normally and not realize the problem until they passed out. Here's why - Breathable fabric means the skin can 'breathe' and not get as sweaty (good for rain jackets) - it isn’t intended to breathe through. This is a great video and I really appreciate the extra effort testing patterns and explaining mask pros/cons. I realize the video ‘refers’ to 'breathable' fabric but doesn’t recommend it, so here's where my concern comes from... I worked with the geriatric population for a number of years, my specialty was cognitive testing and safety awareness. There are many seniors doing just fine living independently with minor declines in safety awareness and problem-solving. This is one of those situations that puts them at risk; lots of new information coming at them, higher stress, change in habits and environment. Since they want to be extra careful the waterproof-breathable fabric seems the smart choice and worth the extra effort. Ok, I'll get off my soapbox, I don't mean to offend or insult anyone. THANKS TO EVERYONE MAKING THESE!! Stay safe and home and healthy!

To make a mask like the first one you show fit tighter on smaller heads/faces, twist the elastic that goes over the ear one time. From the side it makes the X shape between the mask and the ear. I use surgical masks all the time because I have Environmental illness and we're them near iron in the soap isle, in bathrooms that use chemical airfresheners etc..

I am so loving this version of a mask and have made multiple ones for my family. I improvised a little because my machine will not sew through the aluminum pie pans. I purchased 1-inch prong fastener bases at Office Depot (Item 102-582 if anyone is interested.) and made a casing that I sewed to the inner side of the mask. I sewed the two long sides and one of the short sides to the mask and left one short side open so it could be removed for washing and drying. I'm not sure that is necessary, but didn't want it to melt in the dryer! I was just reviewing the entire video again and noted that at about 32:18 there is mention of two layers of cotton and four layers of interfacing. I only used two layers of interfacing (one on the outside fabric and one on the inside fabric). I totally missed where the other two layers should go. Could you please clarify? Do you just sew two layers of the interfacing to EACH side of the mask? TIA.

..tho that is a lot of waste (around 17 min when you put pattern on fabric strips on outside edges of the rectangles)
many ppl don't have the luxury of wasting so much fabric..had you used same sized strips of fabric but folded dofferently you would have had enough from each strip for one more panel/pattern piece..
of course making the fabric strips a bit longer would allow 2 each..many options to waste less

One more thought. It's easy to tell one side from the other if the nose piece is zigzagged to the inside of one side of the mask before the two pieces are joined. One side has zigzag stitching along the center of the top, and the other side doesn't. You can also use a Sharpie, or other permanent marker, to make a designation.

I wanted cord locks for my masks with ribbon ties, but they were sold out. So I put 5/8” ribbon (1/2” wasn’t available) ties through a 1/4” metal nut (2 per mask) and tied a knot in the ribbon to keep them from slipping off. Then the nut just slides on the ribbon to tighten or loosen the mask. This has worked well for me.

Actually she states in the video (and the CDC is also emphasizing) that ANY mask should not be used repeatedly. My background is in Hazmat and If they take it off to eat then the mask should NOT be put back on at all. Otherwise contamination has already occurred between the exterior of the mask, the wearers skin contact, and any area that the mask comes in contact with.

Best tutorial video series I have found with the most beneficial information on masks shapes and materials to use and not use and why. Thank you so much. I have been making the pleated style with ties behind the head for adjustable head sizes and comfort. I understand more about the cup shape being a better fit and going to give that pattern a go. I am making masks for donations to local clinics for patients in the at risk category as I am one myself. Using mostly what I have at home in my sewing typical hoarded fabric piles. I want to make a few with stronger barriers for myself being a severe asthmatic and a friend with a child with respiratory issues. Have to stick with fabric ties as I don't have any elastic and stores are barely open here in Hawaii. I am trying to pull out all my shopping bags to find a few that might have that water proof fabric like yours. Thank you so much for all the valuable information. I was thinking autoclave cleaning would be a good choice where available. I have been using Demin and light weight upholstery fabric on at least one layer oping it adds a little more protection that thinner cotton. I have spandex and making strap ties out of that for some masks.

The only problem with this style design is it can fog up glasses even with a metal nose piece. I've found the nose shape needs to be curved down some if you wear glasses. Most of the medical facilities do not want any type of metal, pipe cleaners, etc in the donated masks as it can break down, poke through the mask, etc. For the rectangular pleated masks, I've been adding a small curved dart at the top middle to fit the nose a little better. These donations are not for first line responders and ICU personnel - they're more for the receptionists and medical personnel in clinic and screening type positions and to give to patients sitting in waiting rooms, etc. They're trying to save the "good" masks for those in very hi-risk positions. Studies have found the cotton masks do help stop contamination at about a 68% level (compared to a surgical mask at over 90%) so they are doing some good to protect both those wearing them as well as those around you.

I am making a pocket out of the Polypropylene bags. I cut a 3" x 1/2 to 5/8" strip and sew it on 3 sides leaving 1 small side open. I sew it on the front side of the mask before sewing the front and back together. I'm using 18 or 16 gauge copper wire turning the ends so there aren't any sharp edges. The wire stays in securely when wearing but can be removed for washing. You could also sew around all edges. The wire was suggested in one of the videos.

I have been making a lot of masks. This is the one I began with, but since it uses earloops that interfere with glasses and hearing aids, I kept trying other sites. I keep coming back to this one, and this time I made some adjustments that might be helpful to others with this same problem. I also don't like the aluminum metal option (too weak), so I used pipe cleaners, folded in half. I include a photo here. It shows the mask I make using velcro to hold it in place. Velcro makes it adjustable, whereas elastic is pretty much one size fits all (sorry if you have long hair). The blue paper extends the original pattern to make it long enough to go around the upper back of the neck. I drew a line at the 8 inch mark where you can cut the non-woven fabric layer; it doesn't need to go the full length.
Cut out the pattern and follow the Fabric Patch instructions. When you get to the part about installing the elastic, you will sew all the way around except for a short section. You have your mask inside out, so you need that opening to turn it right side out. Then just sew up the opening after you have pulled everything out. Lastly trim your velcro and sew it on the ends. Note the one piece of velcro will be on the "front" face, and the other will be "back face." Don't worry about the inner layer if you cut it at the 8" mark. Best mask I have made so far that doesn't use the ear loops.
Thank you Fabric Patch for your video and wise recommendations.

I made and tested this pattern and the pleated pattern. Both are serviceable. However after 20 minutes wear time, I found ties to be more comfortable than elastic. Ties also allow for a more customized fit.

Def protective, I can barely breath when I have it on. Anyhow, one problem I’m having is when I have the mask on the inner layer gets sucks in against my mouth. I’m using the brown oly and the instructions I received said to only use one layer. Any suggestions on how I can prevent the inner layer of fabric from being sucked up against my mouth?

Splendid detail - covers absolutely everything! My only comment is that for some people, the extra detail actually becomes too much.I watched it again just to remind myself, and had forgotten of the uses of freezer paper. I do have a tykek overall - the kind scene of crime officers wear. It makes quanties of interfacing which can be breathed through. I also have some fusing wing so I can attach my outer fabric to this so it makes one layer and is easier to handle sewing. Do have to check that the webbing still allows one to breath (would be sad if it won't !) I think what you are saying, and this will give comfort to others - get in your head how your design is put together, then go on and make your own. It doesn't have to be exactly the same, as long as it achieves the same objective, but you do give lots of tips. It looks so much more professional than the no-sew versions which you can also find on the net, and the material patterns are so lovely bright and cheerful - unlike the ones that are onside in the local corner shop. (You are a very clear speaker, and I am not sure you paused for a glass of water! Well done! ( I'm in the UK and it has just been announced that masks should be worn on transport , in larger stores and visiting hospitals,...... not sure why they didn't say this back in the beginning of lockdown, then decisions are being made on the hoof!)

I would also think the medical field would not want the starches and chemical on the fabric going up against their face in case of skin reaction.
Your video is the best I’ve seen on making them. I’m getting bored being inside and this will help me pass the time and my neighbor next door who happens to be a nurse.

For the bendable nose bridge, you could cut a pop can being very careful as it has sharp edges too. Cut the strip for the bridge of nose. Fold one outside edge to the centre and fold other outside edge to the centre and fold it all in half again so that there are no sharp edges. Don’t forget to fold the short ends in a bit too. No sharp edges.

@@conan1267 extra holes you don't need better avoided by using sewing clips or even clothes pegs. Minimizing holes in the non woven stabilizer. But if you like the extra holes go for it . I would prefer not to top sew if able. To reduce anything going through i used iron on non woven interfacing. Seams I used shorter stitch length and I fold the front seam to one side not iron open. Once you wash a few times the cotton threads re tightening but the stabilizer will keep holes.

I want to thank you for this video. I’m a newbie when it comes to sewing and your step by step instructions where great. I wanted to make just a few mask for my wife and I and some neighbors. I struggled with the materials to make this mask. Ended up using cotton flat sheet for the outer layers, and for stabilizer non-woven fabric I used clean reusable grocery bags cut up to fit the pattern because they are made out of polypropylene material (it was all I had in the house) Because these are for personal used I used 1/8 elastic cord with adjustable cords locks. Thanks again for this video.
