    It'd be cool if you cover Vision of Escaflowne someday. I feel like it's one that's becoming forgotten; it's mostly just old fans who still remember it. I don't see it talked about much, and it doesn't seem to have developed a cult following like other experimental late-90s shows, like Serial Experiments Lain or Revolutionary Girl Utena.

      The first time I finished Escaflowne I went on Tumblr made a very short post about how I didn’t get it. Which I expected to be of course ignored. I mean, it was honest I didn’t get it, but I was also really just shooting the shit as you did back in the day. Could be read as even kind of snooty.
      I was surprised a few hours later to get genuinely nice explanations trying to help me get it. But at that point I was more struck by the fact this no-one show from no-where no one had ever heard about (I’d only found it because I won a dvd at my local library raffle) still had a fandom. And that they were apparently genuine and nice.

    I just discovered this channel and I'm feeling pretty lucky about that. As I get older, I want to reach further back in time which happens to include the days of being a care-free teenager with a fresh new tape from Blockbuster or a shop in Chinatown.

    Watching the first minute of this video reminded me how expressive 90s anime used to be. With fewer frames budgeted for, they really made each frame count.
    I miss those days.

    When you spoke of the Fantasy Mech shows, you also have the two major chibi mech shows of the mid to late 80's and early 90's, Magical Hero Wataru and NG Knight Lamune & 40.
    Though the nail I think you hit on the head, is that the Lina/Naga mech fight really is an allegory on hardcore fans petty fights over everything from best girl to best Gunpla, to Star Wars or Star Trek. LoL.
    Good video as always.

    • @XCAltoona
      @XCAltoona 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wataru gets missed a lot in the West, but after it popped up in Super Robot Wars a few years ago I looked into it - it really was a big deal in its time and was pretty important in setting up the 90s wave of fantasy anime.

    Iirc, fantasy and scifi are actually a lot closer than you think. Something about how "scifi" as a genre was none existent for a long time, as it was subsumed inside the lavel of "fantasy".

    I recently watched Slayers, I can say I miss the 90s anime aesthetic. It was charmingly camp and extra. It also allowed for characters to have unique and memorable designs and avoid the same face issue.

      @jasonblalock4429 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Yeah, 90s anime was typically low budget but creative. Which is imo a lot better than big budget but bland. There's lots of good stuff to discover!

      Same face was present in 90's anime too (same goes for the 70 & 80's), but I do agree that the designs were definitely more memorable compared to the more subdued ones we get (outside of kiddie anime) nowadays

    I think the only Slayers that my spouse and I were a little disappointed with was the 2 new seasons that felt like they should have been one season. But even then it was cool to see new Slayers after that long.Maybe one day it'll get the Brotherhood treatment and we'll finally be able to see the other demon lords.

    Fantasy and sci-fi aren't even that different so it makes sense that we have lots of fantasy mech shows like Rayearth, Dunbine and Escaflowne, as well as comedic (but still awesome) ones like Lamune, Wataru and Granzort
    Although as much as I love me some _Slayers_ and as much as I love the idea of Lina in a mech, Great was never one of my favs, I mean, I certainly like it more than Try & Revolution, but I rarely ever go back to this one

    This Slayers movie was one of my favourites to watch when I was getting into anime back in late Elementary School/early High School. The premise alone of two bickering dunderheads settling their differences in a giant robot battle sounded like a grand time for kid me that really got into fantasy and mecha anime back then.
    While I know there are other high fantasy anime series that do as good job balancing the fantastical with the comedy elements ('Tower of Druaga' or 'Sands of Destruction' comes to mind), I'll always appreciate Slayers for being one of those series that served as a solid entry point for me getting into anime. Hopefully one day you'll do a retrospective video that covers 'Vision of Escaflowne' (the series or the feature film), 'Record of Lodoss War', 'Rune Soldier', or even Mahō Tsukai Tai! (Magic User's Club).

    Slayers Great is in my opinion the best of the movies. While it has the lowest stakes and the least dramatic plot, I feel that the overall script and pacing are much more solid than any of the other 3 films. The first movie has arguably the highest stakes and most drama, but it's severely dragged down by a very slow, long first act and a rushed third. Same goes for Slayers Gorgeous, which really drags things out at the start.
    Slayers Return is probably the next best for reasons you've stated, but I don't think it's as good as Great because the plot feels a little unfocused, at least to me. As goofy as Great is, I just feel like it's the most focused. There's a clear arc and sequence of events and not a lot of random BS introduced at any given moment.
    Anyway, looking forward to Gorgeous next year, and I hope you also cover the OVAs, Premium, Revoluton and Evolution-R some day.

    Fans.... didn't like this? You're telling me that a film series that leans on it's comedic absurdity went too far with this movie? XD I must respectfully disagree. It might not have a climactic fight against a genuine danger like the other 3 features, but it doesn't need it. The film is a fun subversion of the previous 2 entries by not only introducing villains with aims of conquest, who COULD be dangerous if given the chance, but it then dashes their plans by putting this father/son rivalry into the middle of it, and the payoff is remarkably funny.
    All 4 Slayers features may not be in the same league as "Monty Python's Holy Grail," but I submit it's what I would recommend if somebody wants another fantasy/comedy where it's specifically poking fun at all of the tropes and cliches known to the Arthurian or D&D derivative genres.
