Mita Nag is the sixth generation of sitarists in her family - a lineage including Manilal Nag (her father) and Gokul Nag (her grandfather). She hails from the Bishnupur gharana, a dhrupad-influenced tradition of Bengal, and is known for a virtuosic, vocal-infused approach. She has a Masters degree in English Literature, and in 2002 founded The Gokul Nag Memorial Foundation, a cultural organisation which seeks to preserve Kolkata’s musical heritage. Bhatiyar is a dawn raga, fabled to have been written two millennia ago by Raja Bhartruhari, the semi-mythical King of Ujjain (although historical evidence for this is scant). It uses the notes of Marwa thaat [SrGMPDNS], and is defined by its vakra [zigzag] phraseology, with no defined vadi or samvadi [king and queen notes]. Re and Ni are only played occasionally in aroha [ascent], and its melodies can have shades of Raag Mand. Sitarist-scholar Deepak Raja notes that “the raga’s centre of melodic gravity is in the mid-octave region, but tilting towards the upper tetrachord”. Some consider it to have an anxious, foreboding character, but the raga’s subtleties can produce many moods for different listeners.

Many thanks for posting this. Thankfully, this was recorded amazingly well. I was lucky enough to see Mita Nag and her father, the great Manilal Nag, in concert in Toronto, in the early 2000's. Still one of the best concerts I have ever seen. Mita is a truly great and mature sitarist, and as such is a wonderful representative of the Vishnupur gharana.

Missing the level of depth which completely mesmerized me in her earlier rendition of Suha Kanada...
loved her father's music #ManilalNag , her's is just as fine and i dont know if its true that female instrumentalists give a diff vibe from male, or if its that i am aware its a female, but somehow both her, and the daughter of Buddhadev Gupta's on sarod, give me a diff feel, as if the player has missing that special thing we call male ego (not that women by any means lack ego). something related to testosterone???
It's compassion. Comes naturally to women and the expression too. Men can take lifetimes to develop and a few years to further learn to express if they have it :)

We're now adding raga information to the video descriptions for our whole channel - click 'show more' above for a brief rundown of Raag Bhatiyar. However it's important we remember that raga theory comes after their creation - they're aesthetic concepts as much as technical/theoretical ones, and will vary from musician to musician and place to place. Bhatiyar is often considered to be a particularly complex raga, due to its swara material (set of available notes) and vakra (zig-zag) melodic patterns. We recommend sitarist-scholar Deepak Raja's short essay for further reading (swaratala.blogspot.com/2011/07/raga-bhatiyar.html), as well as Rajan Parrikar's blog post (www.parrikar.org/hindustani/bhatiyar/).
