In the UK, Dark horse published the Aliens magazine, magazine sized reprints of the US stories, usually a chapter or half chapter at a time, 3 to 4 storylines running concurrently with extra articles and prose stories to fill out the issue. They also did Terminator and another called Total Carnage that covered alot of the smaller franchises.
Kilian Plunkett from Aliens:Labyrinth (written by Jim Woodring😮) would have been nice to see! He didn’t do many comics but what we have is pretty great!
if anyone wants to see a lot of different takes on Aliens, i recommend Aliens: Havoc . its a 2 issue series with a new artist on (i think) every other page.
Now you gotta get Stokoe for a shoot!. He's got so much great indie and even Marvel/DC stuff. Big Darrow acolyte as well, so I am sure he can hook you up. If the kayfabers don't already know his work I think they'd love it
Ronnie del Carmen did two Aliens one shots that look like no other Aliens comics out there… he worked on Batman: The Animated Series as a storyboard artist and they have a bit of that flavor. Gabriel Hardman did a mini-series toward the end of Dark Horse’s run with the property that’s suitably grimy and fun.
I've been reading a bunch of the old Aliens comics recently, spurred on by the computer game that came out recently (which is pretty good!), and Phil Norwood's work on the first three issues of the first Aliens vs Predator mini are really good. He goes off-model at points for the look of the characters but the flow of action from panel to panel is fantastic.
I was really hoping you guys would talk about "Aliens: Apocalypse - The Destroying Angels" Writer: Mark Schultz, Artist:Doug Wheatley. Superman vs. Aliens was also a great little story with amazing art. I love it's take on on Argo City and Supergirl.
Aliens Earth Angel was originally serialized in th Previews catalog back in 92 or 93. Dark Horse then collected the whole thing into a single comic. There were actually a few things DH did like that in the Previews catalog. AvP also had a serialized strip titled Booty.
I'm still not used to Dark Horse no longer being the top publisher of licensed comics. Just decades of great comics out of print because one company wants to monopolize all entertainment. I guess the Mignolaverse and publishing some of the bigger manga titles is what's keeping the lights on right now. I doubt Viz and Kodansha will continue using a third party to publish their comics in the west, tho.
You guys should check out the 2 issue mini Aliens: Havoc. It's got everyone who was doing work at Dark Horse at the time (sans Mignola, Miller, and Byrne): Fegredo, Totleben, Art Adams, Allred, Darrow, Peter Bagge, Kelley Jones, Guy Davis, Kevin Nowlan, Frank Teran, Travis Charest, P. Craig Russell, Jon J. Muth, Sergio Aragones, John Paul Leon, fucking Mœbius (!), and more. Each does one page. Could do a "Guess Who?" game with it.
Kelley Jones and the Hive issues have stuck with me since I was a kid. The early Dark Horse comics really nailed the atmosphere of the first two (and third!) films
I think H.R.G really nailed it. Perfect design and all the outer worldly feel of the creature. The creation of the Queen has been best innovation since imo
Before watching the video I'll say Mike Mignola with Aliens Salvation. Every character he interprets is my favorite version of that character. Plus, his heavy spotting blacks is perfect for the Aliens aesthetic.
Aliens Salvation was my jam. Read that to pieces, replaced it and read it to pieces again... but Richard Corben, got something to track down now. I mean how did I miss that?
I haven't looked at those Sam Keith Aliens in so long, but wow he really is bringing in Frazetta and Williamson old EC science fiction elements. Beautiful work.
You mention at the begining about mentioning comics to look at, I think it’d be cool if you had a look at some European comics, like thorgal, or keepers of the maser, and some more 2000ad stuff ^^
23:16 You should consider checking out the Godzilla run that James Stokoe did (Godzilla: Half Century War)... Actually, a best of Godzilla and Transformers comics would be nice. That then could lead to more deep dives on specific issues or runs.
This is my jam.. one of the things that got me into comics. I did the monthly subscrition to my local WHSmiths and was gutted when suddenly they stopped, my town didnt have a Comicbook shop back then.
The Verhaiden/Beauvais Aliens series is what got me back into reading comics. I think I kind of reread these issues obsessively, I didn't know comics could be like that. The airbrushed art was stunning. Dark Horse had so many good artists working with them during this era, from Mark Nelson and Den Beauvais Aliens stuff to Chris Warner on Predator, Frank Miller drawing Sin City or Mignola doing episodes of Hellboy for DHP....just an incredible time to be reading comics.
Some of my favorite Aliens artists include: John Bolton's covers for Earth War; Dave Dorman in Aliens Tribes, also the cover art for AvP #4; Paul Johnson in Aliens Sacrifice; Killian Plunkett in Aliens Labyrinth...
There was a Predator one-shot illustrated by Jim Somerville, Invaders from the Fourth Dimension, similar to Aliens Earth Angel in that it's set in the 1950s. A little boy can see the cloaked Predator thru 3D glasses. Iirc Earth Angel was not previously published in either of Dark Horse's anthology series.
Well, thanks for murdering my bank account once again. I had seen the Sam Kieth issues (which messed me up as a kid) but I didn't know about the Kelley Jones and Byrne stuff. Since you like Guy Davis, I'd love to see you guys look at Sandman Mystery Theatre at some point.
Hey, I have a bunch of comics I'd like you guys to flip tru around here, but I won't make a list or nothing like that. Instead, I'll say I'd like you to get your hands in some Squa Tront
Another amazing video, guys! If you're taking suggestions, I'd love to see you cover Tim Sale's work at some point. Batman The Long Halloween is probably the book people are most familiar with but I'd also recommend Superman for All Seasons, Catwoman When in Rome, and his Marvel work. I feel like he was a truly unique cartoonist working in the mainstream and I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
A couple of weeks ago I came across a set of Alien/Hives by Kelley Jones and it was autographed too! Always support your local comics shops because you never know? 🤞

I'm just starting to watch this video now, sad to hear Killian ain't in here. Killian and James Stokoe are 2 of my fave alien artists. And Miglola
Plunkett is the one I was hoping to see, too.
That is my top choice!
Plunkett a
bsolutely gets my vote. Woodring also with a gruesome, disturbing story.
Best Aliens book ever, shame guys didn't hear about it, the one to discover.
the John Byrne story was originally serialized in Previews
aliens sacrifice (Paul Johnson art) also worth a mention.
I got the Heavy Metal Alien comic by Walt Simonson earlier this year and it's awesome.
Glad you guys mentioned Mahnke. The original Mask comics are amazing and would make a good video.
if anyone wants to see a lot of different takes on Aliens, i recommend Aliens: Havoc . its a 2 issue series with a new artist on (i think) every other page.
Oh man, the childhood nostalgia I got from watching you open Salvation was intense.
For my money, no artist is better at drawing Aliens comics than Tristan Jones.
Denis Beauvais art is just perfect... I've been on a lot horror sets over the years and I've seen those pages used as inspiration more than once
Now you gotta get Stokoe for a shoot!. He's got so much great indie and even Marvel/DC stuff. Big Darrow acolyte as well, so I am sure he can hook you up. If the kayfabers don't already know his work I think they'd love it
That series has my favorite art. I bought them when they first came out and have held onto them.

HERK MONDO. YES.

There's an Alien vs Predator #0 featuring a Mike Mignola cover and Norwood's art in b&w. Iirc it was reprinted in color when published in trade.
I think they have a video on Superman vs Aliens already.
Dorman and Sudyam painted covers and Mignola Salvation are probably my favorites!
Alien and predator comics were my gateway into comics.

Stronghold was one I overlooked. Thanks for the tip. Just grabbed 1-4 off eBay.

great video! love seeing james stokoe make a kayfabe appearance I was happy to complete that series this year!
David Lloyd did some amazing Alien art.
Kelley Jones and the Hive issues have stuck with me since I was a kid. The early Dark Horse comics really nailed the atmosphere of the first two (and third!) films
I love the art of James Stokoe's Dark Orbit, visualizing outstanding work.
I think H.R.G really nailed it. Perfect design and all the outer worldly feel of the creature. The creation of the Queen has been best innovation since imo
Aliens Stronghold #3 is the best cover of all - featuring a cigar chomping xenomorph
Before watching the video I'll say Mike Mignola with Aliens Salvation. Every character he interprets is my favorite version of that character. Plus, his heavy spotting blacks is perfect for the Aliens aesthetic.

Had a bunch of the early Aliens comics and just ordered the Aliens Early Years Hardcover reprinting those books!
Great video! You missed out on Eduardo Risso, and Walt Simonson.
You mention at the begining about mentioning comics to look at, I think it’d be cool if you had a look at some European comics, like thorgal, or keepers of the maser, and some more 2000ad stuff ^^
All great artists. I really enjoy Eduardo Risso, he did Wraith and Resurrection.
Got to draw a couple of the mini-comics that came with the Alien toy series -- Hicks and Alien v Predator. Bizarre gig, but I loved doing them 👍
23:16 You should consider checking out the Godzilla run that James Stokoe did (Godzilla: Half Century War)... Actually, a best of Godzilla and Transformers comics would be nice. That then could lead to more deep dives on specific issues or runs.

WHSmiths - how to tell a UK Kayfaber in one word!
You Guys need to do a video on Ralph Snart comics!!
RIP Ed Piskor
Oh crap! You guys need to find Aliens - Labyrinth by Jim Woodring and Killian Plunkett! The art is beyond amazing and the story is crazy messed up!
The Verhaiden/Beauvais Aliens series is what got me back into reading comics. I think I kind of reread these issues obsessively, I didn't know comics could be like that. This is outrageous! I can t believe you guys forgot to include Francisco Solano Lopez and his interior art work on Aliens Kidnapped . Epic fail!!
Some of my favorite Aliens artists include: John Bolton's covers for Earth War; Dave Dorman in Aliens Tribes, also the cover art for AvP #4; Paul Johnson in Aliens Sacrifice; Killian Plunkett in Aliens Labyrinth...
I like the art in the Dark Horse alien books. It's way better than the shit marvel is doing now.
did you see the photoshop controversy last year? its bad news
@@krsj5124 I know It sucks man.

I think you guys would have fun covering the Doug Mahnke and Garth Ennis Hitman Lobo one shot. Mahnke inks himself
Bisley did a great alien
Well, thanks for murdering my bank account once again. I had seen the Sam Kieth issues (which messed me up as a kid) but I didn't know about the Kelley Jones and Byrne stuff. Since you like Guy Davis, I'd love to see you guys look at Sandman Mystery Theatre at some point.

thats most anticipated works i've been waiting for them to review.
Kieth and Jones art all day!
Hopefully most or all of this should see reprints in affordable Epic collections in the next few years.
A couple of weeks ago I came across a set of Alien/Hives by Kelley Jones and it was autographed too! Always support your local comics shops because you never know? 🤞
Hey Dwayne!
I'm a Mark A. Nelson mark for sure. Not to be confused with Mark Nelson the painter.
The John Bolton covers were very controversial. Everyone was mad that the interior art was so different.
