    Nissan has issues a TSB for these codes, please review this tbs and follow reset procedures as explained in this video
    nissan tbs #NTB04-126
    www.autocodes....
    In this video actually steps and procedures necessary to correctly diagnose P1273 and P1283. These diagnostic trouble codes can be rather frustrating to diagnose and properly correct. Most of the time that I see these coaches either due to an exhaust leak or field 02 sensor however a bad fuel pump at mass airflow sensor and vacuum leak have also been known to cause these codes to appear. These are the steps in theaters I use on a daily basis to diagnose issues pertaining to these codes. If you have an aftermarket exhaust meaningful can I converters exhaust system etc. Double and triple check for exhaust leaks as Nissan vehicles are ultra sensitive To pick it up exhaust leak causing a lean condition. I hope this video is help you out if you have any questions please free to leave something in the common section. This video has helped you, please like and subscribe. Thank you for watching

    Because of you I still have hair, thanks for making this video. I had replaced the motor in my 350Z back in November & it ran fine. Around the beginning of January the dreaded P1273/P1283 popped up & inspection was due Feb 1st. Made a smoke machine & tested the intake, had a small leak with a vacuum hose, fixed it. No exhaust leaks, all 4 O2 sensors were new so I cleared the codes......
    A few miles down the road CEL...... rechecked everything, cleared the codes....
    After 2 weeks of jacking with it nothing seemed to work until I seen your video. It was unplugging the Mass Airflow Sensor that finally did the trick, not only did it pass with flying colors it runs like a new car

    Hey guys,
    I had a P0420 code for several years and the P1273 for a month or so.
    At the time, and with my lack of knowledge, I didn’t care about the P0420 code …I thought it was only emissions. The code IS for emissions, but it can ALSO mean other problems exist too! I’ll explain later.
    So I drove it like that for maybe 35k miles, maybe 40k.
    A surprise pregnancy (no. 5) sent us over the baby seat limit for our larger ride. Lol
    Alas, we had to buy a new car …and sell my faithful Altima (now at 201,000). This made the P0420 code more of a deal breaker. I wouldn’t get as much with the engine light on.
    And so began my journey to a CEL-free dash!
    I started with Bluedriver. So glad I did!! I was able to see my fuel trims!!!! Life changing tool!!!
    I was at 9% on my long term and 17% on my short term!! This meant I had a few leaks!
    I was opened up to the world of not trusting CEL lights! Curse you Bluedriver!! Lol
    I started with a starting-fluid-spray-test and found the first leak. Turns out when I had replaced my PCV valve, I had dropped a small ring gasket that sat in the PCV-hose-to-intake port. Fixed that and watched the STFT drop to 14%. Still not good enough. Read that a lot of Altimas have cracks in their exhaust header. Checked that and found TONS! TONS! There’s my problem!
    Fortunately, the cracks and the P0420 code are the same part. My destiny was calling me! I had to replace the catalytic manifold to WIN! Lol
    .
    So I first tried a $100 aftermarket catalytic converter/exhaust manifold on Amazon. Didn’t even come close to fitting! Should have known.
    Returned that and bought a $350 “OEM” one from O’Reilly’s. That didn’t fit too well either. Ugh!
    Engine side heat shield didn’t fit, so I left that out. Had to modify a few heat shield holes for the radiator side.
    Had to use spacers and different bolts to match the manifold mounting bracket up near the bottom. Finally got it in. What a pain!
    Also found out that my exhaust pipe bracket had been squashed from coming down off a curb from our yard or something. So I replaced that and it helped the pipe meet up with the new manifold even more. Still wasn’t OEM though as O’Reilly said it was. Pshshh.
    Anyways, so I started the car up.
    P0420 gone! Boom. Within the first drive cycle! LTFT went down to 0%! So awesome! STFT went to 9%. Nice!
    .
    Here’s where the crap hit the fan!
    The dreaded P1273 started popping up to say hi. Ugh!
    Went through a few fuel trim clearing procedures (including unplugging the battery overnight) and it just kept popping back up.
    Tons of sites were saying it was a lean issue. Injectors, bad sensors, yada yada.
    Tried replacing my sensors a few times. Both upstream and downstream! Nope. It came back.
    .
    Found on TH-cam that ONE mechanic was saying this code also popped up from an EXHAUST LEAK after the flex hose joint. I had remembered that after I installed the new converter manifold that the flex joint just didn’t feel as nice of a fit when I had put it back together. It was tight, but just didn’t feel right.
    So I looked at that while the car was running and sure enough, noticed that I could hear the engine when I put my ear up to the flex joint. There was a smaaaall gap where O2 could get in and throw the readings at the 2nd sensor! Not enough to notice a huge difference on my Bluedriver (2nd sensor was showing 0.265 volts), but enough to supposedly throw my P1273 code.
    So I installed a few rings around the male pipe connector on the manifold to help lift the curved side of the flex pipe gasket out a little further to fill up that gap I was talking about. After a few rings that I had cut out of a tin sheet I was able to make it mesh good to work with the new manifold and old flex joint and pipe. Bolted it back up. Started the car. No more noise.
    The car sounded better than it had in a long time! No cracks in the exhaust, no flex pipe leak!
    Performed the fuel trim history clearing procedure.
    Man oh man I can’t tell you how pleased I am!!!! LTFT is 0%! STFT moves around from 0 to 6%!
    Been driving the car now for a long time and no codes!!! No P0420, no P1273!
    Engine purrs!
    Here’s my final readings:
    (range includes cold start to warm engine, at idle and 3000 RPM)
    STFT 0 to 6%
    LTFT 0%
    O2B1 0.12 to 0.9V
    O2B2 0.28 to 0.31V
    So what did I learn? Here’s the main things that will change my mechanic life forever:
    1. Catalytic converters should last for 200,000+ miles with a well maintained engine. If you’re cat goes bad, you probably have other problems that just haven’t thrown a code yet.
    2. You can have small problems with no CELs that can turn into big ones!
    3. Fuel trims can really help diagnose issues!
    4. The 2nd O2 sensor is not JUST used for exhaust emissions! The ECM uses BOTH O2 sensors to determine fuel trims (and lean or rich fuel conditions).
    So what did this mean for me? That I will fix catalytic converter problems much sooner from now on if I plan to keep my car around past 200,000 miles.
    If your engine is running rich for a long time it can damage other parts, and eventually expensive ones. I’ll admit, emissions aren’t my biggest concern. But I do care about engine longevity.
    All that said, if you have a P0420, P1273, or P1274, hopefully my story will help save you some hassle.
    Take care,
    Benny

      Really nice comment. Just sucks when you get under there and see that all that shit is rusted out and now you need another cat on the other side. Two more straight pipes on each side, all new hardware and gaskets for these pieces, and apparently so high temp rust prevention spray or something to combat the oxidation.

      Hmmmm I have a P0420 and P1273 . My Altima is at 130k miles .. I don’t even know where to start .. I already remove the catalytic converters and clean it with thinner .. I’m not sure if my catalytic converters is the problem cause my car rpm are steady while in idle .. idk what to do anymore .. finding about this P1273 just made it more frustrating

    Thank you so much. I was stuck with p1283 on my 05 pathfinder after my ignition coil took a shit. After replacing ignition coil and spark plug, and cleaning the code, check engine light came on after 10 minutes of driving. I didn’t think I had to replace AF sensor so when I stumbled upon this video and tried disconnecting maf and erasing the code, check engine went away. I drove the car for about 20 minutes and it’s now fine. Thank you so much!

    I have a 2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8S. Got a P1273 code, so to fix it, I replaced the front O2 sensor, cleaned MAF sensor and fixed a small exhaust leak around the pipe hanger near the catalytic converter. Cleared the codes and in less than 5 miles got the P1273 again. Tried hi test gas, fuel injector cleaner, to no avail. In addition, there were 2 sensors not ready even after many miles driven - Catalyst and Evap System. I took it to a mechanic, he suggested we do a smoke test, etc. Was not too enthusiastic about the troubleshooting, expecting lot of time involved. After much searching and no specific fix suggested other than what I already did I came across your video. I did the procedure you outlined, drove the car for approx 14 miles, no check engine, and ALL sensors complete. THANKS!!!!! Finally got my inspection today. BTW - you are right -- once it throws a CE light and a P1273 code, the remaining sensors DO NOT COMPLETE. Thank you again!

    I had to take my 2004 nissan titan truck into muffler shop cause snapped 2 stud bolts trying to change exhaust gasket. So I had to run truck to shop with exhaust disconnect right at both cats. It was a very loud ride to the shop. Got P1273 & P1283 after putting everything back together. But didn't have these codes before . My guess is cause exhaust was no connection to cats . Is your clear the learn step (disconnect MAF sensor, pull code to confirm, clear code, plug in sensor and start and run for 5 minutes) the same as this?:
    1. Turned the ignition 'ON' and wait 3 seconds.
    2. Depress and release the gas pedal 5 times within 5 seconds.
    3. Wait for about 7 seconds then depress the gas pedal for 10 seconds. At this point the check engine light will start to blink.
    4. Release the gas pedal.
    5. Depress and hold the gas pedal for 10 seconds.
    6. Turn the key 'OFF'.
    7. The code should be erased.
    8. Key on-2 seconds.
    9. Key off-10 seconds.
    10. Key on-2 seconds.
    11. Key off-10 seconds.

    My wife's 2004 Altima is throwing a P1273 and down the rabbit hole of the internet, I found a video showing a flex pipe leak as a possible cause of a P0420. She's gone at the moment, but is there an oxygen sensor downstream of the flex pipe ? the rear metal gasket on her flex pipe has broken loose, but I didn't realize there is any sensor that far down stream & didn't realize it would leak at that connection and throw codes? Couldn't find where a P1273 would be triggered by a flex pipe leak, only videos of 2 O2 sensors on the side of the engine & manifold on the front to possibly replace.

    • @AaronHinesAuto
      @AaronHinesAuto  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      these codes can make a grown man cry. i have seen a number of issues cause these codes on nissans,but the majority of the time,an exhaust leak is the cause. the flex pipe on the altimas is a very common issue. i have personally seen this issue come about at the last shop i worked at. if my memory serves me connect, there is an 02 sensor behind that flex pipe. any leak will be detected by the rear 02 sensor and the ecu will think the engine is running lean due to the added oxygen in the exhaust.The ecu will interpret the leak as a lean connection due to the voltage between both 02 sensors being different. if you cant find a leak yourself, i would suggest paying a reputable shop to reform a smoke test on the exhaust to pinpoint a leak, good luck!!

    Hey brother, I just replaced the air fuel ratio upstream sensor. Because I hat the p1273 once I fixed the che engine light went away and came back the day after while I was driving. And I connect the scanner and it shows me the same code again. Any idea what’s going on?

    My man still watch your videos, I'm gonna be a dick lol, still wating for more videos on the xterra. An update on my car (nissan frontier) ordered jba headers (shorty) and jba cat back. KN intake. I still don't have the courage to buy the turbo, looking for a supercharger with no luck.

      @AaronHinesAuto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ya i know man, i need to upload more videos of the xterra, however its not longer turbocharged, i ran out of fuel at 430 whp and inorder to make more i had to put a new fuel system and larger injectors on it. i was constantly chasing down boost leaks and trying to solve issues, kind of got burnt out on it, with my job and newly married i had no time for it. so i built a high compression motor (11.0:1) put come brian crower stage 2 cams on it and went with a N/A build. its no where as fun as it was with the turbo, but its still alot of fun, put down 289hp- 300tq to the tires. and now revs to 7k and still making power, very soon ill upload an update video.
      ya since stillen discontinued the supercharger, they are hard to come by, i found a company in south africa that makes a procharger kit but they wont ship to the US. Do you have a tune?

      @@AaronHinesAuto yeah I know you don't have the turbo any more, but im still intrigued by your car. My car stock with an cold air intake has beaten down a lot of tuned bmws. It was so much fun. My cousin tunes bmws he offered to help but I'm not sure I want him messing around with my ecu. And what's the companies name in South Africa, I know most companies from there ship to my country. Had a hilux 3.0 dissel and they sent a tuned ecu I bought. Your input is greatly appreciated since you have the knowledge, it not just speculation. Anyways I enjoy your videos man, Keep the videos coming .

      @@AaronHinesAuto Thanks, i Google after you posted. Now that you posted I'll email them and see what they say. Man the people at club frontier are kind of pricks, now I remember why I only lurk there. Aaron one more question, so you also did the turbo headers? Part of the problem is I know some people make custom parts here but I don't know if trust them enough to not blow up my engine.

    • @AaronHinesAuto
      @AaronHinesAuto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ya i dont go on many forums these days, i used to alot but now it just seems like a dick measuring contest, no i ran doug thorley long tube headers to a sort y pipe. the turbo was next to the bellhousing on the drivers side. i put a brass t where the oil pressure sensor is and ran a steal oil line to the turbo, then i ran the oil return back into the oilpan above the oil level in the motor, so oil couldnt backflow into the turbo with the engine off. i also had to install an electric oil pump to pump oil back to the motor because the turbo was below the motor.

    Thanks for making the video. I have a 2005 Xterra with a P1273 code. My scanner indicates a lean condition in both banks (bank1 > bank2). I replaced the bank1 S1 A/F sensor and reset but it made no difference. After watching this video I checked for intake vacuum leaks and exhaust leaks. I don't have a smoke machine but based on a visual inspection and using starting fluid I could not find any leaks. The truck runs fine and has lots of power but it is using a bit more fuel than normal (1-2 L/100km) and the idle is a little uneven (but not bad). Any thoughts on possible causes for the code and lean condition?

    • @sparkie9947
      @sparkie9947 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, and the Bank 1 S2 has a normal voltage reading.

    • @AaronHinesAuto
      @AaronHinesAuto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you perform the research shown at the end of the video? Also are you able to monitor short term and long term fuel trims with the scanner? Try spraying the exhaust gaskets in the catalytic converter area with some soapy water while the engine and exhaust is cold. Bubbles will form around and leaks, But you have to be quick because the exhaust will evaporate the water when it gets hot

    • @sparkie9947
      @sparkie9947 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I did the MAF relearn procedure. I can monitor trims. At idle SHRT FT1 is 11.7-12.5% and LONG FT1 is 0%. I'll try looking for an exhaust leak again with soap and water. Thank you.

    • @AaronHinesAuto

      here are some diagnostic steps for this code i pulled from identifix.
      1. Inspect for exhaust leaks.
      2. Check for any missing bolts in the heat shield for the bank 2 catalyst per TSB #NTB04-019A. The bolts go all the way into the catalytic converter so a missing bolt would cause an exhaust leak.
      3. Inspect for vacuum leaks.
      4. Monitor fuel trims and add alternative fuel, then create a vacuum leak to see if the air fuel ratio sensor will respond.
      if those show nothing then i would swap bank 1 02 sensors with bank 2. perform the reset procedure and see if the code jumps to bank 2.

      a lo que se refiere es que cambio los dos sensores al cual se refieren los codigos pero cuando los borro la forma de hacerlo es desconectando el maf sensor y luego arrancar y cuando salgan los codigos del maf sensor entonces apagar el vehiculo y borrar los codigos para que no vuelvan a regresar
