I am a beginner when it comes to sewing...this was easy to follow and create. Thank you for taking your time and explaining the "why" you cut things the way their cut. Knowing the "why" helps me tremendously as I can't always see it in my head.
I am glad you ACTUALLY discussed purchasing the fabric based on height and body size. I just saw a video where all the viewers praised the girl making the cloak, but without proper sizing many will end up with a cloak that is to short, too long or too baggy for their shoulder width.
So easy to make, the instructions were crystal clear! I've made 4 of these for my friends and I (we're Lord of the Rings + Hobbit fans) and they were so happy :) Thank you for this awesome video!
Wow, that is awesome and you're a wonderful friend. Cheers to another Lotr fan! Farewell, wherever you fare till your eyries receive you at the journey's end! ;)
Thank you so much for this, my boyfriend and i are making cloaks this winter and this is definitely the simplest and easiest to follow tutorial and i feel much more confident and excited to make them :-)
This was a great tutorial! It was very easy to follow for the "sorta beginner" sewer. I made my son an Obi Wan Kenobi cloak for Halloween...he LOVED it. Thank you so much!!
Fabulous. At first it sounds intimidating and you think, "I couldnt never do this," but after a moment, you go, "oh i get it! I could definitely do this!" Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I just finished making a green rangers apprentice cloak and a charcoal Gryffindor cloak for the book week parade. You’ve made two young readers very happy!
I've followed this tutorial twice now. The first time was a year ago in February 2023; I made a black one out of a double-sided waterproof & fleece material, with a pointed hood and hook+eye fasteners. Today, I've followed it again - this time I've made a light grey one out of fairly thin wool, with a rounded hood and snap fasteners. I've yet to see how it performs outside or how long it'll hold out before needing repairs. I like your video, it's very good and really easy to follow compared to your competition. I found it amusing that other people have criticised you for sewing, when you've very clearly talked about the alternative 😂 I'm sort of experimenting with cloak materials - will I make one out of fleece, linen or anything else next? We'll see. Anyway, thanks for making this video - it's given me something to do! 😊
Thank you so much for this easy tutorial! My daughter wanted a cloak for her and a friend for a game they play. We didn’t have time to go get fleece fabric so we ended up using two fleece blankets and just made it mid calf length. Worked great! And was cheaper than buying by the yard. Plus it gave me an opportunity to teach my daughter how to use the sewing machine. Win win!
This will be so fun and easy for me and my boyfriend to do together. Im doing most of the costume construction for the ren fair but I think he will love his cloak even more if he gets to help make it!
Thankyou :) I think outside the box and live in a small area with a few homeless. I could see this as a fleece with a lining for a somewhat warm fall wrap up at night time and warmth when the wind is chillly.
Thank you! I used this tutorial to make a cloak for my daughter for a Hufflepuff costume. It was so fast and turned out so well that my son wanted one for his costume. When it was done my other son was so excited that he wanted me to make one for him as well. I had enough leftover fabric to make ones for my other two sons... and I might have picked up enough fleece to make cloaks for my husband and I as well :P My second son has been wearing his everywhere and wondering why cloaks ever went out of style 😂
Oh man, haha. That is fantastic. I'm glad your family is all loving their cloaks. I completely agree with your son too. Cloaks are so much fun to wear.
Thank you very much. As my first sewing project I am making a cloak. This really helped as it was simple and easy for me to adjust to my needs and didn’t require me to know everything already! Thank you very much or this video. I hope your son liked his cloak :)
Thank you for leaving this feedback. I'm so glad to hear it was simple and easy to follow. My son was a happy little Hobbit for Halloween :) I hope you enjoy your cloak too.
Thank you so much! I followed this tutorial and made a cloak that I'm very excited about! It was my very first sewing project in my adult life! (One of my friend's parents was very kind to help me.) We used a fabric that frayed and was able to just sew a hem around the edges and then used pinking scissors for the seams along the top and back of the hood on the inside instead of using the bias tape. I will say the measure of collarbone to anklebone made the cloak slightly shorter than I would have liked; it went above my ankles once it was all complete - my bad for not testing before cutting. It also lays slightly longer in the front than it does in the back while wearing.
You can also hand-stitch the seams. I would use a forward one full stitch, back half stitch (stick needle midpoint in previous stitch) along the seam. If you’re using outerwear fleece, do not iron your seams. Just finger press. It also washes and dries beautifully.
To determine which side of outerwear fleece is the outside or right side, pull it along the cut edge before you start, till it starts curling in on itself. Then think of the way your hand curls when you curl your fingers toward your palm. If it curls in on itself, like the inside of your palm, that’s the wrong side.
I Never sewed anything in my life before and wanted a cloak for Halloween, it was so easy! Very good tutorial thank you so much. I’ll definitely sew more now it was so much fun!
This video is amazing! Loved the cloak fastener too! Added them to my two previous cloaks and they work great. The new cloak with the cloak fastener works really well. Thank you for this tutorial!
Thank you so much for this super simple cloak tutorial video! I made one last night and it came out perfectly! I'll use this video for all my future cloaks!

@@GuidingBoltGaming this is pretty late, but I made the cape and I absolutely love it. It looks awesome and it was so beginner friendly. What about a full circle cloak. This is really great but, what if your out and about and a chilly wind comes on your front side....or it's snowing...can you show how to make a full cover cloak ?❤
The chair/ladder holding down the fabric was a smart idea. I gotta ask, is your channel name a double play on both sewing and Dungeons & Dragons? I at first thought of the spell name Guilding Bolt but then thought no, that's silly. We buy fabric by the bolt. If I guessed correctly though, very clever!
Hmmm...I would think the process would be similar, just measurements that are much shorter. You could always test with some cheap fabric or an old sheet you don't mind cutting up first.
In a great majority of my videos, I wear a cloak. I was thinking about spending some of my time making an outfit that matches. I dont know how to sew, so this helps.
Yeah. Red cloak for sure, a black mask that can cover my face but I can still see through, havent thought clearly about my clothes underneath my cloak, and I already got something for my shoes, head, and waste
Thank you so much for the tutorial. It was easy to follow and i watched every single tutorial to make the hood part but none of them turned out right, except for yours. I'm making it for a stuffed animal cat so the measurements dont line up. It would be useful if you could let me know about those measurements. Please reply soon
Hello - I'm glad you found our video helpful! I'm not sure I can assist with the measurements, but it should be roughly the same process, just scaled way down. I'm confident you'll be able to get it :)
thanks for the tutorial. i made one with satin. i followed your size, but turns out it’s too short for me. well i wanted it to be dragged on the floor, but it’s way up as same level as my calves. the problem i having is that i don’t have sewing machine and it took me almost 3 hours to get it done by hands.
That was such a great video I assumed that you were a DIY costume channel!! This cloak would be great for my Ren Faire costume. Any other Ren Faire DIY ideas? A easy wrap skirt? Floral ribbon crown? Corset???
Thanks so much! My step son plans to use his cloak for Ren Fest too! Honestly I dabble in costumes a little bit, but I'm more of a crafter (aka making armor) than I am a sewer. Thus this tutorial with only basic or no sew skills. ;)
What's your angle? Are you trying to be funny or sarcastic. I mean obviously I want to know how to make a cloak because cloaks are awesome. I wish we all wore cloaks daily. Honestly I've never wore one outside of a one night stand cuz it was part of my Halloween costumes but I think they're tatally badass. They must give the lucky individual that is wearing it all kinds of security and comfort. Bet they are it's way better at making you feel that comfort level one gets in a nice zip up hoodie and a hoodie feels great. I always get exciter when I know it's almost hoodie time again even though I love summer. A hoodie feels good and wholesome like if you could make a a cup of hot cocoa with a dash of nutmeg in January after shoveling snow into a garment. A cloak though whoa it's gotta be even better, like a warm cup of cider with a sprinkle of cinnamon while your enjoying an apple doughnut you just witnessed the step by step process to getting made till it ends up worn and toasty in your hand at an orchard during a crisp autumn night as you ride a hayride through the HAUNTED TRAIL in all hallows eve and as you snugglepuppieuo to your companion who's skin is cold and soft as a rose petal as you sneak a kiss their cold nose burries into the nape of your warm neck sending chills all over your body. !!! Sorry.... that's what it'd be like to have a well fitted favorite cloak on I'd imagime. I don't even want to get into if you had Ike two layers with the one underneath being a zip- up, prolly have to take a cold shower after that, ha I mean am I right or am I right. Ha ha Ohhh ...well yup....that just hapoened...guess I'll get going it's been like 15 minutes and I'm just jabberin on all based on the fact that an attractive gal is commenting on cloaks and talking bout RF's it was like my mind smashed into a brick wall. That's why I asked if you were joking or trying to be sarcastic cuz it's just something that you don't see everyday. Hell ever not ever have I witnessed so many odd boxes being checked at the same time technically just 3 but still the trio is so random and I was just saying that I see you. Wish I knew where girls like you hung out in my area. Thank God there was no talk of Amish clothing cuz I would have lost my mind then lol jk but not really it's a beautiful strange world out there when people are just doing what they want without the worries of fitting in or trying to conform with society. I mean if you were in a crowded place made a loud and stern announcement the sound a 180 in a cloak while simultaneously throwing your hood on as you briskly exit the soace. Boom! That would be the best thing that happened in clothing since we finally let women wear pants. Poor Joan of Arc such a shame when religion gets all murdery with their sytem and rules. Why sometimes it's like what if we all just accepted things based on concrete facts up to this point and we had no bizarre crazy belief systems to drive us apart. I know one thing for sure as I wrap this up in a world like that we all wear cloaks and that's that. Have a wonderful life.
Wow quick and easy with no sewing. ❤️ Unlike the velvet fully lined cloak I made for DIL for their renaissance fair wedding. Hot August in Austin so never worn 🙄
Oh goodness, fleece will cook you in the southern sun. Haha. That's going to be tricky if you don't want to sew since most lighter woven fabric tend to fray. Options to prevent fraying include using iron-on fusible interfacing on the edges, cutting the fabric with pinking shears, sewing the edge with a zig-zag stitch, hemming the edge, or you can even try a light coat of clear nail polish on the edge of the fabric. Nonwoven fabric will be your friend but be careful with super stretchy fabric as it can make using a sewing a machine a little more challenging. I'd honestly recommend visiting a local fabric store and asking for assistance in choosing a fabric based on your project and skill level. That way you can also feel it in person to see how heave/hot it might be. Best of luck!
5:00 i do have a question: wouldn't you want the bottom of the cloak be half the circumference of the circle rather than the diameter? wouldn't it fit better at 20 inches rather than 13? i'm genuinely curious before i make this for my sister
I'm not sure I follow your question since the 5 minute mark in the video is talking about the hood, not the bottom of the cloak. If you feel a different shape/size would be better, go for it. That's the beauty of these things. You can make them to your preference. If you want to test first, go grab an old sheet from a second hand store as cheap fabric to test with.
Wonderful tutorial! Thank you! I am assuming that only fleece can be used because it won’t fray? My mind was thinking, potentially, lace, velvet, satiny materials etc, but I guess that wouldn’t work?
You can use any material you wish, but some will be easier to use than others. If you choose a fabric that frays, you can hem the edges by sewing or using an anti-fray glue along the edges. A lace cloak would be beautiful!
This is awesome! I'm thinking of doing a Doctor Doom costume for either Halloween this year or a convention next and this is just what I need to make the cloak!
Thanks very much for this tutorial! I've never sewn before (I'm an adult) and I'm having my Dad help me with this. I'm not sure how to measure/calculate to get the base of the hood and neck hole measurements. I think that for the neck hole it's just measuring the circumference of the neck, correct? Thank you!
You're welcome. It's never too late to try something new :) See 03:33 in the video where I talk about neck hole measurements. 6.5 inches is a good standard size for the neck hole area. 04:50 For the base of the hood, measure out 2x whatever you did for the neck hole. I went 6.5 for the neck, so my hood base was 13. Hope that helps!
Is the 7 extra inch for the hood only for children size head..im confused about what size to put for me.... or is it collarbone to ankle + 7 icnhes + the arc for the hood.... its more or less same size head for adults?
The extra 7 inches take into account that the fabric drapes over your shoulders before falling to the floor. If you don't add that measurement on, it won't be the length you're hoping it will be because of this. That measurement will work for adults. Hope that helps :)
Nicely done! If a person wanted to make a, say, mid-thigh-length cloak just like this, would the 60" width be too overwhelming for that length, or is 60" just a basic width that fits most shoulders no matter the length? I do sew but I like that you added a method for those who don't (it's just kind of unfortunate so many of them are too pissed about seeing a sewing machine in the video as they're skimming through to actually listen to what you're saying about gluing).
I personally would still stick with the 58-60 or so inch width. This will allow the fabric to wrap around the shoulders nicely still. If you start getting to narrow it be closer to a cape look (which is fine if that's what you're looking for). Haha, it's all good. Those who truly want to make the cloak will actually listen since I give gluing instructions before showing the sewing. I appreciate your kind words. Have fun making your cloak and let me know if you have further questions!
@@GuidingBoltGaming Thanks so much! I appreciate the info! It looks like a very cloak-makey day outside (cold & windy) so I think this is today's project. 👍
The 9.25" will be the neck opening. If you have a thicker neck, that should be fine. Otherwise, I might shrink that an inch or 2. You can always cut the neck whole first, use chalk to measure the bottom cut line, test it, then cut the neck whole a littler deeper if need be and adjust the chalk line accordingly at the bottom.

I gotta ask, is your channel name a double play on both sewing and Dungeons & Dragons?
I at first thought of the spell name Guilding Bolt but then thought no, that's silly. We buy fabric by the bolt.
If I guessed correctly though, very clever!
You're right. It's totally a double play but it actually was originally just for D&D.
I really think cloaks need to come back in style. I don't know why they haven't. They are cool looking, easy to wear and comfortable for cool weather.
I couldn't agree more
Any tips on how to decide measurements for a toddler?!
Hmmm...I would think the process would be similar, just measurements that are much shorter. You could always test with some cheap fabric or an old sheet you don't mind cutting up first.
This is amazing! First time sower, wish me luck
You got this!
In a great majority of my videos, I wear a cloak. I was thinking about spending some of my time making an outfit that matches. I dont know how to sew, so this helps.
That's awesome. Do you have a vision for a matching outfit?
Yeah. Red cloak for sure, a black mask that can cover my face but I can still see through, havent thought clearly about my clothes underneath my cloak, and I already got something for my shoes, head, and waste
This will be perfect for my Adeptus Mechanicus Cosplay!
That's going to be a sweet cosplay!
the shadow wizard money gang thanks you for your service to the swag messiah
All hail the swag messiah
This was amazing. I will definitely be trying this out once i get some fabric.
So glad to hear! Have fun making your cloak
Beautifully explained. So detailed. Thoroughly enjoyed. ❤
Thank you for your kind words.
Thank you for the quick response ☺️ 😊 @@GuidingBoltGaming
i have no idea how to sew and am making a last-minute cosplay, you are a godsend!!
Thank you for the feedback. Glad the video helped you out. Who are you cosplaying?
@@GuidingBoltGaming im cosplaying ralsei from deltarune!! hes my first real cosplay and i couldnt be more excited
That's wonderful. Have a good time putting your outfit together!
thanks for the tutorial. i made one with satin. i followed your size, but turns out it’s too short for me. well i wanted it to be dragged on the floor, but it’s way up as same level as my calves. the problem i having is that i don’t have sewing machine and it took me almost 3 hours to get it done by hands.
i just add button for fasteners
Satin can be a trickier fabric to work with. Even though it's shorter than you had wanted, I bet it turned out lovely!
Thank you!! I’m doing a Hunter/Golden guard cosplay!
Have fun!
Thank you so very much! Easy, precise with good instructions to follow.
Thank you!
Thanks for being a loving stepmom.
cosplaying a book characters from scythe and this tutorial helped so much! thanks for easy format and method!!
I'm so glad!
Sounds like a beautiful nonetheless and something she can treasure moving forward.
Is it a possibility that you could make a tutorial with sleeves? I searched for withes robe tutorials on TH-cam but couldn't find any.
To be honest, I wouldn't know where to start with sleeves. I wish you luck. You might have local sewing shops that do classes?
What's a good material for summer? The same fleece? Or something thinner, in the American south so it gets hot 😅
Jersey knit like t shirt material might work
5:00 i do have a question: wouldn't you want the bottom of the cloak be half the circumference of the circle rather than the diameter? wouldn't it fit better at 20 inches rather than 13? i'm genuinely curious before i make this for my sister
Thank u for this tutorial... I finish making making my daughters cloak.. 🥰
That's awesome. I bet they're going to love it!
I made one of these today because of your help! Thank you so much!!!
You're very welcome
Thank you very, very much for this tutorial. Everything turned out to be just perfect!
Great to hear!
awesome tutorial
Thank you for the kind words
Bonjour, Merci pour ce tuto ! J ai réussi ma cape grâce à tes précieux conseils.
:) Profite bien de ta cape
This will be perfect for my cosplay!!
Have fun putting your cosplay together!
This is awesome! I'm thinking of doing a Doctor Doom costume for either Halloween this year or a convention next and this is just what I need to make the cloak!
Glad to hear. Have fund putting together your Doctor Doom!
Helped me with my Raven costume! THANKS
Great costume choice! Enjoy
You are such a great mom!
Thank you for the kind words
going to use this for my Halloween costume, thanks for the tutorial.
You're welcome. What's your costume going to be?
Süper. Thanks from İstanbul Türkiye.
Glad the cloak tutorial helped you out!
Today l make, one white and one red from velvet. Everybody surprized. You are a great teacher.
Thank you!💐It was the best tutorial, I did it.
Glad to hear it! Enjoy your new cloak :)
I wanna make one with the hand things for my club
Modify away :)
ok, so measuring my neck around is 18.5" and from my collar bone to 1" above me ankle bone is 56", so for drawing the shape, i'd need 56+9.25?
The 9.25" will be the neck opening. If you have a thicker neck, that should be fine. Otherwise, I might shrink that an inch or 2. You can always cut the neck whole first, use chalk to measure the bottom cut line, test it, then cut the neck whole a littler deeper if need be and adjust the chalk line accordingly at the bottom.
Thanks for making this, it’s a really easy and useful tutorial
Imma use this for my Shadow Wizard Money Gang costume 😂
Happy to assist. Have fun making your costume!
Bonjour,
Je vous remercie pour votre tutoriel 🙏🏻
Je désire savoir de combien mesure votre tissu au départ ? Combien sur combien ? S'il vous plaît merci 🙏🏻🌹
Re:
C'est pour une personne qui mesure combien ? Merci
Meilleurs vœux 2023🙏🏻🌹✨
You can use the measurement formulas I provide in the video to make the cloak fit whatever length you wish. You can custom size it to your needs :)
this was an excellent tutorial. thanks!
You're welcome!
How would I make this work for a 12 inches tall doll
I think the general principles still hold, just scaled way down. Pretend the doll is the person and make the measures the same way
I was going to buy paperweights but i have crystal skulls theyre heavy enough😅😅😅💜💜 and i have fabric pens and they come off with heat or a hairdryer also chalk too😊
Crystal skulls are pretty neat. Sounds like they'll work great
