- Today is a fun day! Today we take Rob Dyrdek's Chevy Sonic stunt car and decide to go full send with ZZPerformance V3 big wheel turbo! They also sent a lot of other goodies like high voltage coil packs, cold air intake, and much more! Once we got the car running I knew the best people to turn to with the 1.4 ecotech was ZZP - they even have a Chevy Sonic that runs 11 second quarter mile times! Once we get all this wrapped up our next mission is to get this thing either off road or on a rally stage! Thanks for watching and new uploads every Tuesday,Thursday, and Sundays!

When you say a lot more potential than people think, what does that mean exactly..? Numbers wise I guess. Genuinely curious, there must be a reason you're saying this.

@@danielnelson4881 That’s a fair point. A lot of people sleep on the platform and doubt when I tell them I’ve got nearly 200 wheel with a stock turbo and take them for a drive. ZZP is dipping their toes in the 300+whp range rn with their drag car. Progress is kinda slow since they’re the only ones developing for this platform, but I’m glad someone is at least.
@@danielnelson4881 Well with full ZZP bolt-ons + tune, you are looking at about 230 wheel on e85. And ZZP's shop mule is currently putting out just over 400 WHP. I would say thats a lot of potential from a 1.4 which only made 140 crank stock.
Hearing "ZZP" makes me miss my LSJ and my LNF so much. Such underappreciated cars.
ZZP swapped a either an LNF or LTG into a sonic a few years ago. That's the route David's build needs to go. The potential is far higher on the big block as compared to the small ecotec.

Well a veloster since hyundai decided to use a bigger turbo than most others. Also they hired a famous guy who worked at bmw i heard.

Turbokit? can't you swap the 1.5 turbo from the Civic Si? My advice go check on Malaysian and Thai tuning scene

My work car is the rs and its a decent car. The little turbo is kinda fun but i cant get too crazy cause it has cameras and all kinds of sensors

So, what happened to this car?
I thought the automatic platform can only handle around 200-220 hp before it seriously starts hurting your transmission? I want to get the bigger turbo kit to finish the build but I’m afraid it’s going to blow through the gearing.
You doing zzp cams too? Ported intake? Intercooler? E85? Plan on doing the steering wheel paddle shift mod?

Had gotten a full suspension kit and billet dog bones from ZZP for my 2003 Grand Prix, very good company and high quality products 👍🏼
I have a 98 cavalier coupe, 5 speed manual with the 2.2, and it has 200,000 miles on it and still running like a champ.
I bought a Chevy Sonic in 2012.. I bought the LTZ Turbo with the 6 speed manual. I loved that car.. With ZZP's help I was pushing 300HP. I absolutely loved that car.. Then some drunkard came through my neighborhood at 3am drunk as a sunk in his brand new camaro and hit the parked Sonic and launched 30 feet from where it was. Instant total. *CRY* I loved that car. My son loved that car. They will flat out scare the hell out of some d Bag in his Mustang 5.0 off the line. They are a riot!! Great car. Can't wait to see what you do with her!!!

This car is cool and I don't care who doesn't think so. I miss my Cruze a lot. I wish I'd kept it. I'm about to get an HHR SS next and zzp will be the go to for my go fast bits. I have an 04 Impala SS right now that I'm about to do a few mild upgrades on, nothing crazy because it's our family car, and zzp has nothing but amazing parts for it as well (SC 3800). My 05 GTP was a blast. The only downside to them was the tuning support was a bit underwhelming. Would love to see what one could do with the more modern TVS style blowers than the m90 or m112.
@@amagine1 few shops do tune them but they’re few and far between. there have a been few guys on facebook groups and forums that have done tvs blowers and even a whipple.

I miss my '09 Cobalt SS. Many ZZP goodies were installed and never had an issue.
I randomly found this while looking at some Veloster videos and freaked out when I realized this is the skateboard car! Super excited to see this thing turn into a teeny tiny canyon ripper.
I would never buy a cheap Chevy and build it up but this all in one turbo setup is interesting.

So I've had my sonic for a couple years can you explain what the buzzing noise is when you start the car
As a Sonic hatch 1.4T owner, I love seeing this platform getting some love. ZZP and Bad News Racing have some great parts for this car and with the right combo can get you up to 300 whp in a car that weighs the same as a BRZ/86.
300? The best I've seen is 240-260 before needing a race build. While I like the 1.4 in my Cruze. If I were going to go past the 200 mark, my money is going toward an LTG swap.
@@amagine1 Our new turbo that will be released later this summer/early fall will be an easy 300whp capable bolt on turbo on E85.
@@amagine1 MPFab and a few others have dyno'd over 300 whp with a bigger turbo than they installed on this video, intercooler, E85 and many other supporting mods. These engines are never going to put up 500+ whp numbers (mostly due to the restrictive heads), but 300 whp from a 1.4 L engine that can weigh 2,500-2,800 lbs depending on the trim is still impressive and a fast little car.

The skateboard example cleared up all my lack of understanding turdbos.
Bought a 2020 Awd Trax, went through ZZP and now its a full stage 2 car with tune and logging. TOTALLY worth the money.

How difficilt is to install that big wheel turbo? I only had zzp intake and zzp downpipe, I was thinking to get the intercooler, springs and coil pack from zzp after all of that the tune and finally turbo (I use it only for street and highway not for racing)

Since you talked to ZZP about the car. Talk to them about doing a 2.0 liter conversion. Much better performance potential and with your sonic being a prepped car anyway, should be far easier than it would be for some one with a street build.

That 1.4 MIGHT crack 230 before you need to do basically a pro level race build.
@@amagine1 what are you on about, dude? the ZZP sonic is at 400whp and the only *internal* component they changed was the valve springs. Pretty sure the most a bone stock sonic ever made totally unopened was like 280whp as well.

When i replaced the turbo in my cruze, I completely disconnected the cat from the turbo first. Made it way easier to pull the turbo out

Yes, these are newer Opel/Vauxhaull engines. This platform was created by Opel in the late 90s.

How can you still use the original turbo also?
Good content. Just small piece of clarification. The WGA is not electronic but a Pnuematic WGA. Now the vacuum line going to the WGA is electronically controlled by the ecu and not directly to vacuum. The zzp billet WGA is same Pnuematic WGA as stock but with heavier spring and made of billet aluminum.

Lol my dad is modifying my sisters cruze the same with literally everything zzp has for it since sonic and cruze are the same motor, looking to hopefully also get some different internals for the cruze. Its funny the looks we get when its driving down the street

Lol. The stock turbos fail often, I have replaced several. Can have the hole swap out done in about 1.5 hours. Would you believe Doorman makes replacement turbos for the Spark.

My mom just got a 2019 chevy sonic and from the outside looking in i was disgusted. But once i drove it a little bit and got to switching lanes and getting up to speed?? Fell in love with the car. The fact it’s affordable and everyone’s going for camaros, mustangs, and challengers… made those specific cars prices sky rocket to like unbelievable prices even for ecoboosts and v6’s… And this car is like so much quicker I didn’t even think people modded them lol! My next car will for sure be a 2020 and up RS trim.

You should swap a L67 into that car, leave the supercharger on, put a xp cam in it, turbo and upgrade the trans etc... It'd be a ripper
