what a beautiful young lady you are Rachel. Your so easy to listen to. This quilt is so beautiful and I love the hand quilting. What a gift for your sister, love the colors and the backing is so delicious. Thank you for bring me along on this very special project for your sister. 🥰
Beautiful quilt Rachel im sure your sister will love it. But you should sign the quilt label with your name, so people in the future will know who the maker was. Use a permanent marker pen as youve already sewn your label down. Well done you thats a big achievement hand quilting a large quilt.
Hi there love your videos. If you hate burying the knot... like me...😅 I don't use a knot. I have been. Doing this for years. I pull the thread through 2 in from where I want to start...then the first two stitches I make I do them as a back stitch and then continue a running stitch and It has never come out ...I end the same way as well. I end up leaving more thread to do this but love that I don't have to bury the knot. 😄So glad you still hand Quilt. Even if I do machine quilting I love the pace of hand quilting. You do so much beauiful work ...I have been quilting since I was in my twenties. It is still my passion. I love everything about you channel. The music, your soft voice, your projects thank you for sharing it all with us!!!❤️
Looks fabulous...do-do smell...you make me chuckle out loud!! Happy Christmas to you and your whole family! I think we are all under creative space time crunch at this time of year, but every stitch makes me smile, thinking of how much the gifted will enjoy it. The top hand quilting award winning teacher, Sandie Lush, has classes from time to time at the Welsh Quilt Centre, in Lampeter. I wish I could have taken her September class.
A lovely relaxing, slow-paced video with suitable background music. Your calm demeanor and voice made it a pleasure to watch! I do like to hand stitch the binding to the back as it seems to be show “respect” for all the work and care involved!
Such a nice soft video. Watched on my hands break from the EPP section of the 100 block quilt. Now I am all rested and ready to give it another go. Thanks for the lovely rest Rachel. Jean Colorado USA
Your sister's quilt has inspired me. I have a lot of leftover jelly roll strips that I've cut up into squares and will be starting my scrappy quilt after Christmas. Thank you sew much for the inspiration, Rachel. Gig from California.
@@stitchwithrachel 😂Is this viewer and I watching the same channel? LOL Seriously though, you have been conquering so many projects to the finish lately. I always enjoy your channel. 💜
I hand sewed a queen sized quilt for my son, with all his gangsta hoodies as backing and a creamy cotton fabric on the front. Then I appliquéd a very large film reel consisting of 45 photos on top of it. I also used the perle cotton number 8 ecru. This was only my second sewing project ever. I used a shashiko needle because of the thick hoodies. It was long and strong and very comfortable. I thoroughly enjoyed the hand sewing, though it took me 20 months and I finished it in Croatia, where he lives. Looking at your house blocks, I have started a village quilt for my next son who is in real estate, I took inspiration from Yoko Saito house block number 5. I also don’t use a hoop, and at 68 (I am a late starter in quilting) I find that I have to keep the entire quilt on the table so that there is no weight on my hands. I have enjoyed your video, as well as the chat. Thank you.
You did a great job! I love the scrappy binding and label. Please remember to sign your name, so that a hundred years from now someone with know who made this special quilt. You’ve inspired me to pull out a quilt that needs to be quilted and do it by hand.
Hi Rachel. Iv just found you recently. Thank you for your inspiration on making quilts. Iv just made my first baby quilt and watching you have started hand quilting it. I love your videos please keep going. You are so natural and easy to listen too. Keep crafting. From Ireland.
Hi Rachel Beautiful quilt...lucky sister! I'm sure she will cherish it for many years. I noticed that you always point out your 'mistakes' . There is no need because a. you produce stunning pieces of work filled with love. b. I once visited an Amish quilt exhibition and one of the quilters (from 1800's ) had written that only God is perfect and everything we do is slightly imperfect, making us human. I'm not religious but have remembered that ladies writing all my quilting life, especially when I've made an oops...and yes I leave them in! I suppose what I'm trying to say is don't worry about everything being perfect, whatever you make is amazing. P.S. For hand quilting I use Milliners needles, long, strong and a big enough eye for thicker thread. Keep sewing xx
Hi@@TheHawkeyeQuilter I have used many brands whatever I can find. The brand I have at the moment is 'Pony' Straw Milliners needles 3/8 x 10 product number # 02861 I paid £1.70 they are brilliant. Hope that helps.
You know Rachel, Over the years I’ve taken to making little booklets about what family and friends like in the sewing department. It is SO helpful to refer to these to figure out what I can make for gifts. I also enter the amount of time it may take to make a certain gifts, this way I can try to give myself enough time to finish the creation. The quilt you are making is more like the colors my sister loves. I enjoy the colors that you like. I have also decided (over the winter)to make some Victorian type of quilts for little growing premie babies as well as kids going thru life threatening illness while in the hospital. (I am a nurse who used to work in NICU and Pediatric ICU) I will start with a few to see how they go over. I LOVE the endearing message you made on your sewing machine for the quilt and the backing material, LOVELY. I think I will gift a tablet to my sister this Christmas so SHE can follow you. Thank you so much for your wonderful videos! I recommend you to all my sewing friends. Take care
I absolutely love squares and I'm thinking of using some of my stash to do some quilts to give to friends and family. I really love the quilting its lovely. Really think the whole quilt is great. Xxx
Looking great so far Rachel and your nearly there si nothing can really go wrong at this stage ! Obviously it is going to be a Big hit with your sister I'm sure. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your work xx
Hello, such a cool quilt for your sister. I have yet to hand quilt a large quilt with perle cotton. I have added hand quilting embellishments to a couple of quilts and I like to use Clover Golden Eye Chenille needles (NO. 24). The eye is big enough for #8 perle cotton.
Hi Rachel, Maybe an answer to a your needle problem, maybe use a sashiko neeldle. They are quite strong and You can get long or short. Also I use achenille size 20. it has a large eye and is quite strong. Hope this helps. Kath from Aus.😀🌺
Beautiful colours for your sisters quilt. I'm sure she will be delighted, because it's gorgeous, like everything you do. Your videos are so much fun to watch and the ones where you finish off quilts I really look forward to. Thanks for sharing what you do. Cath x UK
This was such a nice video! I love your sister’s quilt! I worked on putting the foundation stitch in to stitch a crochet border on my daughter’s quilt while you worked on yours. Thank you for being such delightful company! I’m using perle 8 also. The needle I am using is a sharp with a fairly big eye from a singer assortment. If I figure out anymore about what it is I’ll let you know. ❤. Also-the way I make my knots to bury them works really well for me-I make a French knot and just pull it to through the fabric. It holds! If it’s a thin thread I wrap it up to 5 times. If it’s perle 8 I only wrap it once.
Just love the fact that you have left the "inside out" squares in. After seeing one of your videos I was encouraged to get the " Alice's Wonderland Sampler Quilt book and am currently on block 30 and just like you here realised I had done the very same thing on one of the earlier blocks. After a moment of angst I decided life is to short especially at 74 so in it stays!
Your hand stitching is perfect! I love sitting with you while you show your piecing and stitching. It always puts me in a calm mood. I also like to see the quilts you make, you give me great ideas.

Rachel, my hand quilting totally changed for the better when I learned a old method of knot-free hand quilting. Starting is easy and genius, and finishing wtihout a knot is series of retracing your stitches while you weave thru the completed stitches and the batt, so essentially you weave each end of your thread into the batt and the stitches you are about to make / just made- they never pop out, and you feel no knots, and you make no holes in your fabrics.
