Lots of content here and some great gameplay. But it needs a patch and a bit of finesse for me. And its Steam reviews are horrid. The screen tearing and other issues Digital Foundry pointed out do indeed happen from time to time. I tested with cars on a track with every number of opponents available and anything above 24 starts to incur some performance and image issues
+ACG Cheers for bringing up how well the gamepad worked, it was a big point for me. Those shadows were horrendous and with the other issues I'll definitely wait. I still have Forza coming in under two weeks so that'll do me for racing.

Funny how people are so quick to bash anything project cars(not talking about the host of this vid). And "fanboys"? Some of you ignorant little turds talk so much shite over a sim vs a simCADE game. EVERY GAME has had glitches and bugs at the start and I like how no one will admit that project cars actually got BETTER and runs incredibly smooth. Who's to say PC2 won't get the same treatment. Forza and GT Sport will be awesome titles in their own regards so how come we can't simply acknowledge that all of these are what we've asked for but ACCEPT that each game will have some initial flaws. well considering the SMS PROMISED features on Pcars 1 that many of us backers paid them to develop. That decade old games had (animated pit crews for example) and a lot of tracks that they allegedly had the license for never showed up yet are in the new game. Yeah SMS deserves every single piece of bashing they get. Because instead of finishing the product, like they said they would. They went and "made a new product" that we have to pay for AGAIN. Fuck SMS.
9:57 - Not actually playable out of the box on a PS4 gamepad. You have to put ALL the assists on, full, especially #SteeringAssist, apart from Braking Assist (definitely OFF), and turn #PC2 into an arcade racer. Here's what fixes most cars/events: Steering Assistance - Yes Braking Assistance - No Driving Assists - Full Anti-Lock Brakes - High Stability Control - On Traction Control - High Steering Deadzone - 0 Steering Sensitivity - 0 Throttle Deadzone - 0 Throttle Sensitivity - 0 Brake Deadzone - 0 Brake Sensitivity - 100 Clutch Deadzone - 0 Clutch Sensitivity - 0 Speed Sensitivity - 100 Controller Damping - 75 Controller Vibration - 100 Minimum Shift Time - 0 RPM/Gear Display - Yes The steering Speed Sensitivity, at 100, is sometimes too high for slow cars/bends, and you have massive #UnderSteer and can't go round normal corners - needs to be 80 or less, maybe, sometimes - it's this setting which is broken in the game. One thing I found interesting in your review is your comment about the AI. From other reviewers who have had the opportunity to preview this game they seemed to feel like the AI had dramatically improved as some of the drivers would make mistakes and not take the absolute perfect line etc, and that was a huge selling point for me (as mostly an offline player). So yeah, I find that interesting that you haven't had the same experience ...
Good AI has never been defined to me. You have GT 1 AI that is fast but sticks to a track line like glue. You have GT5/6 AI that is slow ( except for the lead car), and cedes way to you . You have NFS/Motorstorm AI that is both fast but deliberately goes out of its way to ram you off the track . You have driveclub AI that is fast, and incredibly reactive etc. Iv played hundreds of racing games and honestly peopel who claim games have Bad AI are talking out their ass. An AI is only bad if it's slow or downright intrusive. I don't see why people insist on having AI competitors wreck every damn race. Its rare when you have some idiot overshoot a turn in real life
I bought the PC version before it went on sale (in November) and I can confidently state that it is worth every dollar. The sheer amount of cars and the variety of tracks as well as the innovative interface provides a treasure of content to explore over a series of weeks if not months. If the multiplayer quick matches and leagues kick in, then people can finally say farewell to the pay to race multiplayer games such as IRL. The racing engine will please everyone except for the hard-core ultra-realists who demand a type of realism that will not allow any forgiveness in the racing model that isn't explictly compensated by the car setup or endemic to the car itself. But time always tells in major titles like this. The sheer improvement over PC 1, provides a visceral satisfaction; akin to the feeling that: yes! I was right; NOW the car feels like the physics I could at least imagine as possible if not EXACTLY corresponding to reality. The A.I. is not perfect but the 2 degrees of adjustment : Skill and Aggression; allow the user to customize a race with greater flexibility. Now you can run a race with a skill closing matching or even exceeding your typical potential and actually enjoy the experience without frustration.

I can't believe that you are one of the ONLY people calling out the bugs and issues. I bought it and it sux -I really dont care about them making it simulate the clouds and atmosphere to generate rain, when the game has annoying graphics stuttering, and the campaign is utterly marred by the terrible AI. Shame on those other reviewers.
If those graphical issues, the loading times and the problems with AI are the biggest issues here btw, and everything else works good, I think I would still enjoy this one! Especially since it seems to have quite a lot of Rallycross content. I bought PC1 not long after launch, and still had some fun with it, despite it's broken state... and Rallycross being abscent! :D

Nice review as always. This year I a bit of a beast in terms of racing games. Besides project cars, we had that rally7 game you reviewed, a dirt game, GT sports and Forza Motorsport 7.

Always a fantastic review! It looks a little rough, no doubt. Though I really like the dynamic weather system. Love the increase in cars and track layouts, as well. But ultimately, I'll take your advice and wait for a sale. Forza 7 is upon us, as is the next GT.
which in FH3 was due to drive setting. If you were a guy like me with a very small but fast boot drive for OS only and other drives for games (Twin samsung 850evos in RAID 0 for D: drive aka gaming) and a pair of WD caviar black in RAID 1 for mass storage, you couldn't get the game to run, because it wouldn't install it on your D: drive. Huge fucking oversight.
Racing games aren't just one broad genre where most games are interchangeable. If you want something different than rally or F1 - eg. GT, touring cars, maybe some street legal supercars, lower end open wheelers, prototypes - the choices in the sim genre on consoles are really not very plentiful at all. Yes, the XBox has Forza (the one game series that has several times made me consider buying an XBox) and the PS4 will very soon have GT Sports which in many areas still looks decidedly underwhelming to me so far. But other than that you have... well, Project Cars 1 and Assetto Corsa. The latter is a very fine driving sim with some of the best handling I've ever felt - even thinking back quite a while to the years where I still had a gaming PC and various Logitech wheels (I'm now on PS4 with a Thrustmaster wheel) - but it's quite limited in its track selection, on consoles it's limited to 16 cars on track, no proper career mode, no night time and weather, only just got patched with AI that can actually race. So it's basically great for hotlapping on a limited selection of tracks, leaving Project Cars (1 and 2) as the only full featured multi class racing sim on consoles that's competing with respectively Forza and GT.
Nice PC2 review. I'm an enthusiastic sim racer with loads of hours in various games including PCARS and this is a pretty even handed early review of the retail release. Enjoyable to watch too, thanks for making.
Glad to see they improved the Audio compared to the first one but unfortunate that the shadows are still the same garbage, also in the first game during sunsets it was very hard to see anything when you are in cockpit view, like unnaturally hard to see compared to real life when driving during sunsets, I hope this was fixed?

Great review as always. Glad you mentioned the loading times... that was my main issue with PC1 and that is why I won't be getting PC2. I think PC1 was fun but the loading times were so bad i just stopped playing it. Keep up the great work!

I have a feeling the PC release is going to be drastically better. I've been watching tons of Beta PC gameplay and none of it looks like this. Maybe issues cropped up in the last moments but chances are PC is just the definitive version, though Xbox X may come in a close 2nd place if they give it a nice patch for the X.

Unlike most people nowadays, I could care less about graphics. As long as the game is fun to play, It's a win for me! Preordered and I can't wait to play it tomorrow.

Entirely disagree.. Especially your point about the cars having a "tactile" feel; these vehicles have the most tactile and "real" feel of any driving game I've played in recent memory. Project Cars 2 improves upon the first in every way and focuses heavily on simulation as opposed to say, Forza, and nails it. I'm absolutely loving it!
The one thing i couldn't stand with the first game was the sense of speed or lack of, my eyes were telling me i was doing 30 the speedometer was telling me i'm going 60
Project Cars was fine while Gran Turismo was absent from PS4, but now the king is back! and this time it's all about GT Sport, also PCars doesn't support the PSVR, at least GT sport will have a game mode for VR.
I'm afraid GT sport will not bring back the glory days of GT. Mostly because of the lack of career mode and FULL psvr support. Still pissed about the latter :(
I wanted PC2 to be good since it seemed like it has a lot to offer. I was going to pick it up day 1 for the PC. Some of the TH-cam racing videos featuring PC2 had me hyped. The cars, sound and sense of speed looked great. Now I'll wait for a sale and a couple of patches if I buy it at all. Seriously, what is with no headlights at night? Anybody else notice how in the right hand drive cars, the character model still moves his right hand to shift? I don't know how or why I noticed, but now its kinda annoying.
Sounds wicked, small issues aside, defo getting this day one, loved the first. Tell me, can you still remove the drivers hands and wheel from the cockpit on the xbox version? I find it so offputting when using my rig, pcars one wad epic for allowing this, sewt movement and fov all on console version
I bought the first Project Cars on XBox when it went on sale and got very frustrated because the gamepad controls were messed up and no matter what settings I tried, I could never get it to the point where I could enjoy driving like I could in Forza or Gran Turismo. Excellent review and it reinforces my wait and see approach to Project Cars 2. Would love to see you do a review of Forza Motorsport 7 when it comes out.
I agree on you with all the bugs, but for the physics and the force feedback on the steering wheel its easily one of the best sim racing games there is....
i have the first one, and have barely played it, like less than an hour according to steam. i just found it so hard to get into, but ive never tried any other true racing sim, so cant say if its the game or just me

Thought I was going crazy playing this, while I constantly perceived frame drops and stutter but my OSD stayed pinned at 60. Really sucks that there is no new racer to properly play on PC! Forza 7 and Project Cars 2 both have deep engine code problems.
Great review! It really came across as genuine and honest which is difficult to find for PCars2 reviews. Most critics seem to have a chip on their shoulder with rival games and tend to simply gloss over the flaws. I'll take your advice and wait for a sale (or until the more glaring bugs have been patched!).

The PS4 Pro renders at 2560x1440p that is upscaled to 4K. Better meshes, better details, higher shadows, high def textures.

If you were a guy like me with a very small but fast boot drive for OS only and other drives for games (Twin samsung 850evos in RAID 0 for D: drive aka gaming) and a pair of WD caviar black in RAID 1 for mass storage, you couldn't get the game to run, because it wouldn't install it on your D: drive. Huge fucking oversight.

Racing games aren't just one broad genre where most games are interchangeable. If you want something different than rally or F1 - eg. GT, touring cars, maybe some street legal supercars, lower end open wheelers, prototypes - the choices in the sim genre on consoles are really not very plentiful at all.
Yes, the XBox has Forza (the one game series that has several times made me consider buying an XBox) and the PS4 will very soon have GT Sports which in many areas still looks decidedly underwhelming to me so far.
But other than that you have... well, Project Cars 1 and Assetto Corsa. The latter is a very fine driving sim with some of the best handling I've ever felt - even thinking back quite a while to the years where I still had a gaming PC and various Logitech wheels (I'm now on PS4 with a Thrustmaster wheel) - but it's quite limited in its track selection, on consoles it's limited to 16 cars on track, no proper career mode, no night time and weather, only just got patched with AI that can actually race. So it's basically great for hotlapping on a limited selection of tracks, leaving Project Cars (1 and 2) as the only full featured multi class racing sim on consoles that's competing with respectively Forza and GT.

Glad to see they improved the Audio compared to the first one but unfortunate that the shadows are still the same garbage, also in the first game during sunsets it was very hard to see anything when you are in cockpit view, like unnaturally hard to see compared to real life when driving during sunsets, I hope this was fixed?

Great review as always. Glad you mentioned the loading times... that was my main issue with PC1 and that is why I won't be getting PC2. I think PC1 was fun but the loading times were so bad i just stopped playing it. Keep up the great work!

I have a feeling the PC release is going to be drastically better. I've been watching tons of Beta PC gameplay and none of it looks like this.
Maybe issues cropped up in the last moments but chances are PC is just the definitive version, though Xbox X may come in a close 2nd place if they give it a nice patch for the X.

A solid review, still on the fence on this series as the first one didn't have much in the way of American cars I like at launch. No Mopar either sadly.
The pendulum effect too whenever you take a corner, thats what rlly got me, and it was impossible to counter steer once you over steered

How many project cars are in the game project cars? when i think project car, i think building up an old beat up barn find car into a beast of a car.

Entirely disagree.. Especially your point about the cars having a "tactile" feel; these vehicles have the most tactile and "real" feel of any driving game I've played in recent memory. Project Cars 2 improves upon the first in every way and focuses heavily on simulation as opposed to say, Forza, and nails it. I'm absolutely loving it!
I hope they fix the shadows. It is very distracting and ruins the replays
The one thing i couldn't stand with the first game was the sense of speed or lack of, my eyes were telling me i was doing 30 the speedometer was telling me i'm going 60

Project Cars was fine while Gran Turismo was absent from PS4, but now the king is back! and this time it's all about GT Sport, also PCars doesn't support the PSVR, at least GT sport will have a game mode for VR.
I'm afraid GT sport will not bring back the glory days of GT. Mostly because of the lack of career mode and FULL psvr support. Still pissed about the latter :(

I played the original PC with a game pad and didn't struggle with it at all. What was so bad about it?
I wanted PC2 to be good since it seemed like it has a lot to offer. I was going to pick it up day 1 for the PC. Some of the TH-cam racing videos featuring PC2 had me hyped. The cars, sound and sense of speed looked great. Now I'll wait for a sale and a couple of patches if I buy it at all. Seriously, what is with no headlights at night? Flickering shadows I would turn off until they are fixed. Thanks for the excellent review ACG!

Anybody else notice how in the right hand drive cars, the character model still moves his right hand to shift? I don't know how or why I noticed, but now its kinda annoying.

Tell me, can you still remove the drivers hands and wheel from the cockpit on the xbox version? I find it so offputting when using my rig, pcars one wad epic for allowing this, sewt movement and fov all on console version

I bought the first Project Cars on XBox when it went on sale and got very frustrated because the gamepad controls were messed up and no matter what settings I tried, I could never get it to the point where I could enjoy driving like I could in Forza or Gran Turismo. Excellent review and it reinforces my wait and see approach to Project Cars 2. Would love to see you do a review of Forza Motorsport 7 when it comes out.
I agree on you with all the bugs, but for the physics and the force feedback on the steering wheel its easily one of the best sim racing games there is....

i have the first one, and have barely played it, like less than an hour according to steam. i just found it so hard to get into, but ive never tried any other true racing sim, so cant say if its the game or just me

Thought I was going crazy playing this, while I constantly perceived frame drops and stutter but my OSD stayed pinned at 60. Really sucks that there is no new racer to properly play on PC! Forza 7 and Project Cars 2 both have deep engine code problems.
Great review! It really came across as genuine and honest which is difficult to find for PCars2 reviews. Most critics seem to have a chip on their shoulder with rival games and tend to simply gloss over the flaws. I'll take your advice and wait for a sale (or until the more glaring bugs have been patched!).
