    I loved the way Oscar musical directors, particularly Henry Mancini and Bill Conti, conducted overtures of Best Original Score nominees at the top of the show. I wish they could do this all over again!

      I agree. They claim that they can't play the film clips that were part of the Oscars, because they'd have to pay for the rights. That's NONSENSE. The studios would be crazy if they turned down such an offer of FREE PUBLICITY.

    Lovely Opening view of the LA Smog. Barbara Barrie was also nominated for an Emmy in the short lived TV spin off of BREAKING AWAY, one of the few performers to have Emmy and Oscar nominations for the same role.

      The movies that won tended to be better, but as television, the ceremonies were nowhere near as well produced or entertaining. Most of the 70s telecasts dragged along humorlessly.

    9:30 - "I just happened to have a Monday night free" - Johnny hinting there at his new NBC contract which started in 1980 where he only worked Wednesdays to Fridays, with Monday night guest hosted and Tuesdays was the Best of Carson.

    Carson had instant credibility...we were all used to him for 20 years at this point, he was "cute" and teddy bear like, and beloved so if he made a goof, you didn't care because you cared for him. Sorry Jimmy and the pathetic fact that there are NO hosts today...these are times gone by!

    incredibly found in this video now in 2019 me and my 3 friends who were living in 1980 in Pasadena. We appear the 4 all Brazilians in the video in the bleachers. I taking pictures of the stars.

    It was then a true celebration; classic, and actors where appreciative of they winnings and not complaining what is happening in the world. The movies suppose to take us away from realty not trying to push some political nonsense at us. Those where the good times. .

    Notice how good the symphony and music was back then. In today's polibuero police State they do strict background checks , so if a great musician has a past DUI offense or a domestic argument offense., then he or she is not allowed to work. They do not want people independent and working but instead dependant on government welfare checks and divided etc..

    Carson, who hosted Reagan's ball nine months later found out two things...first it was being televised and ABC was making $6 million off his free performance, and the producer was the same guy who produced the Oscars here and CUT his opening. Let's say JC was PISSED...you don't cut Carson's monologue!

    Ya is safely stored but who the hell is going to watch it young kids today don't even watch the movies that was done many years ago it's not that Hollywood needs money is the producers and the major Hollywood Studios they always RI scrap movies which in this business they call remakes young people do not watch movies that was made many years ago if it's a remake of the original motion picture they don't bother looking at 1933 they look at 2020 remake of the same title young viewers will never know what it's like to see a movie that was me 15 years ago prior to the Remake that is made today
