- This is an original 16mm Scopitone conversion, not a copy. I used an actual old scopitone player, fed the signal to an old VHS, of which I then fed the output to a Canopus ADVC300. This 'summer of love' 1967 hit record was remuxed in 2006. Also fixed audio-sync.
Sound engineer of this famous mono mix was Keith Grant. Vocals and piano played by Gary Brooker. Matthew Fisher played the Hammond organ, and these original lyrics were written by Keith Reid;

Bought the 45 in seventh grade. Mother walked by my bedroom, stopped and listened until the ending. "That's just lovely," she said. I took care of Mother the last four years of her life, losing her nine months ago. Even after she became bedridden and nonverbal from dementia, she always responded to music and she still smiled when "Whiter Shade of Pale" came up on the CD rotation. "It's lovely, isn't it Mother?"
This particular track causes a lump to form in my throat, immediately upon hearing Fisher (cowriter, also) play two notes of the intro to this iconic song. Sixties/seventies rock and R&B music touches my soul like nothing else in existence.

I was driving my Dad back from Edinburgh hospital following cancer treatment and asked him what his favourite song was. He said it was this.

Like to listen to this on a rainy day
My mom used to play this song alot when I was really little. She was listen to it while cleaning and I asked her why she listened to such sad music. She told me that she listened to it because it made her a little less sad inside. My mom passed away 9 years ago. I have recently been listening to her older music but it were all on burned cd's. This song didn't work. I cried half the day when I couldn't get her favorite cd to play. Well about 2 weeks ago now I was watching "the 10th kingdom" this song was on it and the dad in the movie said the name. I looked it up and listened to just this song for 3 hours crying and smiling and rembering my mommy. I am 31 years old and let me tell you, you never stop needing your mom. This song makes her feel close.

This was my mom’s favorite song. I played it at her service. She died May 12 (on my birthday) 2020. I hadn’t been able to visit her in the hospital because of Covid. She was about to turn 70. An undiagnosed cancer got her. We were talking and laughing, the best conversation in years, just a day before her death, on the phone. There had been people protesting the lack of religiosity of this song prior to her service, but it would have made her happy. She had been sick with Lupus for a long time so I had been practicing her service in my mind for years. I had a long time to think about what she would like. Due to Covid and medaling relatives, she didn’t have the service I would have had for her, but this song got played. That was a sweet emotional victory.

Hoe erg missen we Peter. Juist nu met het maatschappelijke debat. Hij kon verbaal zo goed ‘opkomen’ voor het juiste. Er was nooit een speld tussen te krijgen.
Kijk maar even hoe Hiddema dat deed dan. Nooit fan geweest van Peter, wat hem overkomen is, is natuurlijk diep treurig, maar totale verheerlijking is ook niet nodig.

Born in 79.. by 87 I remember my dad use put this on replay n it would drive me insane. I'm 39 now n 2018.. 30 years later, it's one of my most fav. Song.. many memories I'd love to go back and say, play it again ... December 2018.. bring in another year ..
