Arguably since Nintendo has abandoned the Wii U there is now even more of a reason to get one.
The homebrew ,mod & emulation scene for this thing turn it into a dream for fans (& a nightmare to Nintendo)
+projects like Pretendo are trying to restore the network features & even miiverse

Just got one the other day (never owned it before; I thought it was just an upgrade Wii (which I found gimmicky and never got), the U meaning upgrade, for the longest time). Any tips on where to start with it?

Of course you should buy one. To mod it. It’s a GameCube essentially. It plays the iso’s natively. The Wii U games are cheap as heck. It offers HD visuals.

Where should one start to mod it? Just got one and received it the other day. Still haven't unpacked it. Looking at some of the physical releases, because I still collect a bit, and those are CHEAP but if possible (?) would like to play iso's of everything GC-Wii U.

I think what you said about being able to play the most Nintendo games out of all systems on Wii U is the best reason to buy one. There is still so much that Wii U offers and it’s a shame that it gets such a bad rep because it has such an awesome library.

  • @matthewsano6006

I used to hook all of my consoles up, from NES to Wii, just to play each game on original hardware but after a while, the convenience that comes with having the Wii U play so many legacy Nintendo games is so nice. And you don't need to worry about an online subscription to play those games.
I think the Wii U is worth it for that alone.
And because it sold only 13.5 million units, it will probably be one of the more expensive consoles to buy as time goes by.

One of the interesting aspects for "purists" when it comes to homebrewing the wii u is that since it packs the wii hardware inside it, when you load gamecube games into it you're not actually emulating the games, but playing them just like the original hardware.

In my humble opinion the Wii U is one of the most overlooked systems. It’s right up there with the GameCube and Sega Dreamcast. And similar to those systems I expect certain Wii U games to go way up in value

Most of what made the Wii U the Wii U is gone. Unless if you mod it. Miiverse was the life and soul of the Wii U. Every time you booted up the console, you'd see a bunch of Miis with Miiverse posts under certain games in the Wara Wara Plaza. No other console has replicated that sense of community before or since. The games on the Wii U are hit or miss. The good games and best sellers didn't use the Game Pad in a meaningful way, hence why most of them either got ported or got a sequel on Switch. And most of the games that did use the Game Pad weren't that great most of the time. Remember Star Fox Zero and Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival? Literally, the only reason why I still have a Wii U is because of Wind Waker. Tbh, Twilight Princess didn't need a remake of it on the Wii U. It can already play the Wii version. Plus, it came out a whole year before the Switch came out. They could have waited for TP to be on Switch in late 2017, early 2018, but we got it on the Wii U for some reason. For people that already have a Switch, there's no need for a Wii U, especially if your first console was a Switch. I have a Wii U, and I want to get rid of it. The Wii U will always be the weirdest console to ever been made, and for all the wrong reasons.

For any wanting to play StarFox Zero listen carefully, don't play the main story first. Go to training mode and spend about two hours learning the controls, because the motion controls are kinda complicated. There's a minus button that swap screens and you have the ability to turn the motion controls on or off in the pause menu. It's easier to shoot everyone in first person mode, where as all ranged mode is easier for avoiding enemies.

I still think a lot of aspects of the Wii U are even better than the switch. The Wii U has more functionality. The Wii U had an internet browser, it had a Netflix app and Amazon prime app, it had WeChat, miiverse and the virtual console, you could play games in another room while your friend played on the TV you can play on the tablet. Also you could use the tablet as a TV remote! The switch seems so basic and featureless in comparison...
It just seems like the Wii U was the last time Nintendo really tried. The switch has always seemed like a last-minute panic console that was thrown together with off-the-shelf parts in order to save their ass at the last second whereas the Wii U seems like they actually tried to make something unique and special it just didn't catch on because of the bad marketing. Plus I really like the tablet and TV integration because it made playing DS games on there really cool and games that used the tablet used it and really exciting ways that you just don't get on the switch.
I think the system is absolutely worth owning simply for the tablet integration and some of the first-party games and then of course the exclusives that are still locked on the console.

I found a black wii u for $152 including tax. Freaking wish it was lower since it lacked the pro controller but ehhhh, I still think many youtubers lie when they say their bundles with blah blah blah 36 games only costed them $110 unless they negotiated with the seller one way or another. Atleast buying the games themselves are very cheap.

I have no nostalgia I just like the hardware and potential. It's my favourite of my 4 Nintendo consoles (Wii/DS/WII U/3DS). I think the games are good even if similar to the Wii but also the ones people ignore are good like Devils Third and Tank Tank Tank.
3DS Smash controller support is a dodgey purchase by Nintendo/Smash team but a cool idea to connect the two Smash 4 versions besides Amiibo and levels/characters. Nintendo Land is great uses of the hardware and fan service like Astro's Playroom does.
I wished GameCube controller support was as good as Wii/Switch was but oh well Indies are good those that are physical are a bonus.
Lego/Skylanders is something, other Tots to Life are eh.
Eshop eh too soon. Everything else or depends I think what people want it for. Wii sure. Wii U sure.
Non-Switch deluxe versions for cheaper or original experience sure The dual screen experience yes.
Hacked sure I guess I don't care to do that with mine. Indies with touchscreen or dual screen benefits are great.
The differences in the early western AAA games sure. Whatever Japanese games sure.
I like the idea of the Wii U even if not as expanded as I'd like and limited like why no manual (especially for GBA games why does it pause the game seriously) or web browser on a different screen besides the gameplay.
It's so locked down hardware limitations and Nintendo design grrr.
The Xbox One 2013 dashboard was Windows 8 like it could do it. Then had to take it away because boooooo customers and Microsoft changing dashboards 4 times and the 2nd one and 4th one are so similar to me it's a joke. I don't want typical consoles it's too boring.
I'd get a PC if I wanted that (besides Steam control input or the emulation of old PC and of course emulation for console is understandable enough) or a phone. I want console not just because it's middle hardware for gaming but it can do more as games get more and more standardised and handful aren't so hardware gimmicks are a thing for me.
I don't see the Switch 2 being what I want a Evercade/PS Vita or Vita TV kind of approach to the Wii U of same hardware but handheld and dual screen support and syncing being possible and people can use it however they want.
We aren't getting Samsung Galaxy Fold or Surface Duo like any time Nintendo does their own thing so but if it's cloud you bet I'm skipping it. Android cloud/eh local are so boring by Logitech G Cloud and other companies attempts.

IMO, if you ever planned on purchasing a Wii U, now is the time to do it. At the time of me typing this, the Eshop is already shut down but any update patches you may need for the games or the hardware itself, are still available to download. Once Nintendo fully flips the online servers off or publishers turn off the capability to update games with the latest patches, the console and it's games will start to become obsolete and pointless to collect for.
