Ronald Joseph DeFeo Jr. (September 26, 1951 - March 12, 2021) was an American mass murderer who was tried and convicted for the 1974 killings of his father, mother, two brothers, and two sisters in Amityville, New York. Sentenced to six counts of 25 years to life, DeFeo died in prison on March 12, 2021. The case inspired the book and film versions of The Amityville Horror.
Around 6:30 p.m. on November 13, 1974, DeFeo, who was then 23, entered Henry's Bar in Amityville, Long Island, New York, and declared: "You got to help me! I think my mother and father are shot!" DeFeo and a small group of people went to 112 Ocean Avenue, which was located near the bar, and found that DeFeo's parents were dead inside the house. One of the group, DeFeo's friend Joe Yeswit, made an emergency call to the Amityville Police Department, who searched the house and found that six members of the family were dead in their beds.
The victims were Ronald Jr.'s parents: Ronald DeFeo Sr. (43) and Louise DeFeo (née Brigante, 43); and his four siblings: Dawn (18), Allison (13), Marc (12), and John (9). All of the victims had been shot with a .35 caliber lever action Marlin 336C rifle around 3:00 a.m. that day. The children had been killed by single shots, while the parents had each received two shots. Physical evidence suggests that Louise DeFeo and her daughter Allison were awake at the time of their deaths. According to Suffolk County Police, all the victims were found lying face down in bed. The DeFeo family had occupied 112 Ocean Avenue since purchasing the house in 1965. The six victims were later buried in Saint Charles Cemetery nearby in Farmingdale.
Ronald DeFeo Jr., also known as "Butch", was the eldest child of the family and was its lone surviving member. He was taken to the local police station for his own protection after suggesting to police officers at the scene of the crime that the killings had been carried out by a mob hitman named Louis Falini.
However, an interview at the station exposed serious inconsistencies in his version of events. The following day, he confessed to carrying out the killings himself; Falini, the alleged hitman, had an alibi proving that he was out of state at the time of the killings. DeFeo told detectives: "Once I started, I just couldn't stop. It went so fast." He admitted that he had taken a bath and redressed, and detailed where he had discarded crucial evidence such as blood-stained clothes, the Marlin rifle, and cartridges, before going to work as usual.
On November 21, 1975, DeFeo was found guilty on six counts of second-degree murder. On December 4, 1975, Judge Stark sentenced DeFeo to six sentences of 25 years to life.
DeFeo was held at the Sullivan Correctional Facility in the town of Fallsburg, New York until his death, with all of his appeals and requests to the parole board being denied.

My mum and I went to see this movie when I was a kid and it didn’t scare me at all. I think my neighbours kids went with us too.
There was another 2019 movie Amityville Murders - I believe it's the closest we're going to be to the TRUTH

I was 8 yrs old & lived in Westbury NY in 1974. I remember this was in all the papers & all over the news.
Next month will be the 50th Anniversary of this crime.
Just mentioning “Amityville” would give you chills back in the day….. I remember watching some the older movies as a kid and always someone telling me “you know this a true story” …and that made its even more frightening

I remember when the book came out. I laid by the roaring fireplace and read the whole book in one night. It was very disturbing and I definitely got no sleep. When I finally fell asleep, it was with the covers completely up to my chin. I think it was the only time, I was glad I shared a room with my sister. 😂😱 Thanks for another great video Scott! 👍🏻

There's no excuse for domestic violence and if he father was abusing his mother I wouldn't have blamed him for offing his dad... Absolutely obsessed with your videos. Found one by accident about a month ago and have been trawling through them one by one. A lot of your videos have led me to find out more about the cases, result being I’ve watched a few films and documentaries. Can you do a true crime on the couple of teenagers that went missing when they were on a school day off, can’t quite remember where it took place but they had crossed a bridge and went missing and eventually found dead near a river. One of the pictures that they took of each other when they were out showed a man following them. Hope you can figure it out and maybe do a video to honour them ❤️🔥❤️🔥

I have heard the name of The Amityville Horror house but didn't know it had a story. How he can do that to his parents and especially his brothers and sisters is beyond me. Thank you for telling the story. Thats a tough one to tell. RIP the DeFeo family.

I definitely wouldn't want to live in a house that people were murdered in. I don't care how nice or how famous the house is. Just knowing you're sleeping in a room where someone was shot to death is just too creepy for me.
It must have been cheap there's a house where I live where nine people were killed and people have lived there ever since I drive by everyday on the way to work

There was a time it would have bothered me but I'm kind of over it. If the murder was unsolved, that would be different because I'd be worried about the killer returning for some reaso. Or if I was seeing dead people or having stuff move around, I'd be out of there but bad things happen and people die. The story is gruesome but it's in the past.
That guy was given everything he could possibly want or need and this is how he chose to repay his family? If his dad really was abusive, why did he still kill the rest of the family? It really takes a lot to kill one or two people, to kill all six members of your own immediate family is incomprehensible. The really sad thing is, the grandparents outlived the family (except for him) by over 10 years. Unimaginable having to bury not only your child but your young grandchildren and living with that for so long after. RIP to the Defeo family.

My in-laws lived right around the corner from these horrendous murders. I would walk past the home weekly. Nothing but sadness. And not scary at all. The present owners just want to be left alone.

I bet most of the neighbors are used to the traffic of people catching a glimpse of the house. Except that lady of course and I remember that video. No one will ever know exactly what happened other then the fact that 6 people lost their lives. Thanks Scott. A story never forgotten due to the tragedies. You know where I grew up on the West side of Chicago,. The neighbors house next door had a tragic incident after I had moved on but my mother and father still reside. My mother called me early on evening about 7 pm crying saying that there had been some shootings. I arrived ,an later found out it was domestic. The owner of the two flat a older lady was dead,Her disabled boyfriend ( disabled from the waist down...dead. Her younger nephew suicide. He was a ex war veteran , had shoot her boyfriend, shoot her and then himself. This was all because her boyfriend found out her and her nephew was having an affair. These stories do exist. Rip to all.
