Welcome back to my Skeksis biography series! Today's video will be about the most skilled, fearsome, bloodthirsty creature of all the Lords of the Crystal: skekMal The Hunter!

It was more than a deer hunter, he was an excellent Warrior and I respect his ability to go for the thrill of the hunt to match his abilities against the best of the best! Though his intentions are evil there is some nobility to his methods
Such a terrifying creature, even among the Skeksis. The fact that he uses all four arms is probably my favourite aspect of him, makes him all the more menacing

Not gonna lie, when the hunter brandished his second pair of blades to show all 4, general grievous just sprung to mind ; p
Duel wielding in the real world is impractical unless you are an extremely skilled fighter now with that in mind the hunter is a Quadro wielding maniac which speaks volumes about his skill perhaps the deadliest creature to ever live on thra!
This guy is basically avian Grievous, and I love him for that.

And that is what the skeksis hate most, that they can’t be individuals. SkekSa made this clear in the 3rd book.

Yes. Although the subtitles say otherwise, that’s exactly what SkekMal says when he begins to shake and realized that UrVa was plunging to his death.
The skeksis viewed the great devision as a victory being independent from their true selves and each half joined it's comrades but skekMal decided to be independent from the others but like all skeksis his soul was connected forever to urVa

He clearly has some past history with Rek'yr. I imagine the Dousan took him in and tried to teach him of their ways, as both they and skekMal were outsiders to their respective species. However, the only teaching he took to heart was wearing bones (in an obvious perversion of the Dousan tradition of wearing protection charms) and took their "worship" of death to an insane, self-serving level.
Personal skekmal is the most brutal and scariest skeksis, he literaly is a wendigo !!
Skek Ung the. Garthim General probably just as brutal and more intimidating! But Skek Mal is in a league of his own.
I doubt skekMal would have approved of wiping out all life on Thra, which skekUng intended to do in the movie novelization.

I like how when they used CGI on him running through the trees sparingly, it gives a sort of unnatural quality to him witch is probably what it would feel like to be hunted by him

4 arms wielding 4 blades, collects trophies (Lightsabers) from worthy prey, very physically capable, grievous with his scuttling and climbing walls, and the hunter parkoring around the trees like tarzan, a mask over their face that is very much like a skull, and anything else I may have missed.
@@Vol-Tear Yes, exactly! Especially when skekMal revealed his four arms with swords before Rian and Ordon, which reminded me of when Grievous revealed his four arms with lightsabers to Obi-Wan.

What is also an amusing thought is that skektek made himself a robo eye and the slave master a robo hand so is not too far fetched to think that he could make the hunter a robo body, he even has the perfect time to do it when the hunter returns to the castle on the verge of death.

Does make me wonder if they drunk essence would they start growing back? and why does skektek not get his eye back from essence? maybe it can only heal wounds not regrow lost limbs. idk is fun to wonder tho ;p

I often described SkekMal as the Predator from the famous franchise. A brutal creature who wore his bloody trophies on his belt, killing anything that he seen as a worthy pray. Something interesting I found on SkekMal is how, unlike his fellow Skeksis, didn't need to absorb the power of the Dark Crystal to stay alive. Much like SkekSa the Mariner, he spent years away from the Castle to continue his hunts. Something to also think about is how if the Hunter wasn't always obsessed with his hunting, I believe that he could have overthrown the Emperor himself if he had a more political mind. But for this poacher only the Hunt matters.
I compared him to Grievous.

I've said already that SkekMal was my favorite, but you just listed the reasons. He retained an agile and strong physique and lived his life away from the castle. He was his own Skeksis. Also, I think we all can sympathize with The Hunter's hatred of politics.
The only Skeksis I'm sad that they died.

it was comically macabre to see how the skeksis put skekmal as a kind of puppet, it would have been funny to see how they mobilized him by means of the ropes to inflict terror or make him speak

It's easy to see that SkekMal represents our primordial savagery. When I first saw him, my reaction was, and I thought the Chamberlain was a pain in the ass in terms of the pursuit (still scratching my head wondering how in the world he got from the ruins all the way to the castle at such a fast pace). However, the thing I keep wondering is, why did he kill Kylan's parents? Overall, this is one being you do not want to meet.
Because they probably got in his way. That's my head cannon anyways...

I love SkekMal the Hunter because he has this predatory instincts and the most vicious skeksis of them all. Plus he's more like the Predator of all skeksis.
I thought the General was the most scary of the Skeksis in my childhood, but when SkekMal came into the picture years later, he's proven to be the most terrifying of the Skeksis. Even his fellow Skeksis fearing him says a lot.
Everything about him is terrifying and intriguing, even his hunting career. He's not like the others where they have grown lazy, he kept his skills sharp. 😨😱

Skekmal and skekso are both bad ass in there own way ... Chamberlain is just sneaky....but the scientists is a unsung hero
I’d love to see SkekMal go up against a Predator. His senses of smell and hearing would negate a Predator’s stealth cloak, and his speed and small size would allow him to dodge most attacks. Still, the predator has access to such a wide array of weaponry that it could overwhelm him. Definitely a close fight.
I really like how this character made me realize how fearsome the Skeksis must’ve been at their peak. They often talk of past conquest and if they were all at least half the Skeksis SkekMal is, it’s no wonder how a dozen of individuals managed to submit basically the whole world of Thra.
I also like that SkekMal is the only Skeksis still in shape enough to use all of his limbs !
He’s the Skeksis equivalent of that grandpa who used to be an athlete and still have more endurance than you as he does his jogging everyday !

i always wondered how the hunter managed to live so long, while the other skeksies had to drain the crystal and drink essence in order to stay alive. Maybe the hunter was doing some primitive draining of his own through all the trophies he collected? or just more exercise?
I got to thinking of this and I wonder if it's the blood of his enemies that was kind of like his "essence "?
Well the Skeksis live very long lives regardless. They were only trying to extend their lives more with the draining/ceremonies to get to the next Great Conjunction, which would grant them true immortality.

My favorite skeksis by far! They way he moves, his indifference to politics. The sheer resilience of his murderous will. I would love to see more of his exploits like where he got his mask helmet from or how his face became so scarred. Its a shame we didn’t get to see him interact with other characters like skekso or even skekung. Since augra was birthed out of his dust I sort of have this head canon that skekmal and urva sometimes show up in her aged mind giving their two cents on a dihlema like an angel and demon on ones shoulders.

0:41 to 1:12 SkekMal (or “Skek-Maul”) was undoubtedly the toughest and strongest of all Skeksis. 4:11 , 4:55 , 5:15 and 5:45 One of the many unique things about UrVa and SkekMal is that they were very similar and opposite at the same time. Most of the pairs are either fitting polar opposites or similar, but this pair is both. They were both skilled hunters and mostly stayed away from the rest of their kinds.
5:58 to 6:40 We can only hope that the UrRu and Skeksis are reunited as one upon their death. Their existence as a divided pair is unnatural and because of this, it would make sense that they’d only be this way in life and return to their true selves when they die.
It was believed the emperor was the only skeksis strong enough to take Skekmal but even he was no match for him

This one is the scariest looking Skeksis, especially when he was strung up like a puppet when the others thought he was dead! I wonder if the other Skeksis were intimidated or scared of him?

Maybe there is an afterlife for the Skeksis?
Maybe after death mystics and skeksis go to some sort of limbo which might be a more bleak version of Thraa or their own world?
Maybe hunter now claims other souls around the place, killing them and they return to life again.
Maybe a reason Skeksis don’t accept death is because Urskeks might be eternal and therefore they want to continue to be so?
Would love to see SkekSo and SkekMal battling against foes back in the day. I can already see the two of them dominating in battle

It took me a little while to like him. What I like about him, is like you said about him being and retaining his youthful like athletics. Like what the others had back when they were young too. Mal wearing the skull does make him look a bit more distinguished. It also makes him look like a Skeksis werewolf and acted like one too. One of my fave scary creatures of legend.
I'd say that Mal might have just been totally unconscious. But he hadn't taken the time to let himself get treated in time. He had suffered a lot of blood loss by the time he reached the castle. Plus exhaustion. Maybe more too. His counterpart what, shot him in the leg, arm, and stomach? Just curious on that part. Or was he also shot in the chest? But it was Aughra's essence that kept him hanging on by a thread for longer. Too bad they'd never heard of blood transfusion.

I wasn't sure what Mother Aughra thought of the Hunter. She thought of him as a beautiful creature. I wasn't sure if she was sincere or just saying it to dupe the other skeksis. One redeemable thing about him is that he does fight with some honor. Unlike the others who would lie and manipulate to get what they want.

I would love to know what sort of being/person MalVa the UrSkek was.
I wonder if Skek'Mal retained his vigor because he was actually right in thinking that his victims' spirits give him strength.
If Essence is a thing that can be extracted and distilled, perhaps it also holds a weaker ambient property in the remains of Thra's inhabitants.
If Essence is life force, and Thra operates on the cycle of death and renewal, then it would make sense that the many trophies of Skek'Mal do, in fact, provide him with the same rejuvenative properties as distilled Essence does.
Since he's been doing this for so long, and holds so many trophies, it makes sense that he would then retain nearly all the strength of his prime, only degrading at a slower rate compared to his kin.

Skek-Mal just reminded me of Grievous from Star Wars. Only he was allowed full badassery, where Grievous has been shafted as the years go on. I do enjoy his Clone Wars depiction, as divisive as it is, but I can see the flaws in it as fans of Legends Grievous do. I truly wish and hope for a true to form depiction one day. A show or possibly(though it'd be hard af) film about his life before becoming the cyborg we all know would be AWESOME in my opinion. We just better hope Disney either gets their shit together(which I doubt) or stops being so copyright strike happy that they'll allow others to try the idea. Skek-Mal to me is part of what Grievous should've been allowed to be, if not completely.
If skekmal was leader there would be hunger games every year 12 gefling would enter one would leave and they one who survived would earn a chair at the hunters pack then to prove they deserved to hunt with him they should fight and hunt him and if they catch him then they could stay and if they couldn’t well u would be dead also I just thought of something if the skeksis and urva are connected that means every drop of essence the skeksis consumed it affected the urva meaning they two would be eating gelfing

You know I always wondered how SkekMal stayed so fit despite not taking energy from the crystal I have three theories A. He only took part in the ceremonies at the minor conjunctions which were very powerful B. He actually did get some energy from his trophies through spiritual means as he claimed
C. Maybe his arguably simpler lifestyle combined with physical training lessened the aging done by the corruption. I wonder these things of SkekSa and SkekGra as well
While watching the episode that introduced him, the moment he revealed that he had four arms I immediately thought that he was like General Grevious

Probably my second favorite character next to the Emperor.
The name “skekMal” fits the character perfectly. The reason being is that the word “Mal” means evil or bad, which is basically what the Hunter is: malevolent and vicious.

I think SkekMal was the only Skeksis that wasn't really afraid of dying
