Watching you (and the other Seth) has been educational. I just finished a one mile loop on my property, a combination of open pasture and dense woods, and I have two key suggestions for anyone building a backyard trail. 1) Make it wider than you think you need. At least 2 feet wide. Otherwise your bars will hit stuff or there's not enough room to adjust lines one the fly. This leads to number, 2) Features need more room than you think. To make a flowing course you need room to turn. I've had to rework multiple sections because tight turns ruined the flow. Some of them I'm stuck with, but now I know. Keep up the good work and we'll all build together! 👊
On my trail, I realized in order for me to build it and maintain it, I needed it "tractor width", about 5'. That's wider than needed of course for a bike but it sure is nice to be able to get my ATV in there for hauling wood chips or whatever, plus my tractor.
Seth I have built rollers a lot but I would defo take the top log off and mellow those out cuz it doesn’t look like u can pump them . Could be wrong tho they look dope
my thoughts exactly, they don't really seem to flow because they're so close together and it looks like he has to make a sharp turn between #1 and #2, I'm afraid they'll be hard to ride faster
Perhaps he can extend the bottom a bit more so that he doesnt have to destroy the hardened rollers. Also may link the rollers a bit better if he digs a bit of a bombhole too
I wasn’t able to pick an option. I tried on multiple platforms. Option 1 looks good. Wind the track through the forest. I think you need a wheel barrow if you can’t drive down to the features.
I'm using chrome on desktop. Click the settings icon in the bottom right hand corner. Enable "Annotations". Then at around 9:43, click the 'info' icon in the top right hand corner and you should be able to vote.
I see lots of videos of trail building and the time that it takes. I have built approx 5 miles of trail on my private land. The goal to make it smooth and flowing as soon as possible. The process. 1. Mark the trail with flags or tape. 2. Walk the trail and pick up any large debris, rocks logs etc. 3. Walk the trail with a chain saw, axe, machete and clear logs, sticks, trees that need to be removed. 4. Get out the old push mower set on the highest height and mow it. Yes mow it just plow through the small brush, grass, weeds. This removes and chops up all the debris, old leaves etc. 5. Do a light raking with a leaf rake to clean up debris leftover. 6. What most people will think is crazy. Oh no it may cause erosion, make the trail muddy etc. I use a large rear tine tiller and run it on the trail. Set the depth so it is just barely tilling the top layer of soil. I go 1 way and back the opposite direction only making it as wide as the tiller. 7. Go back with a garden rake and lightly clean up the tilling. 8. You now have a well defined trail with all the small roots and weeds out of your way. 9 get a few buddies rounded up and ride it. It will pack very quickly into a trail that looks like it was there for years. 10. Add whatever features you want now. Lastly after a. Purple of good rains the trail will be amazing.
I bought a small Kubota mini excavator, and between it and my Kubota tractor and a chain saw put in a trail through a quaking aspen grove on my Idaho property. It was an insane amount of work, (lot's of big rocks)as I had nothing but slopes to work with, 147' of fall in 1/4 mile, and also thick brush, but once I started I realized I couldn't stop! I have a wood chipper for the tractor, and used all the cleared trees once they were chipped, to cover the path, it makes an excellent riding or walking surface. I have a fantasy of IF I ever sold my 40 acres, the last thing I would do is say to a prospective buyer, "let's take a walk." Totally private, and mid way down I built a small deck that bridges over the stream, just big enough for a few lawn chairs, it is so cool and private, I almost feel guilty when I see how people live in town!
Hey Seth, get a leaf blower, it will save loads of time and backbreaking work with a rake and leaves a mint surface. We use a Backpack Blower from Makita for building regional XC courses and I’ll never go back to struggling with a rake again!
Missouri - too far north for mild winters, too far south for mild summers... Awesome spread man - pretty cool that you're able to have your own place so close to family. Also, brush/corridor clearing always kept me from starting trail builds when I had property like this...
Build both. make 2 lines and they can meet up later down the trail. Do the gap to berm and gap to berm and use berm as take of and land in the second option.
Hey Seth, i just have one recommendation for the rollers, I personally have built rollers on my pump track and I noticed that your first roller fights against the ground a little bit. To increase speed and flow to fix that, either put more dirt to blend the backside of the roller with the ground, or you can dig into the ground, and blend it, also getting rid of that loamy dead spot. When you can ride over it with no chunky transition, you will double your speed and generally have a more “flow” to your trail! As for your options, I like option 2, just because to get all of your speed first at the beginning of your trail, and not being to hasty to put in jumps, don’t get me wrong I love jumps but I recommend placing them further down the trail for faster and more flowy jumps. I love option 1 but I think that jump is too soon and might interrupt the flow you are going for. Sorry for the long comment, 😂 I’m a very passionate trail builder, and I want your trails to be as fun and flowy as possible! Thanks for the uploads, it’s nice to see that you don’t need to be pro to have fun in this sport. Love your vids man! Freeride dude
bombholes in between for sure will help and take out the top log to make them less peaky as you said, will flow way better like a pump track that way! cool project though looking forward to following along
I really enjoy your videos. I have built some trails in my yard as well and I get a lot of inspiration from your videos. I also like the voting feature at the end of the video. Keep it up!!
Deffo opt1....sort the rollers out first though. Take them down ond log and dig the rollers into joining berms so u can hook and pump better. It will run so much smoother and faster that way!👍🏼good luck
😂 I suggest also using a wheelbarrow in stead of walking on and of with a shovel to your dirt buggy, if saving on build time is important to you 😂 Loving the vids, keep it up!
Yea, you and Seth bike hacks need to team up again. One video idea: you each surprise each other with a different feature on each others trails? Idk, I think that could be fun.
You're right, those rollers are kind of peaky. I'm not sure you'll have enough speed to hit a gap right out of them. I love the idea of option 1, but I'm going to vote for option 2.
Sick idea mann, no actual voting option but I think you should do option 1 followed by option 2 . Baby gap into S berm that flows into option 2 for some fun fly time. I'm usually pretty stingy with my subscriptions, but you earned it mann 🤘🤙✌️
Option 2 - Seems like the better option for picking up some speed for features following this one. Seems like option 1 will prevent you from getting the speed needed to carry through to the next feature.
How about a gap to berm but you have an option to gap out of the berm into a set of rollers ending with a gap (using the berm as a takeoff) best of both worlds!!
Make a shark fin/roller thing to split the trail so that you can go straight over and pump for the option 2 and you can go off the side for the s berm. This might be a project to do at a later date when making changes to the trail later though! Sick video my guy!
Backyard Trail Builder has been such an inspiration to me. So much so that they have inspired me to create a channel of my own. I will be dropping my first video this Friday 10am Pacific Daylight Time! Any support would be much appreciated. And thanks again Backyard Trail Builder
I think that you should make the rollers mellower and dig a bit into the ground because it makes them a lot nicer to ride. They are also too steep and high you should make them smaller so they flow better.
it doesnt seem that long ago seeing your channel under 1k subs... maybe been a year or so i guess now, but awesome to see the growth. you'll be at 100k soon!
Good idea, waiting to get experience to build. I like option 1. But when I see the path opion 2 might work better . Also a bunch of rollers in a row. Great stuff
Build bombholes after the rollers to get more speed and better flow
Good video
Agreed however drainage is a problem so I would just extend the down slope of the first roller
I’m pretty experienced with those
@@isaack2274 just make them shallow with short, angled drainage ditches should be fine
Do this before continuing, get a better idea of the speed
Birksy MTB u got a good point

Seth I have built rollers a lot but I would defo take the top log off and mellow those out cuz it doesn’t look like u can pump them . Could be wrong tho they look dope
They are a bit too much like pyramids
my thoughts exactly, they don't really seem to flow because they're so close together and it looks like he has to make a sharp turn between #1 and #2, I'm afraid they'll be hard to ride faster
We have piramid looking and normal rollers, you can pump both well, but I like normal too
Perhaps he can extend the bottom a bit more so that he doesnt have to destroy the hardened rollers. Also may link the rollers a bit better if he digs a bit of a bombhole too
P R na I think they are far sort enough they just need to be more mellow
Every time I watch one of your videos it makes me happy. I'm so glad Seth had you on his channel.
Where’s the 50ft canyon gap option
I don't think there is one. Unsubscribing now

Tbh the rollers look so much cooler with the wood showing then building them just out of dirt!! Love the vids. Also gap jump to berm!
So true!
I just bought 12.6 acres also in MO and I came here looking for ideas and inspiration. Can't wait to check out more of your videos.
That dirt is the most beautiful dirt ive ever seen
