    Nice video, thank you for sharing. Would love to see how you set up the search / filter. Anyway of adding custom fields to kadence blocks like post grid?

    • @mistergeko
      @mistergeko  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! I will make a dedicated video for setting that up. For the custom fields inside post grid block, I never actually tried, normally there is no true support as of now, but there might be a small chance that some parts can let shortcodes through and render them, which would technically mean we could add dynamic content. However, it would be very limited and unpractical. I hope they will tell us more next week during the live stream when we can expect true support for dynamic content for the blocks.

    Great, as Kadence now incorporated Dynamic Content in its blocks as well. Question: if we don't want a field to show as in your example website, then what to do?

    • @mistergeko
      @mistergeko  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the time of this reply, Kadence does not support custom taxonomies with ACF yet, only custom fields. So the ones in my example website that are entirely custom fields with values that you input manually when creating a project custom post, those can be fetched by dynamic content feature. But the ones that I just select from the existing list (taxonomies), those cannot be fetched. Kadence has told that this is their first iteration of dynamic content, there will be more updates with deeper integration. For now you can use my solution if needed :)

I actually have a video upcoming where I do a case study for this website I made, some design choices and all that, but I will also soon make a detailed video about how to create this search and filter and some variations there as well as how to create this plugin for ACF. As for WPML I do have experience with it for several years now so I can make a video about that too, especially the part for translating the fields, why not :D

    Can you please explain the reason behind creating taxonomies and not just creating text fields/checkboxes directly in ACF?

    • @mistergeko
      @mistergeko  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both taxonomy and custom field can be linked to a custom post type. My rule of thumb not to make a mistake that I need to correct down the road is that when I need database entries for specific field, then I use taxonomy. For fields that I just need to input stuff like text, those will be custom fields.
      For example, one of those taxonomies for this client was type of glass. I don't want an employee there to enter manually names each time, especially because I need those to be the same each time. If they enter with a typo or not full name then I have a problem filtering and stuff. In the backend, when you have taxonomy in most cases you can do stuff with it the same you can with custom post type. With custom fields, those are temporary values you enter as you go. For this client, the name of the architect is custom field. I'm not going to store every single architect in the database, I have nothing from that. But for the type of glass, I need it in many different situations. Tomorrow whatever they request, I can always call taxonomy and pull predefined values, get how many projects have that taxonomy field etc. It's more natural to use it for that than custom fields.
      I could technically get away with a custom field having a dropdown with predefined values, even filter according to that, but that's not natural way to do it. There will be a plugin out there, that I desperately need and it won't be able to filter by custom field's dropdown values :)
      To sum it up, best practices when it comes to the nature of the values I am using :)
      Hope this helps!

    Do you use WPML or Polylang or Translatepress ?

    • @mistergeko
      @mistergeko  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In this case WPML due to many plugins that needed to be used with it. WPML is the most integrated solution. Polylang is also great if free features can be sufficient. Currently, I am not a big fan of TranslatePress. It appears to have easy front end translation, but when it comes to pulling search queries in different languages and filtering by languages in the database, then it scores poorly. With the plugins I was using it would not be able to translate stuff.

    • @pahtashow
      @pahtashow 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mistergeko What about speed ? I guess WPML is way slower than TranslatePress. For simple agency website with some services pages full featured solution is unnecessary ? I am interested in speed.

    • @mistergeko
      @mistergeko  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pahtashow People confuse the speed here. WPML is the most heavy when it comes to features and how it can grow your database due to string translations where strings are recorded in the database when you scan. What one needs to do is after translating, prune the database from those extra records that you don't use because it scans everything.
      I follow the best practices and I never have issues with speed and WPML, it never affects my loading times. For me why I like WPML is that it does translation from the back-end, I can translate all taxonomies, custom fields etc and not just what I see on the front-end. That way I can ensure everything that might popup on search or elsewhere is also translated. It's what I call thorough translation. But, for basic sites that don't utilize much than a few normal pages and a contact form, I guess the fast solution might be a way to go.
      If you use TranslatePress and it works for your use cases, no need to think about WPML. But if you have issues that it cannot do something, you can sleep well knowing that there is always a plugin called WPML that can translate simply anything you would ever need in WP :D
