Living Loving Maid was always played on the radio following Heartbreaker, there was no pause. As the album cut directly flows together. No pause. When you react to Heartbreaker continue into Living loving maid, as that is how it is meant to be. They go together. So react back to back no pause.

    • @tektoniks_architects
      @tektoniks_architects ปีที่แล้ว +9

There were several times when Zep tracks had no pause between. They did this on Black Mountain Side/Communication breakdown on the first album, too. The reason is interesting. Jimmy Page was focused on creating album-oriented rock - not singles. He wanted to entice the listener to listen to entire album sides. He also wanted DJs at rock radio stations to play multiple songs....to get caught napping when once song transitioned to the next, so they could get more air time....which worked. I also have read that Jimmy deliberately put the wrong track length on the typed info they gave DJs on the pressings of the albums they gave to the radio stations, deliberately telling them a track was 3 minutes long when it was really 5 or 6 minutes+ long. Jimmy understood the music business so well, and he set up Zeppelin to win.

I knew a guy that considered himself a Zeppelin expert. One day we were talking and he mentioned he could never figure out why the radio always played Living Loving Maid after Heartbreaker. I answered “because that’s the way the album is and they are meant to be paired together”. He said no, such and such song is after Heartbreaker. We went round and round for a while when he mentioned his collection was not vinyl, but cassette. It turns out the record company had changed the order of songs on Led Zeppelin II so they would fit the cassette better and avoid too much blank tape at the end of one of the sides. He was totally blown away when he realized this. So, there still may be some people out there that have no idea LLM follows Heartbreaker. By all means the two should be played together when these guys get to doing their reaction to Heartbreaker.

When I was a kid, I was just bottom-line blown away by Zeppelin. It wasn't until many years later that I began to understand why. It was the great variety in their playing and writing skills, an ability to take you away musically and narratively to far away cerebral landscapes, a power and passion that few imbued their music with, and just the best improvisational virtuosos this world has ever seen. From the start, Page enthralled me and was responsible for getting me and millions of others to pick up a guitar. In learning his songs, it's then that you really get a feel for his creative genius. Musically, compositionally, and productively, there are few like him.

One of my favorites from that album. Christmas time 1969, I vividly remember lying on the couch, listening to this by the all blue lights of our beautiful tree.
I felt transported to some sort of Faerie (old spelling) Land. The album had only been out less than 2 months & I was wearing it out. So was everyone else I knew.
I was 16. So long ago but Zeppelin still transports me.
I was fortunate enough to see them in concert 3 times. They were astounding. Wish I had a time machine & could whisk you back with me to experience what I did.
I'm thrilled that you both really like & appreciate them.
    Much love from Kentucky.

The second album was written and recorded while on tour; whatever city they were in, they'd find a studio somewhere to lay down tracks and would travel with the master tapes. Some of the riffs that came about during improvisation in concert would get added to various songs from this album. It was a challenge to record this way. They said that the studio quality varied greatly from city to city but they had no choice and did the best they could. At one point, Jimmy said he'd lost confidence in the album because he'd heard it so much in its incohesive form while on tour, that he was concerned he was getting sick of it and wouldn't be able to produce a good album. The song itself was about the affair Robert was having, or had already had, or wanted to have (I'm not sure of the timeline) with his sister in law.

Hey guys. You hit on one of my favorite Zeppelin songs with this one. Great dynamics here. One of the best, most creative and original lead guitarist on the planet. (Eff Eddie and his fast scales)
The most versatile bass guitarist, great on bass, keyboards, and other stringed instruments.
Best rock drummer. Seriously, if you had a rock band who would you rather have than John B?
Hands down, the best vocalist frontman. Not clownish like Mick. Better vocals than any other. Plus, he could play the hell out of the harmonica.
But the way they meshed together is what made them remarkable.

This track is a great example of Zeppelin's signature tempo shift, a device that adds depth and texture to several of their classics. They lull you at the start with a tender lyrical guitar or Plant vocal, and then to use La's phrase, they hit you upside the head with a controlled explosion of Page and Bonham. You can hear it in Stairway, Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You, Over the Hills and Far Away, and Ramble On.

There is an early live performance of this on youtube that sounds just like the record, except they do a little improvising without messing with the vibe.

Me, in high school, driving around with friends, high as fuck on some Colombian gold, listening to this album. Yep. Good times. This particular song always brings that memory back like it was yesterday. Love the reaction. Thanks!

I remembered thinking that Robert Plant showed his R&B influences on this number, particularly with the scat ending. And the fluidity of the instrumentation is just superb.
